Crying Suns Reviews

Easily one of the best games on iOS. Challenging gameplay, compelling story, fitting musical score, and unique aesthetic combine to provide a great experience. After buying the game, we (apparently) played it for about five hours per day, completing the campaign in about a week.

We downloaded this game because of the App Store recommendation, and we were not let down. The visuals and story are mysterious and interesting and the music is great. We love how some elements are clearly influenced by other science fiction games/films/books such as the intro cutscene, which appears to be heavily inspired by The Matrix. The combat takes some getting used to, partially because we have not discovered a way to review old tutorials, but once you gain a basic understanding it becomes much more fluid and engaging. One suggestion: we would greatly appreciate if you make it so that you can select a ships target/route before it actually spawns on the battlefield? We find it annoying to have to pause the action to place the squadron, unpause to let it spawn, and then pause again to select enemy squadrons or systems.

You dont find a game like this very often. The attention to detail in this title shows a true love for all things geek. The dev team are both Fans and creators. Fans first we think. Bravo on creating one of the best games we’ve played all year.

It took a few hours to get the hang of Crying Suns, but once we knew what we were doing we were hooked. The plot is decent, not the greatest but its rare for video games to stand on the merits of storytelling alone.

This game is great, balancing difficulty really well so we were always challenged, but also just needed to play one more level. Excellent combat, gratifying wins. Played through several times.

Great storyline and fun gameplay, they have a time constraint to keep the game moving in one direction. Storyline is very well thought out and a blast to play. Fight sequences were unusual initially, but we really like them now.

Very fun. We were worried things would be too small, but we have an older phone, smaller than modern ones, and had no control issues whatsoever.

This game is amazing and the story Id great. If you loved FTL you will love this one even more!

Rogue-lite veteran here and this is every bit as good as games like FTL. Could definitely see putting in a lot of hours. Highly recommend. Wanted to report a bug – our game crashes when we use a parasite on a juggernaut.

Very good story, thousands of decision and RNG is phenomenal. Please add more content. We have so many ideas.

We finally found a game we can both enjoy and get lost in. We have been looking for any game that could actually hold our attention for more than 3 days. And finally, finally we found this one! We have Ben playing this on and off for 2 weeks now and we are so happy about it. We are looking forward to seeing what else is in store! Thank you creators of this game! Thank you!

Good tactical and strategy game with a well-told story that ruminates on our growing dependence on technology and speculates on what the singularity might be like. Striking pixel art design. Stunning all around.

Its in the title. Support indie games! Seriously, this is a great example of what the indie movement can do. Or go buy a loot box to play a generic AAA time waster. Your choice.

FTL vibes. Great stories. Fun characters. Would recommend.

Wishing for an endless run mode which after a folder jump, all properties (officer, squadrons and weapons) that did not start with the run will be converted to scraps for buying customizes at the beginning of the next folder.

Great game but would love controller support!

Great gameplay. Terrifying scarcity. And a surprisingly interesting story. Im loving it so far.

Excellent story and world building with satisfying game play. It takes the FTL formula and builds on it in really creative ways. Highly recommended.

We would give this 5 stars it is a great game! Our only complaint is being on a mobile you can not see much of the battle field . Needs a zoom feature lol.

Crying Suns is a resource tipping-point adventure game with a tactical combat sub-theme. A lot of thought and effort went into the story, game mechanics, and art. Its been really fun playing on an iPad. We have two criticisms that we hope will turn into improvements. First, the story is very angsty and difficult to believe. There are a few truly mature motives, and most enemies you meet want you to kill them. No one in the entire game, except perhaps its protagonist, wants to live a free and happy life, even through trouble. It must have been written by a teenager or a nerd. Second, tactical combat takes a backseat to resource extraction and purchasing. It would be more to fun play against a more complex enemy AI as long as there were a flattened reward curve for resource gathering and purchasing efficiency. The most fun part of the game was role-playing as Captain Picard, organizing away missions, conducting fleet battles, interacting with different factions, and exploring. In our opinion Crying Suns is still one of the best games available for the iPad as of 2022. Recommended.

