Dive into Crostix

Welcome to the world of acrostics! An acrostic, also called a crostic or double crostic, is a cousin of crossword puzzles, with clues and answers whose letters are rearranged to form a quote from a famous (or not-so-famous) author. If you’re familiar with acrostics, you will quickly see how convenient they are on the iPhone, because letters are automatically copied to the correct place as you type them in.

Crostix, the online library of acrostic puzzles, is now available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. It includes 150 puzzles, from easy to fiendishly hard, and you can buy more puzzles right in the application. For free sample puzzles, download the aptly-named Crostix Free.

The program has all the features you’d expect:

  • get hints for a single letter or an entire word,
  • see your score, based on how many hints you needed,
  • change the font size by pinching,
  • rotate the device as you like, and
  • get help on all program options.

If you’re new to the world of acrostics, the application also includes a short description to get you started. More tutorials about acrostics are available on our Web site!

What’s Fresh in the Latest Update?

Discover what’s new in the recent update of Crostix on 4th October 2016:

This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Three new books! Crostix Books 12 and 13, and a second book of Larry Katzman’s Gaglines puzzles. Updated for iOS 10. Unfortunately, that also means you will need at least iOS 8 to run this new version. Our apologies to those using older devices.

But most importantly, we hope that this new version fixes the evil and long-standing bug which caused the app to be stuck in "Waiting for Data" mode for new books. Let us know if you still have problems with this; fixing it is our number one priority.

Excellent puzzles from easy to fiendish! We can’t get enough!

We’ve always loved Anacrostics. We’ve been doing them with pencil and paper for years. This app works just like the printed ones, but once completely filled in, you get immediate feedback as to whether all entries are correct. Theyre fun and challenging, especially at the higher difficulty levels.

We love word puzzles and this is one that works very well – great interface; nice gradations on clues; super variety of topics and quotes.

We have spent many hours enjoying these puzzles and learning many things we did not know before. We hope that will continue to be additions to the Crostix library as we have completed most of them that are currently available.

We love this app, but there have been no new puzzles for several years. It’s easy to use and most of the puzzles are information and fun to solve. We like the more complicated puzzles, not the gag lines. However, the Sherlock Holmes puzzles are extremely difficult. We exhausted the Mumford puzzles quite a while ago, which makes the current version of the app worthless. PLEASE add more puzzles soon!

One of the few Ill actually pay for which says a lot. We’ve always loved this kind of puzzle. Id love it it started with some free letters on the puzzle to get you started but all in all we really enjoy playing.

Overall, way too easy. As mentioned elsewhere, in-app purchases do not all work. Almost a year and this has not been fixed??? Update: Still cannot make in-ap purchases as of Dec 2017. No way to contact the developer. Downgrading to one star, as is totally useless.

We’ve enjoyed these quote-acrostic puzzle for a long while, and we recommend them to anyone else who like this sort of puzzle.

Hard to find these wonderful puzzles. We’re happy to find this app and we hope they keep them coming.

We have always liked acrostics, and the automatic cross-filling in the Crostix app takes away the only negative of this sort of puzzle. The choice of quotations for the app is a real plus. We have enjoyed some of the quotes so much that we have been inspired to read the books they are taken from.

These are great acrostic puzzles! There are a number of different themes and levels of difficulty. Wish they’d release some more puzzles soon!

We enjoy Crostics very much but do wish that there were more of the difficult categories. The short quotes and easy category just don’t offer enough of a challenge.

We used to love double-crosstics in the NYT and magazines, and we’ve been very happy to find and enjoy this app over the past year. Being online and able to easily delete a whole clue answer permits a much more fun approach to the puzzle than doing them in ink on paper. We too was frustrated that we seemed to be stuck in limbo for several weeks, unable to complete the purchase of Books Ten and Eleven, but just now we tried buying the Headlines for the first time. There was a new AppStore purchase agreement we had to OK, and then suddenly the floodgates opened for our other failed purchases in this App.

We love crostic puzzles, and this app has an intuitive interface. It’s easy to enter letters into either the clues or the quote. The app sometimes crashes, and we wish there were a few more hard puzzles. But it’s lots of fun and the quotes are interesting.

We love the way this game works. We also love that the additional libraries are reasonably priced. We hope it keeps going for a long time!

We love crostics, and we deeply appreciate the way filling in a square in either the clues or the quote automatically fills in the corresponding square in the other. We’ve bought most of the books available, and an enjoying them all at their differing difficulty levels. There are a couple of improvements I’d love to see: First, I’d love to have the ability to choose to skip over already filled squares in both clues and quotes. Second, I’d really love to have a space (perhaps one that could be toggled in and out of view?) that shows the first letters of the clue answers. On paper, we can sometimes get useful hints to clue answers by recognizing names or titles thus spelled out, but on our iPhone we absolutely can never see more than three of those letters at a time, which really doesn’t work!

