CHRONO TRIGGER (Upgrade Ver.) Reviews
Surprised this game is still getting support from the developers, the only thing that would make this perfect is a crt filter.
Its a good game and its cool how you turned a controller game into a mobile game.
We think wed all love to see the original graphics as opposed to the artificially scaled graphics that the app currently has, so Ill leave that discussion out of this review. But finally, SquareEnix has taken this port to the level it needed to be at to be an acceptable way to play ChronoTrigger. The support for widescreen is a must in todays gaming market. The additions such as point of interest and conversation markers is a big plus for those who may accidentally come across something and not realize you can interact with it. Though you can definitely finish Chrono Trigger without grinding if you play strategically, those who would like to grind will have an easier time now with the addition of faster battles using auto mode. The icing on the cake is that for those who purchased this app previously, you get all these features without having to pay for another remaster or some such. We hope this marks a new philosophy for SquareEnix with their mobile titles, and we continue to see great updates for more games. Thanks, SqureEnix!
The first time we played this game was on an snes at our friends house. The last time was on PS3. We love this version, it has joystick support the added movies for the game. And now its full screen.
We played this on iPad a few months back and cant stop thinking about it. Everything we play is in comparison to Chrono Trigger now. We even caught myself the other day while we were out hiking thinking it would be nice to bury some wood in the past and then come back to our time and have petrified wood. What has this game done to us. A must play. Seriously.
Amazing game and amazing port. One of the bests games we’ve ever played.
Add iCloud please Edit now this is a definitive version now if you can do the same for final fantasy tactics, saga frointer, LoM, and ff9 in adding full screen support that will be perfect.
Brings back our childhood in the best way.
Loved this game growing up, a truly timeless classic adventure. If there could be an update that would allow the Voice Over accessibility feature for blind people to also play the game that would be amazing, as we have lost our eyesight and really miss playing games.
This is the best JRPG and arguably the greatest RPG ever made. Art was done by the creator of DBZ and music/design was but the guys behind FF6&7. Its absolutely amazing.
Still some text bugs though. Starting with Magus, and continuing to prehistoric times, the text was jumpy. Also, one of Magus flames didnt spawn in the circle around him. The Robo anime sequence isnt triggering.
This review is for the March 10, 2022 update. This is a good update, and it’s nice that it got one years later, but it doesn’t fix some of the most annoying issues. Controller support. It’s technically there, but button presses work like they do on the touchscreen rather than being properly configured for a controller. What this means is that in certain menus or, most notably, in battles, the game responds when you RELEASE the "confirm" button rather than press it. This often makes the game feel laggy and like it’s slow to respond, and makes it annoying to play on higher speeds. Apple TV support. Again, it’s technically there, they check that box, but all the touchscreen buttons are still there, now blown up on your big living room TV. This means you’ve got a big MENU option in the upper right corner the entire time. The filter. It’s not the worst we’ve seen, but it’s still pretty bad and can’t be disabled. And now, a new annoying issue: Adding the ending log is great! It’s better than the log on the DS version, which didn’t let you rewatch the endings. However, if you, like us, happened to burn through all the endings only a week ago and got the achievement for every one, guess what – you have to do it all again to unlock them all in the log. Argh!
The updates help a bit with presentation like auto battle to increase speed though you just do regular attacks, and extras like art and soundtrack though after you beat it unfortunately, compared to the final fantasy pixel remasters where its there immediately. This game was a pioneer to new game plus (10 endings with levels and equipment carrying over) and had good menus for its time though this port doesnt let you customize and isnt as colorful. At least you have sidequests and anime cutscenes (though no voice acting unlike Lunar Silver Star Story Touch). Youll have to verify which combination attacks do more damage separately vs together as they have a lot of variance (you heal faster with Frogs heal or items than Crono and Marles aura whirl that takes 2 people to heal 3 without any buffs). We are glad ice water can field wipe mobs of enemies at least. Theres also no fast travel between time periods (end of time with lights you have to prompt or memorize rather than a menu of times), let alone 12000 BC Zeal teleporters for tons of backtracking, with libraries, snow and caves that are similar. The good parts are the active time battle is lightning fast, sealed chests that you time travel for after Zeal are far better than duplicate chests in multiple dungeons (you charge with a pendant in 600 AD and then revisit in 1000 AD (backtracking might as well have you go the long way) to get a better item and then go back if you have the patience, for the original item (the challenging sunken desert sidequest rewards this when you prep to absorb elemental attacks which is amazing). They at least let you access your party in the menu as opposed to going to the end of time where theyre at for more backtracking. Marles Haste is overpowered given it is a permanent in-battle speed boost but it helps as an equalizer vs area of effect or counterattack spams bosses can do. Youll have to sometimes use optimal characters like Final Fantasy 3 did with jobs based on the dungeon, as in Chrono Trigger, they mainly use one element of magic. We do feel its an affordable rollercoaster ride ($10 with $5 sales is good) that has moments as much as it hiccups. The trial has you go to jail (even if unanimously found not guilty) regardless of the outcome though the minigames at the millennial fair and judgments on priorities like what you do with Marles pendant are a unique idea). And the time travel ship redeems a lot.
