A Glimpse into Real Chess

Game Center chess game.

Chess is a two-player board game played on a chessboard, a square checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. It is one of the world’s most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide at home, in clubs, online, by correspondence, and in tournaments.

Each player begins the game with sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each of the six piece types moves differently. Pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent’s pieces, with the object of the game being to ‘checkmate’ the opponent’s king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. In addition to checkmate, the game can be won by the voluntary resignation of one’s opponent, which typically occurs when too much material is lost, or if checkmate appears unavoidable. A game may also result in a draw in several ways, where neither player wins. The course of the game is divided into three phases: opening, middlegame and endgame.

We’re play’n against myself for cry n out loud.

Not bad. It does what it says and it’s free, so for us it’s OK.

We failed to see any single-player mode for this game. The graphics are fair, but Inwouldn’t bother to play a game against myself. Don’t get this unless you’re strategising a new play and you want to test all possibilities. This app isn’t worth the space.

Any chess program that uses game center to match up players is a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME!!!! The wait time is always over 2 minutes. We want to play NOW! Not wait and wait and wait. Game center is one of apples failures. It is what it is.

You can only use it to play against another person you are sitting with.. There’s no option to play against the computer.

At the moment it crashes, server is slow, few players are on, and the board looks like something from 1995. Compare the whole thing with the InstantChess app and you’ll see how much milage is left to cover before this is a half-decent app. But hey, its free.
