If you could implement the old touch control to fix the silver mage issue of not being able to see the whole range of movements, Id be very grateful. To any that havent played, we give this game 6 out of 5 stars barring the small issue mentioned. Brilliant game, always keeps us coming back. Edit: Thanks for the response! If we could add one more thing: we’ve been experiencing routine crashes while playing online. Maybe it could be because we were with people who were on PC? Not sure, but it made it impossible to finish several scenarios. Just a little bug, still love the game!

We certainly got our time worth. So for that alone, it is worth the price. The rng can be infuriating at times. Not a fan of that. Our gripe is the campaign Eastern Invasion: [el] captured is broken on iPad. You cannot move your heroes before the enemy kills them, unlike pc. It makes this scenario impossible. More than a year this has been reported. Update: 100 turns later and we lured them out, 1 by 1.

This could probably get a 5 if the UI got some TLC for the phone interface. Specifically, it doesnt seem to respect the save areas and so the notch gets in the way. Additionally some icons and text overlap in the top status area.

Just downloaded the game and none of the buttons work in any drop down. We’ve played this on the computer hundreds of times but first time on mobile. Literally you click a button and the drop down of actions come and then nothing works. Refund please.

New to this game and wanted to give it a try but after struggling with it for 2 hours we are now writing this review. It seems like a fun game if it works but when we use the action drop down and try to recruit more often than not it will not activate the recruit menu and the other half the time we have to tap quickly over and over to get it to work. A lot of freezes happen when using the undo action and when trying to set up a multiplayer game. Overall we would have loved to play it but in this form its unplayable.

Im hoping to turn this 1 star into a 5 star, but it looks like right now we cant actually play the game at all. When all of our units have moved all we see on the bottom right is a grayed out Next Unit button that we cant click. We looked in the menus on the top right to see if there was an End Turn in there, but it doesnt looks like there is one… Finally, we do have a keyboard for the iPad and tried typing in the keyboard command Ctrl-Space but it looks like ALL keyboard commands do not work. Hopefully, this gets fixed?

We’ve played this game on pc, Ubuntu, Android, and now iPad – we’ve always casually enjoyed it but the iPad version made us adore it. Great for people like us who want mobile pc games rather than a proper mobile game.

Battle for Wesnoth is a must-own game. Intuitive controls are combined with a fascinating battle system to create a unique gameplay experience. There are a host of available campaigns and multiplayer maps on the base game itself, with scores more available from the immense add-on repository. You can even create your own campaigns using an easy-to-use map editor and a programming language designed for the game itself (Wesnoth Markup Language, or WML). We’ve played this game since we were in high school, and have downloaded it onto every device we’ve owned. The iPad experience is a far better one than back when we would play this on a first-generation iPod Touch and the hours of playtime generated are well worth any price.

Highly recommended to anyone who appreciates imagination and beautifully drawn art. Put yourself into another world and help save the day for a vast assortment of intriguing characters.

Bug in Captured – freed units can’t move immediately after being freed, so your leaders die basically immediately. :( Otherwise great port.

The Rise of Wesnoth- Clear Water Port -Turn Four will not save and go to the next turn. We have an iPad Air running the most recent operating system. And we have loaded the most current version of Wesnoth. We have run into this bug before for other scenarios where you can give commands to your allies. Please fix this scenario so we finish it. It is a very good scenario.

