A Glimpse into 1000 Miles

1000 Miles is based on a French card game. It is simple to learn and play, even for children, and is very addictive. You need to think ahead and watch your opponent’s moves to maximise your score though.

The premise of the game is that you are in a car race. Each hand is either 700 or 1000 miles long, with the first player to reach 700 miles having the option to extend the race to 1000 miles.

The game uses a special deck of cards which includes distance, hazard, remedy and safety cards. Hazards are played to slow or stop your opponent’s progress. Remedies are played to remove hazards applied by your opponent and safeties are used to prevent hazards.

The best of the MB game clones that we’ve found for IOS devices. Id only change the card faces and backs to the older, more traditional designs. (Ive been playing MB for five decades.) However, very fluid at quick gameplayI only ever play single player-vs.-computer. Upgraded for a buck, in order to have the option to extend games from 700 miles to 1,000 miles.

This is a great ! Game ! Very well done and spot on to the card game. We remember playing this game years ago, we recently bought it again, after reading the rules, a couple of times over, we learned that the discard pile is just that , a Discard pile ! The complaint others had about not being able to draw from it, isnt possible in the card game maybe in some house rules but not in the printed ones. The other comment about having to get to exactly 700 or 1000 is also in the original rules ! Yes its that exact math! Again, maybe in house rules The complaint about needing to play a green light after clearing the problem played on you.. Yes ! Another green light is necessary as per the rules ! Once again, house rules we suspect to make it easier for younger players. There is a bonus score for completing the trip after all the cards have been played. So, reshuffling isnt possible either. This is a great digital version of that card game ! Well Done !

This is a great version of the game. There are small bugs here and there, not enough to down the review. Like once in awhile we have to go back to lobby to see its our turn in multiplayer. Otherwise been playing for years now. We just with they would allow more than 2 players in multiplayer.

Excellent free game. Plays just like the original. The computer opponent is a worthy adversary! Definitely will sharpen your game skills for playing the manual version.

Read the previous reviews and it appears that most of the bugs referenced earlier have been addressed. We’ve played around 150 games against the computer and regularly get Safety Cards, Coup Fourres, etc., but we have noticed a couple of things. Theyre relatively minor but irritating: #1 – Around 90% of the time the computer starts out immediately with a Go/Roll card. #2 – The computer gets the Right of Way (most important card in the deck) around 60-70% of the time, and #3 – Most of the time the computer has an immediate Remedy card after we play a Hazard card. We still win probably 80% of the games so its not like the computer is obviously cheating, so Ill recommend this game as we do enjoy playing it two or three quick games when Im bored.

Works fine on our iPad 8. The computer opponent doesn’t play to take advantage of the extra points for Delayed Action when deck is low. It’s too easy to accidentally discard a card you want to keep if you’re stopped. Wish the "Coup Fourree" pop up would disappear on its own.

The current version does fix some issues, but there is still at least one obvious bug, as mentioned by another reviewer: when you play a Safety card in single-player mode, there should be an automatic Go, i.e., the top card should turn into a green light. Currently it seems to do that only when youve scored a coup fourr, and we’ve accidentally discarded miles cards b/c it was waiting for a Go. Also, it would be helpful if there were some indication of the number of 200-mile cards that have been played; we havent seen any. (On an iPhone screen there clearly isnt enough room to display all the mileage & Safety cards that youve played, but a small 200-mi. Counter could be squeezed in.) And although double-tapping generally simplifies and speeds up play, we’ve gotten into the habit of double-tapping cards we wish to discard, which works fine when the card is unplayable (i.e., most of the time) but we sometimes accidentally play a card we meant to discard. There doesnt seem to be an obvious way for the program to know the players intent; perhaps another gesture could be added that always means discard. (Desktop implementations of the game have the luxury of a second mouse button for that purpose.)

This seems to be a lot more true to the original rules of Milles Borne than the official app is. But there are 2 problems that keep this from being perfect: 1: the discard pile is too close for the distance pile. Way too easy to discard a distance card you want to play. 2: The use of Coup Fourre is not quite right. This game lets you do a Coup Fourre after you draw a card, and even allows you to use the card you draw at the start of your turn as a Coup Fourre. This is incorrect. To do a Coup Fourre, you need to use a card already in your hand to counter your opponent. To be clear, it had to be one of the six cards in your hand. If you draw a safety card, making it your seventh card, you can play it, but it should NOT count as a Coup Fourre in scoring. As we said, its almost perfect.

