Edo Superstar – Action Game Review
![]()
Edo Superstar is a Action/Roleplaying game from CleaverSoft, LLC, first launched in 31st January 2017.
It’s rated 12+ and currently has 24+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Edo Superstar Stand Out
Ninja. Monkey. Action.
Edo Superstar is an action-packed beat-em-up set in old Japan, featuring a colorful cast of animal characters. Guide Masaru, an energetic monkey with lofty ambitions to be the most popular fighter in the land, as he battles his way to Edo City and competes in the prestigious Zodiac Tournament.
Along the way our hero sharpens his skill and avoids his former ninja clan who hunt him for forsaking their order in his pursuit of fame.
Players control Masaru using a gesture-based control scheme that uses intuitive swipes and taps instead of cluttering the screen with virtual buttons. Slide under punches, uppercut massive foes in slow motion, parry incoming attacks, string together epic combos, and unlock even more abilities along the way.
As Masaru defeats his enemies, his fame rises allowing our hero to increase his strength, defense, speed and special stats. Money collected from bested foes can purchase special items, like stat altering amulets, giving our hero an even greater edge in combat. Performing well in a level will also yield special stars, which upgrades Masaru’s equipment.
This Action game offers engaging gameplay and regular updates for mobile players.

Community Insight:
At first its hard to get used to the controls, but after replaying the first couple levels we got the hang of it. It was even more challenging getting the superstars but worth it. Im saving up for the clothes that are 5 superstars. The designs of the game are cool, but on a website there was a video you made also showing the customization of not only his clothes but also his face/ fur on his face. But overall, we would rate it a 4.5, but round it up to a 5. Though we would like to see more clothes designs and things like that.
No tengo palabras. Mejor juego que he jugado todo l ao; los grficos son dulces y los combos son picos. Esto debera estar en la consola.
This game is so pro gamer and we like it except when we punch backwards (its a odd glitch it doesnt happen often and when it happens its just annoying) it good game.
This game is no button masher, and it does not take endless dedication either. The result is a mobile game that is more than a way to turn off after a long day. The game is fun. (A few bugs, especially fighting rooster in Edo tournament).
We wrote this review when we originally played through the game, but we think most of the information still stands. Im just awful at posting these. Great game with refreshing music, art, and style. The humor is on point and we found ourselves amazed by the volume of secret areas and activities. There is so much to do in this game! We spent a long time in the third world simply because we were enjoying backtracking and finding secrets we had missed. Because it is so difficult, the game naturally encourages you to go back and level up from time to time, and we enjoyed that process. The tips were actually very helpful. We found ourselves wishing we could read all the tips in one place. All in all, the mechanics are rewarding, and there is a deep level of complexity to the battles (not something you can say about most mobile brawlers). The game shines until the very end, bursting at the seams with creative energy. The zodiac tournament is especially fun, and there is some good character development along the way. There aren't many things we do not like about this game, but most of them are in the first and third worlds, and were revisited when we tried to collect some superstars prior to progressing to the latter worlds. A retry button, rather than an exit button, would have made superstar challenges less tedious. Some early enemies were frustrating due to mobbing/stunlock combos or the absence of a critical hit reticule (looking at the pigs from world 1). The lack of a "picking items up" animation made a certain superstar challenge in world 1 frustrating. Moving between platforms at various elevations is a bit difficult. Sometimes the game doesn't allow moves such as the divekick. This was worst when trying to avoid a flopping fish or two on boats (see 3-6). If anything, most of these flaws left us wondering if we would have had a better experience using a controller or keyboard… But after the difficulties of the first worldthe second world is very funthey were mostly problems of the past. The game has a good core and these were minor kinks that we expect to see fixed over time. Great work! Can't wait to see the next game you put out.
Amazing art, amazing design, amazing concept, amazing music, and superstar game! Can't wait for more games from these guys.
Love this game. Art is just stunning and the gameplay is engaging.
So good, with none of the greediness, 3.99 in app at most that we can see. Will likely contribute to see more apps like this! Controller support might be fun if it isn't already implemented.
