The Story:
You have been banished to the underworld, never to see the light of day again.
The surface is ruled by the cruel Emperor Hawthorne, master of the Empire. All of the known lands are subject to his brutal command. There, you are expected to die, a victim of starvation, horrible monsters, or simple despair.
But not all of the Avernites have surrendered. With magic and steel, they are forging a new nation deep underground. You can join them and fight for safety. Or freedom. Or even, if you dare, revenge on the surface-worlders who tried to destroy you.

We wanted to find a mobile RPG that was a real RPG, and not some scammy app full of pay walls. Not only does this meet that criteria, but the story line is awesome, the puzzles are compelling (except the lasers in 3; those were a pain in the A), and we could play the whole thing offline. We absolutely love this game. Theres not another mobile app like it. Great development work, thank you! We have played the whole thing, the first one twice, and we could play again. Its a little different when you make different choices, too.
We first discovered this developer on the computer, and was thrilled to discover that they had released this game on the ipad. It has character classes, an interesting and engaging story, and fun mechanics. The world in the game is absolutely enormous as well. The only thing that might be a turn off for some is that this game is text heavy, but if you like a game that is great classic role-playing with huge replay value, this is it.

Spiderweb Software makes the best story driven RPG’s that we ever played. If you like old school fantasy RPG’s like Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Avadon, and Dungeons of Chaos on iOS, then this game is for you!

We absolutely love everything about this game and our characters are only level 6 at the moment. Cant wait to continue further and so excited to see there are 3 more to the series we can play after this! We will be quite busy having a blast lol. Love the game, but it plays upside down on the iPad Pro, this means that we can’t play the game docked in the keyboard and have to then pick it up and turn it around. Please fix.
Something’s wrong in Avernum, and no, it isn’t pillars this time. No matter what we do, the party gets slaughtered at the top of the stairs into Fort Avernum. Right now, the game is a waste of money: don’t buy until this is fixed!
It took us a few months and about 40 hours but we beat this. We had close scrapes with death and the characters and world felt breathing to us. We look back on that as one of our favorite gaming experiences of all time. Now we’re on to Avadon!
We love this game! If you like retro rpgs like Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, this is a must buy! After playing this, we’ve decided we will buy all of Spiderweb Software’s games. Please release all the Avernum games on iOS!

Most in-depth and addicting RPG we’ve played on iOS. Would recommend to any fan of old school style RPGs.
In depth story, well balanced, hours of fun, and high replay ability make this an awesome game for the iPad!
HONESTLY WISH THEY WOULD MAKE MORE!!!! Hours of fun of exploring countless "dungeons". ( we think that’s the right word, unlike most games on iPad, you get to have the best of all worlds! , it’s not anywhere near the same level as skyrim by far, but it almost has a skyrim aftertaste to it….. And again we hope they branch out further.
We opted to play this over Baldur’s Gate, and it turned out to be equally as long, challenging, and addictive. Nothing original here, but an excellent classic RPG with plenty of challenges and replayability. We love the seemingly endless weapons, armor, and hidden items throughout the world of Avernum. It cost us $10, but worth every penny.
A full, in-depth RPG for iOS. Hours and hours of complex and open-ended gameplay. It would be a bit dated for a PC, but this is the first real RPG we’ve found on iOS, and we can’t stop playing it. No in game purchases, upgrades, etc. Many thanks to the developers for making this available. We hope for more.
We absolutley love this game! We’re a bit of an old-fart and really enjoy games that have a throw-back feel to them. Baldur’s Gate is one of our favorite games of all time and like others have said, this is similar. For $10 you can’t find better entertainment value if you’re into these types of games. Please keep them coming Spiderweb!
This is our favorite ipad game. Anyone who is a fan of turn based combat, exploring a large world with lots of hidden secrets and surprises, and rich character customization should own this.
Life in Avernum is hard, but that’s part of the charm. This is a true RPG, and it isn’t going to hold your hand as you walk down the lily strewn path to visit grandma. Your adventures will be grand. You will learn strategy, or you will die. This game and all that came before it, right back to the original Exile, deserve seven out of five stars. Exile 2: crystal souls defined RPGs for us, and only one series has met its match.
Have no clue how many hours we have put in this. Rare to see anything with this much depth.
It’s a very customizable rpg with a cool story/atmosphere and a ton of fun. Haven’t played an rpg we really loved on our ipad til we got this game.
We thoroughly enjoyed this game. It’s a remake of Exile: Escape from the Pit, which is an excellent game in itself. Avernum brings back fond childhood memories of dungeon crawling and spelunking in Exile. Although there are differences, we find the game to be just as good as the original. It easily provided 50 hours of gameplay (when we should have been studying for exams… Whoops). Overall, it’s the best mobile RPG we’ve played.
Avernum is a massive game that has true player choice, great combat and one of the most imaginative settings we’ve ever come across. Don’t be offput by the older 2D graphics. This is the kind of game that will immerse you in its truly open story and world.
Like an entire old school D&D 3.5 campaign in an app. Start out weak and work your way up to actually deciding the fate of the enormous world. There are countless dungeons, towns, and cities with unique twists that never feel repetitive. The interface works extremely well on a touch screen given the complexity. Close-up dungeons are linked by zoomed-out countryside movement providing the perfect balance between playability and epic feel.
We absolutely love the exploration elements and especially the writing. It’s by no means perfect- the controls can be imprecise at times, especially in combat. The graphics are also extremely dated and there is a complex level up system. That said, we can’t put this 30+ hour game down. Worth every penny and great for those who are new to the genre. Buy it!
This is not "Great for an iOS game", this is simply a great game period. Besides having a unique world, the game captures what was great about classic turn based RPGs like the venerable Gold Box games. If you are looking for a well made, lengthy RPG, this is your game.
We clocked in well over 100 hours before beating this game and loved every minute of it. If you liked pool of radiance, planescape torment, wasteland, or any such turn-based RPG then you won’t be disappointed with Avernum.
Really fun game. Even though we just recently bought it we already love the turn based combat and the spells. It’s nice switching between this and icewind dale to get a nice but similar change which is exactly what we were looking for. We love the style of graphics and how you have the option of creating the party. It’s also not complicated and easy to pick up. Old school is the only way! Enjoy.
We haven’t played yet, but this is a rewrite of Exile, which we use to kill tons of time playing 15 years ago. The game, and the story are amazing.
Quests, adventure, puzzles, combat. If you like it all, download immediately. We played Ultima type games for years, then came Doom along with the "shoot, loot, shoot, loot repeat forever genre and the concept of "Role Playing" basically disappeared. Well here, it’s back! Please support this series if you like to actually immerse yourself in a real ROLE PLAYING game where you play a role with an interesting story and combat, leveling, and enhancing your gear is a means to an end and not the sole focus of your gaming experience. We loved every minute!
We’ll keep it brief so we can get back to playing this fantastic game. Jeff Vogel, the mastermind behind a game company named spiderweb software, brings to the iPad, Avernum. We have been playing his games since the early 90’s when we got our first taste in a game called Exile. We came on floppy 3.5 if we’re not mistaken. This is a brilliant re-telling of that first original epic. If you’ve never played a game by spiderweb software, and you like games such as might and magic, ad&d darksun, wizardry….. You’re in for a treat. The game plays differently depending on the characters in your party. Very open ended and a lot of fun to just explore and get into situations. Fantastic spell and skill system… We could go on and on. In today’s world of great graphics, and mediocre depth, take a step into the world of Avernum and experience what you’ve been missing in most modern rpg’s. I’d give it six stars if we could….
Great, epic rpg that isn’t finished 100 hours in. One request: Can we get more quick spell slots? I’d rather have 4 more than quick item slots even. That would help considerably.
Good witty writing and a nuanced world make us a happy adventurer. And having it on the iPad keeps us peddling away on our exercise bike!
This is an awesome retro RPG. Brought us right back to the early days of computer RPGS. And it is lacking for nothing in its own right. Enjoy this game… Take the time to explore , talk with everyone , get into the story and we promise you you will truly be delighted in this game. We are an instant fan of this company and will be purchasing thief other games. These guys get it right.

