Community Insight:
This is a more perfect love letter to Adventure than even Ready Player One. As someone who found the original wizards ring and the worlds first video game Easter egg via whispernet back before the internet was a thing, Im absolutely delighted to find this gem and wholeheartedly recommend it. It wont pull at the heart strings of younger gamers in quite the same way, but its fun enough and an awesome tribute to yesteryear that we suspect they could also really enjoy it.
This game captures the original perfectly. Only way better. The levels are infinite, and get harder each time. At this point we have purchased all of the upgrades: speed, sword power, storage. We have over 10,000 unspendable coins. And Im on level 129. The hardest level Ive gotten through took us over two weeks. We love it.
We loved every second of this game! It was easy to pickup and play, and we loved listening to the music and dialogue from our mom. Super interesting twist on a classic concept.
Its very much worth the .99 price tag.
We have an affection for the Atari 2600. This game pays homage to one of the best games of the system. It adds complexity, problem solving, and infinite replayability.
The game is a riff/homage of the classic Atari 2600 game ADVENTURE but its so much more!!! We love it.
We love this game so much! We still play Adventure and Pixa pays homage to this classic. Thank you so much for creating Pixa.
We basically never review apps, but this game deserves it. Exceptionally well written, great gameplay, good music and just all around well done. Little details like the barrel distortion of the screen to harken back to the big CRT TV we played Adventure on our parents 2600 35 years ago. Fun, inexpensive, simple entertaining apps are exactly what this platform was designed for. We so prefer to just pay up front and own the game, just like the before time that this game is all about. Thank you devs, excellent work.
We love this game like the original adventure Its more fun than adventure longer than adventure and our favorite the COINS!!finally you can not just have 1 thing you can have up to 3 witch is a massive improvement and also increasing the speed and even the sword we love it the dragons look better finally!! You can have a map!! This is the real sequel to adventure.
Honestly, this is one of our favorite games ever. In normal games, they start you off as a loved, respected person, part of the "illustrious player lineage". In Pixa, you must earn that respect. Also, we like how you grow more attached to the characters as the story goes on. You developers are very talented! We hope the source code makes it to GitHub.
For .99 cents is amazing but we have a complaint, maybe Im and idiot or something but we cant manage to get past the 9th level.
Its neat at first. Not really like Adventure aside from the look. No explanation about anything, but you get most things by dying a few times and learning how to do whatever, like sword fighting. Later levels are just you avoiding enemy after enemy after enemy with no sword.
We loved Ataris Adventure and this game remains very faithful to the original. There are 24 worlds with various monsters and you collect coins to level up. You can hold onto more than one item, increase your speed and improve your sword skills. The storyline is interesting. Im not a fan of the wraparound effect especially in unlit screens. And you cannot see objects in the dark unless they are in the candlelit area (a la Haunted House Atari game). Im now up to level 60 and our biggest complaint is that theres always two monsters on the screen. We wouldnt really mind that IF we COULD FIND THE SWORD!! Im not afraid of the monsters, but if we paid all that money for level 8 (max) sword ability, then for goodness sake give us a sword. The perk for paying for level 8 sword ability should be that we should be always outfitted with a sword at the beginning of the level, otherwise we feel cheated. We dont mind fending off and fighting five, six, seven monsters on a screen at a time (it does get crazy at level 60), with monsters moving at super speed and continually bumping into gravestones, rocks, etc, and the sword slipping this way and that after every fight, but please change the program so at the very high levels where were fending off hordes of monsters. At level 8, its uncomfortable to play the coward and run from fights. Valor forever.
We have always wanted a good remake of the classic Adventure and thus game delivers. Our only problem is the lack of instruction. We dont understand how the combat system works and usually end up running away from the because we cannot seem to defeat them. Give us some more instruction and we would give it a better rating.
We loved Adventure. We tried most of the homebrew sequels and this is by far the best. Once we figured out the trick to fight the dragons. That's the only downside, it's not clear how the dragon gauge works. For us, near screen-wide horizontal swipes back-and-forth relatively fast did the trick. The levels are fun with twisted layouts that challenge you to find the "chalice". To the developers: thank you for capturing the spirit and making an awesome iOS game.
Did you love playing Atari Adventure on the 2600 back in the early 80's? This game is for you. The sequel that never was. And those classic sounds. Love it.
