Dive into Backgammon Online 3

  • Also available for OS X in the Mac App Store

Backgammon Online was the first internet-capable backgammon app in the App Store and Mac App Store. Play anywhere at any time against real people.

You can choose between several servers to play on:

  • the vivid First Internet Backgammon Server (FIBS, see fibs.com) or the similar TigerGammon (see ti-ga.com)
  • or Game Center

FEATURES

  • On FIBS there are also very sophisticated bots of different playing strengths which are a serious challenge to even the most skilled Backgammon players
  • Creating a new FIBS account is just a matter of finding a suitable user name, no web-site visits or personal informations required
  • Automatic forced moves and bear-off
  • Integrated FIBS Chat and Game Center Text and Voice Chat
  • All aborted matches are automatically saved
  • Ratings for each player are based on match results and other factors, thus you can easily find a player with your playing ability. The same algorithm is used for both FIBS and Game Center accounts, thus it is easily compared
  • Finished matches can be saved in the MAT file format and later downloaded to your desktop computer using iTunes. The matches can then be analyzed using professional backgammon software
  • Tap or drag or multi-drag your tiles back and forth, using backgammon on a device has never felt so natural
  • You can also play offline (use as an Backgammon Board)

Find out what gamers are saying about Backgammon Online 3:

We have been playing on this app for over 20 years and we’ve met so many friends that play backgammon all over the world. Its fun to go on at any time of the day or night, and see familiar faces. Its the next best thing to being there, as Its not like we have a choice in the matter. How we long for the old days and playing at a club where everybody plays backgammon.. Fibs was especially a lifesaver during Covid. It does have a tendency to have issues at times with the server but thats usually repaired right away. We are so grateful to Patti for hosting the server and taking care of it for all these years. Highly recommend.

On FIBS nothing could be better than this app. Flat out. Maybe theres better but we could care less since we want nothing more than to play live opponents(or bots which on FIBS all bots are identified) with no interference or ads or delays and with maximal speed. Period.

We like this apps no nonsense interface and usage of FIBS. However, its been 2 years since the last update. It could usage a forgotten password feature, bot identifiers, more modern boards, etc.

Chat now does not work and crashes app when you select chat. Playing on an iPad 2.

We’ve been playing on this app since it was released and the competition of players from all around the world has been great & the games very enjoyable:) Real-time play on the best interface there is. Join now!! We need more players.

We’ve loved FIBS and this app for years. Lately (summer 2017) a hardware issue has taken the FIBS servers down. Temporarily of course. 64 is a great app for playing backgammon against humans and expert bots. No non-fibs based app can even come close… If you don’t know, 64 is a nicely designed interface linking to the independently run FIBS server. We felt we should send some love their way because people were blaming them for a FIBS issue out of their control. Plus they’ve responded to reviews telling you how to change the server within the app and get to playing again. That’s support to us.

Beautifully rendered app, but way too many bots. Waaaaaay too many bots. Ridiculous amount. And there is something weird about the game. Can’t explain it. You’ll see once you start playing with other ‘people.’

Bought this App but it needs a server that appears to be no longer be supported. We have been trying to get authenticated for weeks. "Miss Manors" the BOT, looks to be a dead mailbox drop. What a waist of money.

Have been playing for years and #1, the algorithm is skewed. It is impossible to roll 12-13 times and never roll a one. The bots have unbelievable luck. Our support issue we all of a sudden received a message that our connection is rejected and our server and port settings are invalid. No idea what that means and no way to trouble shoot or fix. No way to get help.

This app is fantastic. As a front end to the FIBS server, we always have people or bots to play with. The interface is intuitive, snappy, and very stable.

It’s hard to find other players.

The dice are not random. One of the players is constantly getting doubles while the other has the worst possible roll. Virtually impossible to play against a bot and win no matter what level the odds are stacked against you. Need to randomize the rolls and stop giving one player or a bot continual doubles. Horribly ran and operated.

The interface to using chat while playing is not good. However for playing FIBS it’s just fine.

To offer previous comments about crashes or login problems, we want to mention that the developers seem to have worked out the kinks. Our app never crashes nor does it have login problems. That said, here are our other comments, pro and con Pro – As opposed to many BG apps where u play against a computer program, here you are playing real people all over the world. You can chat while playing, create a friends list, rate players according to their honesty (sadly some players drop out of a game rather than lose), know the skill level of a player, etc. Playing against people is way more fun than playing against a computer program. Con – Fibs uses a weighted scoring system that aids low scorers and hinders high scorers, ostensibly to try to even the playing field. We don’t agree with this one bit. You should get credited the points you win and debit the points you lose. Con -Fibs will deny this but after playing on fibs for about a year, we can categorically affirm that the dice is not random. We can predict when doubles will be rolled given a particular board setup and player action. Con – There’s no app support. No way to offer feedback or report problems. Overall, we still give the app 4 stars because we’ve had such fun connecting and playing backgammon with people all over the world.