Crying Suns is overall very good, it has wonderful bit style graphics, meshed well with 3D and neat looking environments. Its approach to some of the enemies however, is bit too much. The style of game this is has a certain amount of RNG to all aspects. This applies most of all to combat and it can only be mitigated, not eliminated. The RNG is most notable when facing bosses. There are times, for example with one of the final bosses, where your victory seems inevitable. You suddenly die though, because he activates a force field that lasts 10+ seconds (thats a very long time in this game) allowing his units to wipe yours completely and then eat through all of your hull before you can spit out anything to try to defend yourself. We cant tell you how many times the guy wiped us, just because his ability last so long. As for weaponsthe majority of field weapons (for killing squadrons) arent very useful, even at Mk 4+, so being abruptly forced into situations where theyre your only defense almost always ends up with you losing. Retreating isnt an option if your units are already in combat. At the same time you cant not have them, because without them most boss squads overwhelm even Mk 5 allied squads, whether they counter them or not. Regular anti-battleship weapons seem fine, even OP at times with the right setup. There are other times where the game feels too easy, because enemies either dont use their abilities, or RNG just so happened to decide your regular old Mk 3 Frigate is so OP its allowed to wipe out the entire enemy fleet, including countering types. Youre usually on the opposite end of the RNG though. The story is there and its not wall of text like, but it is dialogue heavy. So theres plenty for story only guys to pour over, with enough to give the game plenty of replay value. Characters feel real rather than like just another bad guy who is evil just for the sake of being evil. They have actual motivations, driven by legitimate human emotions and behavior we can observe right here on our own world. Customization isnt really a thing but, it does exist to an extent. Just not in the way youd normally find it existing.

Primarily hampered by a relatively short game loop, and a combat system that feels like it has one too few dimensions. That being said, this is 100% worth picking up for fans of FTL.

The story kept us engaged enough to finish on easy. But the combat is not much fun. When we were done on easy we went back to try the game on normal. Even when you get some synergy its just not very satisfying. The ships should not be called battleships, they dont have hardly any capital ship weapons just anti fighter guns and the whole combat revolves around a rock, paper, scissors of different fighter types. The graphics would have looked great 20 years ago but Im not a huge fan of the hey lets go retro for the graphics look that is popular now. Though some of it is attractive, like seeing an enemy ship blow up and some of the artistic cutscenes. Also, long before we finished the game we were already seeing many of the same NPC stories repeatedly. The game needs: Battleship weapons More of the random story content A better combat system we will continue to try the combat on medium but its really not feeling fun now that the story is done.

Looks like a fun game but we had to put it down since our eyeballs hurt from reading small text.

Its a great game with a great story but we cant get passed the final part without it crashing, we’ve uninstalled it and re downloaded it and it keeps happening. We really want to finish it but this bug is making it literally impossible.

We give it two because it kept us engaged enough to finish the story, but we were bored with the gameplay at about chapter 2. A lot of luck. Combat is repetitive and boring. We are never going to play it again. Exploring the brief alternative pixelated optional endings arent enough for us to boot up again.

The game is somewhat simple but starts out ok. Then you find that you have basically experienced everything it has to offer in about 5 min. Everything after that repeats the same thing with a thin girl of change. There is no strategy or skill you can use to influence most of the decision points, it is just a roll of the dice. On top of that every 6 ish planets you start over with none of your advancements retained.

Spoke with developers nearly a year ago, they said they are looking to make the IOS and PC versions to sync, so far nope. Graphics are pretty low Rez, virtually no live action/interactive video, yet uses the video processor to full extent drastically reducing battery life, why? No achievement goals to attain.

We do not understand the high ratings for this app. Removing it now and wish we had not wasted the money on this app.

Text is too small buttons too small. Sheesh devs stop programming on your desktop monitor.

Like a good story and some real time strategy? If so then this game is for you. They did a fine job integrating it to mobile just like their description said they did. The combat (exclusively spaceship battles) is interesting and fleshed out. Youre also consistently presented with something new whether its an upgrade or a story beat. We really appreciate the care put into this game. Here are some other features we liked: Beautiful visual art and animation Fun and interesting dialogue with a surprising amount of personalized characters A complex universe and society that makes progress and exploration really fun Space combat that makes you think on your feet The only problem we had was that during space combat there was always a slight chance that Id select a wrong ship or target because of their very small size and tendency to be so close to each other during combat. But it wasnt a huge issue. Hope you enjoy it!

