CHRONO TRIGGER (Upgrade Ver.) Reviews

Great port of the game , so please consider add mac support consider the m1 chips mac.

Surprised this game is still getting support from the developers, the only thing that would make this perfect is a crt filter.

Its a good game and its cool how you turned a controller game into a mobile game.

Its a fabulous game, but please add controller supporr.

So far the game runs well. We hope the devs keep it optimized for devices such as ours which is a 11 Pro Max. Otherwise we may have to turn off automatic updates for it or something. We have always been a fan of this game and it is great to be able to have a copy of it even if it is a digital copy. It is sad that the series is somewhat short lived however. As far as we know; there are only two official dedicated sequels to the game called Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross. From what we understand; Radical Dreamers was the first sequel but it was text based and was very obscure and unappealing and easily neglected because of those factors along with difficulty issues. It would be nice if Square could release a updated version much similar to the original game with the same engine and some of the various mechanics that made Chrono Trigger such a legendary game. We remember reading there was a group that recreated the game with such changes before, but only as a fan based project sadly and nothing official.. We are sure it would be very enjoyable if even as a text based game, Radical Dreamers made a port over to the mobile market with some improvements to the user interface and combat systems. It is surprising that while Final Fantasy IV had been updated so many times; other games including ones related to the more notable have received less attention.. As for Chrono Cross; we never actually played this one myself, but we have heard and read both good and bad things about it. In a way; its a title sounds as if it needs a major story rewrite or something. We do not remember much given we only know so little to begin with. But if it is ever re-released; hopefully it will also be updated. We really want the story from the original game to continue and carry on and for Chrono Trigger to be recognized for the long term. There are still things we have yet to try with the game such as Bluetooth and Wired Control support and limitations and general gameplay in the long term. Since we only recently downloaded this version; we still have much exploring and testing to do, but again, so far it is great and runs well! We have only ever played the version for the Super NES. We wanted the version for the PlayStation but it has been hard to obtain and the one that could be played on the GBA/ NDS had some issues we were not found about due to certain restrictions. We noticed many of the remakes coming out are beginning to have more CGI themed cinematics and/ or gameplay such as FF IV. We mean no offense, they like that they are being updated, but some bits do look weird. And we also noticed some reviews on games like the Mana games needing updating to run more efficiently. Anyway; please keep up the good work and please do not push to hard to make some already great gamers more perfect than they already are! Its like the FFVII Remake; we are one of those who do not enjoy The whole release by episode and the digital content themes.. It is actually quite the frustration.. Thank you.

We think wed all love to see the original graphics as opposed to the artificially scaled graphics that the app currently has, so Ill leave that discussion out of this review. But finally, SquareEnix has taken this port to the level it needed to be at to be an acceptable way to play ChronoTrigger. The support for widescreen is a must in todays gaming market. The additions such as point of interest and conversation markers is a big plus for those who may accidentally come across something and not realize you can interact with it. Though you can definitely finish Chrono Trigger without grinding if you play strategically, those who would like to grind will have an easier time now with the addition of faster battles using auto mode. The icing on the cake is that for those who purchased this app previously, you get all these features without having to pay for another remaster or some such. We hope this marks a new philosophy for SquareEnix with their mobile titles, and we continue to see great updates for more games. Thanks, SqureEnix!

Its chrono trigger so its good. 5 stars.

The first time we played this game was on an snes at our friends house. The last time was on PS3. We love this version, it has joystick support the added movies for the game. And now its full screen.

We played this on iPad a few months back and cant stop thinking about it. Everything we play is in comparison to Chrono Trigger now. We even caught myself the other day while we were out hiking thinking it would be nice to bury some wood in the past and then come back to our time and have petrified wood. What has this game done to us. A must play. Seriously.

Played it back on the SNES. Honestly we were not expecting to like the mobile version. We were wrong. This is great! The worst part is the cutscenes (kept from the PS1) that feel like they interrupt the moment, but you can skip them and there are not that many.

Chrono Trigger is a timeless classic. We love it, and we hope that if youre reading this that you do or will love it as well.

Amazing game and amazing port. One of the bests games we’ve ever played.

Add iCloud please Edit now this is a definitive version now if you can do the same for final fantasy tactics, saga frointer, LoM, and ff9 in adding full screen support that will be perfect.

This is our fist time ever playing this game, it looked so interesting and thats it is, a great game with a awesome story if you like rpgs youll love this game. Seriously its great please consider it.

Brings back our childhood in the best way.

As far as we can tell this is a pretty good port of CHRONO Trigger. We’ve clocked in 12 hours so far and its never had any glitches or crashes and we play on the IPhone X. We had some trouble with a mini game at Leanne Square where you toss the rocks at the creatures to push them back but other than that its been alright. It was just slow response time to our button pressing.

