This is our favorite chess app for analysis and playing through games.
Still the best chess analyzing app there is! Easy to use, great interface, and perfect problem solver! Nothing else comes close!!
This is a great app for iOS when you just want to analyze a chess game using your iPhone or iPad. We usually use Fritz but we dont like using Windows on the PC and there are no similar tools for OS X. This app really pushes your iPhone CPU and you get the most value out of your expensive device! But one thing missing is the ability to adjust the threshold of centipawns to trigger a variant recommendation. If the developer can just add that it would be a real good rival to even Fritz.
We absolutely adore this app.. It separates itself from others in its unique ability to view up to TEN lines of the game. It would be the best if it was the latest version of stockfish and Im begging the developers to make this happen. Make this app #1 as it deserves to be!!
We love the way it is integrated with Follow Chess, but we have two issues: 1. The variations that are given are often very short or abbreviated so much as to be useless for understanding how the given line will proceed. 2. The version of Stockfish that is used (11) is pretty old and much weaker than the most modern engines.
Very handy but can only do analysis for game positions, not arbitrary puzzles.
Possible to add an option to put your saved games in different folders?
This may be abandoned as we have seen a few reviews saying so. We decided to download it and did like it. But we cannot purchase the pro version. On our iPad and our iPhone choosing Go Pro crashes right to the Home Screen. As this is the way developers would get money we can but assume that if they wont fix that bug then the app is truly abandoned.

We like the ability to be able to set up your board and have it analyze it. Some of the bug are when you save a game if youre doing multiple games and you go back to the game it has not been saved properly. It tends be an older version of the game you saved and updated. Tried seeing how to contact the developer but was unable to find a link to contact them to submit this issue and see if they could fix it.

