Lots of depth in story and storytelling, and smooth combat mechanics. Another great retro rpg.

A real rpg. An excellent port from pc. In fact it’s better to play on touch screen than kb/m. Worth every penny and then some.

We like the plot of this game quite a lot. Spiderweb did a great job of creating an intricate story while keeping people hooked for a sequel with a spectacular ending. Another thing we like is the difference in game mechanics; it gives players the power to develop their own strategy. Healing outside of combat is by far our favorite. Other things to note include the class-based skill trees which offer a variety of ways to play (and the character classes are significantly different to justify the use of classes in general). Items like food and blessing crystals can make a huge difference in this game, but pure stats and equipment tend to make a lesser difference. Finally, the ability cooldown system is pretty neat and helps balance the game in an interesting way. Last thing to note is the level cap: while 30 does seem low (and I’d still argue it should be like 5 to 10 levels higher), it is not all that bad as it seems — by the time we finished the game, we were around level 25 to 26. (Note: we finished the game on Normal Difficulty with no cheats.)

We’re about 15 hours into this game and we’re starting to sincerely love this game.

Spiderweb Software makes the best story driven RPG’s that we ever played. If you like old school fantasy RPG’s like Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Avernum, and Dungeons of Chaos on iOS, then this game is for you!

We’ve been looking for a good rpg game forever from the App Store and finally found it! The reviews were right- this game is awesome! Thank you and Ill definitely be getting the rest of the series when we finish this one!

Jeff is a thug AND infatuated with guns. Spiderweb’s games, and anything similar, should be front page recommendation worthy! Classic rpg goodness at it’s goodness… Est… Iest… Seriously!

It is a great game and takes hours to finish. Love the story line and the main characters that accompany Tristam. One recommendation to the developer team is to adjust Redbeard parameters in the game ending. The only way we could beat him with only 4 characters including Tristan was to use cheat code. Either change the ending to where based on the choice Tristam make is either he committed treason, and was sent to exile, or took a place with Redbeard or battle Redbeard for the keeper seat. But if the latter is chosen, then reduce the spawning of the sentinels, allows higher impact to Redbeard when he gets hit and take it down to 1 hours vs. 3 hours even when we used cheat codes. The ending made it very frustrating to the point where we are not buying Avadon 2 and 3 just so we dont have to go through this type of frustration again.

Quality wise – we bought the game after the latest patch and had no trouble playing thru to the end. On the iPad 3 there were slight delays which were not overly annoying. Fine job by a very small studio, we wish they would port all their stuff.

Starts slow but stick with it – gets better as it goes. Not without its flaws but a wonderful turn based game for the iPad.

This game is a fantastic RPG that keeps you addicted and playing. We wish the iPad had more of these games then the 5 minute waste of time crap that’s out there. Well worth $10!

This is one of the most well developed RPGs we have played on Any platform. It is definitely one of the best if not the best rpg available on iOS.

Ok, yes the graphics are old school and its a turn based rpg, but we haven’t enjoyed an iPad game this much in a long time. The story is excellent, the combat fun, and it’s actually an rpg, not a FPS with a few rpg elements mixed in. We have purchased many of the new, graphically superior games on the iPad, but although they look beautiful, we usually get bored playing them after a few hours and we just delete them. Not so with Avadon, the game is deep, fun, and a blast to play! Good job developers, we need more games like this. Can’t wait for Avadon 2 (someday) and Balders Gate this fall. We are so happy that the iPad has these great RPGs available, we fear that every developer thinks all games have to be some kind of COD clone with a 4 hour campaign to be successful Gonna try out Avernum soon also, great job Spiderweb!

Fantastic fun for fans of classic turn based RPGs. This game, as well as spiderweb’s other, Avernum, provide hours of addicting fun. We can’t say enough good things about this game.

This is one of the few games that we actually come back to play on the iPad. Normally we lose interest on iPad games but this is one is just so engrossing that our iPad actually runs out of juice. We got it on sale but it’s worth the $10! We’ll be getting the other games from this dev when we finish this one. Wish there was more games like this on the iPad.

Reminds us of the Ultima series for the PC back in the late 80s and early 90s but with better graphics and sound.

Exactly what we were looking for since playing real D&D. Now just waiting for Baldurs’ Gate to be released on iPad.

We love this game, we don’t understand why it’s not on the front page of ITunes, this game is one of apples best RPGs it has the deep gameplay it has a great story and its a long game to fall in love with. We mean, yes, the graphics on this game don’t blow the doors off any building but, really lol it’s a ipad not a ps3, that honestly should not matter. But even if it did matter, don’t use that as a excuse not to buy this game…. Your just hurting yourself.

Enjoying gameplay, but the app isn’t running now. Get the glitches out and we’ll give it five stars.

