BattleLore: Command Reviews

Im really enjoying this game so far – just finished the campaign. A couple of ideas to make it even better: Add a new campaign or make the current one longer ;-) Please add an undo button for things like moving units or choosing a target unit when playing a lore card. Btw, for those considering getting this game, some people mentioned the dice being skewed – we for one think that theyre most probably blaming the dice for something which is in fact a lack of tactical skill… The dice are just fine.

We like it a lot but there should be a way to get expansions on the app to BattleLore.

We love tabletop war games and Fantasy Flight, so we love this app. People complaining about the game taking too long are clearly looking for a different kind of app. For iOS games it takes a long time, but for board game lovers it’s what you’d expect. The balance didn’t bother us, as the AI isn’t the best, so it seems fair that it would have certain advantages. It’s funny to us that some people think it’s too hard to beat. Again, they’re probably not tabletop dice game fans, as this is part of the experience for us. When so many games are dumbed-down these days, we like the potential to lose and refine our strategy. We beat the game the day we got it and continue to play. It’s too bad no one plays online, but solo gamers can play both sides or the AI. We’re hoping for more content to be released!

We enjoy the game mechanics and just purchased this on 7-27-2020. We should have payed better attention to other reviews that stated no save feature was given. This really hurts the game and if any Devs read this please implement a save feature soon. All in all its a great game.

Im wondering if you can still play this game online?

The game is generally fun to play, but theres no way to expedite opponents game speed in campaign mode and, without being able to save progress on half-played campaign levels, the game will occasionally turn off forcing to restart from the beginning of the level.

This game is good except the dice. Graphics good. Story good. AI good. Dice are awful. Unfortunately the dice is most the game. The last time we played we were protecting the cattle. Enemy goes first. There are five cattle to protect. Before we got a turn 3 cattle were dead. That is 9 his on 12 dice. Our turn came. We had 8 dice. We got zero hits. This is every game. It is no fun. Too bad. The board game is awesome. This is just work.

This is the best tactical skirmish wargame on iPad. It is a port of a board game hence the additional randomness of battles. But it adds to the fun as the game goes on both you and the computer make miraculous and disastrous die rolls. Best analogy is imagine only playing xcom’s battles but with fixed units. For those new to war games, this is like chess with dice. Though learning war game strategy may not be to everyone’s liking so maybe read the rules to the physical boardgame online before jumping in.

Awesome game. If you have played BattleLore then you will know how to play this. No set up required.

A great solid strategy game at last you a long long time without asking you for money every five seconds like a crackhead in need of a fix.

Updated review – 9/2017: Yes! We’ve got all the in app upgrades. This game has so much replay ability and they just made it IOS 11 compatible so we can update our iPad now. Thank you, thank you. Original review-Game plays very similar to the board game. Love the board game. This taught us the board game and strategy for the game. Only negative concern about warning comes up saying this app will not work in future versions of iOS because the dev doesn’t support it. We bought the we app so we could play the Uthuk. No bugs and got all the way through. Now play local multiplayer and solo mode. Everyone contact Fantasy flight and maybe they will update it.

We’re a fan of the boardgame , but was never into Terrinoh, the FFG’s fantasy setting for this game. Well now we have a better ‘feel’ for the flavor of this world, and therefore have enhanced the boardgame experience. This game uses the tried and true Allan Moon’s Commands and Colors game system, where activations, movement and combat are driven by cards. Great graphics, gret music. Awesome game.