Once in a while, the enemies get a bug where they literally dont stop attacking. Its like they have 9999 speed compared to your 10 speed. Dalton for example dropped 80 iron half hp balls before we could even attack once. The nus doing that too is very annoying. 6 nus nonstopp hitting us to 0 life and then killing us with 1 hp dmg.
What a great job on the remake and having so many characters gives great replay for end game. Please developers add an option to adjust music / sound volume and:or the ability to turn off the in game music. Theres no way to turn off the audio for example playing podcasts while playing you hear the podcast and the game sounds. Can you please add this to your backlog for feature requests? Thanks a million!!
We love this game since it released back for SNES. We were only 4 when the original came to North America but we played it shortly there after because our brother whos older than us purchased the game and played it a lot! We mostly enjoy the story and turn based battles are always fun when playing classic role playing games. The game is a nostalgic trip we wouldnt trade for anything. We also have the Nintendo 3DS version, the PSN Store version through PS3, and the Windows version to go along with our iOS version we completed back in 2018. We think someday this game deserves either a remake or new entry into the series altogether. Thanks Square Enix for this amazing game and if you remaster it for PS4 Id buy!
We started this game on an emulator, we couldnt progress because of a problem. Desperately we searched the web on how to fix this, but the top solution was to buy it of iOS. At first we were skeptical, but after playing it and finishing it we LOVE IT. Everything about it, from the extras, to the NPCS, and the Main Cast. Everything about this game is perfect, and we think the way it was delivered on our phone was perfect as well. The fact that we could just take out our Phone and play on the spot was beautiful. Thank you Square-soft for releasing this game on iOS. We love this game and your company, and we will do our best to play the rest of your games as well.
One of our favorite older games to replay! Still great. One thing that would make it even better is if there were a way to toggle sounds/music on and off, so that we could listen to music from other apps during the game. Thanks for making this available on iPad!
Our best friend had told us to play this game for years and we had never done it. So glad that we decided to give it a try. Our god was we blown away by the beautiful music, the depth of the characters, and especially the fighting! This is the best turn based game that we’ve played! Please do yourself a favor and get this game! (Chrono for smash bros ultimate!)
We just purchased this game and it runs fine! Have had no problems except in the beginning getting used to the controls and switching targets. Other than that we’ve had no issues. Im glad the cut scenes are in this version as well because we’ve never seen them. Overall great game and great for the mobile . We were skeptical because of some of the negative reviews but Ill say we disagree with them because we’ve had no problems with it. Great job!
Love this game! We found the adaptation to mobile devices as good as the original. The extra side quests (the reptite requests) felt a bit tacked on and not fully integrated with the rest of the game. When will there be a Chrono Cross app for iOS?? Id pay to play that game on our iPad!
Thanks for the throwback. We miss games like this. BTW where is Zelda?
Should add controller support!
With an Xbox controllers its the perfect port. Purists are going to complain its missing features which is lame. Its one of, if not THE greatest RPG, and we would argue greatest game of all time on an iPad with controller support. Its done well and for the price youll get a whole lot of gameplay and story. Next to dead cells and castlevania this makes ios a legit gaming system.
The controls, the fighting mechanics, the characters and plot are what make this game so great.
Im a idiot lol we forgot it was woot like that.
Heard a lot of good things about this game, and decided to fork up the money to give it a go. We absolutely love the game. No complaints. Story is fantastic, soundtrack is catchy, characters are developed well, and the gameplay is excellent. Its definitely the greatest RPG we’ve ever played. We will most certainly be going through another play through.
We never leave reviews for anything, yet here we am… Dropping 5 stars.
We own the original on our old Super Nintendo. Best game of all time. So glad to own it on our iPad.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE – Port this version over to the Nintendo Switch!! We would absolutely buy this game for the 18th time if you do!! :) And if you would be so kind, PLEASE bring Chrono Cross to the Switch as well. We would pay top dollar for both of these titles, as Im sure would MANY others. Thanks, and keep up the great work!! :) :) :) :)
This is probably one of the games got us into RPGs after our brother showed it to us. It was one of his all-time favorites as well until he passed away. We know that the iPhone is more than capable of rendering the sequel of Chrono Cross well. So we would love to see that we have ability at some point to complete whole storytelling. With so many choices in the original game here as well as the sequel game we would love to see avalible at some point. The replayability of these games is amazing.
Truly the best RPG. Best story. Best music.
