"The game’s sound design is the strongest facilitator of Anodyne’s sense of dread and unease; the ambience and music give off an air of suspicion and danger, with ugly chords and disquieting, unnatural-sounding synthetic pings. It all adds up to a game where you’re not sure who to trust, and you can’t be sure of what’s real."

  • Penny Arcade Report

"[The developers] have made magic with this game, creating a world that I could be afraid to enter but never want to leave…The locations are vibrant and detailed, going to all manner of different places…[the music] can take the visual mood and shift it into territory that pixel art shouldn’t be able to inhabit…this has Game of the Year written all over it."

Find out what gamers are saying about Anodyne Mobile:

We’ve basically binge played this game, which is saying something because Im not a gamer. Im really enjoying it! Maybe its because Im playing on our phone so at times the controls are a bit hard or maybe its because Im not much of a gamer, but there are a couple sections where Im like gahhh! We cant get past the 3 air vents towards the end. We like exploring all the dungeons and most of the time we feel the right amount of challenge. Well worth the time spent. We hope they make another game.

Loved this game on console. By the way, tou really gotta fix the screen orientation screwing up at random times. Happened during a boss battle and we died because we couldnt see half the screen or buttons. Speaking of the buttons it would be nice to have some haptic feedback from our phone when the buttons are pressed so we can feel them without looking while we play the game.

Paid $5 for this game and we have to constantly restart it due to the d pad getting stuck in a direction causing us to die and have to restart the game from the last save we had, hoping it wasnt too far ago. We cant pass the final boss due to this issue, it has made us lose interest in the game.

The control pad makes this game unplayable. Absolutely trash. Dont waste 5 dollars.

This is by far our favorite game on ios. Controls are fine on our ipad, we assume the game wasn’t made to be easy (and thank you for that). Great writing as well.

First off this game is great. The entire game feels like a long lost Gameboy Color game. The level design is perfect, and we got the soundtrack before we even finished the game. One minor complaint specific to the IOS version. This version adds a white dot that follows the main character around to assist in control, we believe it’s logic is backwards. It’s only supposed to appear when you have touch controls enabled, but it seems it’s backwards. It’s there on d-pad only and missing on touch-only.

It is especially frustrating during parts that require plat forming including boss fights. Furthermore when pressing the directional pad diagonally you automatically start walking, thus making platforming terrible. Edit Controls are better know, making the game a whole lot easier not to die thanks.

Not only the best game we’ve played on the iPhone, but probably one of the best we’ve played that has come out in years. If you’re a fan of Zelda it’s a must have.

This is probably one of our favorite games recently for its atmosphere and imagination. It’s a strange game but a great trip, especially the music. There are issues with the port but it’s well worth it for a mobile version of this game. I’d recommend checking out the PC version as well.

Loved this game on PC. Great on the iOS as well.

For those having control issues try setting the controls to D-Pad only. This game is pretty cool, we love the music! We’ll edit this as we go.

Anodyne has a great story, amazing music and is overall a great game. Sadly we think there are some flaws with the port to iOS. The control pad is a bit clunky and we got slowdown when there was more than a 5-ish creatures on the screen, so we can only give this a 4/5.

We want to like it. It has great atmosphere. But the controls are atrocious. Walk off ledge. Get pushed off ledge. Rinse repeat. Continue. Just a frustratingly bad implementation of directional pad.

We bought this game because we watched a friend playing it and it was a lot of fun. He didn’t seem to have much of an issue with the controls so we bought it. However, after three days of owning this game we can’t progress any further because of the clunky controls. We have a 4S, while our friend has a 5C, so perhaps the screen size is part of the control problem. Either way, they need an overhaul. The buttons need to be larger and the D-pad needs to have a larger contact patch or it should be replaced with a something else entirely. That all being said, we very much want to play this game. It is witty, well-developed, and intriguing. We look forward to a future update that improves playability, because this game looks like a great amount of fun.

An exercise in frustration, the d-pad either needs more range (bigger) or needs to be a dynamic floating d-pad ala the Final Fantasy games. Game looks interesting but we gave up at the first boss due to the frustrating controls.

The game is practically unplayable due to the terrible framerate and bad controller. We should have paid attention to the reviews. We tried rebooting the game several times but it didn’t fix the framerate issue. Waiting for update.

Controls are miserable, one star until movement is fixed. Really glad we only paid a dollar for this. It’s a shame too, because this is such a great game otherwise.