We always play the one-player game. The other player gets a tremendous amount of speed limit cards. We have to hold on to at least 3 end of limit cards per hand, or we will be stuck every time. And, we rarely get an end of limit card. Plus, on the rare occasions that we get multiple red lights, the other player just so happens to have enough green lights. If we get too far ahead of the other player, they will suddenly get 3-4 safety cards all in a row. The game is fun, just wish it were more random.

This is not a bad version of Millebournes but we wish the developer would fix some obvious bugs in the single player mode. 1. When you play a Safety card, the top card should change to a Green light card. It doesnt. This makes it difficult to see if the opponent (or yourself) can play a card. This is a glaring bug that should have been corrected years ago. 2. Many times, we’ve received a Hazard card and played a Hazard on the opponent then played a Safety card and got bonus credit for playing the Safety card. To get the bonus, you must play the Safety card immediately after being hit with a Hazard. 3. AI needs improvement. The opponent will continue past 700 without the points to make it to 1000. Why extend if you get more points by ending the round? Plays Hazards when its obvious this late in the game we have Safety cards. Not a smart move. This game needs some attention.

Every game, and we mean every game turns into a flip-flip-flip contest. Get a lead on the computer opponent and watch the cards the computer player gets to lay on you. Also, with the iPhone 11 not having the attention button, we cant find a way to exit the game without restarting the phone. The game needs to add a swipe-up exit mechanism.

Great game but multiplayer Game Center mode says to both players that it is the other persons turn. If we purchased as a single player game we would give 4 stars – gameplay is great but the graphics are okay.

Game is nice, but needs IMPROVEMENTS. You should be able to draw off the discard stack like in the real card game. Once youre out of cards it doesnt reshuffle the discard stack the game is just DONE. You have to get EXACTLY 700 or 1000 – no cards to put you over that number- which we guess isnt a huge issue but the actual game doesnt require such strict math. In the true game the green light isnt needed each time after each obstacle; once its fixed youre back on the road. Seems like an unnecessary extra step, especially when they are so rigid with the cards, dont reshuffle and you cant pull from the discard stack. In multiplayer mode there needs to be an opponent TURN TIMER; we’ve gone into so many games with randomly matched opponents and they take 30 minutes to HOURS to take their turn if at all and we end up forfeiting just to get out of the game. Otherwise the game is good, just wish these improvements were on the way to make it awesome.

The actual card game is great, with two or four players its really by chance what you draw and its evenly distributed. With AI, 90% of the time it starts off with a green light, we can draw 8 to 10 times before we even see a go card, by then its accumulated hazard cards so when a green card comes up Bam we get hit with that and then long draws before we get a remedy card and another go card. Meanwhile it throws down the 200s that it seems to always get, we can play 10 games before we actually see a 200 mile card, and when we need mileage cards theyre always 25 and 50 while AI is always getting the 200,100. When we do get some high mileage cards we always have a speed limit thrown on and we can never come across a remedy and we get six cards of mileage cards above 75 that we cannot do anything with. We have deleted it several times and rebooted it to see if things would even out. So we have evened it out by deleting it for good Im just not having fun.

We love Mille Bourne so we were happy to download this. But far too frequently, a distance card that we try to play goes to the discard pile. At first, we would double-tap the card and instead of going to the distance pile, it would go to the discard pile. So, we changed to drag the card to where we wanted to play, but it would go to the discard pile anyway. We’ve deleted this game. Also, the hands are rarely evenly matched. One player trounces the other in most hands. That wasnt really fun either.

The algorithm of this game is off. We are a very good player and have played different versions of this game. The computer player gets all of the green light cards one hand and we get none, or vice versa, or all of the red light cards, or all of the flat tire cards, etc. There are not enough end speed limit cards in the deck, that’s for sure! Extremely frustrating to play, something is just off. We don’t know if it’s the card distribution or what, but going ten discards without a single mileage card but getting ten green light cards in a row is just off.

We have had gas tanks in our hand when an out of gas was played on our without any change. Also we had right of way in our hand when a speed limit was played on us again no change. Disappointing!

This game is addicting but the discard pile seems to have no reason to it, when youre taking new cards some of them just go to the discard pile even when you have an open slot, and many times its the exact card you need to overcome a hazard card. So then you just sit. We just played a game where the one card we needed randomly went to the discard pile FOUR times, even though we had an open slot. And then the hand ends because the cards have run out and it doesnt shuffle and let the game continue. We have looked through the rules thoroughly and there is no explanation for this! Also the Right of Way card goes to the AI player way more often.

In the original game, you are allowed to draw either from the draw pile OR the discard pile. Would give a better review if the rules were the same.