We found this game because we dig the artwork of Jed Henry. Been waiting for it to come out for quite sometime, and hoping that the game itself was good as well. It is. From a design standpoint, it's really beautiful. The characters are original and engaging (giant pigs, samurai wolves etc). Edo Superstar's gameplay is also both classic and original. From a classic aspect, it builds on the basis of many past side scrollers. Each village you set out to save has mini levels within it (like the world system from Super Mario). There are quirky fights and boss battles that also remind us of "the classics". The difficulty level is also very enjoyable. You won't be rushing this entire game in one sitting, and that's something to be glad for. Thanks a ton for putting so much energy into such an awesome product! Edo Superstar is a thrilling platform fighter the likes of Marvel V Capcom or Streetfighter but set in its own unique world. Oh and the story's cool too. We like how your character is sortof just in it for his own personal fame at first. Kindof a cheeky little monkey who just wants to be an awesome fighter. On this note, the "fame currency" is a fun mechanic. Totally hoping for more games from the team in the future! Other playable characters perhaps.
The art is amazing, and the gameplay is super fun. Edo Superstar! Don't sleep on this one.
Some amazing prints and artwork showcased the old school Japan scene. Lots of Shoguns and Samurai scenes. Imagine all the wonderful animal characters of Tekken with the light-hearted mirth of the animal characters from TMNT and toy have the vibe of this game. Give it a whirl it will take you back to the fun of fighter games from early edition game systems. This is really a fun one.
We were loving the game until it keeps crashing we have a 6 plus and none of our other games crash like this. Fix on update we'll change our rating. We really want to play this game we were getting into it NEW UPDATE after the new update no more problems we waited patiently and was rewarded we love this game so much fun and great story. The swipe controls are spot on great job guys.
Very good game, well worth the money.
Even if the gameplay weren't great this game would be worth it for the artwork, but the gameplay is just as excellent. Fun and easy to learn.
Like River City Ransom, you can upgrade skills. Beautiful artwork.
Great rpg brawler! We'd like to try this with a classic button controller.
If you like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games, you'll love this style of gameplay. The art is fantastic and the gameplay dynamics are very intuitive. Challenging yet engaging game. Well worth $1.99, do not hesitate to purchase.
This game is rich, beautiful, and full of delightful surprises. Jed Henry's art is incredible, obviously, and so is the music. The characters are cheeky and memorable. For us, the most engaging aspect of the game is the innovative fighting control system. The swipes and tap combinations seem endless and varying, with new abilities, speed, etc. Unlocking as the adventure progresses. The blocking, countering, and roll-through dodging are satisfying and creative, as are the combination attacks and power moves. Really enjoying this game.
Awesome fighting game. Great controls and story.
Great game, especially if you're into the genre.
You can tell a lot of effort went into making this right. Fun, intuitive, addicting and absolutely beautiful. Love it.
Really enjoying this game from the creator of Ukiyo-e Heroes. Well worth checking out for the beautiful art and animation alone, but the gameplay is compelling too, with a good amount of replayability.
Unique gameplay. Much better than other mobile fighting games.
This is a really polished platformer with great art and music. Reminds us of a mix between a beat-em-up like double dragon and street fighter. Easy to recommend for the price.
Love the music, the story, the art. A game anyone – and everyone – can play.
Breathtakingly beautiful and fun! Amazing game.
Edo Superstar is a great, entertaining game that's sure to meet all your gaming needs. Fun Story. Great Gameplay. Awesome Art. Easy Stat-Building. The controls will take a bit of time to get used to but once you get the hang of it, you will see there is nothing to complain about. You won't regret downloading it.
We just downloaded this app today and we love it! Money well spent.
Having lots of fun so far. Love the art associated with the game.
Best game on the market right now. Tons of levels, very easy to play, but gets extremely challenging as the levels and worlds advance. Can't believe it's only $1.99. Has the playability of a $4.99 game.
Obviously a skilled artist is behind this game. It's beautiful and very fun.
Super fun game, easy to use. What more could you ask for.
Fun gameplay and beautiful artwork! Well worth the money.
Seriously the game play is fluid and the storyline is so original. This is proof that creativity isn't dead. Great game.
Sumi-e art comes to life with a Kung Fu kick in this stylish brawler. Edo Superstar features a "made for touch-screen" control scheme that is innovative and simple to grasp making this game a one-of-a-kind action packed adventure worth checking out! Seriously, if the video's not enough- good luck- 'cause words don't do the game justice. Very cleaver, devs. Very clever.
It crashes while loading a level and sometimes in the middle of a fight. We have an iPhone 6. Otherwise great game.