As soon as we were getting into the game the game stop loading. We get a black screen and title screen can be heard. Would like an option the remove that awful white dot!

This is very disappointing. We love games like Zelda and Secret of Mana, so we were excited to play this. The game lags horribly. We have to constantly reset our device just to play for a few minutes. The controls are unresponsive. The bad controls, frame rate, and lag make the game literally unplayable. We hope one day we can actually play what we spent our money on.

But the controls are way too glitchy. In order to kill a monster or make your way across blue pulsating lasers you need just the right amount of distance and precision to manage both, but can’t because the controls get stuck (even though their digital) and send our player charging in one direction! We keep dying because of this and it’s getting frustrating.

For terrible D-pad controls in an iOS game. The game itself it pretty fun, but this flaw makes playing it beyond frustrating.

We bought Anodyne on the Steam summer sale for PC/Mac, and have been enjoying it immensely. So much so that we wanted to check out the game on iOS. Everything is in tact, except there are MAJOR control issues. I’d advise against buying this until the controls are straightened out. We’re playing on an iPhone 5, and was hoping for a good virtual D-Pad. The other reviewers are spot on. Occasionally your character will dash off in a random direction, often resulting in death or injury. Also, the D-Pad feels unresponsive. We’re not interested in the touch controls, as the game screen is so small that blocking out our character with our finger doesn’t suit our play style. On the bright side, it looks like the developer has been patching this pretty regularly, so hopefully this will be resolved soon. Until then, we’ll be enjoying it on our laptop instead.

This is by far the single worst control experience on any game we have played in the app store. We were expecting "bad" controls due to the other reviews here but these are not just awkward, they are buggy and unusable. Often when you lift your finger off the screen the character keeps on walking. Occasionally you walk in the exact opposite direction from what is pressed or the character randomly switches directions. We cannot fathom how this was released to the store in this state. We hope the developer completely rethinks his control scheme for the next update because this is a shambles.

We really wanted to love this game, early levels = awesome so zelda like. We desperately wanted to love this game. Controls are so poor as soon as you get to any depth in the game where jumping is an issue it’s impossible to play. Constant deaths and boredom. Such a shame as it could be an awesome game, we wanted it to be 5 stars but impossible to play. We’re afraid another delete !!

We had no idea this game was being ported over to iOS and immediately grabbed it when we saw it on the AppStore. This is an amazing game and everyone should grab it. We’ve read a ton of praise for this game over the past couple of months and so far it’s all been worth it. Also a huge thanks to the developer for fixing the issues we mentioned in an earlier version of this review. Five stars for sure!

We beat the game almost entirely without the jump fix update. We died a lot, but we still had so much fun playing. When the jump fix came out, the levels right before Briar were so much easier, as well as collecting the rest of the secret cards and stuff. What we say to you guys complaining about whatever, stop being babies and play this awesome game already.

This game is one of the best games on the appstore.

Love the and but the latest update made the controls go from pretty annoying to insanely annoying. We keep accidentally touching the side of the gameplay area instead of the control pad! It’s impossible not to. We’re going in the wrong direction and falling off ledges constantly! Arrrgh. Please make the new control style OPTIONAL. It’s infuriating.

Touching the screen to move there is interesting, but we’re not sure that’s the best approach for a game like this. The fixed onscreen virtual d-pad still has occasional sticking issues (buttons held down well after fingers released)

The stuttering jump issue has been fixed. But unfortunately this most recent update adds a new problem. For some reason they added the ability to move by touching the game play screen. So when you are dragging right on the D pad, if you drag a little to far, your finger is on the left side of the screen and the unexpectedly player reversed direction. Thank you for fixing the horrible jump stuttering issue – please remove the ‘control by touching game play area’ feature. It kills the controls, and no one would want to control the game this way anyway, because the visible area is so small that you can hardly see anything when you put your fingers over it. If this issue gets fixed, ill change our review to 5 stars. Looks like it could be a great game, if it were playable. The small screen size is also pretty annoying but we can live with it.

One minor flaw: the touchscreen controls could use just a bit of tweaking, because they don’t feel quite as responsive as I’d like; and because of the game’s unusual aspect ratio, it looks its best in portrait mode, so our hands are pretty cramped after three straight hours of gameplay. It’s the first release of a port for a game designed for PC, so that’s pretty much par for the course. But then, all of that is forgiven by virtue of the fact that we played for three hours straight in the first sitting. I’d have kept going if our hands weren’t starting to exhibit signs of carpal tunnel syndrome. Suggestion to the devs: add some support for bluetooth control pads (especially the Caliber Advantage, whenever it comes out). You have our heartfelt gratitude for producing such a wonderful work of art.