For fans of Adventure for the VCS, as well as fans of sophisticated puzzle games like Lolo for the NES, rpgs like Ys for the TG16… We even get a little bit of Sierra and a bit of Myst vibes. The aesthetic combines the best of these different genres. Gameplay and mechanics are the best we've encountered in a retro-style game. A+.
So many levels! We're hooked! Get this game.
When we were a kid we played our Atari 2600 for countless hours. Simply put we had a blast with that machine and we still enjoy playing those old school Atari games today. Adventure was one of those Atari games we played a lot and we lamented the fact that it never received a proper follow up. Until now. Pixa is THE follow up to Adventure that fans like ourselves have been waiting for. Graphics and music are superb and the quests have that "complex simplicity" that good Atari games would deliver. While updates or follow ups to Pixa would be nice we're glad that the game exists in the first place. Buy it.
A modern look at the Atari 2600 Adventure. They kept the sound effects and look from the original but changed up the gameplay a bit. Its still all about finding the color keys to the castles to get to the Trophy and exit the level. Its very maze oriented and like the original the rooms warp you around so it isnt a straightforward maze. There is usually a map somewhere on each level to help you out (and yes you can take it with you because these levels are complex!). Many of the stages are in the dark. There are a few new enemies, and a storyline. If you enjoy adventure dont even hesitate to pick this up. Yes its a pain to swipe to everywhere (please add controller support) but if you can overlook that this is a brilliant effort by a 2 person team. Excellent.
This game is a great remake of Adventure. You get a mid game surprise once you collect all the trophys. STUCK on world 27 because the yellow key isn't anywhere! Otherwise great game. Edit: we beat world 27 but right now the game will randomly stop letting us move or close the map. If we reset with the map on, the map is still there. All we can do @ that time is pick up and put down items.
Many inside jokes or so we're guessing. The main character is Warren. The name of the maker of the original Atari Adventure. The final treasure references an Easter egg from the original as well. Good stuff.
This game is a time portal, with the power to instill in you the nostalgic rush of childhood joy. So much love went into this, and so much love came out. We can't thank you enough.
This game hits us in all our happy places somehow. Great music. Love the atmosphere. We have no idea how fights work, we just swipe like crazy and we seem to win but we bet we'll need to learn how to actually fight eventually. Also, we bought this game as a direct result of Doug Dug going free recently, so you can tie this sale right into that.
If you were a fan of the original 2600 adventure this is a great sequel. Captures key elements of the original game and adds new elements that fit in perfect. We hope the game designers keep keep up there great work with new releases. Hope they take a stab at sequels at other great games from the past.
Adventure was and is our all-time favorite game. We've often wondered why nobody ever tried to do a remake or knock-off of it. We've enjoyed this game very much. It has the feel of the old game, with a lot of cool enhancements, more types of items to use, and more types of monsters. We love it. Our only complaint is that there are no real instructions. At first, we had no idea how to fight with the sword, but we eventually figured it out. Awesome game.
True to the classic original. A brilliant homage. More devs should take the classics and just give them a tidy and heartfelt update like this one. It doesn't have to be all bells and whistles. Just sincere. How about Yar's Revenge next, fellows.
We are so greatful that there are developers out there to create games like this. A faithful improvement to the original adventure game.
We just beat the game the ending was great. One of the best games in the AppStore.
Buy this if you owned an Atari 2600 and especially if you played the game "Adventure!".
This game had us hooked in less than 10 minutes. Some reviewers have already written this but we'll write it again: if you grew up in the age of the Atari 2600 and were fond of "Adventure", this is really a must-buy game. Actually, at a buck, it's an absolute no-brainer. We couldn't put our phone down for hours at a time. We love the blending of the "Haunted House" look (we.e. Dark areas) with the continuously random maps from world to world. We've also really enjoyed reading all of the game reviews here. We look forward to what this 2-man development team can crank out in the future – a job well done with Pixa.
This is the game we all wished we could toggle the "select" switch on the 2600 and play Adventure on. It's basically the original game with tweaks and expansions – more of everything. Well worth the price of admission. Here's hoping the devs are planning to reboot Haunted House, Pitfall, and Superman, too.
For someone who grew up playing Adventure, this is just the kind of modern twist we enjoy on the old trope. Love it.
We never played Adventure on the 2600, which the game is apparently an homage to. That aside, we are loving the game and we're four levels from the end. One thing to note: we don't really bother fighting "fair" (since it seems that you are supposed to time your swings). We just swipe our finger back and forth rapidly on screen in wide swipes and it always kicks the monster's butt.
