FAQ:
Q: How do I save or load the game?
A: Warlords Classic saves the current game automatically on start and end of turn, before and after the battle, on ruin search etc… So, you cannot use “save-load magic”. This is what we call “fair play”.
Q: “Hero Quests” features?
A: Since Warlords Classic is a Warlords 1 port and quests featurs was introduced in Warlords II, they are not implemented in our version. We are not yet sure if we will ever implement them. Sorry.
Q: Any other differences from the game I love for tenth of years?
A: Yes, only a few. We have replaced libraries with tombs; you will always find money in tombs, and your hero will never die searching tombs.
This Strategy game offers engaging gameplay and regular updates for mobile players.

Community Insight:
One of our absolute favorite games growing up and this app holds true to the original. The problem is that there's no option for us to see the battles and the big issue is that when we're attacked, the battle screen doesn't launch, so we don't get to watch our defenses. With how fast it goes, there are times we don't even realize we were attacked. If that could be "fixed" it would make this game 5 stars. It would also be cool to be able to buy production. Other than that, this game is great and nostalgic.
We paid for this game, full price years ago. Last update, all but three maps were locked behind additional paywalls. It now costs over $20 for the content that we already paid for under the advertised terms of purchase.
We bought this game with 10+ apps and have saved games in progress under those maps. Now we log in and only 3 are available and there is a $1.99 charge to buy them again. This is wrong.
We payed 5.00 for the game it came with 15 maps. We were Very happy with the purchase until! Yesterday we only have access to 3 maps and have to pay for The other 12 (and any extra). New maps having a fee to play is fair, but taking away the maps that we already purchased is stealing from us.
We already wrote out a long review but Im not seeing it posted. We got to it from within the game which probably only hands it off to Apple if you rate them with 5 stars. Dont purchase this game. It is a waste of money. Your $4.99 used to be worth it and gave you many maps. Now they require you to pay for all but 3 maps. At least for now. Whats next? Pay for every single map? Pay for every single Hero? Pay 10 cents per turn? Based on the game makers behavior, we would not be surprised by any of those. They are greedy and do not deserve our support. We understand that they need to make money which is why we were willing to pay for the game in the first place and pay for some of the extra maps. But this recent change is ridiculous. They are stealing from us. Last month, our game purchase got us gameplay on 14 maps. Now our purchase only gets us gameplay on 3 maps. Where is our refund for what they deducted from our gameplay? Its like buying a car, driving it around for a month. Then the dealership coming and taking the tires and requiring you to pay extra for them because they decided the tires were not included in the original purchase.
Why is this app now charging for maps that were free before? Charge for new content, but why change and make game users pay for old content.
Game used to be 5 stars. However, overnight, game started charging for 90% of maps that used to be free plus kept existing paid maps paid. Developer: if you want more money, then make more maps that you can charge. Do not piss off your gamers and customers by charging what used to be free or included.
Game changed so you can only really play if you pay.
Its great. Please add the rest of the features from warlords II deluxe and exp pack. Most importantly, we want to be able to buy new production units for cities like the old game. And we miss the exp pack skins. And then let us just buy it all at once rather than using in-app purchases.
Many know this game from the early days of computer gaming. The port doesnt work the same as the original but its fairly close (most annoyingly, automated troop movements arent optimized to avoid conflicts). We purchased the app a few years ago and it came with the classic maps from the original game. Since then the developer has chosen to lock all but three maps, which now have to be purchased separately. We could understand charging for newly developed maps, thereby extending gameplay, but hobbling the game and forcing devoted fans to now pay for something offered free with the purchase of the game just a few years ago seems greedy.
This version of the classic Warlords came with 14 free maps, ranging from Arthurian Britain to Southern Iluria to oddballs like Virus, Dragon, and Hand. (They're maps #1-14 if you're curious). Other maps required a $1.99 fee to unlock, but that wasn't a big deal as the amount of free content was more than worth the price of admission. Recently, however, they changed it. Now you only get 3 free maps. 3! That's it! Maps 4-14 have been locked behind paywalls! What's that? You want to play Southern Iluria again? That'll be $1.99 please! Arthurian Britain? Another $1.99! Absolutely ridiculous, especially when Warlords is available on other platforms for less predatory prices. GOG.com gives you the entire first and second games for $5. That's a far better use of your money.
