A Glimpse into Pente Live

Pente is a board game that is easy to learn, difficult to master. Compete with players all over the world on a 19×19 board. There is

  • turn-based play,
  • realtime (live) play,
  • play against 2 different computer players,
  • participate in tournaments,
  • play King of the Hill and earn a crown,
  • search the game database by position for the most popular or best move!

Gomoku: To win, place 5 (not more) of your stones in a straight continuous line (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally).

Pente is like Gomoku but you can win by getting more than 5 in a row.
In Pente you can capture stones by enclosing a pair of your opponent’s stones. For example, if the stones are like this XOO and you place your stone so it becomes XOOX, then your opponents’ stones are removed from the board, leaving X__X. You can also win at Pente by capturing 10 or more of your opponents stones. You can’t play into a capture.
Rated games have a "Tournament Rule". It restricts player 1’s second move so that player 1’s second move must be at least 3 intersections away from the center of the board.

Keryo-Pente is like Pente but you can also capture 3 stones in a row.

G-Pente restricts player 1’s second move, like the tournament rule. It additionally prohibits playing on the 4th and 5th intersections away from the center of the board that are one the same horizontal or vertical line as player 1’s first move. (These are the most common 2nd moves for white).

D-Pente: Player 1 places 2 white and 2 black stones as a first move. Then player 2 decides to continue playing as player 2, or decides to swap seats and take over as player 1! Afterwards, play continues like regular Pente.

Poof-Pente: The main difference is that you can play into a capture! (e.g., from XO_X player plays XOOX) then the stones are "poofed" (removed from the board and counted as captures). Normal captures are still allowed and the number of captures to win remains at 10 stones. Up to 5 stones could be poofed in one move! Also note that my current implementation performs the following actions in sequence after a move:
Check if move captured any opponents stones, if so remove stones from the board.
Check if move creates a poof position, if so remove stones from the board.
Check if player has a 5-in-a-row, if so the player wins.
A player could capture and be poofed in the same move and the capture count could end up as 10-10. The game keeps going until one player has an advantage (i.e., gets more captured stones or gets five-in-a-row). There are no draws.

Boat-Pente differs in the end game. Once a Pente is made (5 stones in a row), the game continues as long as the opponent is able to capture across the Pente! Capturing 5 pairs is still a win like in Pente and the tournament rule is used for rated games.

Connect6: The goal is to be the first player to get 6 pieces in a row, either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Player one plays one stone at the center of the board. After that each player gets to place two stones on the board at a time.

DK-Pente is a combination of D-Pente with Keryo-Pente rules.

O-Pente combines the rules of Keryo, Poof, and Boat Pente

Go is also available on 3 different board sizes: 19×19, 13×13, and 9×9.

Swap2-Pente is Pente with Swap2 rules.

Excellent platform – players are polite – highly recommend this game for players of all levels – admin is helpful when needed – we play this game a lot.

We really like this game and appreciate the face that we can play against others. But there is some needed changes as the following: -The AI board acts very fast, the response time would be much smoother and fun if it was slowed. -The user interface can be developed more. Besides that, very good work !

The title says it best, we are running on an iPad and it is in portrait mode. Otherwise, the game runs well. We have a keyboard attached and only use the iPad in landscape mode. So, we were pretty surprised when we open this app and it didnt spin. Maybe there is an option somewhere we missed??

We love pente. We’ve played it since we were five and we were so excited to find this app, and its really great! Our only problem is that every AI game we’ve played we havent stood a chance. Live is great, love it. But the AI.. Honestly we respect it, but even on level 1? Ill stick to playing live. If youre a beginner and just learning the game dont use the AI. You wont really learn and youll just rage quit. Ill keep trying to beat it, but Im not holding out hope lol.

We hate when you sign up and the first thing you get is questioned if you are enjoying the Live Play. You automatically get a 1 star for asking stupid questions.

Changes our last location, freezes, bumps us out of a game.

