The app has many very good features. Their computer chess boards that can use it are highly questionable purchases. Our new SWAP chess computer board that moves its own pieces operated ONLY TWO GAMES BEFORE FAILING.
We have long wondered if this App and board were worth the money. Longevity is still to be seen, but on first impressions, this is some of the most magical experience Ive ever had with an electronic device. Any money Ive spent at the current moment feels completely worth it.

We have not been able to update our app to sync with the board.
We have had the Grand Kingdom chess set for several years. It has been working perfectly. Lately we had a software glitch. We emailed support and they contacted us and resolved the issue very quickly. We were impressed with their knowledge and response.
This is one of the best chess apps out there ! We really enjoy all the cool features and the cool part is its connected to the square off chess board we received , The board itself is also amazing ! Its so cool it moves on its own and you can play with other people and AI! We highly recommend it to everyone.

This app is great integration of all the current chess platforms. When paired with the square off board, you can challenge other users, bots, and other player via lichess.org or chess.com.
Its interesting. But, clarification, stream games doesnt mean stream our own games from Lichess. We want to play games with both players (us and our friend) onto the board. Thats not possible (yet) Thanks for clarified information tech support.
Unfortunately, very clunky interface.
Loving grand kingdom and playing chess all over the world. Problem: the clock continues to count down our time while the board moves the pieces for the other player. This adds up quickly in a rapid game and gives the other player the advantage. This does not happen when playing a rapid game against the AI. Please fix this. Updated to add: There is no way to cancel the app. It is very glitchy. Followed directions to cancel. It is not an option. Sent customer service emails. No response. Will be contacting our bank unless we hear from you.
We love our grand kingdom set. Its been going on strong for 5 years. The app, however has a big concern from us. Our son has an account to learn chess and play with the board. He is getting inappropriate messages that say Hi. Luckily, he cannot open them! However, there are no options to block or delete them! There should be a way to deactivate messaging in the app, but there is not. Also, as a side note, we wish there were a way to use the app (he has a Plus account) with a pass and play feature to play chess with someone next to you without the board. Seems like an easy thing to do and overlooked by the developers.
We have the square off swap which although inconsistent in speed and very cheap feeling works fine if the app decides to actually work. The app is just terrible almost every single game we start we get kicked from the app and abandon the game even when streaming (which is the main reason we bought this) we cant finish a single game. The crashes would at least be almost manageable if you could continue the game after it crashes but you cant as soon as you get back into the app you have to restart. Stepping away from the bugs the UI itself isnt great and we find it unfortunate that you are restricted to their app and cant use chess.com or lichess apps (you can still play games thru those accounts but it goes thru the square off app). Again with the streaming the games are just in a list with no search or filters and you cant stream past games u less they are in the last day and you can control the stream itself its just goes at a constant unchanging speed with no pause or slow and any control at all. Cmon these bugs make the board and app unusable and even if there are no bugs the lack of very necessary normal functions makes it a terrible app. Please fix this stuff as soon as possible and maybe we wont throw our chess board into a fire.
We think this is a great chess board. It is very fun and enjoyable. It is worth the money.
This game and app is worth the money and a great Christmas gift.
Bought this board back in February, played for a month or so while we were really into chess then we got busy with college and it fell off. Now our fall semester is ending and im getting into chess again, and we love the new user interface, lot less, dated/experimental then the UI we used a few months ago. Love the streamlined look of everything. Sad that about yet another subscription based company, but we guess that's how it gonna be for the foreseeable future.
Having several probablems with board working correctly. Was fun when it worked.
We love the Square Off Pro; squares are accurate, recognition is quick, and we have read how far the app has gone. We would have hoped massive battery drain for this app is more efficient. In the meantime, we give the app a 3 when compared to other apps that use very little battery life and do not heat our phones.
With the latest update this game is what we were expensive, finally.
The latest update has rendered our board inoperable. This product is a nice idea but both the hardware (cheap light pieces and an electronic rollable board that doesnt last) and the software (requires multiple apps if you want to do analysis! Has ads despite you already purchasing a $200+ board! Neither app is user-friendly! Undo feature causes games to abort!) are fails. Now thanks to the latest update the board will not recognize any piece placement. It is literally unusable. Hopefully they rectify the situation but we can not in good conscience recommend something that literally doesnt work, and its only been two months.
The updated app has a lot of bugs in it. When playing online, the opponent is not getting the moves, pieces are not resetting to their correct position when resetting the chess pieces. Not sure why the app was updated. Has been nothing but a headache.
We successfully connect to the board on our android device, but our IOS ipad and iphone devices do not successfully communicate with the board. All devices pair to the board within the app, but the IOS devices fail to start games and repeatedly give an error to check the pieces. Without moving the pieces, the android version successfully launches matches and functions as expected. We are not sure why the board connects but does not properly start a match on IOS. Seems like a bug introduced in recent updates.

