Backgammon Guru Pro Reviews

We’ve been playing Backgammon Guru Pro (on a "strong" opponent setting) for a few weeks now on our iPhone 5. We do enjoy it most of the time, but it really bothers us sometimes that the dice rolls are not random. There is no way that the computer can roll doubles 4 times more often than us. 8 times out of 10, after asking us to double the computer will either roll doubles, or will get exactly the combination that can both knock off our piece and set up a great blockade. Just so you know, we’re a 55 year old science teacher with a Ph.D. We’ve been playing backgammon for decades, and we’ve also had multiple graduate level statistics classes, so we’re pretty familiar with the way dice rolls should work if they are truly random. Also, it sometimes takes us several tries to get our checkers to move. If you could widen the acceptable "touch" area after a piece has been chosen that would be nice. There’s only 2 places a given checker can go, so you’ve got at least half the screen to work with–there’s no reason you should have to touch right at the points’ tips.

A good tutor on backgammon. Against the computer they do get many doubles. Lucky for us the AI resigns when it is clearly winning. So it needs some AI tweaks. A good way to get into the game and practice moves.

Trying to change number of games in a match crashes app every time. Backgammon NJ HD is a far superior app in many ways. If you are serious about backgammon, choose that.

We write this after first move of a new game. Black (AI) starts. Black moved w19/w21(2) and w12/w14(2), but dice show 52. That would be a valid move if the dice were 22 (=2222), but the roll to choose who starts can not be a double. Using the rollback button, the moves unwind and the dice roll is now shown as 22. Play forward, then rollback to have dice shown as 52. BOZO (I used screenshot on iPad to preserve evidence). Note: our experience matches Austin3443! & Antiduplicity: excessive doubles for the AI "player" Take-Away: this stand-alone app is not a good lure for the companion website with "games" having cash prizes.

We found a bug with the latest software that allows illegal moves. There is nowhere on the site that we see to contact the company to let them know. Poor.

Where to start? Game board display places chips not centered on the points, point numbers appear off the board, cant discern where the opponent is moving, etc., etc. We’ve been robbed by buggy apps before, but this was the quickest realization that Id been taken.

We have an iPhone 12 and on our screen the graphics are completely broken. The checkers appear outside the board and its impossible to play. We regret paying for this useless app.

We’ve been playing backgammon for 30+ years and have played a number of these games. The algorithms are ridiculous and the game gets many times more doubles than the human. We bought the pro version and deleted it after about 10 matches. Terrible game.

Beware!! We wish we read the warnings before purchasing. Apple should be ashamed of allowing apps like this on their site. There should be a one hour cancellation policy!!

The game crashes constantly when you change the settings. And, what is this "doubling" business? That would never happen in a real match. Anytime the AI is up, it makes you "double" or resign the game. Seriously no fun.

Super good app!! Highly recommended for download!!!

Love backgammon works quite nice we enjoy playing it.

Very strong backgammon app. Easy to use and fast.

Very well designed backgammon game, highly recommended.

Love this game. Fun and really entertaining. :)

Great work from developer. This game has high quality graphics and great gameplay. Download today!!!

Fun game with a great tutor and many options.

First move of black crashes app every time. Rubbish.

Help!!! This game crashes every time, keep sending reports and nothing.

This game crashes every game!!! Absolutely teribble!

Crashed and closed whenever a piece was hit and sent to the bar. Wasted our money on this one.

Backgammon Guru is a fabulous app and we look forward to more of the same from this developer!

Before it was working fine only on the iPad but now it works great on our iPhone too!

Potential program but could use updates to improve and become a more active app. Please add a turn-based mode along with tournament play in turn-based mode including player ranking and stats. Graphics look a bit fuzzy on our iPad.

It cheats. We’re only an average player but was surprised at how lucky the program got. We started entering our own dice rolls and let the computer roll its own. It made some amazing rolls to prevent a loss.

Has potential but right now it’s WAY too slow and cumbersome. User interface needs to be improved. Speed needs to be improved. We regret upgrading to the paid version.

Great little app, well designed! We especially like the match analysis feature, we find it really helpful.

App performed flawlessly. No disappointments. Highly recommended.

A few bugs still to be flushed out (multiple on the bar shows wrong choices of moves, sometimes gets confused about whether you’re black or white) but a great educational version.

Crashes frequently and occasionally shows incorrect moves and nonsensical pip positions (eg black & white pips resting on the same point!)

Just bought this and it seemed to have lots of potential. We prefer the 1-tap moving of Backgammon NJ, but Guru Pro had its own advantages. Then, as soon we changed to OS 4.0 on our 3GS, the program crashed within one or two moves every time. Perhaps they will fix this and we can evaluate this app more realistically if it works again.