We’ve played this game on pc a lot and its an amazing game and now we have it on mobile.

We’ve been playing games from this makers. We have enjoyed FTL since its inception. This is basically FTL new and improved!

This game deserves more praise. So well thought out, and sleek design/graphics. Honestly cant speak highly enough about this game. If you are a fan of FTL you will love this game.

We played this game into the ground on PC, and had to jump back in on mobile. No regrets!

Its what FTL shouldve been. More in-depth story line and more strategy.

We had stumbled across this after getting crying suns for free on pc, hearing it was similar to FTL, one of our favorite games. It has many influences of FTL, but its an entirely different game with a lot more depth and complexity. That is both good and bad. FTL was so simple to learn but hard to master, and this one has a lot more going on with it so theres more to learn initially before you start to really understand whats going on. That being said, if you liked FTL and you like sci-fi you really need to check this game out. Worth it!

The game is amazing, but we almost didnt play it because of how small the text is on the phone. Please allow for an increase in text size.

The devs did a great disservice to ths game with the awful writing. Most people won’t have a problem or won’t even notice it but it really irritates us. And by writing we mean the dialogue script.

The text is so small that this game is completely unplayable on any iPhone. Not sure why they would even offer it. May work on an iPad but dont waste $9 to play on your phone. Complete Rip Off!

Did anyone test this on an iPhone 12 Pro Max? First of all, the text is so small and the font so poor that we can barely see it even with reading glasses. But, even worse, Im stuck at the beginning because the button to close map is under the iOS close app bar that appears on the bottom of the screen.

Excellent game! Very engaging even though its Herbert-esk to its very core. That is what makes it so endearing we think. Worth every penny and replay value is great as well.

There are five chapters and three sections for each chapter. As you go along you collect scrap which is used for upgrades. You also need to collect fuel which is also used for upgrades. The dumbest part of the game is that after each chapter you start the next chapter completely from scratch. You dont have access to anything you collected besides maybe an officer (still cant figure out how they determine that non-sense). If you die during the chapter, yep, start over from scratch. And then to top it all off, a lot of missions are a coin toss but good luck coming out ahead even 50% of the time. This has to be one of the lamest, most frustrating games we’ve ever played and we wish we could trade it in or at least snap the disk so no one else has to deal with our mistake. The reason it gets the one star instead of zero, is because the story is somewhat engaging. Good luck trying to get through it though.

Loved the game, loved the story. We played through on normal, and found it to be fairly mild. Only had a few deaths and a few really close battles. Anyway it was perfect for us, if we wanted to sweat the whole way, we guess we could have tried the hard mode.

This game is great. Highlights are the excellent soundtrack, the hex-based combat system, and a story thats engaging and especially elaborate for a strategy game. The advanced tactics update makes it even better. We own the game on steam, and we own the game on iOS (playing the game on iPad Pro 12.9). We highly recommend the iOS version, as the controls are very intuitive. Looking forward to experiencing everything that there is to do, and also, a sequel. No reason not to grab this game.

We wanted real time strategy, we got it. We wanted resource management, yep! We wanted our decisions to have consequences, got that too. Seriously be prepared to spend hours with this game.

Enjoy the game. Challenging yet rewarding. After this most recent update however we have been experiencing game crashes and a reset to the previous thing we accomplished…. Sadly this has happened twice in through the looking glass on the acts final boss. Please look into this….

Please add controller support.

So, Crying Suns is a great game. It doesnt have the same phenomenal writing as FTL, but we’ve been playing it a lot on our phone since FTL only supports iPad. The reason for 2 stars is because A) for some reason, they make you choose between the game audio, and podcast/music audio. Even though they give you the option of disabling the in-game music, you still can only pick one to hear. Also, and we could be wrong, but we would expect this game to run at 60fps, especially on the latest hardware, but it is locked to 30fps. If these two things were gone, this would easily be a 4-5 star game.