While this is quite easily the most enjoyable RPG available on the iPad, there are however a few bugs. The most grating is that for some inconceivable reason, we are unable to gain entrance to the wizards tower in Wylrdrylm. No matter how many times we talk with Carsta’arl, the dialogue options are always the same and it always ends with him assuring us entrance to the wizards tower, yet the gate remains closed. This bug is quite frustrating and is not permitting us to advance the main story, thus we are holding our initial 5 star rating hostage until the issue is fixed.

The delay lags between combat turns or occasionally during map movement turned us off from wanting to play it anymore. Shouldn’t. Have to wait 1/2 a minute at a crack.

We are a big fan of Spiderweb’s games, and we are sure this one will be wonderful on a PC, but there are giant lags between turns in combat, so much so that it feels that the game has frozen entirely.

Please explain why you increased the higher iOS requirement for this minor update?

Since the reviews were so good, we decided to spend the 9.99 and give it a try. We are so disappointed. The gameplay is very poor. A lot of story and little action. Don’t waste your money.

Wow, this is one awesome game. If you love RPGs you will love this game. The graphics are that great but the game is so well made that the graphics doesn’t really matter. The only negative thing about this game is we can’t stop playing it!! So much fun!!

We got this game based on the reviews. We have to say, we’re quite glad we did. As soon as it started, we realize that this game is very much like Geneforge. We have played all 5 Geneforge games, and am greatly looking forward to playing this game.

Easy to learn, hard to master, deep enriching storyline in an original universe. A must-have for all fans of the RPG genre.

This is a Baldur’s Gate 2 type PC game which in our opinion is PEFECT for the IPAD. This game is made by an indie developer which appears to consist of a programmer, his wife and some other person. The game play is nearly exactly like BG2. The story line is good. The graphics and sound are on the weak side but that’s to be expected from a small indie operation making a game of this size and caliber. If there was great demand for these types of games then the developer would be larger and the games would be more polished. However developers and gamers have moved on since 1999 and it doesn’t appear anyone else except for Spiderweb appears to be making these style games anymore, which is a shame. We will buy every RPG this developer makes to support this market. Hopefully others will too because I’d like to see some more polish go into these games. The game is a bit confusing at first and the map is also confusing; but after a few hours of figuring it out the game becomes more clear and the real genius of the developer comes through. I’d give this 4.5 or 4.75 stars out of 5 if we could. The game needs a little more polish – i.e. Better map, crisper sprites, better environments. But again, for what this game is, it’s good. Spiderweb isn’t Bioware and doesn’t have the same resources. Regardless, a tremendous amount of time and effort goes into the story and game play of this game and we hope the developer is well compensated for his effort to keep late 90’s isometric RPG gaming alive. Keep up the good work!

At first glance we thought it was just an unpolished poorly done game. We are sure glad we gave it a chance, this is by far the best rpg we have seen on the app store. It brings back memories of buldars gate, and ice wind dale. Great turn based combat, amazing story, and plenty to explore. We would love to see more from this developer on the app store, and we will be checking out his computer games.

For any RPG enthusiast. This is fantastic.

We have been playing the demo version for the PC and was most certainly going to buy it. Then, bam, it makes it to the AppStore! The game is suited perfectly for the iPad. Some of the buttons may be a tad small, and it would help to have the dialogue choice you’re selecting highlighted… But those are the only complaints we can come up with. For the positives: Fantastic gameplay, excellent story and writing, very entertaining combat, massive freedom of choice as the game progresses, and it runs beautifully on the iPad 2. This is one of the best RPGs we’ve ever played — hands down. No bells. No whistles. Just a spot-on game presented with a phenomenal amount of polish. It’s exciting to know there are still developers out there that focus on the core of a great gaming experience instead of the newest HDR lighting effects. Here’s hoping to see a lot more of Spiderweb Software!

Every aspect of this game is well designed. Turn-based grid-based combat system. Simple but deep skill trees. Lots of places to explore. Lots of non-linear side quests. Even an enchanting system for boosting your epic gear. Love it.

One of most engaging RPGs for the iPad. Definitely get if you liked the baldurs gate games for the PC.

This is easily one of the best RPGs out there. Jeff’s storytelling is amazing, and is at least as good as Bioware. He shows that you don’t need flashy graphics to make a great game. Highly recommended.

Along with the old gold box D&D games, Baldur’s Gate, and other classics Avadon stands as a beautiful reminder that great games don’t require state of the art 3d and massive graphic and sound resources… Avadon’s world is detailed and history-rich. Great story telling and good solid turn based play proved to us that there are still developers who actually put enough thought into their story and design to really make us lose track of time and get truly absorbed by a game. Great work!

Wonderful RPG title!!! Story heavy, isometric view, a HUGE world to explore, turn-based combat and distinct characters to control. If you’re like us and miss the old school RPGs like Baldur’s Gate and the original Fallouts, forget about the big budget developers and go for this. Spiderweb Software is an established indie developer that is porting its wonderful titles to the iPad. We don’t usually stop to write reviews, but we want to support those guys so they keep their titles coming!!! Thanks for reading!