We love acrostics and have a hard time finding paper books, so we play here. We enjoy the puzzles a lot and am on Book 10 – almost out of books to play. What then? The only thing we wish were different is that the initial letters of the clue answers don’t spell out the name of author and source. So these are acrostics, not double-acrostics. But we love not having to erase all the wrong letters.

We’ve had this app for some time, and we had loved it. However, we just got two puzzles in a row that were offensive–one used the word "Chinaman" and the second had a quotation on the topic of whether "Gypsies" could ever be honest. Extraordinarily offensive; we’re deleting this app immediately and encourage others to do likewise. We can, and will, get our word puzzle fun elsewhere.

While we really enjoy anacrostic puzzles this app’s in game purchase feature does not work. We have already done the first nine books ad nauseum and am frustrated that we cannot buy the latest two books.

We enjoy this app and have found the "elementary" Sherlock Holmes puzzles exactly the right difficulty level. Some of the short puzzles (captions, historical headlines) were too easy.

Very well done and good practice for trivia contests, teasing one’s memory for snippets of poetry, history, geography and science learned long ago. Ross.

Croatix combines two puzzles in one. What you figure out in one puzzle will help you solve the other.

We have become addicted to solving these puzzles with our morning coffee. They range from fairly easy to very challenging. The clues are fair, literate, and accurately define the answer. That’s what we expect from a well-written acrostic. Just as we were nearing the end of the list of puzzles we found that we could buy another batch for a small fee. We especially enjoy the Sherlock Holmes puzzles. Well worth the nominal price. Keep them coming!

It is refreshing to have clues that do not focus on names of movies or actors or similar trivia, though we haven’t tried a hard one, yet. For the less difficult puzzles, at least, one just needs a good vocabulary.

If you find this game, you will love it! Because you’ll never find it unless you search for and love anacrostics :-) Kudos to both mother and son. It is a great game, and we love the quotes!

We love this app! We rarely get the paid versions of games, but this was well worth it. We used to buy Acrostic books at Barnes and Noble. This provides the same enjoyment but in an easy to use format. No pencil and eraser needed. Nice quotes, clever clues, puns. Its all fun.

We enjoy this a lot. We do wish that the scores for each word would be kept somewhere so we can see how we’re doing.

We’ve worked a handful of these acrostics and so far, the quotations and word lists are top notch. But we miss the little cross-reference numbers that most acrostics have. The lack of punctuation is a bit off-putting, too. Doesn’t mean we won’t buy more! It’s not easy to find puzzles difficult enough to entertain us as much as these do.

Pretty good UI and fun puzzles. Nice to be able to get a good shot of acrostics.

We paid for the Crostix Big Book a couple of years ago. Today we were sent an app update to "fix" bugs. Well she fixed us! Though we already bought it, our completed puzzles show blank. Then the HELP button told us to press "buy it" and it would not charge us since we previously purchased it. But it did charge us. We want our $1.99 back AND our completed puzzles. What a mess. Don’t buy this. It was crashing a lot!!!!!

We absolutely prefer doing acrostics with a pen on paper, but when that isn’t feasible, this app is the best alternative. Great variety, good interface, and interesting clues.

Superb. We love every one of them.

59 of 60 solved without help, but most very tough. Looking forward to the next set.

Easy interface with appropriately challenging puzzles. We love it.

We’ve owned this app for awhile and feel it is fun and challenging. We like the variety of puzzles available.

Easy to use and stable. Extra tidbits of information about quotes after crostix are solved.

We’ve always enjoyed this app and honestly haven’t found anything remotely close out there.

We like the app a lot and play it frequently, but we find many of the new puzzles too easy – like the Headlines – or not very interesting. The new Sherlock Holmes based puzzles, called "Elementary, our Dear Watson", are intelligent and challenging. For us, they’re the best Crostix puzzles so far. If there are more like this out there, we want them!

We love Crostics and these are a great mix of easy, medium, hard and brain explosion! Well worth the small amount you pay.

We have them all and up to the Elementary series of Sherlock Holmes puzzles averaged 97% with no hints. Most puzzles were good and others like headlines or cartoon captions were weak. We are a long term Acrostics fan having worked every book in print. We are also a Sherlock Holmes fan having read the complete works three times. We say this not to brag but to make clear that the Elementary series of puzzles is unsolvable. The purpose of a puzzle is to provide an entertaining challenge not an impossible task. Even using a Google search to assist in answers – which we seldom do – did not work. We will think twice before buying another set of puzzles from these folk.

Challenging puzzles in a simple format. One of our favorite games. We never get bored with it and appreciate the lack of bells and whistles.

We’ve been playing this app for over a year. Easy navigation, clever puzzles, and there are often more added. Well worth the price!

So cleverly designed. Totally love the format. So happy we found this.

The price was a bit off-putting, but we consider it 4 bucks well spent. We even bought the additional books. Am now waiting on the next addition. Hurry up guys! :)

We absolutely love Acrostics/Crostics!!! These are the most creative we have encountered on line and the most challenging. We could play for hours!