If you have any questions about the product before or after purchase this company will be on top of it. The board is of serious quality. We were hesitant to spend the money, but couldnt pass it up when there was a little sale. We have 3 people in our chess club that have one now. It is useful when there isnt a game open for people near their rating. They can play a game near their level on the SquareOff board then get analysis from higher rated players. We dont care for the engine format that is used if we had to pick a downside. You can tether your accounts to chess dot com or lichess dot com and use the engine you prefer with little to no hassle. It is also a neat talking piece for chess lovers.
When they auto-resign, we somehow get aborted from the match and end up losing elo.
Pretty good but UI lacks a little.
Its something wrong with the web site where as if we cant login to be connected to the online players, but the artificial intelligence of this board is decent they mos definitely advanced our game to a more better player wit in the first 2 Weeks all in all we give it a big 4 stars.
Wouldnt let us make several moves.
The Pro set is really amazing! Our first set was Grand Kingdom and we were thrilled with how well it performed now this is something that we can take along while waiting for the wife and daughters to finish shopping. The pieces are a good size and weight perfect for anyone with mobility issues or younger ones just learning.
Hello, Great app with nice features! The only reason we didnt give a 5 star rating is because Im not able to input our moves from the app. Would be great to be able to do!!! The reason is if you are away from the board and its your turn to play, you can input your moves from the app.
Good and fun but some tech errors.
The AI was good, but the difficulty has been increased which takes some of the fun away. We have been only playing chess for several years and learn more with each game. Which was enjoyable until now. Now the games seem to be unnecessarily tough which is counterproductive to someone learning Im on level 2 and it shouldnt be as hard as it is . The AI now doesnt make mistakes like people do playing. Really takes away from the gameplay.
Bad app, many bugs, very unstable, no customer service available.
Itd be nice if some focus was put into making the app work reliably rather than using it as a web store for accessories.
Level 2 is impossible!!! It is a pitty we have this expensive chess board and our kids can not play it.
The boards arent getting firmware updates. Several bugs continue to exist. The app has a terrible UI. Why doesnt the developer take a look at chess.coms mobile app and then say: geez, we really need to do a better job with the user interface we have not been able to successfully get chess.com integration to work once.
The app is great but our problem is when playing the game the other person taking a very long time its been a month now and still no move was made also theres no way we could communicate with the person while playing the game to let him or her know to make a move so does that mean we won the game or do we have to wait for this person to make a move we would love to play with other people instead of waiting on this one person and we dont want to quit or resign because this person about to lose or decided to stop playing for some reason.
The Neo plays fairly well when playing the AI, but there is a glitch. The problem is that the timer does start until the third move. Also, often the board freezes and no moves are performed after the second move. Sometimes you get to play a whole game and sometimes you only get two moves and the board will freeze up and you have to restart the game.
We have everything set up, lock screw removed, plugged directly into power source, pieces in their correct positions When Im in the app trying to connect the board, it says No Grand kingdom set found when the board is not turned on, it says No device available and continues searching How can it notice our board is there and trying to connect, but wont recognize it for what it is? Also the support team for this is kind of embarrassing. They are not AI supposedly, but they have very limited responses and act as if they are AI. Not helpful at all.
We received the board for our birthday. Never heard of it before. We set it up and started playing immediately! It is spooky good.
Im enjoying using this application. With the help of the Square pro the movements are tracked near perfection. Our only concern that would take this review to 5 stars would be the option to track and save games that we have played with someone else in person, and the ability to share that analysis with each other.
Update: After weeks we got a dev response. Of course its a canned response to contact them with our issues. Guess what? We did, even before we posted the review. They dont get back to you. Ever. Its a complete joke; all theyd have to do is use some decently leveled ai, or allow play against chess.com or lichess bots. But, alas, no. Our recommendation? Buy a chessnut air board. So much better. True, the pieces dont move themselves, lights show you where to move for the opponent. But, the board works, you dont need to press down on it, and most importantly, the app actually does what the developer promised. This company will take your money and then nothing. They dont care. DO NOT BUY THIS BOARD! There are much better alternatives. Original review: Tl;dr: dont buy if you plan on playing the ai. Like, at all, unless you love losing or are a loooooooot better than us. The board is pretty nice. It sounds like gears about to break when pieces move, but thats ok. What isnt ok is the app is not holding the products promises. – ai levels are broken. Levels 1-3 play like a brain dead dog. Level 4 is near unbeatable for us. – adaptive ai isnt doing anything. It does not adapt. We just played 15 games straight, and the ai does not change, and the level the app claims it played at also doesnt change. – developers do not respond to anything. – cant play other ai, chess.com or lichess, cant be done. – spotty connection even when playing with people.
We are very frustrated because we cannot get the board to work. Its fully charged and turns on but the pieces do not light up orMake any sounds when moved. We would like a phone number to be able to speak to somebody regarding this.

Chess cheating we played someone his time was -3hr and the time was hit 0sec thin his clock start.
We have had Excalibur and Excalibur 2 since 1980s, nothing matches Square Off, this machine is well put together so far! The packaging was impeachable, we felt all that 2 years waiting was well worth it just by unpacking it and so far we love it and recommend it to all who play chess.