We’ve tried a few RPG’s only to be disappointed. We took a chance based on reviews and, wow, what a fun game. Very in depth and a great story too. It takes a bit to become aware of all you can do but we feel we will play this game over and over so we should be better at building a character next time around. We like games to be open and not have some kind of over powerful boss to beat to finish a level and so far there doesn’t seem to be anything like that here. Sometimes it slows a little, characters get a little jerky but we think that can all be remedied with an update or two. A 5 star game as far as we’re concerned. D&D fans will find it similar to that style of game.

It is a lot of fun, you can make as challenging as you like, and worth hours of game play. We were sucked in and had the shortest 6 hour flight because of this game. Thanks guys, more than worth the money.

We rarely play video games but ended up giving this one a try after reading the reviews. We were not disappointed. It did not take us long to learn how to play and utilize all the character skills. The storyline was interesting and the hours passed quickly while traveling on the road to our next match during the weekends. We used to play D&D when we were younger and this game had that old Advanced D&D feel to it. We simply enjoyed it!!!!

This game stands apart from most ios games because it last longer than fifteen minutes. This is a great RPG with a rich and detailed world with LOTS of optional side quests and a deep story that develops differently depending on your choices. We hope that Spiderweb Software releases the Avernum series soon.

We’ve played quite a few Spiderweb games and loved them all and Avadon doesn’t disappoint. It has a good storyline and plenty of quests to keep you going. Our only complaint is that it lags sometimes and that can be frustrating. Still 5 stars though. Love it!

This is the first time we’ve felt compelled to write a review. We were a fan of RPG games such as Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights and this game is created with that familiar layout and functionality. From a design perspective the game feels robust, well constructed and contains more variety in items and encounters then we were expecting. So from a simple mechanical point of view we were pleased. What puts it way over the top is the ambitious and well executed storyline that really puts the player in a believable moral dilemma while providing him with the interactive tools to decide how to resolve them. We found myself carefully choosing which quests to fulfill and how to respond to NPCs sensing correctly that vastly different results could occur. Lots of fun and well worth it.

Best game on our iPad right now. Worth every penny!

Game is absolutely amazing. Original baldurs gate style stuff. But we’re wondering why the game has almost no sound effects or music.. Even a cheesy clink when we hit someone with a sword would make it better. Some great atmospheric ambient music and even a few dozen sound effects would make this game perfect.

… It keeps crashing. We’re not sure why. 90% of the time it’s during or right after combat. PLEASE UPDATE!!! It’s getting frustrating to play because it keeps crashing…

On the first mission into the dungeon the "choose a party member " selection page wouldn’t phase out, it just stayed there, so if you can Please fix this, it seems that this game would be fun, but thesis a pretty crippling bug:) Peace.

The game itself is compelling, deep, and fun. And despite being a high end game price wise (in the world of iOS games, anywhere else it is dead cheap) there is tremendous value considering its length and content. However, be forewarned. The game is buggier then our old college apartment. Starting the game with no other apps open immediately after rebooting our iPad we still hit a massive glitch within ten minutes. When entering the first dungeon the game refused to acknowledge any choice of a companion and would only allow us to proceed alone. Bear in mind you are specifically told to take a companion into this dungeon. Rebooting the game and reloading earlier saves let to the same issue. Only dumping all the saves and restarting the game fixed the problem. Happening at the very beginning of the game it was no big deal but can you imagine if it happened several hours in. Also the game hangs constantly. You will spend a lot of time waiting for the game to get on with it. Normally problems like this would turn us off of a game, but we no intention to stop playing. The game itself is that good. If an update fixes the glitches it will definately get that last star.

The harshest of Redbeard’s curses upon you, Vogel! You’ve stolen countless hours of our time with this amazing game! First of all, we’re only giving it 4 stars because it’s a port of a PC game. Yes, it’s a very well done port, but it’s hardly a game designed for iOS. There’s a bunch of spots where it’s kinda tough to hit the right spot without being very specific, and we’ve lost a battle or two because we accidentally tapped in one spot where we meant the one next to it. This is a minor quibble, though – the game is excellent overall. Plus, because it’s on the iPad, we can take it lots of places we wouldn’t bother with a PC. VERY well developed story, very detailed maps & areas to explore, mega tons of side quests & NPCs to talk to we’re guessing we’re about 1/3rd of the way through the game at this point, but it’s impossible to tell – we don’t think that every area of the grand map has as many explorable maps as the 3 we’ve done so far, but there’s SO MUCH DETAIL here. There’s a small novel’s worth of writing in the background of all these characters & their countries. We could go on & on – it’s an AMAZING RPG.

Good game but has a very bad memory leak.
