Heroes of Normandie Reviews

Fantastic port. Still some minor bugs.

We had been very close to deleting this game from our iPad, but we are glad we didnt because the publisher finally released an update that fixes the infamous "assault bug" where both sides would roll sixes every time in close combat. This bug had essentially broke the game since close combat is not only frequent but it also is often game-deciding. As an app publisher myself we were completely mystified why anyone would publish a game of this caliber and then completely abandon it without so much as a bug fix update for over a year. Even if it didnt sell well, a bug-fix for something as egregious as the assault bug would have been a minimal common courtesy for those who did purchase the game we order to make it playable for them. Im rating it 4 stars instead of 5 mostly because while the game itself is excellent, we cant rate it 5 stars given the lack of service the publisher has shown so far. We will reevaluate that rating in the future if this update marks a renewed commitment to this title by the publisher.

Is there an update coming for this game? Really would love to see an update so it doesnt die out. Just a performance update, and if possible the ability to zoom in/out when making missions. Hard to see whats going on when on IOS.

Been disappointed with other slitherine games on here, a lot of them, actually. Took us a long time to pull the trigger on this one, giving the price and size of it. Glad we did, they finally have a game we would recommend …

This is a great war game ported from a board game to iOS. We’re playing it on an iPad and it’s a lot of fun. We’ve been staring at it for a long time at the game store. We’ve wanted to play it for a long time but wasn’t sure we could rustle up someone to play against us. Well, now we can play against the iPad. What I’d really like is "Shadows over Normandy." But HoN is a great game even if SoN never happens.

This game is rad and we love playing it. But can you please add notifications to multiplayer for when playing online? That would be awesome! Thanks!!

Fun World War 2 board game . We couldn’t get the physical copy at the time. We’re glad they had a digital port. We later got the a physical copy once playing this for a while. They only negative is not seeing more of the expansions that are offered with the physical copy. We guess this wasn’t a strong seller since the store hasn’t been updated for a looooong time.

But you REALLY need to fix the bug where in assault both parties throw a 6 in the first roll, everytime. It is unacceptable for a boardgame, and we cant see how it would be hard to fix. The rest of the game is very nice, well done, very fun.

This is an awesome implementation of HoN. But it has no support for bugs or new content. And on our iPhone the Assault rolls always come up 6 for both sides. Worthless until fixed.

Our game is broken, even after a deletion and re-load. In assault, both sides always roll a 6. It never changes. Looked on the company’s forum and at least one other person has noted the same problem. Seems like something’s stuck on their PRNG. We will revise review when it’s fixed.

Fix the assault auto if a 6 die and Ill leave 5 stars.

We love the depth and complexity in this awesome strategy game. Just as an FYI-I spoke to Devs this morning and received a response/resolution within hours of reaching out to them. There may be some question as to if HoN is still in active deployment. We are not clear of what exactly is meant by ‘active deployment’ in the forums, but our experience with Slitherine has been outstanding. This a great game and we believe it is worth the price.

This is an amazing recreation of the board game and a good port of the PC game. We personally think the text is perfectly legible on an iphone 7. The only thing we would ask for is more expansions and for the roguelike campaigns to have truly randomized maps and scenarios. Other than that, this is amazing!

This is a fun adaptation of the board game. Only problem is our completed campaigns are not carried over to our phone from our iPad and vice versa.

This is a great game, and we have really enjoyed it, but there are still a few frustrating bugs. We have gotten to the final scenario of the U.S. Roguelike Campaign, and after we set everything up, the Ai starts to draw its cards, but then just sits there. The "Ai Cards Phase" never ends. We abandon the mission, then hit continue and it goes right back to the Ai Cards Phase. We’ve also had trouble with vehicles being placed just off the map and not being able to select the vehicle. Also, after our Marvin set was hit, his card now messes up the rest of the cards on the purchase screen (all jumbled up and unable to equip). Hope these bugs will be fixed in the next update.