Ok so we’ve got several things to say about this game but we’ll start with the title of this review….. QUIT CRYING ABOUT THE DIFFICULTY AND "BIASED" DICE ROLLS….. No matter what anyone else would have u believe, the dice rolls are COMPLETELY random, they go just as much for and against the player as they do the computer…. In fact they even explain this in detail as the randomness of battle, and actually it makes the game pleasantly challenging, if you people don’t like it go play our Little Pony Adventures….. Ok with that out of the way let us get to the meat of the review- the graphics, animations, campaign, multiplayer, etc.,etc.,etc., are ALL absolutely top notch, as others have stated this is by far not only the best game of in genre-but one of the best all around games for we devices, it is quite addicting and over the top fun,not only do u get a lengthy single player campaign including a very moderately priced expansion but u get a lifetime of awsome multiplayer fun after, we NEVER write reviews but can honestly say Fantasy Flight has a new fanboy for life, this game is light years better than the board game it was ported from and u assure that says a lot….. If u enjoy this genre of gaming we implore u to stop reading and just by the game…. We promise u will not b disappointed…. We have never been so happy about throwing our iPhone across the room and we mean this as one massive massive compliment, for a game this well put together and this challenging we just wish we could give it more than 5 stars, and one last time for all the haters of challenges—–1)log off 2) delete game 3) re roll as a fruity little pony and last but not least 4) /facepalm x 1 million cause u cry babies deserve it……. That is all ¡!¡

Picked up this premium game when it was on sale and finished the campaign over the weekend. We like turn base app games, such as panzer corp., WH quest, Xcom, civ., catan. … Etc. Got to add battlelore to our collection. This game is very fun and challenging. Some of the battles took us a while to finish. Always try to take out the viper legion first. Idon’t find dice cheating issue. Going to replay the game to unlock some of the battles and buy the extension to try the Uthukarmy. To us, this game is 5 stars!

Battlelore 2nd edition from FFG is an amazing board game and this iOS replica is just as polished. Graphics are great, action is smooth, we just wish it had an undo button.

Absolutely love this one. If you are into turn-based strategy this is a must buy. It even has a bit of the table top war game feel to it. We’re loving the single player campaign right now.

Just here to give a nice slow clap to your AI developer. clap. Clap clap When we safely nestled Baron to the backlines and prepared myself for a victory, little did we realize the little 2-man Uthuk archer would be wise enough to know he can still use the power of pinned to snatch Barons last 2 HP, even though the math was severely stacked up against him and there was plenty of other fresh meat around. >:) Great game, although it should be priced $199 since thats whatll cost you when you fling your iPhone across the room after these crushing defeats.

Really enjoying the game and graphics, despite having never played the board game. Please update the app so that we can save mid-game!

If we could give this game 4.5 stars instead of just 4, we would. There are just a couple of technical implementation issues that keep it from being a 5 for us. We just finished the main campaign, and we wish it had been longer. That’s not a complaint, we’re just saying we liked it. :) we didn’t track our usage, but we think it was something like eight missions, with a few branching paths so there’s replay value, each around 30-60 minutes. Nothing to scoff for the price, and $3 gets you an expansion campaign where you play as the Hor– err, the Uthuk (the villains of the main campaign), though we haven’t played it yet. Gameplay-wise, the most novel thing about BattleLore is also the biggest source of complaints we’ve seen, and we’re not sure how we feel about it myself. Instead of being able to arbitrarily select units to move, the field is divided into "lanes", and you have a finite set of cards that each let you move X units in lane 1, Y units in lane 2, etc, each of which can only be used once before you spend a round to "refresh". We really, really want to contrive some kind of battlefield logic to make this make sense as a mechanic… But we just can’t, and that’s what annoys us about it. It’s a contrived mechanic, and that’s that. But. If you can get past that, the thing is it actually adds an interesting and novel level of strategy to the game. Do we use a big movement now, or save it for later? Is now our best opportunity to refresh? We can’t justify the contrived limitations that the mechanic introduces other than to say that, at the end of the day, it was more interesting and fun than frustrating for us. We’ve seen some complaints about the "dice" being stacked in the AI’s favor. Most units only have a 1/3 per die chance of a hit in the first place (though there are other results that convert to hits if you position your units well), and having had our butt saved more than once by the AI whiffing a roll, we don’t think there’s anything to that claim, personally. There are, however, at least two things we would like changed: there really should be an undo button for mis-taps and "oh that’show that works!" moments), and even bigger for us, the game should really save state between turns instead of just missions. Get called away by Real Life and your device closes the app to free resources? Expect to start the mission over upon your return. Feeling like you can’t switch out of a mobile game is not great, and definitely our biggest complaint. Basically, this is a fun game with a novel twist, and though there are changes I’d like to see we think it’s well worth a purchase.

