Community Insight:
Already played it on Steam but figured we would play it again on the iPhone and iPad as we await the sequel that just got Kickstarted. Was glad to be a part of that. While we agree this isnt the best of his games its still five stars and perfect for fans of old school CRPGs.
Been a huge fan of Spider Web games since day one and Queens Wish does not disappoint. Really happy playing on our phone and looking forward to new titles. One request is that game saves could go into iCloud so we could play on laptop at home and pickup in the place on phone on our commute.
The issue we had has been resolved. Our screen settings were set to zoom.
This is probably the best RPG on the iPhone! Pay once and enjoy the whole game! A breath of fresh air compared to the pay to win rpgs that plague mobile platforms! Glad Jeff finally ported a game to the iPhone.
Well done spiderweb another great title and love the fact of playing it on iPhone.
Was very surprised by how much fun this game is!!!!Great work.
This is our first spiderweb software game. We've been interested in them for a long time, but it's hard for us to play long point-and-click rpgs on our computer when we already work an office job. When we saw the new one had an iOS release, we dove in immediately. We completed the game, finishing nearly every quest, and had a blast the whole time. The iOS environment is snappy and feels great (after you turn on manual scrolling). The story is thoughtful and well-written, and the fighting and resource management never stops being fun and strategic. We absolutely love that you can't grind for resources, we actually had to think and do quests to progress. Great game, great introduction to the Vogel oeuvre. Extremely excited for whatever's next.
Lots of areas of development one this game to tend to from party to towns. The writing for JV games is always a welcome amusement. If you are experienced not only playing but beating his games we recommend playing it on hard. Though even on normal the end of the game is punishing however still manageable. We dont know how it will be on hard. We give the guy respect for creating an entirely new game pretty much from the last series. Even though this is not for us more than it is for him as he gets bored. Because there was nothing wrong with the old format he just gets tired of looking at it from what we understand. We wish he would develop it into an MMORPG. For that he would need to expand his team of course from a one man show. However we know he would do it right and he wouldnt have to worry about money anymore, so he can take more risks with different types of game creation. Because Im interested to know what else is inside his imagination. Salute to him and his wife.
Have to restart because our game was deleted. We dont guess theres a backup anywhere.
Well written story. We like the choices the game gives to your world actions and in dialogue. Excellent overall UI when it comes to iPhone. First 2d top down turn based rpg Ive played on a small iPhone that works well! The mechanics are okay. They dumbed it down to a simple tech tree with a culture overlay. We were surprised that you can instant reskill, which takes away the risk of choices, in favor of accessibility and playability. Overall this is the best 2d turn based rpg on a small ios screen Ive played. We find the game a little pg13 but the stories inside are worth your time. We appreciate the social commentaries in the game that doesnt try to preach to us. Also this is a nice rpg that you can play at your own pace. Dont need to sit down for hours. You can play for a minute or two at a time. Game style clicks with us since we enjoy gold box, classic ultima, bg1/2, fallout1,2, shadowrun games. This developer deserves to stay in business and make more games. Good work Jeff and team.
We were skeptical at first that an old-school rpg like this could be played on an iPhone. (we have played all if Spiderwebs amazing rpgs on the iPad, and the screen usually felt cramped.). But they have done a really great job of removing the tedious aspects of rpgs that often fill the screen. For example, treasure is clearly marked no more clicking to pick up every goblet you pass on a table and valuable items are instantly converted to gold. Sure, less realism, but the great tactical combat, character ability customization, and story with real role-playing choices are there. It also purposely pushes you away from repetitive grinding- another choice that had us confused at first, but soon its wisdom became apparent. Since you only get xp from completing quests, if you find an opponent or area hard to beat, youre pushed into exploring new areas & experiencing new story instead of the default rpg path of repeating battles over and over to level up. (And if you truly feel youre stuck, you can lower the difficulty to casual temporarily.) If you are a fan of old-school turn-based rpgs, you should definitely pick this one up.
We've been a fan of Spiderweb since Geneforge, and we're excited to see them coming to mobile. Hopefully this is the first of many on iPhone. The story is excellent, and we love the empire management aspect. It would be nice if quests had a more visually dynamic impact on the game world. At the least, it would be nice to have a visual indicator that a place/nest was cleared. The bases add an exciting expansion to RPG choices by making you choose how to upgrade your base based on the resources you have and what you need for equipment and flavor. Excellent game.
Ive been playing and enjoying their games since Exile we: Crystal Soulds. Great storytelling, turn-based RPG, expansive worlds. Awesome! Thanks for the IOS release.
We prefer the older games. Some interesting choices to be made here, with regard to who to back in the vassal states, but we just really prefer the old inventory, etc.