We really enjoy this game. The graphics are good, game play is smooth and there is enough variety in units and cards to keep things interesting. However, we’ve run into two bugs that drop this from a five to a three. First, we ran into a problem in which we could not finish one of the campaign games. We would get to the scenario at the end of the allied campaign and the game would crash. Second, and more frustrating, is that, at time, when attempting to move a vehicle, the game locks up. It does not compete the move and we have to restart the app. We’ve only seen this with vehicles, although it may be a glitch that can affect any move. If these are fixed, we’ll regrade the app. For now… Okay, but needs a bit of work.

Insufficient help on setting up forces for DYO matches. Game just doesn’t translate well to tablet.

Picked this up since we’re a huge fan of the board game and even have the PC version. Wanted to help get the family into it before we progressed to the tabletop. On an iPhone 7 it’s a crime with the font size interface by just attempting to view unit and card info with how small the information is displayed. No real excuse for it as we have plenty of games that have way more information that has to be called up with a tap and display perfectly as if we are looking at a physical playing card in our hand. For an iPad this game would rock. We’re chalking this up as a handy cap on myself when we play with family and friends since we already know most the rules and can attempt to play it blind.

Seriously, the majority of the text is barely legible on an iPhone 7. The rest of the text is laughably microscopic. 20/20 vision here. Game seems like it would be fun – if we knew what was going on.

Just purchased the game and it crashes when a game is loading, can we have our money back or fix it?

Don’t count on being able to read the text with the iPhone 6/s, the screen is too small. They could afford to make the text bigger.

Reading through the gameplay performance issues, we had some doubts about the performance of this game on our iPad Mini 3. No issues so far while playing. Very smooth. The gameplay reminds us almost of a tabletop Company of Heroes. At least, if we had to translate COH mechanics of cover and rock, paper, scissors type countering into a board game.

Great sound, graphics and gameplay. We really loved the in depth tutorial. It took us step by step teaching us the basics of gameplay. There’s a full wiki so that you can look up anything you didn’t quite understand. This game is one of those easy to play a little harder to master games. There are four or five difficulty levels so really anyone can play and have a great time. The graphics and sounds are fantastic and there’s a nice touch of humor too. Three campaigns, a rogue mode, and a full game editor round out this very full featured game. Bravo!

There are a number of standouts about this conversion from the cardboard version 1. It’s not a ‘straight port’ a lot of work has been put into the look and feel. It is a very dynamic looking UI 2. The plethora of modes available: Campaign, online play, rogue-mode, map editor, build and army. All very nice 3. The incremental tutorial in the campaign. Adding new features as you work along. Point 3 brings us to an important point. We thought there was a complete absence of some cardboard version features until they were revealed later on in the campaign. Opportunity Fire and Smoke is present, just not at the beginning. This is the most fun we’ve had with a board game port since Carcassonne ‘back in the day’

Freezes when you use two armored vehicles in a row. Won’t let you use self-ordering units after all ordered units finished. Really expensive for unfinished game.

Honestly this a bit of a protest review. We’re really enjoying the game. There’s some blatantly and unnecessarily sexist dialog in the final tutorial mission though. If that gets changed in an update our rating goes to 5 stars. We Facebook messaged you guys about it as well.

Great mobile game. Big fan of HoN the board game, awesome to play with music and sound effects. Totally worth the purchase, hours of fun to be had. Anyone that picks this up will not be disappointed. Don’t listen to the negative comments about bugs and what not. Issues will be resolved in time. Great game!!!!

Plenty of content. Includes scenario editor. Lots of difficulty levels with a challenging AI as you move up. Fun mechanics of gameplay with cards, limited amount of units to strategically order per turn, line of sight. Great in-game wiki. We first thought unit info was too small but there’s a green & white info icon in upper right corner that looks overlayed with junk like other reviewer mentioned but just tap the icon – works fine and basic unit info is easy to read. Crashed once on iPad 4 , but opened with no loss of turn. One suggestion – give yourself plenty of time to use editor as that doesn’t save until completely designed and ready to play.

There are 3 different campaign modes with full of content. There are ranges of difficulty levels from casual play to challenge the season players as well. We peeked in the multi-player and there are people waiting to play so that’s good news as well. This isn’t one of the traditional Slitherine war games but the table top experience is awesome and fun.

