What Makes Acrostic Crossword Puzzles Stand Out
Acrostic puzzles are crosswords with a twist: find the hidden quote. This combination of crossword and cryptogram provides an entertaining brain workout. Each letter in the quote is linked to a letter in one of the clue answers. As you fill in more and more answers, more letters will begin to fill the quote grid, until eventually the entire quote is revealed. Once the quote is partially filled in, you can also do this process in reverse – each letter you add to the quote will fill in the corresponding letter in the clue answers. By working back-and-forth, eventually the entire quote and all clue answers will be revealed.
The app includes 60 free quality puzzles with no ads, ever. They range from beginner to expert from renowned publishers like Acrostica, Acrostics by Cyn, Lovatts Puzzles, PennyPress Anacrostics, Puzzle Baron and Spanish language puzzles from Tav Ripo. Additional puzzle packs containing 48 to 50 puzzles are available for a small fee; the full library is 7100 puzzles!

These are some excellent puzzles. Our mother used to buy these magazines and Id spend hours trying to figure them out. Fun to see them in an app. However some of the puzzles are very dated.
This is one of our favorite apps. Ive enjoyed acrostics since we were a kid, but doing them on paper required lots of transferring letters from one part of the puzzle to another (it reminded us of double-entry bookkeeping). With this app, both halves of the puzzle are kept in synch, so its easier to guess words and see if they fit. The puzzles themselves are well-constructed, with a mix of tricky and easy clues. And the add-on packs let you keep refreshing new puzzles at a reasonable cost. Many thanks to the developers.
It's a good interface, with just enough hint-offering to bail us out from time to time. We wish we could make the font bigger, but that's why they well cheap reading glasses. We do wonder if there will be more and harder ones on offer once we've worked through these… Oh, and thanks for the kids-level puzzle – time to get the grandkids to try this out.
The app plays well on the IPad but on the M1 MacBook, despite the store saying it will work on Macs, you can't enter letters into the grid. Instead you hear a beeping noise every time you try. So, a very mixed review.
We do these daily, why did you take away our volumes? If this is a new system it stinks. We would like our volumes back Linda Hoffman.
We love acrostic puzzles because the best of them set our brain on fire. This app, especially with v 4.8.9, lets us be fully immersed as we bounce seamlessly from clues to grid and back. We can see whats important at each stage and enter or erase flawlessly. Egghead Games Acrostics is the best acrostic app Ive ever used, and the range of puzzles goes from easy right up to the acrostaholic pinnacle. Our favorite puzzles usually are the themed CynAcrostics, which we find comparable to the New York Times acrostics. (Later.) But right now Im having a wonderful time on her American Acrostic Volume 10, Puzzling American Music. We literally cant put it down as one puzzle feeds into the next.
We dont like apps that interrupt you in the middle to ask you to write a review, so we rape them harshly.
Our favorite game, but its been a week since it would open. Deleted twice, re-downloaded, rebooted the phone, chanted magic incantations, laid on hands, burned incense Nothing! Tap to open. BLINK! Gone!! Help, please.
Been playing this for a while now and really like it, but just purchased more Puzzle Baron acrostics and now the app shuts down right after we try to start it.
Just purchased a new puzzle pack and the app wont open now. Ive enjoyed this app immensely until today.
Paid the $3.99. Had fun with some of those. Added $3.99 in app purchase, now we cant even open the app anymore. It immediately shuts down.
Real enjoyment. Only wish the words wouldnt slide up and have to pull it down every time we use the keyboard.