PenteLive is enjoyable with our good institutional WiFi connection. We dont have internet. No more email. Apple ID is kaput without password? ! ?? Best wishes and hopes for 2021. PenteLive is good.

This game cheats and makes it not fun :( we love this game in board game format and was so excited to see an online app. However, when playing the computer, it seems rigged to win & purposefully goes super fast that you cannot see the move the computer makes (other than where it landed with your pieces mysteriously captured) There have even been times when captures took place that werent possible but our pieces get moved by the computer (as another rater stated). We watched diligently for this and it happened frequently. If you can slow down the computer so the player can watch the move in real time (like other games allow) & fix the cheating glitch the game would be enjoyable; otherwise, who wants to play a game you can never win?

We love Pente, and this game is a good challenge with the computer players. We have not tried the online (Live) feature. We recommend this game if you ever played Pente in the 1980s. We think will enjoy it. Our only complaint is that there is no way to take back an errant move. Occasionally, our piece is played at the wrong location due to our finger being too large for the small screen. If it had a take move back feature we would give it 5 stars. UPDATE: Thanks for the response below. Now that we know the take back move feature exists we give it 5 stars!

Played the AI and it consistently changed our placement when our move jeopardized its position, and replaced our pieces with its own. At first we thought we mis-placed our pieces, so we became extremely careful to ensure where we lifted our finger from the screen… But even then we counted 23 cheats in a row which ONLY happened when our placement blocked the AI. The last one the AI had 4 in a row, so of course we blocked… It then moved our piece to position 6 and replaced our piece with its own for the win. Im done.

Game is nearly unplayable with the current ui, far too easy to make mistakes without a chance to confirm or change your placement.

Glad to have a platform to play penteLive. All skill levels!

PenteLive is a solid app: you get all the basics (for free!). Want to play against AI? Youve got it. Against someone of any rank? Sure. Tournaments? No problem. Notifications if you want them? Yup. An occasional app-freeze may be expected, but it never compromises a move or a score. The graphics are simple, without the sheen & effect of some other (lesser) pente/go apps. But if you want dedicated opponents, & accurate score-keeping, as well as a variety of rules/gameplay, this is the app for you. Unfortunately, you can not rotate the game board or view it from various angles/depth.

Game is great, AI is mostly pretty strong but you can manipulate it a bit. Worst part of this app is the, IMO, very poorly designed UI.

We live this game and this app is very user friendly.

Since we bought an original Pente game board we love to play and learn on the app. The only short fall is that the AI moves are immediate and can be hard to see exactly what has happened from a learning standpoint, as well as the AI piece randomly not showing its piece or only showing the red indicator dot. Other that that we have no issues.

App keeps crashing intermittently. Also, the AI is so slow that it is almost unusable.

Crashes after every game. Why bother.

Pente lovers unite! This app is terrific. Check out the connected website, too. Beautifully done, simple and elegant interface.

It looks like a good app but it shuts down every time we try to start a game. Please fix!

You have to create Yet Another Useless Account, if you only want to play against the computer offline. Pretty annoying.

We have been using this app for years! We have played about 3000 recorded games :-). The team continues to add new features to the app. One of favorite is being able to search the archive of finished games. Just set out a few stones and hit search and the board will show in color-coded format the best and worse moves based on all prior games. This is a great way to study up. You also can filter this process in many ways, by players, by winner, etc. Our next favorite feature is that in live games you can swipe to dynamically rewind the prior moves and watch how the game has developed. Then just place your piece and the board snaps right back to its current state. Lastly, it has a great community of players! There are 20 or more plays the we know well through our chats and strategy discussions during and after games. There are many other features we like but download the app and give it a spin. In closing, once you know you like the games (Pente and its various versions and recently added Go) it is worth it to pay the small price for ad free games. Hope to see you soon!

Now there’s finally a way to play Pente from an iOS device with friends at our favorite Pente site . . . Pente. Org. Thanks for getting this started! Looking forward to future updates. There are other 5 in a row iOS apps out there with more functionality, but none yet that let you play on Pente. Org.
