Community Insight:

Spiderweb Software makes the best story driven RPG's that we ever played. If you like old school fantasy RPG's like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Avernum, and Dungeons of Chaos on iOS, then this game is for you.

Our biggest gripe is that this game's difficulty escalates much faster than Avadon 1, and this difficulty isn't just due to mechanical rebalancing. Nonetheless, it makes people try different strategies (such as hit-and-run) but it can still be pretty frustrating when cannon-fodder enemies have about as much health as bosses do. We would also say that currently, we enjoyed Avadon 1's plot better (in particular, the first time you enter the Corruption kinda lost our attention for awhile), but once you get halfway-through, it starts to get interesting again. Having finished the game now, we are disappointed to some extent by the ending. There are multiple ways to end the game, but the easiest way to end it was anti-climatic. Nonetheless, still a good plot and if you are planning on playing Avadon 3, you should definitely play this one first for plot reasons.

Another spiderweb software banger, this gem is almost as good as the original Avernum, only dragging a long a little at the end when enemy HP bloat starts to pick up. Theres dozens and dozens of hours of great content in this one, and youll stay hooked from start to finish trying to defeat the empire and discover all of Avernums secrets.

While we agree with the many positive aspects of this game in reviews made by others, we must say that, compared to other similar games, this one forced extremely long battle sequences that gave us headaches. There were also fewer opportunities to buy critical potions, making survival and offensive tactics much more difficult. Ill stick with Avernum and Exiled Kingdoms, which, to us, are more balanced and enjoyable.

Spiderweb software is fun – take your time and enjoy the ride.

If the developer would add an iTunes File Sharing save feature like the newest Avernum game has, this would be really great and much appreciated. As it stands now under iOS 8.3 or greater, users can no longer access the iOS file system to back up, save, load or move save games between devices. The iTunes File Sharing feature would be very useful and would allow us long-time players with hours spent playing the game to use our previous save games.

Love the game, it's fun to play and go through the whole story line. Lots of quests to do and the variety of character types can make for some replayability too. It does crash on our iPad 4 if we're trying to open the IOS control center to adjust brightness or if we have a low battery pop up. Not sure if our experience is unique in that regard but we try to avoid those situations as much as possible. The game itself hasn't crashed during normal play.

We're half a day's absorbed play in and have obviously barely started. Great, deep, engaging story and good combat etc. Love it. We really appreciate that Spiderweb has brought their wonderful games to iPad without IAP or anything, just a pure, good, well-balanced game. We wish we had more stars to give.

One of the best written, most comprehensive RPGs out there.

Fantastic RPGS action beautifully written and engaging. We played three times over to view the different outcomes. Looking forward to,part 3.

Nobody on iOS makes them quite like Spiderweb Software. As an old school Ultima, Bards Tale, and Baldurs Gate guy we grew up and love what's considered "old school" RPGs. We played the first Avadon all the way through, then Avernum, and figured we'd be sick of the formula by now. But we were wrong, Avadon 2 is just as terrific as the first one and has us unable to put it down. Once again a a great story. The whole experience feels like it's running much smoother this time around too – but maybe that's more our newer iPad than any major engine improvements. Bottom line – worth every cent if you like older style RPGs.

Spiderweb does fun games that are more about exploring, treasure hunting, and doing quests than just going around mindlessly killing everything. There is lots of fighting monsters but there is always a goal in mind, and the battles are not gory. We're having no problem playing on our ipad2. Spiderweb games are our absolute very favorite, so are instabuys for us.

Amazing great game that is a little buggy but really worth every penny. If liked the old Ultima games 6,7,8 then you will love this game. Best RPGs next to final fantasy.

It's nice to know this style of RPG is still being made. It's also terribly nice to be able to play it on our ipad. Great storyline.

If you liked the first Avadon, or have played any of Spiderweb's games on PC, you'll love this. Touch controls work well, and the game is very engaging, yet relaxing to play. It's wonderful having this game on the go.

Yet another highly detailed and engrossing experience from ole Spider web. Old school RPG'ing at its finest! Will not disappoint, provided you're into old school games like this and have the patience to sort through enumerable menus, options and texts.

Seriously. Spiderweb has been making great RPGs since the 1990's and their Avadon series is simply amazing. Buy a real game, today, and spend the next few weeks 'not' grinding away for freemium Spinsters.

This is almost everything an RPG should be: it's well-written, first of all, with engaging characters, lots of storyline options, non-linearity, character customization, and many many hours of game play. Doing most but not all of the side stuff, we clocked in somewhere around 40 hours. And it was fun enough, and the desire to find alternate storylines compelling enough, that we're starting over again. One other thing: it's a proper challenge. Most of the other RPGs we've tried on the App Store are way too easy. Especially on the harder difficulty settings, this one isn't. Some of the more important battles (you'll know them when you see them) are nasty. It would be nice if saving were a slightly less cumbersome process, but whatever. That's not the reason the game is "almost perfect." The flaw is the combat system. To attack, you have to tap the tactical square the NPC is standing on or the NPC, and the squares are pretty small. We seem to have a tendency to fat-finger it, which can cause (for example) our sorcerer to wander out like a quarterback doing an especially naked bootleg. This rarely ends well. The fact that you can tap an NPC to attack also causes a less irritating problem, which is that it's hard to move behind an NPC when you want to. And because the battles are hard and tactics are really important, sometimes you want to. Spiderweb, if you're out there, it might help to allow us to zoom in some during battle. But that flaw notwithstanding, this game is worth every penny. If you're an RPG fan, you should buy it. Forget fancy graphics. This is like a good novel – better than a good movie that looks better, is over sooner, and leaves you a lot less fulfilled.

Having played a few of the old Spiderweb shareware games on Mac years ago and with great respect for their indie efforts, we bought this one for a long trip where we would have a lot of down time. The whole world is quite impressive, with interesting choices and political alignments. However, after playing many hours, maybe 60% through, it increasingly felt like a chore to schlep our characters around, keep track of their goals and rearrange and sell their secondhand gear/loot. Im wondering if the earlier games were tighter, or perhaps when we were younger we enjoyed roleplaying as a human resources, travel logistics, and ebay specialist. But not anymore – we got bored. We have definitely had good experiences with other big sandbox and campaign games, but unfortunately did not feel like completing this one. It wasnt an active decision; we just decided to play something else one day and never went back.

We are a big fan of Spiderweb games, but we have become frustrated with this game. There are 2 things that frustrate us. First, why is there a cap on levels at 30? We reached level 30 about halfway through the game. Now what? Why not allow characters to get more powerful, or at least develop through more of the game? What's wrong with having a character that can eventually wade through lots of enemies quickly? The thing we find most frustrating is the section of the game where they start throwing lots of enemies at you in an endless stream as you try to run for some goal (like Fort Farsite, or whatever it's called). We finally gave up. It's not fun to just blow through potions and scrolls without making any progress. As an aside, it's annoying that "regular" troops are so powerful that they can cause trouble for a level 30 Hand of Avadon. Why can their magic users cast 4 spells at a time. If they can do it, we should be able to also. Anyway, we hope the next game is better.

Unplayable on our iPad 2. Freezes every 30/40 seconds. Extremely annoying.