Nice game, but quite high difficulty on some of the scenarios. And what we wouldn’t give for some of the opponent’s lore cards!

Game is fun though the AI advantage is laughable. (And we did beat the campaign mode) It does make you think more strategic because you don’t have equal advantage going into battle. We can live with that. What we can’t understand is why we can’t have and undo function for commands and use of buffs we haven’t completed yet. We hate when we double tap a squad by accident on the move turn and they ends their move. Also, when you hit a buff by accident and you have to use it even if you haven’t applied it to a squad yet. If your going to give the AI a serious advantage at least give us UNDO for accidentals. Also, when we beat the blood sister in the last battle we don’t see her as an option in our army pool. Is this a bug or am we missing something?

We like the gameplay quite a bit, but the AI is very overwhelmingly strong. We also agree with some of the other players. 4 stages of play seem useless and the ‘pushing’ is unique and useful at time, but it drastically can hinder a particular units play. Also the ‘lanes’ are unique, but very limiting and also frustrating when we cannot use the one we need. Especially when the enemy practally knows the perfect action every time. Lastly a difficulty level would be nice. Want to play, but we will wake our kid with how angry we get!!!!!

We’re a huge, huge fan of iphone strategy games, and this one has polish, good AI and some very clever design decisions going for it. It really lacks variety though. There aren’t many units to choose from, and fewer that you’ll really want. It gives you powers in the form of cards to play, but pretty soon you realize you’re just seeing the same handful over and over. Overall the sense of the game is repetition. Expanded content and adding some interesting units and abilities could have made this a five-star imho.

Really? Can’t get past second battle. Absurdly unfair odds. AI always wins. Otherwise it would be awesome. We don’t mind a challenge, but this is just stupid. Update: Wait wait. It gets better. We try again, because we really enjoy tactics games and we want to be able to like this game. We finally start to get a slight advantage over the opponent. What does the AI do? It plays a defensive Lore that, after at least 6x replaying this same battle, we’ve never seen before: "move your opponents forces at random." Random our foot! It moved only the units that had Lore buffs and were about to defeat some enemies. We call SHENANIGANS! Update: Played two more rounds since last update and… Drum roll… FINALLY vanquished the enemy. Our trick: always double up your units to support each other and pin the enemy as much as possible. You get much more successful rolls when the enemy is pinned. The difficulty level is pretty high in this game, but we kept going back for more. We guess we like the abuse.

Im a big fan of Battledore as a boardgame, but not sure it translates well on the iPad. Tedious animations make gameplay feel sluggish, and as mentioned in many other reviews the lack of an undo for inadvertent lore selections is infuriating. We think its an especially bad fit for the iPad mini, where small screen size makes it look junky and hard to see when you zoom out to try to take in the whole battlefield.

This game could be perfect but the enemy "rolls" are far superior. We’ve gone 3 rounds in a row with all misses. So maybe it’s just our luck but seems it’s very favored to the bad guys in an unrealistic way. Other than that the style and strategy are awesome.

We just uninstalled this thing. What a waste of great graphics and a battle system. What kills it is the difficulty. It’s impossible. Our last battle went like this, 6 of our archer units fire in two rounds. We got one hit, one retreat. Four enemy units go and he gets six hits, a retreat and a poison. That’s how almost every battle goes. It took us six tries to get past round 2 of the campaign. It’s a joke. Difficulty is not adjustable either. That’s no way to design a game based on such a great board game. Unless they upgrade it, we won’t touch this again.

As others have noted the game skews dice results heavily in favor of the computer – we assume to make up for poor AI intelligence. This makes the game infuriating to play because your good positioning and strategy are negated when your units always miss and the AI’s always hit. Of course, they might also be doing this to drag out the time spent playing the campaign so that you will supposedly feel like you got more play time for your buck. However, playing the same scenario 15 times because you’ve been cheated out of victory doesn’t feel very rewarding. Fix the skewed dice rolls and this game may have legs, but leave it as is and you’ll alienate the user base.