This is an old DOS game from the 90s, updated with minor changes for the iPhone. You fight with stacks of troops, with combat modifiers for terrain, flying units, special (magical) units, and heroes. Captured cities generate income, which you spend to recruit and maintain different troops, so you have to choose the right troops, manage your money and logistics of troop movements, and plan your strategy and tactics while battling AI and/or other players. Heroes can also explore ruins to randomly get more gold, recruit magical troops, or get magic items for combat bonuses. The game auto saves as you go, which makes it a challenge, but you can undo every action since your last combat. We think its a great game, but there are two fixes that would really improve it. 1) In the original game, the AI would surrender if you have more than 40 cities, and they have 16 cities less than you. Ive never had an AI surrender in this version, and its a bit tedious to play the game to the bitter end to get the victory, so we just quit when its obvious Im going to win. So they really need the surrender feature in this version. 2) Theres no option to delete saved games. This one should be a pretty easy fix, and frankly, its a basic feature that any app with saved games should have.
Ive been playing this game off on for 30 years. We played the original you on our grandpa PC, blew our mind. Still get surprised k bp by the AIs move even today.
Play it. You wont regret it if you like strategy.
A predecessor to Civ, Warlords was a solo/multiplayer game that had all the addictive qualities of todays games but without the graphics fluff. Keep it simple principles and you have a game that friends will enjoy destroying each other at over and over again. Thank you devs for bringing this one back to life.
Huge price to re-purchase maps. Amazing how they can arbitrarily just remove your purchasing rights. Stay away, and find a better game.
One of the best classic games available. The other maps should be included.
Overall, it's a fun app. However, whatever algorithm is being used to determine battle outcomes in multiplayer is severely flawed. Be prepared for frustration when impossible battle outcomes become reality. We've seen a hero (at 7+10) with 3 demon units lose to a griffin and other ridiculous results. Otherwise, an enjoyable way to waste time.
Just as relaxing and challenging as the original, well done. 10 out if 10! A great way to have fun.
The classic is indeed back. Im running the iPad version on our MacBook Air. Theres only one thing missing: keyboard shortcuts. The mouse control was always good, the interface is slightly improved, and the only thing Im missing is the keyboard shortcuts. Since its only tested for iPad/iPhone, that it works smoothly on the Mac is a nice surprise.
Great to see a casual and engaging game on the iPad. True to the desktop version. Easy to learn and a great way to keep the unruly horde at bay.
This is an amazing port of the original game. Fun to play and lots of replay ability. We spent too many hours as a kid waiting for our computer to run through a single turn. Playing this game gives the same thrills, but much faster. Lots of options (old units, new units) and replay-ability is off the chart. Active designer and new features and maps added and being worked on. Buy it already.
This was one of the first graphical computer war games we ever played! Amiga was the computer. One of the best classic games available. The other maps should be included.
It was close but a slight miss, how come there are no quest or as many allies.
Your new maps have weakened monsters (Griffons, Archons, etc). If you make all the monsters weak, might as well just make a map with just foot soldiers, if parity is your goal. The old maps have stronger monsters, Ill stay there, thanks.
Warlords was a great way to pass the time but the more recent versions have put so much behind the pay wall. $2.99 for one map. Sheesh.
Developer is removing maps that were included in the original purchase and now charging for them. Such a bad business practice! Also, during battles, armies are not always organized from lowest to highest army in terms of defeats and you wind up losing stronger armies before losing weaker armies. Seems like a development flaw.
Not as good as the cpu version, but darn near.
Good game AI could be better but overall we would of given it 8.5/10 but we had bought the full game that came with 9 maps which was included in the deal but now they took the maps and left us and other original customers 3. This has to be borderline illegal and basically theft. We would change our review if the maps were given back to the original customers who bought it before that scam update.
