What Makes Pine: A Story of Loss Stand Out

Pine is an interactive and emotional short story told wordlessly through hand-drawn animation and music, designed to be played in a single sitting.

It follows the story of a woodworker grieving the recent passing of his wife. Now alone in the glade where they made their home, he attempts to move on.

His simple daily chores of tending to his garden or collecting wood for the next winter are interrupted by memories of the happy times they spent together. Desperate not to forget her, the woodworker captures these memories in beautiful carvings out of the wood he collects.

Pine is a story-driven game focused on accessible, engaging interactions that pull you into the woodworker’s experience. Charming puzzles and mini-games celebrate the happy memories of their time together while deliberate chores underscore his challenges with moving on.

KEY FEATURES
The Insistence of Memory – As you help the woodworker complete his daily routine, the simple chores you’ll guide him through are interrupted by reminders of his late wife. In these endearing memories you’ll relive their happiest moments together, playing games and building a life with each other.

Community Insight:

We just played the demo but this is such a beautiful game, we almost cried. We wonder how she passed away.

We love this game so much. The only thing we dont like it that you have to pay like $6 for the full game. But this game as a lot of emotions and meanings to it. We would give this game a 5 outta 5.

Never been through so many emotions while playing a mobile game and the hand drawn art is incredible.

Absolutely master peace its not a action game or a crazy fun game.its a calm game with a great storyline and a beautiful environment and you have tasks and each time you do a task you remember thats all we will say great game tho.

We originally downloaded this because we were looking for random games to play, not expecting much but wow.. So beautiful yet so heart wrenching.. We definitely recommend this game to anyone who reads this review.

At first, when we saw the cover of the game, it intrigued us. When you download this game, it says alot withouth saying anything. This game has techniques in where you can see, and feel the atmosphere of the game, without it telling you. This game is very heartfelt, and can show the deef affections individuals make to one another. We recommend this game.(p.s we have only played the demo verison).

Rarely ever do game reviews especially if good. Usually if it's bad. This is a beautiful emotional tale we can all relate to in some way. No words or audio is needed to evoke the beauty of what's inside this game.

Its game is literally the most saddest game on earth like we would be so sad if our loved one died.

We're a widower so this is a good one for us but we'd be able to give it five stars if it had controller support.

Okay this is so sad and we see the point but 1 its SO slow moving, 2 same thing everyday, and 3 we cant get past the point where you plant the plants.

When we downloaded this game, we were expecting a full game, but we got a demo. A demo? Really? Btw we are just a 11 year old writing this review, but please listen to us. This is a beautiful game, but it is asking us to pay for the full game, when the app was free, and we thought the game was free, but only the demo is free. We hope this review can help you decide if you are going to download this game. We do not recommend if you dont want to pay for the full game.

As far as the look of this game, its beautiful. We played the demo and it felt really slow. Im not sure what the point is.

Our game keeps freezing after the memory hes having after the roof leaked, when it showed the hay wreath crown. Or is that the end.

Too much plot, carving, tree chopping, roof fixing, gardening, and etc. For our taste. Not enough time for us to make soup or whatever that food was. We would rate this game 5 stars if the soup got more screen time. Also, did the soup kill her? We must know.

Trees disappear in the endgame glitch puzzle. Otherwise, a magnificent game about moving on from loss.

Its not bad, its very artistic and authentic but lower the full game price. Pretty Expensive for what you going to do in the whole story, its more of watching than playing.

When we saw the pictures and reviews we thought oh! This looks cool! So then we got it. At first we thought oh wow this is beautiful but then we found out its actually really boring. We mean there is a good storyline we guess and its sad and all, but why do we have to do everything 5 times?! Water the bucket 5 times, pick the plants 5 times, and gather hay 5 times. We almost crashed out but then we thought maybe its gonna end soon? We dont think the game is really gonna be that repetitive then after 10 more days we got to the end. And guess what?! You have to freaking buy the game! This is very upsetting. But if you are a type of person who likes this sort of stuff, good for you Overall we thought it was beautiful but boring.

We wanted to like it, the art style and the way its told is interesting but the constant closing and freezing got old.

Thats good interesting and absolutely beautiful.

This story says a lot with no words. It takes you in an emotional adventure taking you through stages of grief and loss. This game definitely brought up past memories and thoughts, it really made us think hey the person youre in love with is still here in your life, you should take the chance before shes gone.

So we have only played the demo so we dont know EVERYTHING about this game, but what we do know of is that its sweet and sad. Its sad that so many people have to feel this in there life, we know its not losing an actual person but we had a dog (he was a boxer and his name was Felix) and he had a problem with his back that didnt come up until his last year with us. He was only two and a half and we had to put him down, it was the saddest day of our life, and we regret not snuggling with him as much, not playing with him as much, and not savoring every moment with him. But the saddest part (for us at least) in the game is when he is carving her out of wood. It shows how much affectionate he was about her, and how he loved her with all his life Im only ten (going on eleven) but we know what its like to feel pain and suffering from a tragic moment. We all have moment where we feel like nothings going to get better, but all we can do is try to get through it, we always will. We take the loses of things hard bc we have, depression, anxiety, adhd, and autism, so sometimes we take things harder than others, but at least we know Im not alone. Again, its hard, but we can do it together, and remember. You are never alone in this.