If you hate your phone and have an extra $10 then we highly recommend this game. It will take your money then proceed to encourage you to break your phone in the most imaginative of ways! Seriously, the dice fall in favor of the cpu every time. Any win is a lucky win regardless of your strategy considering the cpu will likely wipe out your forces every match. We absolutely love this game and was really looking forward to the mobile version. We’re highly disappointed that we get maybe 2 kills in a match. Three on a good day. We’re deleting the app, but we’re not asking for our money back. Maybe they can use that money to make the game fair…

We usually enjoy fantasy flight board games, but not this one. The graphics and story art are great but the actual gameplay is not. Combat is broken into 4 sections. First one seems useless. Movement and combat are the meat of it. We REALLY dislike the way movement is done in this game. It limits your choices of what units to choose based on the battlefield being broken into left middle and right. You get to pick from a list of predefined cards of how many from each side can take action, and this gets exhausted until you take a turn refreshing it or pick another side to work on. There are some other special movement cards you can use, but this DOES NOT feel like it’s a strategic choice. It feels like a limitation for some unknown reason. Combat is not good either. When you fight, units can hit, miss, push, or get a rune action. The rune result feels like it should not be a result of combat. You can use rune powers on groups when you get enough, and they are cool, but the way you get them from combat is stupid. The push action is SUPER annoying. This means sometimes when your group can hit twice, instead it pushes away and can only attack once. So these two things combined in combat result in a system that is annoying. Combine that with bad movement and you get gameplay that is not enjoyable. The only reason we rated this as a 2 star is because the graphics, and art are good, but not enough to save this game. Don’t waste your $$$

Finally got around to playing it. Great graphics. Terribly conceived gameplay. Movement is key in tactics games. This breaks up the board and limits units by their placement on the board. This obliterates any strategy you come up with and rather than making it challenging, it makes the game annoying because you can’t actually execute complex strategies. Get XCOM instead. That’s a strategy game done well.

Not fun. Sorry, but even as an avid strategy gamer we can’t find the patience to even get through the first mission. As stated in other reviews, AI is rediculously overpowered. And, unless it’s part if the storyline, please don’t reduce our forces by 50% before we even get to go. Boooooo!

We play the actual board game and the dice results are actually pretty balanced. In the app version of the game the dice rolling is just plain broken. It’s really no fun to play because you miss 75 percent of the time. The AI only misses about 10 percent of the time. It’s really frustrating and not fun.

If you like playing a game that you cannot advance past the first battle, this is for you. It is terrible!

Now with online multiplayer, this is an excellent port of a classic FF game.

Really enjoy the game – great conversion to digital. It would be 5-stars if they were to add async play to it. It would go from occasionally being played to opened daily for multiple games. We have several friends who will not buy until there is async play – don’t let us down FFG!!

This is a fantastic port of an amazing strategy game, but there’s one thing that we really hope comes with the next update: saving. At the moment, exiting the game in the middle of a mission means having to start the entire mission over. Having a save feature or an auto-save feature that would allow us to resume missions would mean the difference between a game we can play on the go and a game we have to wait until the end of the day to play. This game is too cool to have to wait to play it :)

Having loved the boardgame, this was a must buy for us. Though we did hesitate a bit at the $10 price tag. The UI is very intuitive and really well done. Great sound, and graphics. The game is very hard though. And the "random" dice rolls still seem to favor the enemy greatly. Plus their lore powers, seem a lot more powerful than the ones you have access too. We’ve been playing the 3rd mission for the past 3 nights, and still can’t beat it. It is definitely a trial by fire, and we’re sure we will come out of it a better player (the digital, and boardgame version) but the process can be quite frustrating. It can be quite annoying when you are constantly rolling blanks, and the enemy uses a lore power and they are rolling 5-7 dice and always hitting at least half their rolls. Still a great game, and maybe after a pit more practice and tactical thinking, we will be able to roll over the AI, but we think that will take some time. We definitely recommend it to any fan of the boardgame. They did makes some changes to the way the command cards and some powers are played, but nothing too drastic.