Keep locking, not responding to touches etc cant interrupt the app when analyzing.
No updates in eight months and the developer will not respond to questions. Still using stockfish 11 whereas the SmallFish app is currently using stockfish 14, does everything this app does and more, and it is free!!! Dont waste your money here.
We had previously bought the pro version, and now when we go into the app to get the premium version it says no history of purchase. So the premium version being cheap we went to rebuy it, only all our attempts just lead back to our Home Screen every attempt we make to rebuy it. This is very frustrating, in that we do not have access to the premium version for whatever app error is occurring.
We are a titled chess player. This app should get flushed into a black hole it is: 1. Impossible to upgrade to the Pro version on iPadOS 16+. 2. The supplied engine is Stockfish 11. Really? Were already using Stockfish 15, this is incredibly bad for an app that wants money from you. 3. Its impossible to accomplish anything on the free version because ADS continually intrude. If it were possible to give negative stars, this app would get 5. Spare yourself the aggravation and forgo this junk.
Difficult to use. Had to play around with all of the buttons and still couldnt figure out how to analyze past 1 move. Bought the pro version and it would not work. Pretty sure it stole our money.
When used in split screen mode on iPad, the position setup UI is bugged. Also it would be very convenient if there is a one-click shortcut from the analyze tab to the position setup tab.
We recently discovered this along with Your Move. It is perfect for managing and analyzing and maintaining our notes on our ICCF games, and we highly recommend it. Our one small complaint, and hoped for improvement, is that you allow us to shut off the engine in Settings. We do not use an engine for analysis, and it is troublesome that is flashes up every time we use the app. Of course, we can turn it off at that point, and set the lowest possible settings, but it is distracting and one cannot unsee something. We updated the app and now it is completely bugged out. Arrow are pointing from empty squares or in the wrong direction. Totally destroyed a good app.
Excellent tool with many functions. Outstanding support. We emailed an issue with the new iOS & it was turned around very shortly. Thank you Asim.
It used to be great, now it’s become totally unusable on ios 9.3.5 due to the analysis engine crashing all the time. Most of the time you can’t even make 2 moves in a row without the engine crashing. Once the engine crashes, the only way to start it again is to close and restart the app. The developers claimed some crashing issue was fixed on a recent update, but it did absolutely nothing to solve this. Simply downgrading to the last usable version would fix this, but of course apple know better and won’t allow us to downgrade. I’d give this 0 stars if it let us.
As a chess progrem it doesnt resemble to anything else. We found it terrible!
We really like that this app, like so few others, supports split screen multitasking, but it doesnt quite work. When you enter split screen multitasking, the screen is not re-rendered for the new screen size, so its not usable. But if we rotate device and rotate back, it is properly re-rendering during orientation changes. But we feel silly rotating our device back and forth just to get it to recognize the new split view screen size.
Very powerful, great integration with iChess puzzles. Improvements needed: doesnt remember settings for chessboard color! Would be nice to not show arrow for the side you are playing. There is an option but it turns off arrows for both sides.
We like this app but found either we do not know it or there is a bug when trying to import a game from chess. Com. So we with hold one star. We select share to copy to clipboard from chess. Com but analyze this said invalid PGN. The same worked for other apps. Anyone can give a hint ? Thanks.
We wanted a few specific things in a chess analysis app. First, we want to choose whether to enter moves for a whole game, or just set up a single position. Next, we want to look at MULTIPLE computer-generated lines, not just the single best move. Finally, we wanted to save and load games and positions easily. This is the only app which we found that does all of those things well. We agree with other reviewers who have noted that the app is not so beautiful – we hope the developer will partner with a good UI artist at some point – but functionally, this app cannot be beat.
We use it every day. We hope they upgrade to Stockfish 9 soon as it is an improvement over the current version 8.
The layout of this app could you some tightening up. We just tried to import a PGN and the instructions contradicted itself. Eventually we found a paste button and when we tried to use it, the app just crashed. Not once, not twice, but every time.
We have spent countless hours holding our chess book in one hand and playing through the variations on Analyze This with our other while relaxing on our couch. We feel like this is possibly the most efficient form of chess study that is possible, especially when working through a chess book. Additionally, Asim and his team have been very prompt responding to emails and even released an update today to address our specific issues. Their customer service is very old school in a good way… Asim certainly strikes us as a principles over money kind of guy who loves and believes in his products. 1498 to 1822 USCF while using this app in 2017… Cant wait to see what 2018 brings! :)
We have been using this app for analyzing games at chess tournaments, for reading chess books and even for accumulating a database of our games PGN notations. This app is truly awesome! Easy and light, but extremely useful. The one feature we would add to it is the ability to scan and recognize a chess position setup from a book, but that is not such an easy thing. At this point we cannot imagine learning chess without this tool!
If you want a simple analysis app for chess, you cant beat this app.
We downloaded this app and it had some problems on our iPad Pro initially. We emailed the developers and they were great at communicating with us to try to fix the problem. Within a few days, everything was not only fixed but improved upon. We have never been more impressed with the communication from app developers before. We were trying to find an app to be able to analyize our own games and create our own database for our iPad (which is a lot more rare than one might think). Upon emailing other apps, they only had things to say such as, "maybe we will include that in the future". The analyze this developers were emailing us back and forth multiple times a day to try and fix the app. They actually care about the quality of their product. The app is not the prettiest app in the world, but it works. Hopefully they will continue on the path of hard work that we have seen to further improve the app and create more features. Definitely a necessity for serious chess players with an ipad.

The developer does a great job of responding and promptly addressing issues. We have tried just about every iOS chess app there is. This is one of our three favorite ones. Others may have more features but this is the most polished chess app we have seen. If we could choose one feature to see added we would like to see the ability to search for games by a particular player.
If you are looking for an app to use for playing over games in books and magazines, this one is ideal. It has two crucial features that we have not been able to find in other apps. First, you can create and analyze variations by playing alternative moves. The app will automatically create variations on the text portion of the screen. To get back to the main line, just tap the move made in the actual game. Second, you can start and stop the engine (Stockfish 7). So if, like us, you want to guess moves before seeing what was actually played, you won’t have an unwanted display of engine analysis that gives away the answer. In addition, engine analysis can use up a lot of battery power if it is running all the time. With this app, you only use the engine when you need it. The board, pieces, and layout are clear, bright, and professional-looking. Glad we found this one!
This is the only app we’ve been able to find on the App Store that allows us to copy and paste a PGN from another app for analysis. Additionally, we like that you can click through each turn and see what the computer recommends as the next move. This has really helped us see our mistakes in chess games and learn what moves would be better alternatives to the moves we make in games. It also gives us a good idea about which moves and mistakes were pivotal for us either gaining or losing advantage. The best part of all is that all these features are FREE!