Playing on an iPad is much better than the Nintendo DS because of the larger screen, and the enhancements makes this version better than the Super Nintendo version, and the PlayStation 1 which suffered from long loading times with its menus.
Love this game and we enjoyed this port. Controls take some time getting used to but since its on a phone we guess its understandable . Hadnt played it since we were a teenager so it was as nice.
In 1995, we repeatedly called our local game store where we had pre-ordered Chrono Trigger on SNES. When our copy finally arrived, our love of this time-jumping adventure was immediate from the moment that the box was in our hands. Im no longer 15 years old, but when we play Chrono Trigger on our iPad or iPhone, it takes us back in time to a place where we had so many fond memories of the story and characters in this wonderful classic.
Please add in settings the option to remove these new stat lines being the green Hit Points line bar and blue TIME line bar. We love Chrono Trigger and we did not update our iPad so bars are not there but our iPhone has these new not cool lines that make the battles not cool as the battles are cool with no Double Line Bars under Crono’s feet lines for a child. So add an option to remove these lines in the settings above save game settings buttons options menu please to make game as it was like before last update.
The port to mobile is excellent. Not at all buggy, its the same experience with some great improvements: – Everything is a little faster: load times, warping, etc. Shaved down a lot – Auto button: automatically makes your characters fight in a battle, simplifies most of the battles in the game tremendously Helpful note: took us a bit to figure out you can select who you are attacking/healing by swiping left and right.
Chrono Trigger is a great game! Wonderful story with many great boss battles. They dont make them like this anymore.
puts nostalgia glasses on Almost beat this game in our youth until our mom discovered us cutting studies for gaming and took it away, now as an adult we return again to play and conquer it finally. It ports nicely although if you are using touchpad we recommend battlespeed set to 8 (slowest), battle mode set to wait, and movement set to always run to counteract the lack of controller. Our only gripe is lining up your interact (talking, open chest, ect) which requires getting used to… If only they slightly extended the range or something, meh its hardly a dealbreaker. We love this game and they did good job on the port. :-)
Such a fantastic game and this is a really good port. We’ve never seen this game run so smoothly and it seems they’ve somehow widened the screen for certain areas that have the assets to do so. This game does not come with any quality of life improvements like many of the final fantasy ports. No fast forward, no character max skill. Just an auto attack. Which is all you need. What makes this game so good is that it requires no grinding to level up your character. Every battle can be beaten with the right strategy. All enemies have a weakness that can be exploited. Over leveling your character would break what makes this one of the best rpgs of all time. Our only complaint is how likited the settings are. We would have preferred some more ui options and control options. Nothing is customizable. You get what you get. Luckily that’s almost perfection.
We know this is an awesome game but we dont know how to change the language in the game setting. Any help?
Chrono Trigger really bucked the trends of its time. Fighter-type characters are much more than spamming a regular attack button. Multiple characters can attack at the same time via skill combos. Theres no shortage of skills and tactics to use – in fact, its more complex than most modern mobile equivalents. Instead of random combat encounters that are traditional JRPGs, this has enemies clearly visible on the same terrain that your characters walk on, allowing you to avoid combat to some extent on your own skill. This appears to be among the earliest JRPGs to use active time combat instead of the regular turn-based that just about everyone else was stuck on. There are multiple endings (choice matters) and New Game Plus (remember what we said about this game being ahead of its time???). There are some endings and features that are specifically built so you can only reach them in New Game Plus. Also, as you probably guessed, this game goes easy on your phone battery. Great for travel on a bus or train where you might not have a dedicated power plug. Our only major gripe is poor targeting controls in the mobile port, although that isnt anywhere near enough of a problem to knock down a 5-star rating. Get it? Got it? Get this.
First time playing this masterpiece. Its a great time and works well with the PS4 controller. Also cloud saving allows you to pick up right where you left off on any device that supports it.
Love the game. Port to portable is awesome! Only complaint is Norstein Beklers Lab is a pain, especially the mimicking game. The colored buttons should be a bit more sensitive.
I’d read great reviews of this game and as we have played it has been a very pleasant surprise. A great game with many very pleasant surprises, and great music, too. Definitely, if you get to a point in the game where you cannot seem to progress, be sure to look up online guides to this game. Some reviewers have complained about not being able to catch a particular rat at a certain point in the game, when you start bumping against the rat, immediately tap somewhere else on the screen and the rat starts talking to you, hope that helps anyone who gets stuck there.
Full-screen support on iphone X, bug fixes, finally 5 stars.
Transferred over perfectly. Its a little rough playing with the controls on the iPad or iPhone, but if you get a Bluetooth controller, its just as good when the game first came out on the SNES.
Wow! This was the first RPG we ever played, and as its unavailable on the PlayStation Store Im so excited to have it on iOS! Bluetooth a controller and airplay it to our television and away we go! So excited to share this masterpiece with our children and to relive the story of Crono and his crew!