It was probably 10 hours in before we got into the game enough enjoy it enough to justify buying it. We are a big fan of Avadon and a huge fan of Avernum. And that naturally colored both our likes and dislikes based on similarities and differences. We love that the same simple, graceful look carried over for the most part. Ive seen it called old-style though Ive played a lot of older games and find Spiderwebs look unique. We love the way the world unfolds. We have to admit Im the type who cares less about strategies and more about the story. And finding treasure. We do so love finding treasure. And the bits of trash as well. Drove us crazy for a while passing all these items and being unable to interact with them. We also dont really care much about building forts and stocking them with distilleries. Oh look, another piece of wood… Overall, its a good game. But we think its moving away from some of the previous games strengths. It feels more linear and less open world in our opinion. Quests unfold in the three separate areas, but still seem pretty built on top of one another. We never really got lost or needed a guide. Maybe that sounds like a good thing. But we actually love how overwhelming Avernum, for example, is when you have over a page length of quests and really dont even know what to do next. We also found each quest area (not sure of the correct term here) very linear. Like, you get to a quest area, map changes from distant to closer up, and theres really only one way to go. No west path takes you past the barracks, east path takes you past the altar and north takes you to a little boat that takes you to a secret area that…etc. (we miss those secret switches. Or, DID we miss the secret switches?) The dungeons in Avernum and Avadon are intricate and exciting. This just felt like, spider, spider, scorpion, spider, person figure that we think is undead, spider, scorpion, etc. So, better than a lot of whats available, but disappointing compared to previous games.
We get the whole streamlined design explanation but here are 2 things we really want to see: 1. The enemy elimination animation – we find it to be silly and it is immersion breaking. Please include an option in a future patch to use classic Avadon / Avernum style death animation. 2. Include a new setting for slower walking animations. As with previous SW games, party members look like they are in a classic Benny Hill Show chase seen. Also immersion breaking. Otherwise – enjoying it so far.
Sad to say that this is, in our opinion, one of Jeffs weaker games. We can understand trying to streamline some systems and changing the formula a bit, but we think he took it into a direction that not everyone would resonate with. Hearing him on a podcast say that he drew some inspiration from Darkest Dungeons finally makes more sense as to why he made the decision to change the exp system so drastically. We hope there will be a Queens Wish 2 and 3, to see more of what Jeff does with the story of the rise and fall of an empire. As it stands, QW1 is a mediocre RPG with some good writing that makes it just worthwhile. Also, thank you for making an iOS version.
Ive spent the last 20 years playing Spiderweb games on PC, Exile, Avernum, Geneforge, Avadon, and now this. This game above all others, takes a drastic new turn in gameplay elements which has never been seen before in a spiderweb game. Theres no need for us to explain the differences because there are so many other reviews that do. We are not a fan of the game to be honest. We tried our hardest to enjoy this game, we really did. We played it for hours hoping Id find something to like about it. Is it a good/bad game? That depends entirely on you.
We really want to love this game, as we have been a long time Spiderweb Software fan. But this program doesnt size the window properly on our iphone SE, causing us to be unable to navigate through menu windows effectively.
We had heard of this developer but never played any of their games before now. Queens Wish 1 + 2 are available to download for IPhones, so it was a perfect time to try them out. Havent played the second yet but so far Im having a pretty good time with this game. Story is written well, finding loot is fun, and building up a small nation is also very fun. A lot of people we feel like could be put off from the graphics or even the style, but from our understanding this is a 2 person team with the occasional freelance help to make these games, which in our opinion is VERY impressive. We love RPGs and pretty much have played every single one made in the last couple of decades. Dont sleep on this game, Indie developers are personally holding up the gaming sphere in our opinion, with most AAA games feeling like a waste of time (and they are). Our only wish is if the developer can, to import more of their games on iPhone, and not just iPad. Not sure how much that costs or work needs to be done, but we would definitely purchase more of your games.
We love RPGs. This game is amazing. The graphics are simple. But the gameplay is amazing. Its as if they took an rpg and boiled it down to its best parts. You can choose to play 5 mins or longer. Its perfect for picking up here and there. We havent had this much fun with an indie rpg since the Doom and Destiny series. If youre a fan of rpgs youll love this. Its addictive. We cant stop playing. We cant wait to play part 2 and cant wait for when part 3 comes out.
We love the storyline and how the world gets progressively bigger, especially when you get toward the end.
Jeff Vogel is a brilliant artist, whose canvas just happens to be old school RPGs. Everything about the game is so well crafted, from the intricately designed world to the balanced, tactical combat. The story is interesting, and though theres a lot of text, it reads like a good fantasy novel, and explores moral gray areas you wouldnt usually see in a game. Ive poured countless hours into this game, and Ive loved every minute of it.
Queens Wish has the feel of a pc game from the earth 2000s. The menus and game mechanics will be familiar to anyone who has played spiderweb software games on computer. This is a deep and complex game, as can be expected from this developer, with a large world to explore, lots of NPCs with extensive dialog, and some strategy elements that set it apart from their earlier releases. If the $9.99 price tag seems steep just be aware that you are getting a full sized CRPG, not a gimmicky mobile game.
You cant access mist of the game on our iPhone 12. Seriously.
