User Reviews on Kakuro
Looking for more information? Read a comprehensive review of Kakuro below:
We love this version of Kakuro. Unfortunately, after upgrading to iOS8 last night, it is unusable. Had some minor problems with iOS7, but now the tools menu doesn’t work at all, which is where you select a new game. We hope they put an update out to support iOS8. If you haven’t upgraded to iOS8, we highly recommend this app! We’re not deleting so that it will update if an update is released.
Was very fun to start with, but now crashes when we try to load it. What’s up with that?
Of the kakuro apps we have played, this is the only one still one on our iPad. Pros: Addictive! The puzzles are well-generated and the solving tools are very useful. Cons: A full page ad shows up at the beginning of each game, but when you know where the close button is then who cares? It costs us perhaps half a second. Room for improvement: No substantial updates in a long time, and it runs as an iPhone app on our iPad. We would add persistence to the combinations helper, and auto-update the pencil marks. Storing stats in the cloud to combine scores from multiple devices would be nice, too. Summary: The ‘pros’ have it. The cons are completely irrelevant, and the only reason we’re taking off a point is — um — no good reason. We’ll leave it 5 stars.
We know this is an old game but we still enjoy playing it. Since we updated to iOS 8, the game won’t work at all. Any chance for a fix?
We didn’t think it was too bad until we completed half of the page and when we returned it was gone! We do like that it has the list of constant sets.
Doesn’t work. Game screen loads up. You put numbers in. No response, no confirmation of action. Broken. Needs update.
Was literally the most addicting app on our phone and well worth the money we spent and then they went and added the most annoying advertisements we’ve ever seen. ON A PAID APP! We will move on and get another kakuro app. Skip this one, it’s not worth your time.
Another app gone bad. Great you decided to make this app free but then you go and add ADS! What about those of us that paid for this?? That’s like a great big f you to your customers. Icon is not retina and neither are the buttons. Looks like trash. Stay clear of this garbage and this greedy developer. IT’S APPS LIKE THIS THAT MAKE ME HESITANT ON BUYING ANY APP FROM THE APP STORE.
We’re a long time user, and really appreciate what you did with this app. But we paid for it, and your "now totally free" update gives us the unpaid treatment. We now won’t use it on general principles. We also will be wary of any app produced by your studio. Thanks for treating your real customers with no respect – your actions will be remembered.
This is by far the best version and we have tried many! The layout and submenus are so user friendly. And for those of us who like playing at night before sleep it has the BEST dark mode, no more bright blinding background, that keeps you up! But a beautiful black background and dimmer lettering mode! To give a full review, there is one submenu where the sliders at the bottom are still messed up, but now that we know they actually DO read the reviews we are confident they will look into that too! Update: The developers got back to us and gave us back our paid version! Old review:Used to be the best, USED TO Now, even though we bought it way back when, it wants us to pay to upgrade so we can play the more difficult levels. We already paid. We will not pay again! We would rather find another to pay for than put up with that kind of deceit.
The previous update to this game has turned what was the best kakuro app for almost a decade into a borderline unplayable mess. And the latest update takes away features while changing nothing else. First, the new color scheme and flat look is hideously ugly. Its also less usablea touch interface with tons of fiddly little buttons crammed onto the screen really needs visible borders. (Imagine the iPhone keyboard without the white squares around the keys.) Second, theres now a banner ad on the bottom, right where you want to click to unselect the current selection. For a game that we paid for (even if the paid version was merged with the free version a few years ago), this is especially unacceptable. Third, it now randomly pops up intrusive ads. Worst of all, it keeps trying to get us to pay for a Pro upgrade. (I have no idea whats included in Pro, but whatever it is, we havent needed it for the past decade.) It sometimes even spontaneously triggers a payment confirmation that we have to cancel. Presumably the interface tricked us into clicking a Upgrade button that appears under our finger when Im trying to click something else, or something like that. But however theyre doing it, its not just seriously unethical, and annoying, but also a serious violation of Apples rules. So, what improvements do we get to compensate for all these downgrades? Not a single one of the features people had requested over the past decade (like an easier way to mark the board and rewind to an earlier mark) has been added. They did finally fix the bug where, on any screen bigger than an iPhone 4, theres a dead space on the top and bottom that can crash the game if you accidentally click it. But because they filled that dead space with a banner ad that pops open an ad page in Safari if you accidentally click it, this isnt really an improvement. We wish we could go back to the previous version. A new version came out at some point, and we upgraded hoping it would solve some of the problems. But Ill never find out, because it disabled enough features that its not worth even trying. You cant even start a game above medium difficulty anymore. So now, its gone from a game we pick up every once in a while when Im not too annoyed to deal with the frustrations to one that we will never even think about playing. Nice job ruining it for good.
One of the best apps out there for this game, thank you.
Every other button we pushed took us to an ad. Not a bad layout. Not intuitive.

Terrible app. We downloaded, and could not even see what we were doing. Just saw numbers on a black screen and big ads at the bottom. Not user friendly at all.
It used to work and now it wont load so we cant play anymore.