Loved this game growing up, a truly timeless classic adventure. If there could be an update that would allow the Voice Over accessibility feature for blind people to also play the game that would be amazing, as we have lost our eyesight and really miss playing games.

This is the best JRPG and arguably the greatest RPG ever made. Art was done by the creator of DBZ and music/design was but the guys behind FF6&7. Its absolutely amazing.

This game is one of the best- The Best RPGs ever, and its on iOS. Seriously. This is awesome. The only thing that would make it better, would the additional cut scenes from the PlayStation. Otherwise, very nice.

Great port with amazing quality of life changes. Just one issue: in Extras, under Illustrations, you can view any picture, but when you tap the screen to exit that picture, the app crashes.

Seriously. This is one of the best rpg games of all time. Played since its release. Just play this all the way Im end out if you havent. Good game.

We played this game on SNES and it plays so well on the iPhone. We’ve replayed it so many times over the years and was so happy to see it available on iOS and have continued to replay it. For anyone who is a fan of RPGs we HIGHLY recommend this game. It is truly a classic.

This is the way to port jrpg games. We prefer to play on iPad. When controller support is taken away from games that had were released them, it feels a little dumb to say the least. This game does it correctly. Thank you for the effort.

If you love RPGs and have never played this SNES Square-soft classic do yourself a favor and pull the trigger and buy it. It doesnt even have to be this App Store. This story takes you threw time and will be an adventure that you will never forget. Forget about the graphics and delve into the story and have fun grinding levels. There is a new game + mode which is well worth it.

Really love the quality of this port, well done. Movement needs improvement – for example in Proto Dome level when chasing the rat, cursor isnt reactive enough for movement. When standing on the save points, cant really click on them and have to click a bunch of times around the save points to activate the save menu. There needs to be a way to turn off sound in game.

Chrono Trigger is one of our favorite games and one of the first JRPGs we’ve played. We remember blind renting in back in 1995. We absolutely hate the retranslating that happened for DS and this version but we guess thats where were at. We only wish that those chat bubbles were removed or at least make it optional. Also if controller customization was added to the settings menu like it was originally.

Im not sure why, but its hard to hit the wheel on the dragon tank. We can change the target to anything else no problem, but tapping that wheel doesnt always work, and when we fail to tap the wheel, it thinks Im locking in the default selection of the body. That wheel killed us twice because we just couldnt attack it. Please fix this.

We love this game but wish the mobile version. You guys have on here had arena of ages it was on the ds lite version of CHRONO trigger and was a lot of fun you guys should add it im sure Im not the only fan that likes it.

If you play this, get a game controller attachment that you can put your iPhone in. Otherwise the movement lag is very pronounced. Otherwise a very good game.

Still some text bugs though. Starting with Magus, and continuing to prehistoric times, the text was jumpy. Also, one of Magus flames didnt spawn in the circle around him. The Robo anime sequence isnt triggering.

Its a classic rpg, but it suffers from the same annoying music bug that plagues squares latest ports. Basically, the music resets after every battle. We really hope they fix this along with FF7.

The diagonal controls stutter and when you select illustrations in extras, it crashes the game. Update was good, however, needs more optimization.

This review is for the March 10, 2022 update. This is a good update, and it’s nice that it got one years later, but it doesn’t fix some of the most annoying issues. Controller support. It’s technically there, but button presses work like they do on the touchscreen rather than being properly configured for a controller. What this means is that in certain menus or, most notably, in battles, the game responds when you RELEASE the "confirm" button rather than press it. This often makes the game feel laggy and like it’s slow to respond, and makes it annoying to play on higher speeds. Apple TV support. Again, it’s technically there, they check that box, but all the touchscreen buttons are still there, now blown up on your big living room TV. This means you’ve got a big MENU option in the upper right corner the entire time. The filter. It’s not the worst we’ve seen, but it’s still pretty bad and can’t be disabled. And now, a new annoying issue: Adding the ending log is great! It’s better than the log on the DS version, which didn’t let you rewatch the endings. However, if you, like us, happened to burn through all the endings only a week ago and got the achievement for every one, guess what – you have to do it all again to unlock them all in the log. Argh!