We loved this game when we were younger. Our brothers and we would sit around the old desktop playing this for hours and hours. We like that the Warlords II Deluxe maps still incorporate the fixed army options in each castle and require you make navies like in Warlords we. We actually used to play a customized version of the game a friend of our dads made which played almost exactly like the II deluxe version on this app. We are grateful someone took the time to make this app, our but is the AI players are fairly dumb. For example, they never create navies, ever, so on any map with much water they are incredibly easy to outmaneuver. We would give this 5 stars except that the reason we got the app was so us and our brothers could play it together again, but for the life of us and after much google research we can NOT figure out how to create a game and invite people to it. There just isnt a way to do it, at least not one that makes any sense. That was the main draw and we cant do it.
Faithful to the original game. Game play is intuitive and easy. We cannot stop playingserious nostalgia trip! Update, 11/11/2016: we now have a iPhone 6S and the game sizing is perfect for 6/7 and 6/7S. Still our best iPhone game purchase to date! Update, 4/13/2020: A great game. The devs keep adding good content without messing with the game play. Even if you never played the original, this is a fun game in general. If you played Warlords back in the 90s, this is a must-buy game. Still our best iPhone game purchase to date.
Would like to see more implementation of Warlords II features (stack vectoring, better unit and hero inspection, real army lists, and ability to purchase different production) but beggars cant be choosers, we suppose. Overall, loads of fun.
You cant purchase the newest map.
This is a classic! We remember as a child playing this with friends or alone against the computer, either way it was a lot of fun. There is an option in game to switch between warlords we, II, and III graphic styles which is absolutely awesome. What a great TB strategy gem, there will definitely be more hours sunk into this one. Thank you for the port to iOS.
We loved the Warlords Series when we were a kid, this game is the perfect simplicity that it offered, imagining the massive battles of knights on pegasi against the goblin hordes is amazing to experience again. Would you be able to port Warlords 3: Reign of Heroes or Darklords Rising? We would gladly pay for those! We miss such amazing games.
Risk, archon, heroes of might and magic all combined in one game. It takes a little time to play, which doesnt bother us. If youre looking for a 10 min timewaster this aint it. For us replay value was pretty good. Ive played it on and off for many years on non ios platforms. It has some 16 bit charm to it, so ifyou like a vintage/retro fantasy wargame, this may be a good choice for you.
Just as relaxing and challenging as the original, well done. 10 out if 10! A great way to have fun.
Graphics are lame (at first glance) but control is extensive and the characters you unlock are interesting. You really have to plan and take risks well and it takes forever to play a match, beware, this will waste precious hours of your life if you like strategy games like "Axis and Allies" or "Risk.".
Ive been playing this game off on for 30 years. We played the original on our grandpa PC, blew our mind. Still get surprised by the AIs move even today.
We liked the game until we lost availability to several maps we had already purchased once. Now they are trying to sell them to us again.
Mr. Konstantin Slichnyi, Why am we required to repurchase the maps? If this is a glitch please resolve as we were able to redeem a few maps couple weeks ago. Otherwise, the cult followers, the majority of the players, will surely go elsewhere and the app will sadly die. If you need to generate revenue then release the map editor for single purchase or subscription so that maps can be crowdsourced and shared with players. Thanks.
We now, apparently, have to buy not just the maps that were once free but also the maps that we already bought prior to the switch in ownership. Warlords is a few steps above being a scam now.
Great game, but we wish the AI had ships and get blessings.
We played this game for hours on our old Mac 2si. Now ported to the iOS App Store with tons of optional maps. Multiplayer options too.
The developers do a fantastic job of keeping this game fresh with new content. Worth every penny.
This once came with 19 maps, with options to buy more for a couple dollars each. If you update the game, all but TWO maps are suddenly locked – stealing 17 maps from you and demanding money to unlock them again! For shame.
The old game from the 90s is still fun to play. Recently, however the removed access to some new maps that had been free. Irritating! Please grandfather in those who had access at the very least.
Awesome that this game is here! Kudos to the team that revived it, total nostalgia combined with simple gameplay and solid strategy/tactics. We do wish that the AI had a stronger difficulty level, less predictable and dumb. Also more freedom to choose your squad on multiplayer and to save the game on solo.
After spending $5 for the game now they want another $20+ for maps Wow, so greedy They actually took away included maps to now charge 2 each for them….wth.
Your new maps have weakened monsters (Griffons, Archons, etc). If you make all the monsters weak, might as well just make a map with just foot soldiers, if parity is your goal. The old maps have stronger monsters, Ill stay there, thanks.