Really like this game. We also own the board game but with this please please please give us the option to rotate the screen also after the first quest if we click on one of the flags it closes the app.

A great adaptation of the board game, very slick. We haven’t noticed the rolling issues experienced by others, we’ve been on great sprees before and so has the AI. It all seems to balance in the end and is actually random. Update: so they patched the game and it no longer crashes every time after beating a boss. Now it crashes every time at the next level selection. Ugh, come on guys! Since they did try to fix it and a crash before you have anything to lose is much less frustrating than at the end of a hard fought level, we’re going from 3 stars to 4. Please, please, please fix this game so we can finish it and give it 5 stars. Besides the crashes it is SO good!

Unbalanced play. Second mission is very difficult. Dice seem stacked on opponent side in campaign mode. Single Play is very unbalanced.

Crashes after the tutorial everytime on the ipad mini. Too bad, since it looks like a really good port.

This is a excellent port of a fantastic board game. Works perfect on our iPad Mini. Sweet graphics and lots of replay-ability. Now we can play Battlelore even when we cannot get the physical game to the table. Fantasy Flight Games needs to port more of there board games into apps. We would love to see a port of Descent.

Beautiful game. Yes it’s hard, but by tweaking our strategy we’ve been able to progress through the first four scenarios of the campaign. Well balanced, remarkably smart AI can beat you so our only complaint would be to why not let the campaign continue after a loss rather than having to wait for a win? Great job overall. Maybe our favorite war game this year. No complaints from us about unit abilities (although the enemy can devastate you) or performance on ipad 4.

This game is a steal at $10. We sold our physical copy because the setup and tear down took almost as long as the game itself. Having it on iphone/ipad is just awesome. This game is call-in-sick-for-work addictive. We’ve noticed some people who obviously dont know how to play effectively, complaining that the dice rolls are skewed toward the AI – they are wrong. We’ve won most missions on the first try. It helps that Im familiar with the system from the board game, but all the info is available in a very well laid out help section which can be accessed at any point during the game. This is currently the best strategy game for iOS in our opinion, and that includes X-Com, and anything from Slitherine, or Hunted Cow, etc, and we’ve played them ALL, including Uni-war, back when that was the best tbg iOS had to offer. Once you get a few missions under your belt and start to appreciate the Command and Colors system, this game is impossible to put down. The pace, and depth of strategy is spot on. Every single die roll" you or your enemy makes will have you holding your breath, just like the original. Absolutely essential for strategy gamers.

Beautiful game, brilliant design and strategy. We are extremely impressed. Deep, but not overly complicated, like many other similar board games ported to ios that we have given up on in this genre. This is what top-notch turn-based strategy looks like, and we highly recommend this.

We were so excited to see one of the boardgames in the commands and colors series ported to iOS. This is a great port and a really fun game. Those who complain about the dice rolls or difficulty need to become more familiar with how to play the game well to mitigate unlucky rolls, which is a big part of the the strategy for the boardgame itself. We hope this release leads to a port of this game’s cousin, Memoir ’44!

This game is a perfect fit for the iPad. The tabletop version is fun, but setup takes forever and theres a lot of bookkeeping on the iPad all that is done for you. The graphics are top notch and battles feel cinematic. If you havent played this before, be aware its a casual war-game, meaning a battle can take 15-30 minutes, which is lighting fast for war-games. But that offers far more depth and rewards real strategy. This is a great port. The UI can be a little confusing, but its not bad at all considering the complexity of the game underlying.

As a fan of the board game we are so glad to see this on iOS. Wish it would save the game state, not much fun to come back to a game and have to start all over again. We also long for a totally top down view, as well as a way to highlight all units on the board. Looking forward to playing and seeing the improvements as they happen. We are also interested in seeing the Battles of Westeros battlelore board game ported to iOS.