Remember Zelda for the game boy from back in the day? Such classics like a link to the past, and the legend of Zelda? Well here comes that top down dungeon crawling goodness in Anodyne. We’ve only played the first hour but it’s basically Zelda’s little brother for the IOS we hope the game sells well so that the developer will make more.

This is a very very good adventure game!!!! But the controls need a little work. But other than that one of the best games that we played!!!

We bought this purely on the aesthetics in the screenshots, not realizing it was a Zelda-inspired game! The controls are great, although we have been injured by the D-Pad a few times, and killed by it once. Also, as it noted when we booted up, after a while (15 minutes, personally) the controls began to lag a bit, but we’re certain this will be addressed in a future update. One minor thing of note is that it feels as though we should be able to interact with the pause screen without using the side controls. We keep trying to touch all of the buttons out of sheer habit. This IS an iPad after all. XD Oh, new bug. We just switched between this screen and Anodyne while it was paused and all of the controls disappeared except for the ‘enter’ button. So, uh, yeah you might want to jump on that bug ASAP. We’re a forgiving dude, but others won’t be. So yeah, those minor things aside, all of which are very fixable, great job! We’re excited to play the rest of the game. (Played on iPad 4)

It was worth the wait to throw our money at this beautiful game!

EVERYTHING about this game is amazing, except the frame rate. It’s nearly unplayable on our iPhone 4, which is supposedly supported. Can’t wait to play the rest of the game if this issue is addressed. Thanks!

This game is really good. We love the story and the gameplay. It reminds us of our childhood when we used to play on our gameboy color. Our only gripe with this is the controls. We can’t get passed the mountain dungeon because the run and jump only work 50% of the time. Also the controls stick a lot causing us to did a lot too. Other than that its an awesome indie game!

Let us start by saying that Anodyne is a beautifully crafted indie masterpiece that tickles our nostalgic memories of Zelda ALTTP. The game is definitely unique and oftentimes oddly presented, but the dungeons are very thoughtfully planned out and every enemy acts differently and must be fought using unique strategies. For those of you used to games giving clear instructions in what you need to do and where you need to go, you might end up a little lost. For us, this is major plus. This game isn’t about rushing around to complete a quest, it’s about exploring and finding your own path. We give this game three stars based entirely on the controls, which we believe need a lot of work. Foremost, you lose a lot of screen to black bars surrounding the game. We realize this might not be possible to fix, as most of the areas are smaller than a screen, but I’d like to see something more suitable and immersive. Secondly, please give us alternative options for the controls, or even allow us to place them ourselves. Last and most importantly, PLEASE work on the input lag. We realize you suggest popping out to main menu, but it happens so often that it becomes extremely frustrating. We sometimes feel like we are playing an old game boy with sticky buttons, on a touch screen! We have no issues giving this game 5 stars if the input controls are worked on. In a small note, exiting the app via multitasking breaks our game. When we enter back in, the screen is shifted all the way to the left and all the onscreen buttons disappear. This isn’t game breaking for us, we just wanted to notify the developer. We’re sure this is an easy fix. Regardless, we are thoroughly enjoying this game and hope you bring some more indie love to the AppStore.

We like the idea of the game. It’s a fun throwback to the good ole days. However, the control scheme MUST be more forgiving of our thumb slipping out of the designated joystick zone. Either make the virtual joystick area larger, or incorporate a floating joystick so that it can move or be adjusted to the player’s preferences, either in the settings or on the fly. Second, all iOS users (at least those of us playing on our phones) have a small-enough screen to work with as it is. PLEASE make proper use of the entire screen by ditching the side panels were the controls currently reside. Transparent controls on top of a full screen of game is much better than cutting off the edges of the screen so the controls can be placed (like on a classic Gameboy, which we can appreciate but not desire on an iOS device). Overall, good first attempt. We would love to see the above issues addressed. Thanks and best of luck!

Good idea for a game, but the control responsiveness is absolutely horrible/unplayable. Fix the joystick and movement functions to stop randomly getting stuck going in one direction, and make it possible to jump IN A DESIRED DIRECTION.