We’ve played this game for years so we know how to play it pretty well. When playing against the AI, we have lost EVERY hand so far, and we’ve play over two dozen. When youre stopped, you dont get any cards you need to get going again. The AI gets minimum two safety cards a hand and several times got all four. The AI gets higher mileage cards including 200, 100, and 75 while we were getting 50s and 25s, which we couldnt use as we were frequently blocked with hazards we couldnt resolve. The game is not worth wasting your time.

Its become rare to win a hand, much less a game. Pretty much every hand is the AI hitting us with hazard after hazard, and anytime we respond, the AI gets a Coup Fourr. We havent won a single game in a week. Maybe thats one upside to the stay-at-home rules. We can delete this horrible app and play the real thing.

Over the last few weeks when we played with our brother, the random card shuffler almost always tilted the cards toward him. He was the game inviter. He almost always got the cards he needed to win while we struggled to get a green light or safety card.

And the real game. If there is a pattern, then card distribution is not random. Gameplay issues aside, the drawing of hazards, safeties, and early draw of Go cards by the computer is unfair.

Out of 100 games, we won maybe 30. Most games, the computer received a minimum of 2, if not all 4 of the safety cards. Deleted.

Still not random drawing of cards. Computer still has obvious advantage which ruins the game. Rigged to give the computer the advantage.

This games cheats every single time Im all about some competition but when you have to play almost all discards something isnt right with the system Im not talking a game here or there but like 8 out of 10 hands you dont get a green light If this is how it is playing against the system why the heck would we challenge a human?!?!!!!! Kindly refund our money for buying this game.

If you win too much in single player mode, the game throws the game to the computer at layer. The cards in the deck are absolutely NOT random.

Excellent homage to Mille Bornes. Layout and sound are high quality. If only pass and play supported four players. This is worth more than the $0.99 asking price.

We enjoyed playing this game as a kid and we’re excited to see it in an app. For the reviews that say they deck does not shuffle at the end, that’s the point that’s how the game is played once the cards are gone they’re gone. They sound effects on this are pretty annoying even if they are appropriate. We’ve taken to playing it with the sound off. The main layout issue we have is the discard pile is right below your distance pile and we’ve lost more than one game accidentally putting our miles just short of their spot. Because of that issue we only play the free version, I’d get overly frustrated paying for a game that lets us inadvertently destroy myself.

  1. the player always gets the first card in single player es. This should either alternate between the player and AI every hand, or be random. It’s an unfair advantage to always get the first card. 2) there should be a scorecard showing number of games won and list by the player and the AI.

Love this app & play it constantly. However, there is a bug that manifests itself in scoring… Sometimes, the Right Of Way card will NOT coup fourr when played immediately after a hazard. This happens most often when the red light or speed limit hazard is played & the RoW is the next card drawn. However, it also happened once when a speed limit was played & the RoW was already in our hand.

Our uncle gave us his hand us down Mille Bourne game as a kid. Never understood the point system so we just played to 1000. The trick to beating the computer in this game on normal play is to never extend the game unless you are absolutely sure you can win.

We are having a lot of fun with this game. We dont know if you meant to but we sure do appreciate the fact that somehow you made this game accessible with voiceover. We are blind so accessibility is a big thing for us. We love being able to play this game with our boys. We did notice one thing however, the deck does not redeal its self when the cards are used up. Hoping this could be fixed in a future update. Also there are a couple of accessibility things that could use tweaking but overall we are finding it easy to play.

The computer player frequently takes two turns in a row. The game also locks up after the hand if you accidentally slide the screen partially back to the menu then return to the game.

Computer is programmed to win and get all the safety cards.

Multiplayer game a failure. Tried to play against son in multiplayer version. The game would consistently say it was the other players turn for each of us and neither of us could move. Sometimes we could refresh the game to get one more move, but would lock up again. Multiple refreshing ended up losing the saved game. Do not buy this if you plan on playing against family and friends over the internet.

Have to uninstall after every game, the sit through the tutorial.

This game has so many errors and they all benefit the game computer. DONT GRT THIS APP!

When playing single player game and extension (between 700 and 1000) on iPhone X, screen goes black and then we get home screen. When you restart game, you have to start over. Happened 3 times today.

We’ve read some of the other reviews, some of which point out valid "issues", but all we can say is that those issues are minor and have in no way hampered our enjoyment of the game. The card abilities, gameplay rules, and scoring are all authentic, and the sound effects add a nice touch.

Been playing this game since it was first issued and still loving it. It really deserves more favorable reviews and we thank the developers for the attention to detail. Great job….

It’s worth the dollar upgrade. Without it, you can only play single player and go for 700 miles. Our only complaint is that out of the 50 or so games we’ve played, the computer is the only one who can score a Coupe Forre. Excellent game! ***Revision: 6/17: we have now played over 300 games and still haven’t gotten a Coupe Fourre. The computer averages at least one a game, sometimes getting as many as three a game. This is against all statistics with a random game. However, it’s still the best version out there. We have bought them all. If we could get a random deck we would change our rating to 5 stars.