We dont usually take the time to leave reviews but this game is special; this is literally the most fun game on our ipad and it would be a shame to not tell others about it! There are so many garbage games out there with ads and pay-to-win gimmicks that when you find a game like this; it is a breath of fresh air in a chamber full of stale games that only care about raking in money and not providing a quality experience to their players. We will try to break this game down for ease of this review: Gameplay: This is a fantasy setting, turn based, strategy game on par with many PC games; in fact Wesnoth was ported from PC which has only solidified its gameplay value. This game has amazing forking pathed campaigns. It can be played online or hotseat mode with friends (a very rare feature in games today, we would like to add) and it has addon community-made mods which makes for a lifetime of replay value as each one can change the game completely for an entirely new experience to enjoy! There is also a role-playing element to this game. No two units will be exactly alike as they have stats and you are free to name your troops at any time! Graphics: The graphics are bright and charming and are rendered in beautiful HD. The terrain and scenery pull you into the beautifully crafted world of Wesnoth. The units and monsters are neatly animated and will amaze you as they move through the land and battle one another. The UI and maps are keenly rendered and the menus are pleasant to navigate as well. Sound: The music is amazing! There is basically an entire orchestra setting the mood for the stories and battles which will pull you in and let you feel the glory, epicness and desperation in the battles you will wage. The sound effects are great as well: You can feel the thunk of the maces, the clangs of the blades, and the might of the magic spells through the sound effects! Story: As mentioned in gameplay, the campaigns are expertly crafted and your choices will change the story completely. The stories in these campaigns will pull you into the history-rich world of Wesnoth. Difficulty: The campaigns have a wide range of difficulties so that a novice can pick this game up and learn to play or a veteran of the strategy genre will have a challenge that will force them to really plan out their tactics! If youre new to strategy games, dont be intimidated! Anyone can pick this game up and learn to play quickly and have fun. Multiplayer: The fact that this game has a pass-and-play hotseat element is enough for us to recommend the multiplayer. There are not enough mobile games with this feature but, if this does not appeal to you, the game also has a thriving online community with multiplayer campaigns, cooperative or competitive maps and scenarios and, as aforementioned, user created addons which can also be played with others as well. Overall: This game is worth much more than the money being charged for it. In a time when greed through micro transactions and ads is ruining Mobile gaming, we need more like this; good quality games with developers that actually care about the gameplay experience they are bringing to their players. They have poured their hearts into this game which you can tell as soon as you play it. This game is constantly being updated and being made better. We urge you to help support this trend in mobile gaming! Good quality gaming should be supported and rewarded. Try Battle for Wesnoth! You will be glad you did!

Great game keeps you busy for hours hard to find games like these these days.

If you like turn-based tactical games with a Tolkien-style fantasy, this is your game. Its one of those that is easy to learn but hard to master. It has beautiful pixel art, and a lot of quality additional content that can be downloaded for free from the internal package manager. This is well worth the money.

Good depth with plenty of scenarios to play.

An otherwise great strategy game is ruined by having to roll for every single hit, every attack – at extremely low percentages (often 40% or worse hit chance). It is simply not fun to painstakingly plan a strategy to have it fail due to simply bad rolls on the random attack chance. We suspect the app developer is paying for positive reviews as there is no way a serious strategy player could enjoy a game this completely random. Also the interface is total garbage – very poorly implemented port.

Used to love this game. Can’t enjoy it with the dragging controls.

We cant seem to move any of the pieces. We can see the highlighted areas where we can move but it wont let us move the pieces. Can someone please help us?

Highly engaging strategy game. Past the initial purchase, NO in-app purchases. Dozens of mainline campaigns and hundreds of user-made campaigns (Legend of the Invincibles is highly recommended) across a wide spectrum of difficulty, with massive variety in scenarios. Bog-standard orcs vs. Elves fantasy? Plenty of that. Postapocalyptic desert elves fighting eldritch abominations? Also available! Want to fight the necromancer? Go right ahead. Want to BE the necromancer? Get ready to smash some do-gooders! And in user-made campaigns, you can play as just about anything including a giant cuttlefish. Try it out, seriously. Just make sure you have some spare time.

This was awesome game back in the day, and a good port to mobile. Good for offline play while traveling.

Just a great game, played this for hours back around 2008 on our old iMac. (Ahhh memories) They changed nothing about this from the old version we played on our iMac, WHICH IS AMAZING!!! They added and zoom feature to make movement and attack easier on your phone. The campaigns are fun and the stories are creative. The unit advancement and variations of attacks, counters, and effects make this AWESOME! It just feels old school and really plays well. We just cant believe we can finally play this game again, and play it on our phone!!! We hope someone is making add ons and more campaigns as we type this. This really is nostalgia for millennials who wanted to be gen xers!

It would be great to add a map editor.

Straightforward, tactical/strategic, horse, bowman, heavy infantry, spearman, footpads and magic user characters with terrain features that accentuate or limit their abilities. The tutorial is solid and has you up and running and playing in no time. Really great game with nice plot scenarios that are well thought out. Nice gem on our phone.

So tired of pay to play and time based bs. It is refreshing to go back to the days of buy the game and play as much as you like. Is it a perfect game of course not but they did a great job and it is very worth playing. Deep turn-based highly recommend. Again thank you devs for making a game right. Will follow and continue to support.

This is an excellent game! We have played it on our desktop for a while but the mobile version is so much more convenient to play. The updated graphics are good and Im glad that more content was added to the mainline campaign’s. Well done boys keep up the good work!

Been playing this for years in different iterations and oss. No pop up adds, not constantly asking for money. Just consistently good, sometimes challenging always entertaining. Great user additions. Improvements over the years actually improved.

We prefer the pc version bc mouse but its a good mobile port anyway.

This is the BEST game. We only wish we had found it sooner.