The updates help a bit with presentation like auto battle to increase speed though you just do regular attacks, and extras like art and soundtrack though after you beat it unfortunately, compared to the final fantasy pixel remasters where its there immediately. This game was a pioneer to new game plus (10 endings with levels and equipment carrying over) and had good menus for its time though this port doesnt let you customize and isnt as colorful. At least you have sidequests and anime cutscenes (though no voice acting unlike Lunar Silver Star Story Touch). Youll have to verify which combination attacks do more damage separately vs together as they have a lot of variance (you heal faster with Frogs heal or items than Crono and Marles aura whirl that takes 2 people to heal 3 without any buffs). We are glad ice water can field wipe mobs of enemies at least. Theres also no fast travel between time periods (end of time with lights you have to prompt or memorize rather than a menu of times), let alone 12000 BC Zeal teleporters for tons of backtracking, with libraries, snow and caves that are similar. The good parts are the active time battle is lightning fast, sealed chests that you time travel for after Zeal are far better than duplicate chests in multiple dungeons (you charge with a pendant in 600 AD and then revisit in 1000 AD (backtracking might as well have you go the long way) to get a better item and then go back if you have the patience, for the original item (the challenging sunken desert sidequest rewards this when you prep to absorb elemental attacks which is amazing). They at least let you access your party in the menu as opposed to going to the end of time where theyre at for more backtracking. Marles Haste is overpowered given it is a permanent in-battle speed boost but it helps as an equalizer vs area of effect or counterattack spams bosses can do. Youll have to sometimes use optimal characters like Final Fantasy 3 did with jobs based on the dungeon, as in Chrono Trigger, they mainly use one element of magic. We do feel its an affordable rollercoaster ride ($10 with $5 sales is good) that has moments as much as it hiccups. The trial has you go to jail (even if unanimously found not guilty) regardless of the outcome though the minigames at the millennial fair and judgments on priorities like what you do with Marles pendant are a unique idea). And the time travel ship redeems a lot.

Square Enid is incapable of slim dunks. Port one of the best RPGs to mobile? Sure. Oh but it has an awful ugly smear over everything and the UI and font is terrible.

They improved the overworld walking mechanic and make it so you can move diagonal rather than simply adjacent paths. A big gripe we had with this game is they removed the FMVs that the PS1 Version had. This mobile version use to have it. But its now removed since the update? What gives?

Once in a while, the enemies get a bug where they literally dont stop attacking. Its like they have 9999 speed compared to your 10 speed. Dalton for example dropped 80 iron half hp balls before we could even attack once. The nus doing that too is very annoying. 6 nus nonstopp hitting us to 0 life and then killing us with 1 hp dmg.

This is a port that available on windows steam but mac steam, and while it is available for IOS it is not supported to run by apple silicon laptops??????? This is unacceptable with this very high price.

How should we play this Classic without music and sound. It is happening just to us?

Really planned on giving this five stars, but the god awful touch controls made Luccas flashback sequence glitch out. Theres zero way to save her mom.

When you come from the Nintendo DS version and play this. Its not even worth the buy. Missing cut scenes. Just buy the Nintendo DS version. Expensive but its the definitive version of Chrono Trigger.

What a great job on the remake and having so many characters gives great replay for end game. Please developers add an option to adjust music / sound volume and:or the ability to turn off the in game music. Theres no way to turn off the audio for example playing podcasts while playing you hear the podcast and the game sounds. Can you please add this to your backlog for feature requests? Thanks a million!!

We love this game since it released back for SNES. We were only 4 when the original came to North America but we played it shortly there after because our brother whos older than us purchased the game and played it a lot! We mostly enjoy the story and turn based battles are always fun when playing classic role playing games. The game is a nostalgic trip we wouldnt trade for anything. We also have the Nintendo 3DS version, the PSN Store version through PS3, and the Windows version to go along with our iOS version we completed back in 2018. We think someday this game deserves either a remake or new entry into the series altogether. Thanks Square Enix for this amazing game and if you remaster it for PS4 Id buy!

We started this game on an emulator, we couldnt progress because of a problem. Desperately we searched the web on how to fix this, but the top solution was to buy it of iOS. At first we were skeptical, but after playing it and finishing it we LOVE IT. Everything about it, from the extras, to the NPCS, and the Main Cast. Everything about this game is perfect, and we think the way it was delivered on our phone was perfect as well. The fact that we could just take out our Phone and play on the spot was beautiful. Thank you Square-soft for releasing this game on iOS. We love this game and your company, and we will do our best to play the rest of your games as well.

One of our favorite older games to replay! Still great. One thing that would make it even better is if there were a way to toggle sounds/music on and off, so that we could listen to music from other apps during the game. Thanks for making this available on iPad!

Our best friend had told us to play this game for years and we had never done it. So glad that we decided to give it a try. Our god was we blown away by the beautiful music, the depth of the characters, and especially the fighting! This is the best turn based game that we’ve played! Please do yourself a favor and get this game! (Chrono for smash bros ultimate!)

We just purchased this game and it runs fine! Have had no problems except in the beginning getting used to the controls and switching targets. Other than that we’ve had no issues. Im glad the cut scenes are in this version as well because we’ve never seen them. Overall great game and great for the mobile . We were skeptical because of some of the negative reviews but Ill say we disagree with them because we’ve had no problems with it. Great job!

Love this game! We found the adaptation to mobile devices as good as the original. The extra side quests (the reptite requests) felt a bit tacked on and not fully integrated with the rest of the game. When will there be a Chrono Cross app for iOS?? Id pay to play that game on our iPad!