The old Atari game Adventure on steroids. All we can say is this game makes us happy when we're a bit sad! Great job Dev's :-).
One of the best creative and humorous games to remind us of our Atari 2600 childhood! Thanks.
We had a real blast playing through this game. We used to play Adventure for the Atari 2600 for hours upon hours on end, and this is the first tribute game we've seen since that gets the simple yet elegant nature of the structure. The random dungeons makes the game go on as long as you want to keep playing. Two minor quibbles… One no cloud save so playing on multiple devices messes up Game Center tracking and acheivements. Second, the antagonistic comments from the "adults" in the game seem mean-spirited and without real context. The story isn't really the reason to play this game. Since you'll spend most of your time wandering the mazes and avoiding/slaying beasties, it's not enough to deduct from the rating or reduce the amount of fun you'll have playing this gem! Thank you to the two devs that made this wonderful treat.
Atari 2600's "Adventure" updates for the 21st century. A must buy if you were ever asked "Have you played Atari today?".
Adventure on the Atari 2600 was a forerunner to games like The Legend of Zelda and this is a great tribute. If you are into nostalgic Atari games or want to play a great throwback game with fantastic touch controls this is your game.
Really tugs this old gamers heartstrings. Can't wait to see more from these guys. Awesome spin on a personal favorite.
The game perfectly captures the old Adventure spirit, but adds two mean characters to up the storytelling ante. Multiple dungeons with great, simple gameplay. Fantastic game- we haven't put it down since we bought it, and isn't that the best compliment for a game.
Most folks who grew up playing with their Atari 2600 tend it remember the games through the fog of nostalgia. Many of us who make the mistake of playing them as adults realize how limited and, well, awful they really were, especially compared to the NES classics that followed in the next decade. With pixa, the Electronic Toy Company has pulled off a small miracle: they've created an homage to 2600 games that plays the way you remember them, not the way they actually were. It's a witty game, full of clever nods to first-generation consoles, even as it delivers a thoroughly contemporary experience — one that is well suited to the iOS platform, to boot. Did we mention that it's a blast? :-).
We feel sorry for the little dot as his father appears to be dead and the mother character never seems to have a kind word for him. Im hoping she comes to an unfortunate end later in the game.
we grew up playing Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision…..etc. Our favorite game on the 2600 besides pitfall…..ADVENTURE!!! It was the first "RPG" of it's time……and it kept us and our friends enthralled for hours…..days……weeks…… The first Easter Egg was in Adventure……the secret room where the game creator did something that was unheard of at the time……he put his name in his game!!! Warren Robinett. It was brilliant at the time…..still is today!! We're assuming that is why "Hero" or the square you control is named Warren Anyway……incredible game……the attention to detail of how gaming back in the very early 80's is recreated….it's just amazing. Scan Lines, the rounded TV, pixelated graphics, monotone sounds…..it's all there!!!! Thank you so much for this absolute treasure!!!!! It's worth much more then the $.99 they are asking…..you just can't put a price tag on nostalgia.
Adventure is one of our favorite games of all time. We bought an Atari Flashback just to play Adventure 2. It was fun, but a little underwhelming as we completed it in about an hour. THIS game is what we always wished Adventure 2 could have been, and more. Well done.
This perfectly captures the feel of Adventure while broadening the appeal by adding a bit of a story, new monsters, additional goals, and new combat dynamics. We love that a monster doesn't die instantly by just being poked with a sword. That was always too easy, and the new way of battling them adds more action to the game. The look and feel of the old style monitors is a very nice touch too.
Amazing retro game, and the attention to detail is awesome! We only wish you could save a game. We can't leave our iPhone on overnight and pick up our game in the morning, like we used to be able to do on our old Atari 2600.
Takes us back to the days of playing "Adventure" on the 2600! This is beautifully done with all the right touches. Perfect controls and awesome level design.
Less than 10 minutes in, and we're loving it! We grew up with Atari 2600, and so far this has captured the feeling of it perfectly. You have the rounded corners of the TV, the faint scanlines of the CRT, and a slight fuzz to everything when the colors are bright. It controls well, and the humor is snarky but we like it. We're only two trophies in so we can't say how long the game will last, but there are 24 cases for trophies, and at this point there's no telling how difficult some of them are going to be to get. If you have any fond memories of the 2600, or the Atari Adventure game, we highly recommend you spend the $.99 to get this.
We like gaming nostalgia as much as anybody, but these dragons are irritating.