The more we play this, the more impressed we am! It’s a well-designed app with a solid interface that captures well the feel of the original card game. It also includes a very good explanation of how to play the game (although more is needed about what each special card does–e.g., Driving Ace and Right of Way); along with an interactive tutorial! Impressive! It works well on both the iPad and iPhone, although the text for # cards left and # of miles traveled should be larger! The developer has done a superb job with the app and it is great to see a version of the old Touring-Milles Borne card game freely available. We find this app far more playable and appealing than the alternatives–the Milles Borne app is pricey and features those weird contemporary cartoon characters, while MilesFE lacks the cars and its game play and operation are unfathomable! Still, there are several issues (5) that keep this out of the 5-star league (barely). 1. Desperately needs an Un-Do function! Auto play via double-tapping usually does what you want it to–but sometimes it discards a card (e.g., Speed Limit 50) rather than plays it on the opponent! Un-do would come in handy at those times. Also, if you aren’t careful, you’re liable to drop a mileage card on the discard pile rather than your distance pile! An Un-do is absolutely needed for such situations. 2. Automatically going to a new game may appeal to some, but many of us would rather make a decision–i.e., look at the score, then see a blank layout with a button to tap for a new game IF we decide we want to play another. Instead, the app deals the cards and launches a new game right away. Too pushy! 3. The animation of card drawing is ridiculously fast. The default should be more like a second. (Users can set it.). But, more than that, there needs to be a way of turning it off entirely! (We know cards are being drawn; we don’t need to see it every time.). We’re now using and liking the .7 second setting; it’s slow, calm, and shows what’s happening. Still, it’d be good to be able to turn off animation! 4. It would be helpful if it operated in portrait mode, too! 5. Once you buy the full version (in-app buy), the "Buy Full Version" option should vanish! SUGGESTION One suggestion– how about choice of cars? Of colors, of style? We really like the old fashioned ones the app uses, but maybe include some more modern ones, too. Who knows? Maybe the Big Three auto makers would give you some cash for featuring, say, the Mustang or the Cadillac? :-) Or, let us bring photos of our own cars in!! In any event, kudos for a nicely done job ! We sprung for the low-cost 99 cents upgrade as a compliment to your design and programming–getting the extension of races is gravy. It’s such a good feeling knowing that you’ve cut into our work productivity! ;-)

We’re a huge Mille Bournes fan, so when we found this app, we had to have it. There’s just a few bugs that can be frustrating. The worst one is when the speed limit is played on you and you have the Right of Way. Sometimes when you should get a Coup-Fourr for dropping the Right of Way on a speed limit, the game will not acknowledge it. The first time it happened, we thought we did something wrong. But now we’ve seen it happen a number of times. Would love to see this bug squashed.

A good game but it gets stuck in the score screen and we have to shut down the game and go back in. Please fix this.

We really like this game and this is fairly well done and the best iOS version. But the latest version introduced several bugs. Cards can be placed in the wrong piles and will glitch to be blank. And if you try to check the score sometimes it will go to a screen that you can’t get out of. These bugs are in multi player mode. But we do like the modal screen before each pass so that you can’t see opponent’s cards.

Overall the game plays well. Occasionally has a bug like other reviewers have stated that freezes on the score screen after a round that causes you to have to quit. Developers, please fix this. Also, multiplayer has not worked since we purchased the app today. If these two things were fixed we would be happier with it.

We enjoyed this computer game many years ago & was excited when we found a free app for our phone!! Like the different backgrounds too. Our problem is glitches. Sometimes, when viewing our score, the game won’t go back to start a new game. We have to either wait a few hours or delete/re download the game. Also, the score columns don’t always keep scores from previous games. It would also be nice to list in help or instructions what all the various cards are for. Fixing these problems would make the game rate 5 stars!

We too had problems where it wouldn’t let us play when we had the right of way card. It also ignored our safety card for accidents after an accident. We also had trouble getting the double click to work reliably. Still searching for a good Mille Bourne game.

The aesthetics of this app are above average. However, having played the actual Mille Bornes card game our entire life we can say that this app leaves much to be desired. The frequency to which particular cards come from the draw pile is in no way mathematically comparable to the actual card game. In example, we recently went three out of four rounds without a single go card/green-light. There are many more examples like this that have come up. Also, at the end of rounds the app glitches and has to be restarted. There is some entertainment to be had here; however, just don’t expect the app to be true to the actual Mille Bornes card game.