We used to use this app pretty often, and we were really good at it. We purchased it when it was new in 2009. The latest update added ads, the option to update to pro; which we would assume is ad-free, but does nothing. So instead Im forced to watch ads that we cant click out of and mess with our timing on the app. Then theres the lack of responsiveness on the app. It went from a fully functioning touch screen to smaller buttons and slow responses. For instance, when clicking a number triangle you see the options but you cant click the done button because they decreased the size of clickable area and get stuck clicking it a few times until released. We used to enjoy this app but we wont use it again until they fix this terrible update.
Actually hate them for updating this… Was in our opinion one of the best kakuro games before via layout and design. Now the buttons are harder to hit, cant visually see which are hit or not unless you strain your eyes, the timer isnt working properly now either. So trying to improve to beat our time on master difficulty is basically null and void until they fix it. Also now the only way to not have the apparently 6 second win time on the difficulty is to reset our statistics beating the whole point of trying to improve our record…
The # buttons are too small (especially the 1 & 9), so you easily hit the wrong # out miss the #s which takes you to different field. We wish we never upgraded this or paid for the upgrade.
Works fine for us on iPad mini 2, iOS 8.1.
Since 2 updates ago, this app doesn’t work. We paid for something that doesn’t work and that it has advertising. Awful.
No longer works in in iOS7 since the last update. Used to be great, now it’s just wasting space. Hope it gets fixed soon.
Just exits when we try to open a puzzle. Please fix!!
Love this game. Only complaints are: 1) we sometimes accidentally tap the row/column numbers rather than the game board which disqualifies that game from eating us points. Maybe there could be a way to disable all hints? 2) when looking at the reference guide for combinations it’s sometimes frustrating to use the upper slider because it is super sensitive. Maybe include a type-in option?
Grate game. It had a few bugs, but they seemed to have fixed them. PLEASE MAKE AN iPAD VERSION!
Fun game to play when you’re bored.
Good standards on games. Liked it very much on quality!
This game is awesome. Great price, great gameplay.
The boards are limited in size. They are smaller than puzzle book kakuros which is where we started. The tools are great and gameplay, scorekeeping, and the options are really good. Awesome game for beginner or intermediate kakuro players but perhaps a bit small for more experienced players. Still a good buy.
Can’t figure out why the only board size in master level is 8×8. We’ve beat over 100 games in very hard and 48 in master. Maybe we need to hit 200 in each before they will unlock. Also our rating hasn’t moved from ‘6’ in almost a year. Yet we’ve beat about 125 games at least in the past year, avg of 16,000 per game.
Don’t waste your time and money on this app. It’s not optimized for retina display so therefore it’s extremely blurry. It’s 2012 FFS, app developers need to optimize their apps for retina display. The only way they’re going to stop being lazy and do this is if people STOP BUYING apps that aren’t optimized.
We enjoy cross sums and thought this app looked promising for the price. It’s nice when it works, but seems unstable with random crashes (iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.1) which occasionally cause loss of work.
The app looks good and overall, it’s a good concept for the money, but the UI is slow to respond and after a game or two, the app starts to crash. Eventually you cannot recover and end up having to reload it (losing all of your progress). We have gotten so frustrated with it that we’re beginning to look at other apps. Hopefully, the developers will improve in later versions. Too bad you can’t get refunds.
As many of the other reviews have said, this app crashes a lot. It started when iOS4 came out, and the release that supposedly "fixed" the app for iOS4 crashed a lot and the UI is really slow to respond. We haven’t yet tried other Kakuro apps to recommend a better choice, but we’re downloading a couple now. If you can deal with the slow UI (it’s sometimes a whole second between when you touch the screen and the corresponding action), there is a way to get around the crashes: Basically the game crashes at the end of any game if the app has gone into background mode any time during the game. So, if you have to background the game, before going back to the app double-click the home button to get at the task manager, then hold on the kakuro app until the minus sign appears, and click it to delete the running instance. The next time you open it, you will have lost your history, but it will also not crash if you get the end of the game. We’re rating this low for app brokenness and lack of responsiveness by the developer. If they cared, this game would be fixed by now. But we still play it, so we can’t in good conscience give it only one star.
5 stars for game play, layout etc. Negative 1 star for constant crashing. Usually crashes every 4-5 plays, often right at the last move. Eventually won’t even start, so we have to delete and re-download. We have been up in the millions in total points at least 10 times only to have to restart at zero. Latest version 2.50 no different.
It crashes shortly after loading the splash screen. Bug reports to the app maker go unanswered. 2 updates to the app have not solved the issue. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. This app is a lemon.
Would be a great game but crashing incessantly is very annoying!
Plays great for a while. If you leave the game, don’t expect it to work upon your return. Now it crashes as it loads the app :(
Current version of the game is unplayable. It’s had these problems before but not as frequently. When it works, it’s great, but we can’t recommend this at all until some critical fixes are made.
Karuko arrives to the iPhone with a clean easy to use user interface. Packed with features ranging from possible combinations to unlimited undos or skins. Generates puzzles instantaneously with six level of difficulty and five different sizes. A Kakuro’s fan dream. Plus the developer is open to your suggestions, give it a try and contact them.
Good value for the $$. It teaches you how to play the game and sharpens your adding skills. If you are having troubles, it offers you a variety of options to help you get hints. It’s also a good educational game to teach kids how to add or to practice their adding skills. Great job!
We love playing it because it’s simple but so addicting!!!
Terrible interface. We still get confused and frequently miss hit something. Plus it often crashes… Especially just when you make the final move. Worth the buck but no more.