This game is fantastic. We had played Avernum 3 a while ago so we were really excited when we learned this was available on iOS. Everything works great for the most part and I’d give it a 9/10 for controls. The stories are great as always. Combat is fun and there’s tons to explore. We really hope they release more titles. I’d really like to play 3 again.
It took us many hours to complete the three main quests of this game, we also did a big portion of the side quests. However there were still a good number uncompleted. Wish we knew how much time it actually took us. Probably 60 hours. Game is very fun, story and setting are especially interesting.
What an awesome treat to have this on the iPad. A true and great RPG. Really hoping to get the entire Avernum (and Avadon!) series on our iPad. A wonderful transition to the touch screen. We’ve been playing for many hours – very smooth and stable. Looks and plays great. We’ll buy whatever Spiderweb can give us on the App Store. We hope Baldur’s Gate EE can eventually play this well. We never played these on PC (I should have!), but we will play all of them on our iPad. Great games.
Old school, simple graphics, but a long and interesting story.

Played the original Exile series back in the 90’s. Avernum is very close. Love the in depth story lines and the multiple directions you can go. Dislikes are trying to enter/exit boat is difficult at times. Once you hit level 30 you no longer get skill points to allocate. Leveling and strengthening is part of the fun for us.
Really hard to see…. For us anyway. Our eyes aren’t 20/20 but they’re not terrible. It’s hard to tell if there’s loot, hard to tell/ choose precisely which foe we’re attacking, etc. We’re so disappointed because we very rarely spend this much on a game. We played it for a couple of hours but our eyes were so strained we had to quit. If your eyes are good, we think you’ll enjoy it!
This is a deep RPG, it has a vast world to explore and lots of quests. One major flaw is you can’t pinch zoom. When you’re traveling through the game it’s very very hard to identify things on the ground or anywhere for that matter! We find myself traveling a few feet than we press the inventory button to see if there’s anything we can pick up. It would help if the objects on the ground were more visible, keep in mind we have 20/20 vision. We hope the developers implement pinch zoom someday so we can see what the heck we’re doing! Until then this app will be deleted.
We were a big fan of the Exile games. This is a poor adaptation full. Almost every monster is a "dm special," and as a result combat is tedious and takes forever. Boss fights are particularly annoying, as you are in no danger of dying but they take forever to kill. No tension, tedious fighting.
Amazing 90s RPG adventure that had us playing till we drained the battery on our iPad. This game took us back to the good old days when of the RPG greats like Pool of Radiance and Ultima.
Avernum: escape from the pit is the best old school rpg on the market place. Lots of action and combat and a solid story line. It’s not just a quick run through game, it offers many hours staring into your iPad and completing many different quests. Anyone looking for that 40+ game on then app store this is it!