We have been enjoying this app for at least two years. Now all of a sudden we cannot see the list of our Unsolved Puzzles. Need help with this or we can no longer select a new puzzle and play the app.
We love this app! However, since the 4.8 update of June 2022, there seems to be no way to purchase puzzle packs on ipad. We've contacted support with no response, we're hoping posting something here will get someone to notice. We've tried many times and while we can see the packs for sale, there is no way to purchase them. Please help! EDIT: problem fixed in new 4.8.1 version! Support was great.
We have been using this app for years and have enjoyed it immensely. The mix of of puzzle choices is excellent and entertaining. And the customer service is incredible. We encountered an issue with the latest update and received an almost instant reply with information on how to solve the problem. We cannot recommend this app highly enough.
This is by far the best acrostic format we have played. We have made more than 75 in app purchases for additional puzzles. Lately, it seems the new purchases are repeats of old puzzles. We dont know if we should purchase any more add-ons. We dont want to buy the same puzzles we have already completed. Can you tell us if this trend of repeating old puzzles continues? Update: we have updated this review to 5 stars. Michael with customer support worked diligently to correct the problem of repeated puzzles. Resolved the issue and kept us informed all along the way. Would highly recommend.
We have subscribed to their games for years and love them. We reached out with a question about replaying some and got a response within minutes that addressed our query. Great customer service and great games and format.
Ive spent much too much time solving these double acrostics. We really enjoy this app. Our only complaint is the occasional puzzle where a clue references another clue by its letter. While this is standard in double acrostic puzzles, it slows down the flow by making you count the clues, since theyre not labeled in the game (as they had to be on paper). Since thats our only complaint, we think were doing really well.
4 stars because we like acrostics. That rating would be an easy 5 if Apple Pencil were supported. Im playing it on an iPad, and the size of the quotation is very small and tapping on an individual letter is difficult. We understand theres a lot of info to display and compromises must be made. That tapping would be much easier if a tap with an Apple Pencil brought up the keyboard, rather than the drawing interface, as it is done in Cryptograms, another 5 star app by Egghead.
This is one of our favorite puzzle types, and the app makes it easy to play. We would LOVE it if there were a way to hide puzzles we do not wish to solve, however. There seems to be no way to do this,.
We've loved acrostic pizzles for years and am delighted to find the Acrostic app, As an aging adult they are just what we need to help keep our mind sharp and still have fun.
Absolutely wonderful, free crostics! Not too hard, not too easy, good features like "Hints" and "Erase Errors", works smoothly, easily, and without bugs, very large variety of quality puzzles, no hokey, kluged-together, forced word clues. Highly enjoyable.
We love this app for doing acrostics! Its a lot easier to use than doing the puzzles on paper. Additional puzzles are reasonably priced.
Even on full size iPad, the display is pretty awkward, as the clues and solution really can't fit on the screen. We were disappointed in the puzzles themselves. Some were fine but a big chunk of them are in Spanish and too many are heavily British in word choice, clues, and sometimes spelling. We especially hated the ones by Cyn, attempting a show-off humor, usually with a British slant that left the clue incomprehensible even after we'd solved the puzzle from the other words.
So happy to find acrostics here. Our only wishes are to make the little squares of the quote bigger for our old eyesand to have more easy ones available. Otherwise brilliant.
We love this app bc it makes our favorite kind of puzzles so much more accessible. However, we would really like to be able to delete or at least hide puzzles we do not wish to complete. Also, when we opened the app just now, the library was gone, and it looks like we have to do puzzles in the random order the app assigns instead of going in the order of the publishers we choose to do. We give three stars because this is now two updates where the interface has gotten less user friendly and more rigid. Please give an option to hide or delete unwanted puzzles, and/or let the user go by just the publishers and numerical order they want. Thank you.
Our Grandma introduced us to acrostic puzzles many years ago; we spent a lot of happy hours chasing down the right word trying to solve the quotations. We love this digital version that we can play anywhere, even while waiting in line at a drive-thru. The puzzles are enlightening as well as challenging, and help keep our old brain in decent functional order. In addition, the support for this app (from Egghead Games) is phenomenal! Id rate it 10 stars if we could.
We need more of the easy one block puzzles (like the kids packs but for adults. We dont want to buy a set with mixed levels. One block of difficulty is what we need. Would be cool if there was a hint or check for errors button on the top lever. Highly recommend. Really love this game and all of their others. Hardest levels of their others are fine, but not for this one.
Great Acrostic app packed with included puzzles in varying degrees of difficulty. We use it all the time. Its nice to have these puzzles right on the phonea perfect time killer. If you need to purchase more puzzles theyre pretty reasonably priced. Customer service is quick and pleasant, but you shouldnt really need it; the app works reliably.
The fact that we cant play a whole set of the games because we dont speak Spanish takes it down a star for us. The games we can play are very fun.
For a few weeks, this app was great. Then after about a month, it started erasing our correct answers- at first, just a few letter, then nearly all of them. (we know they were correct because we used the Hint function to get them after noticing that obviously correct letters were disappearing.) Contacted customer support several times; no response. So eff u, Acrostics app!! UPDATE 2.14.21: Developer fixed this app and its now working just fine.

Challenging game for those who like crossword and cryptogram puzzles! Once you complete the starter pack you have to purchase more puzzle packs to keep playing, but theyre not too expensive for what you get.

Why is 20% of puzzles in Spainish.
Not very many puzzles with each difficulty level. And we dont speak Spanish, so we wish there was a way to remove those from our puzzle list.
We have played these Acrostic games by Egghead for years and absolutely love them. The format of the puzzles runs smoothly and we like the fact you can have a little help if you want it. The content of each puzzle is interesting and often amusing. A good form of entertainment that keeps us on our toes mentally. We had a problem with our iPad and lost all of our purchases. Egghead responded immediately and restored everything right away. Good people to work with.

This is a great acrostic app. Ive bought dozens of puzzle packs. Tech support is very good too. They went to great lengths to help us with a problem.
We been happily using this app for several years and played each puzzle at least twice. But they dont seem to be adding anymore puzzles. When we attempted to email them from their service page, after Id filled out the email form it told us that using that form was forbidden (say what?). Anyway, Id love it if theyd add some more acrostic collections but we guess Ill have to find another app. Ce la vie.
Its how we get to sleep at night, the only thing that helps our insomnia. We play it for 30-45 minutes and it wears our brain out enough to finally sleep. Works better than melatonin. Wish they had anagram magic squares as a game app though. That on is our favorite Penny Press game.
The PennyPress acrostics are not as satisfying as the other brand.
There are some issues here. Sometimes the clue states that the answer is two words, but its only one. Choosing to erase mistakes will sometimes erase correct letters. Ill immediately put the correct answer back in and retry to erase mistakes for the correct answer to now remain. Theres a bunch of little things like this that make this app not worth investing our time or money in. Update: to the developer, the puzzle where we experienced the most issues, and the one that caused us to stop, but not the only puzzle where we experienced these issues, is the one that uses a quote from Simon Singhs The Code Book. We were on the newest app update, iPhone 14 Pro Max w/ most recent version of iOS. We dont recall any specifics about which individual puzzles than what we listed above. We played around 40 puzzles and was working our way through the expert puzzles. We hope that helps. We can add some specifics about the puzzle we listed. We had all answers correct and the puzzle wouldnt finish. It stated that we had an incorrect answer. Checking for mistakes erased correct letters and we put those back in and finally got it to accept that the puzzle was finished. We recall one answer being selectw. It would erase the first e and t and did so multiple times. Then it was just the t that was erased and then it stopped marking it as incorrect.
Love it, just wish we were smarter.

Too many of the puzzles are UK English-oriented and as such may be a bit more obscure to us ignorant colonists lol! Theyre fun but sometimes the hard ones are easier than the easy ones. Great good fun nonetheless. Thanks.