Great game! Looks like unlimited replay with Five campaigns (3 regular + 2 rogue). Skirmish mode and a full editor which allows you to create battles from a blank slate. Running on an iPad Air2 and have had NO CRASHES except while reading the rule wiki. The DLC was fixed within 24 hours. Deeper than it appears.

To all those complaining the game is buggy make sure you restart your iPad after install. It runs well on our year old iPad. We see iPad 2 is not supported. A few features from the board game are missing but otherwise this is a great digital conversion. They have created the feel of a board game on the screen. A few small bugs here and there that will be fixed with updates but don’t let this stop you from downloading.

We were a little skeptical when we first bought this game due to a lot of bad reviews. But we were quite relived when we began playing and haven’t had to many issues with it. We think it is a Great War and strategy game and would recommend it to anyone who loves board games and war games.

Love this game, couple of things need to be fixed. Can’t rotate the screen and sometimes we get bumped out of the game for no reason (but does save our progress when that happens). Get these fixed and we will up it to 5 stars.

This is a terrific game of Hollywood-style WWII combat, easy to learn but offering lots of fun options. It’s excellent! Our only beef is that a bug won’t let us finish the last scenario of the tutorial campaign. We win, but it puts us back to the start screen and thus doesn’t award us the prize for completion. This has happened four times now. But so far, the rest of the game seems OK. Well worth the price.

The game system has a lot going for it. It’s complex and the interface is elegant. There is also a lot of content. Unfortunately it’s buggy, and the text translation is distractingly awful. We think the bugs, price tag, and bad translation will turn off a lot of buyers (justly so). However, if the devs address these issues (fast), it will be worth the price tag.

This game is a ton of fun. But bugs cause it to crash frequently during campaign missions (I’ve tried doing a hard reset to resolve the issue). At a price of $15, I’d expect for this to be a bit more polished. Maybe when these bugs are ironed out we’ll revise our rating higher.

How do these things get through QA? Screen is upside down and won’t rotate!!

A lot of potential, great implementation of the board game and looks great too on an iPad. But buggy, information gets overlaid in such a way that it obscures info that you need (there is a 4-digit counter on top of everything, including a help pop-up that refers to an icon and explanation or something, but it’s unreadable. Sometimes scrolling doesn’t work (but zooming does, which is pretty useless under the circumstances) And we can’t register a new account: no GameCenter support, we assume we need to register with Slitherine’s server?! When we try, it claims there is a username/password mismatch… Well duh, we’re only just trying to register our account, NOT trying to log in. And no explanation in the app description, in-game Wiki, or their website on how to make this work. So as a stand-alone game, it’s OK for now, but we’ll wait for Slitherine’s to fix & clarify this (expensive) work-in-progress before giving it a better score.

Make sure you check the forums as this game is not supported on numerous we pads. Even though the description only mentions we phone 4 Looks like they have updated the requirements. To bad a lot of us already purchased it not knowing.

We waited over a year for this app, and all it does is crash Still waiting.

It blows that you can not play on mini iPad generation 1. First time we have ever ran across this. Did not check requirements bought it now can not play. Slitherenne needs to fix this. We play all kinds of games that are higher graphics more involved. Why why why? Do not make the mistake we did 15 dollars down the drain. We can play on our iPhone 6 but to hard to see text need to fix blow up capabilities so we can soon on everything to be able to play.

15 bucks and we can’t even get through the tutorial mission without it crashing every single time. Frustration frustration frustration. Was this not beta tested???

You are unable to buy content or create an account to play multiplayer. Plus screen pops overlap so you can’t access previous ones.

We figured a lot of the complaints were coming from people with older hardware….. Nope. Brand new iPad, still runs like garbage. We can’t get past the 2nd order…. Anywhere, before it locks up or force quits….. ANYWHERE!! How this buggy pile of garbage made it through any kind of QA absolutely eludes us. How Apple let this buggy garbage on to the App Store baffles us. In the decade+ we’ve been downloading apps, we’ve never felt like we got screwed. We do know. We want our money back(yeah right) and we’re calling you every heinous name you can think of right now.