We had never played Wesnoth before. Like the other reviewer, Im a big fan of tactical gameplay and grew up with Fire Emblem, FF Tactics, Brigandine Legend of Forsena and the like. Discovered Wesnoth just by searching on the App Store and really enjoy it. The controls can be inconvenient at times on the phone, but we would still give 5 stars for the interesting game play and enjoyable light lore. We enjoy the campaigns. The variation in races, unit types, difficulty levels, and maps make the gameplay very interesting and highly replay-able. Limitless strategies to consider! Only big problem is how spending hours on the game flies by.

Couple of things we could pick on but why bother. This is good fun and great value. Recommend.

This game is awesome for mobile, theres are tons of new factions with the Ageless Era mod. Very high replayability with lots of maps and factions.

We absolutely hate pay to play/win apps loaded with in app purchases. It is fantastic to find a game you buy once, and there is a ton of user-generated extra content/scenarios/campaigns for free download. If you like turn-based strategy games like X-Com, but also enjoy a fantasy setting, this game is for you. Thanks to the makers for breaking the mode of greed and not making this just another money-sink, pay-to-play/win game. This of us without countless dollars to waste on in-app purchases love and appreciate you and wish you great success in the future. Let us know about any other buy-once games you put out. We will happily support a company bucking the current greed trend, even if they are games in a genre or type we dont normally play we would still buy them just to support a company that cares about the players, not just their bottom line!

We cannot be happier with this download. Amazing for a free download, we would happily pay for an app that has given us this much enjoyment. We believe another review said it was like a mix between advanced wars and fire emblem and we completely agree. Great variety of campaigns and unit types, easy to jump in casually or get invested in leveling specific characters. Multiple difficultly levels and character leveling lends to replayability. But we do recommend saving often (especially on longer campaigns) so that if someone dies you dont want to loose you can reload an old save. Exceptional work!!

Love this game, it touches base on everything we enjoy. If you like turn based strategy games this is for you. One thing we find really cool is the in-depth history of each unit and race in the encyclopedia. Overall, a great game to play with some time to spare.

Fantastic game and finally pinch zoom is back. Thanks and great work on bringing mobile wesnoth up-to-date!

We’ve picked up this game so many times over the last decade. Every time we do, we get drawn back in at it becomes our fav. Simple design, user scenarios and campaigns F U N !

Thank you to the entire community for building this.

This game is engaging and fun. If youre on the fence looking for a new game to play we highly recommend you give it a shot.

We have been playing this game on desktop since probably 2002! It is very easy to get into, but the depths and strategy does not leave us wanting. The unit options and growth tree is excellent. You can play stories and scenarios vs computer or play online against friends. Theres nothing not to like! (except when you miss on your 75% chance to hit, haha)

Like Nethack, we love this game and Im terrible at it. So glad you made it work on iPhone. Thanks Wesnoth, inc!

Great game to just pick up and play. So much strategy involved in upgrading units and great campaigns. Havent even touched the mods yet and we’ve sunk countless hours into the vanilla game.

Why didnt anyone tell us this game existed? Probably because Im now addicted.

One of the better strategy games available on the App Store. Lots of campaigns with different feels to them. Immense strategy value.

We’ve really enjoyed playing through the campaigns and picking some more up from the free add-ons has added a lot of variety. The UI needs a little worksome of the words overlap. Id still give it 5 stars because of the community that just adds content and mods for free. Compared to other apps, if you like turn-based strategy and role playing, this is the best we’ve found. Lots of fun to be had in multiplayer with friends, too!

Loved the PC version. This one is just as good.

We remember playing this game in high school, in our CompSci class, on maaany many different Linux distros. We’ve already gotten many hours of fun playtime on this game and we cant wait to see what has been added/changed over the years. $4 is WELL worth the time we’ve already spent in this game; even if nothing has changed since our HS days, we are happy to pay the asking price. Long live open-source!

First of all, we love this game. But, there is one major problem that we want to say something about. It is that if your main leader dies (not hero, just leader. If you have two leaders, then just look on load game to see which on is your main), you cannot replay. If you try to replay, your main leader, or hero, or even your secondary leader, says his or her death dialogue. This is very frustrating when, having gone through 30 scenarios, finding out that you die when you had just about figured out the scenario! Im not sure if this is just a bug, or part of the game. Our friend has not experienced this problem, so it might just be our device. The main reason we are giving this five stars is because of the campaign Legend of the Invincibles. We think you should try this game, just be warned to be careful, especially in campaigns that are long. We also think that you should try the south guard as a learn the basics campaign, not a tale of two brothers.