The game wonderful and so beautiful and has a lot of potential but only thing we kinda dont like is that you have to pay 5$ bucks for the full game but its a game playing.

We never write reviews as we find it stupid and time consuming. But this, its truly a spectacular experience, might a say a very important one. Sure it might be repetitive but the details and everything the atmosphere how he did all of that, sorry we dont want to spoil it, its remarkable. Coming from a person who isnt very emotional, man we cried a lot for a good 30 minutes. If we could we wouldve want to experience this like we did as our first time. It truly embodies how people are important to us.

Every detail of this game, from the plot to the art to the game play is incredibly creative. Definitely worth the download and the time. Also, if you like the game Florence, you will absolutely love this.

This isnt a game in the traditional sense. Its more of an experience. The woodworker goes through sets of repetitive actions and as you repeat them a small change reminds him of the person whom he lost. Then, youre brought to experience a part of his life with her, and the emptiness he feels after. Its a thought provoking and heartfelt aim at storytelling through nuance. Its about 2 hours of story so its very doable to sit and experience it through a single play through. We recommend to do so as youll get the full emotional trip in one solid journey as opposed to several small telling. The sound really gives it a feeling of solidarity and solemnity. It doesnt have a soaring orchestral. It doesnt need one. This is a story through minimalism and thats reflected in the audio as well. The moments where the music swells are where its helping you to feel the characters emotions in that moment. Its an excellent job of using sound to invite the user into the characters heart and mind.

This game offers a truly unique and very moving meditation on the experience of loss. The pacing starts out slow, with a woodsman going through the mundane tasks of life in a solitary forest clearing. As you move through his chores, memories of happier times with his absent wife are revealed. We dont want to give too much away, but as you play through the game, you experience the stages of grief alongside the Woodworker. This game really moved us (to tears at times!) and the art, sound design, music, and storytelling were all phenomenal. We also appreciated the simplicity of the puzzles that unlock the storyline. Im not a very skilled gamer and we felt that the puzzles made the game accessible to someone with our skill level and werent so challenging they they took us out of the narrative. This game is so unique and so human in its honest and forthright approach to loss. Its very beautiful and was clearly a labor of love from its creators. We highly recommend it.

Game is good so good that makes u cry.

Never did we think in our 21 years would we find something so masterfully made. The storyline is so gut wrenchingly beautiful. It truly captures the things people can experience, the emotions, the not knowing what is what, why am we here, what is our purpose sort of ordeals someone faces during the loss of a loved one they cared about so deeply and it depicts the mental war so perfectly. Its just perfect.

We love the slow, meditative going through the motions approach to grief. We love the art style, the sound design, the pensive music. What we do not love and what has kept us from finishing the game is the nigh impossible wood carving portions, wherein we are left to scrape futilely against the log, hoping we can divine the exact spot we need to hit on a shape that can only be described as one heck of a blob in order to progress the carving portion. In an experience where all other actions are mapped out with precision, it is baffling that this mini game leave you out to dry.

Amazing piece of art! This is beautiful. You do have to pay for the full version but, we think that the creator deserves money.

We never write reviews for games and this is the first game that has changed our mind. We played it as soon as it came out and let us tell you it was really worth it! Be very prepared to cry. We played with tears streaming lol 10/10 would recommend.

Try it out. It's very healing for the protagonist to see things and think about people. We miss our wife by doing repetitive things every day. We will think of our wife with things. Overall, it's really good! Highly recommended.

Honestly this game is just so beautiful. Its a great storyline with great characters and you can tell the developers put a lot of time on it.

Sometimes we dont know how to invoke next plot, makes the experience hard to continue.

This is a beautiful game, but it crashes in the tree scene. Please provide an update.

Starts out slow is an extreme understatement. Its beautiful animation but its not really a game other than a simple puzzle or two. Its more of a cartoon that youre streaming and its constantly buffering and you need to keep clicking something to get it going.

You get about half the game for free and then you have to pay $5.00 for the other half. The game gives a nice story and moderately ok graphics but overall chores are tedious and not very interactive for the cost. Would recommend the free portion but would not recommend a purchase of $5.00.

We think the storyline and style of the game is lovely, but the gameplay is nonexistent and boring. It feels like you're doing the same few puzzles over and over just for a little bit of the story at a time. If you enjoy slow-paced games like this where you just do a few tasks and slowly view the story thru beautiful animations, this is the game for you. For anyone else? Don't bother.

We want to love it but it consistently crashes every time the man goes outside to lay under the stars.

So we were excited to get this but it was really slow at start. It didnt make very much sense. We were playing an awhile doing not fun stuff and then out of no were it said pay to unlock full game. And we were like you have to pay!?!? Anyway it was really slow and boring but anyway thats our opinion. We would still want you to try it. Alright bye bye.