We have been very happy with this app for a long time – it is by far the most convenient way to get to FIBS that we have seen. Recently the app started crashing every time we open it. We can only assume this is some incompatibility with iOS 7. If this gets fixed then our review would be 5 stars.

There are a dearth of online ways to play backgammon against real opponents, so it is tempting to play BGOnline2 just to play backgammon, but there are problems with the system that outweigh this to such a degree we rate it 1/5 and do not recommend it. First, the community cliquish. Most importantly though is that the dice are very peculiar – weird enough to wonder what is going on, but you do not have the data to answer the question. Calling the dice random does not address this because no one is looking at stats that take into account the context of the game – that is, if we roll doubles when we need them, but you roll doubles when you are on the bar and cannot get in – there is nothing random about that, but it may appear so because the overall quantity of doubles is even and may even be close to the expected random variable value. No one addresses this and the conversations can get quite rude and arrogant. We would love to find another system because there is something off in a way that very creep about FIBS and this client program. Sorry.

We were a FIBS player for a long time, and it’s been nearly impossible for our sister and us to play backgammon long-distance until now. We’re so jazzed to be able to tell her about this in the morning. Thanks, Golde, for bringing this interface into the mainstream here and in the Mac app store. Much appreciated.

Very disappointed. Unable to log in and play. It’s a rip off.

We liked this app a lot before the update. No longer works. Won’t login.

New update is full of glitches. Login issues, ghost shadows on the board, sometimes only displays 2 of your tiles at the start of a match. BBBAAAADDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ever since this latest version on 9/4 the app will crash unexpectedly during a match or fail to launch by not logging in to FIBS. And each time you try to select the settings option "switch direction" the app immediately quits.

Nice interface to FIBS, but currently only three choices for board color.

We purchased Backgammon Online 2 for access to FIBS. However, as there is not an option to add identifying numbers on the board, and we are partially color-blind, we found the interface very minimal. Opponents were not tolerant of our hesitations caused by the lack of identifying numbers. On the plus side, it interacts with iTunes to record and display matches.

This app is very often frustratingly slow, and causes players to become annoyed with other, thinking the people are slow to respond.

We have had 3 FIBS games get stuck when the client said we must make 2 moves, but there was only 1 to make. In one of those cases it happened when we had born off our last checker and won, but it kept insisting we make another move. Otherwise, it is the iPad FIBS client we’ve been looking for. Please diagnose and fix!

We’ve been using this for months now to play on FIBS and we’ve been very impressed with this app. We think it is very cleverly written and does everything we need it to. In "expert" mode you can type commands right into the fibs terminal if you want to. We love how well it is integrated into find and gives you a players repot rep. The laptop software we previously used didn’t do this.

Too glitchy to rate higher than 3 stars.

We wanted an interface to the FIBS server and this app provides it. This is better than the Backgammon Premium app we have. It would be 5 stars if priced right.

Software freezes and is upside down, don’t waste your money,

The worst thing about this game is after some ppl just drop the game they usually don’t come back and after like 10 saved games caused by some idiots, you won’t even be allowed to play. Is it to hard to make a system that this would be prevented? After all this isn’t a free app. So do not use this app!!!

And a great multiplayer backgammon game.

Don’t let the mixed reviews for this app fool you. The Online FIBS, where you can play people all around the world, works great! We have been on the FIBS network for the last 5 hours, since we bought the app, and we have had no glitches. We can’t speak for the Game Center part of this app, because we have not tried it yet. We wouldn’t expect it to work as well as the FIBS network, only because the community isn’t big enough yet. At least for the backgammon community. We are sure it will grow over time. FIBS is the place to be if you want to play backgammon online, though. We’re from New Jersey and we just finished playing an hour of games with a guy from Egypt. Crazy! We highly recommend this app if you were big into FIBS before the iPad. It’s a great way to continue to be a part of the online backgammon community without have to be stuck in front of your computer. Great job on the app guys!!!

This version is not as good as the v1 iPhone app installed on the iPad. It’s very slow to move and does not have good color contrast options. Don’t buy this one, but do buy the v1 for iPhone and install it on the iPad. The only inconvenience is that it doesn’t do player list landscape, but it’s much faster then v2.

Would be nice if game center actually worked!
