Baduk Cap – Game Review
![]()
Baduk Cap is a game from Thomas Breitling, first launched in 20th July 2014.
It’s rated 4+ and currently has 57+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Baduk Cap Stand Out
Baduk Cap lets you capture positions on your wooden Go board and easily transfer them to the SGF file format (Smart Game Format) using built-in image recognition.
Include game information such as player names, ranks, captured stones, and more. You can copy the SGF file to the clipboard, send it by email, save it to Dropbox, or export it to apps like EasyGo or SmartGo Kifu.
Determine the winner and exact score of your game with the scoring function (available as an in-app purchase). Supported rulesets are: Japanese, Chinese, AGA (Area), AGA (Territory), Ing, New Zealand.
Because Baduk Cap automatically recognizes corners of arbitrary size, you can capture problems from books and export them to apps like EasyGo, which offer the spaced repetition system as a study tool.
Live capture of your game while it is being played is also supported, featuring automatic move recognition and automatic photo capture, or photos triggered via a Bluetooth camera remote. (This feature is available as an in-app purchase.) External cameras and webcams (UVC-compatible) can be used with this feature. Focus fully on the game instead of interrupting your concentration with manual recording. If you wish, you can broadcast your live game to the Mastodon social network.
Baduk Cap supports board sizes of 9 x 9, 13 x 13, and 19 x 19, and is optimized for both iPhone and iPad.
The following one-year subscriptions are available (Baduk Cap Pro):
• Scoring: Determine the winner and exact result of the game (tap the result for an explanation of how it was calculated)
• Game recording: Live capture your game with automatic move recognition, automatic photos, or photos triggered by a Bluetooth camera remote. Broadcast to Mastodon is supported. (Includes all features of the Scoring subscription)
These subscriptions do not renew automatically. After one year, you will need to manually resubscribe if you wish to continue using the unlocked features.
You can also choose the 'Lifetime Pro' subscription, which is paid once and provides access to all app features forever.
Each of the Baduk Cap Pro subscriptions also unlocks the following features:
• Siri shortcuts: Take a picture of your Go board with a voice command of your choice
• Dark mode
• Alternate app icons
This game offers engaging gameplay and regular updates for mobile players.

Community Insight:
This app is purpose built for a wide variety of useful situations regarding playing Go! We think a lot of the functionality and processes in the app are well thought out, but the developer is open to feedback and improving it. New Added that are incredibly useful and we think the app as well worth its one time purchase. If you play Go, download this for sure. NEW: On the iPads and iPhones with USB-C, you can now plug-in a USB-C WebCam, which is much lighter than mounting an iPad or iPhone for a live recording and SGF of your game.
Im going to keep this short and sweet. Love this app.
Exactly what we were looking for. Reasonable price for what it does. No data collection. Absolutely deserves 5 stars.
We just subscribed to get the live capture and its astounding.
BadukCap is easy to use and accurate. For quickly scoring games this app works great. We especially love how simple and fast the image recognition works which doesnt require any calibration from the user. This is a wonderful tool for regular play and can be a great asset for any tournament director. Im more than happy to pay for this app and support the development that went into it. Thanks.
Been using this app for many many years now and is absolutely fantastic! For anyone who is new to Go this app is invaluable as the scoring component is probably the hardest part for someone who didnt grow up playing. Ive also used the export SGF function to capture hundreds of go problems to import into other apps.
This is awesome, and simplifies the scoring and recording of games.
This is a really neat program! Ive been using it to help us learn how to score games, and Ive also recorded our games with it, to create an sgf file for later review.
This app is excellent and fun to use! The software finds the edges of the board pretty well, but just in case that fails it allows you to calibrate the corners and get it accurate. Multiple scoring methods are included too. The live recording is nice too, and we cant wait to try that feature with our club games. The game can be exported via e-mail to open in other apps such as PandaNet. Things to keep in mind: scoring is an extra $1 and live play recording an extra $5. $10 total was ok for us as it performs the tasks as advertised.
We tried photos, screenshots, tsumego problems, etc. Whatever we throw at it, it recognizes accurately.
Very easy to use and works great. Suggestions: 1. Make it recognize numbered stones. Convert diagram into sgf with the correct move order. (Useful for reading books without a go board). 2. When we take a photo and then accidentally hit photo instead of board', it deletes the photo and we have to retake it. This is slightly annoying.
It's intuitive, easy to use and accurate. We love being able to capture a game and import it directly into SmartGo Kifu.
Using this for the Go games we play against our friends, especially as a beginner, has been invaluable in determining who's ahead and how to properly score the game. Anyone who ever wants any clarification on their games needs this app – it's powerful, accurate, and works beautifully.
Just what we were looking for. Works like a charm! Totally worth spending the money, including the $1 in app purchase for the scoring. IMHO the price should be included into the total rather than having it extra. We're happy though.
This app is like magic for anyone faced with capturing go problems as SGF files. A quick snapshot of a printed go problem is accurately interpreted, even in poor light, and can then be imported directly into EasyGo, where you simply enter the correct move(s) and make it part of your mobile go problem collection.
