What Makes Carcassonne – Tiles & Tactics Stand Out

New version of the multi-awarded board game. Now in 3D. Includes improved AI, 3D landscape, new exclusive features.

Carcassonne fits that opening game niche that every game group needs. -Tyler Nichols, Board Game Quest
Carcassonne = Great game, great mechanics, great pieces, great fun! -The Board Game Family

A TILE PLACEMENT GAME OF CREATING LANDSCAPES, CLAIMING AREAS, AND GAINING POINTS
Discover or re-discover Carcassonne, the multi-awarded tile-based game in which players draw and place their tiles to build a medieval city. Place your cities, roads, abbeys or fields to enlarge your landscape, then place your followers, the meeples. Knights, robbers or farmers… Each meeple will help you control your territory and win points.
But be careful, you will need all your best strategy and tactics to maximum your points! Place your tiles and your meeples wisely to stop your opponents and win the game.

6 EXPANSIONS: ENLARGE YOUR LANDSCAPE AND OPTIMIZE YOUR POINTS
Thanks to the mini expansions ""The River"" and ""The Abbot"", you can embellish your landscape and vary your game to enjoy new ways to play! Double or even triple your points thanks to the new buildings in the Inns & Cathedrals expansion! And with the Traders & Builders expansion, score more points with the trading commodities and build faster with the builders! Discover the city of Carcassonne covered with a blanket of white snow in the Winter Edition… and look out for the Gingerbread Man and the bonus points he'll give you! Beware of the Dragon in ""the Princess and the Dragon"" expansion! He could eat your Meeples if you're not cautious. And be kind with the Princess: she might prefer you to other Meeples and toss them out of the cities!

Player Experience Highlights

Community Insight:

We played the physical tiles, we wanted to try a digital one. Overall and, overall, its fun to play. We have some quibbles; we wish we could rename characters. Like, the one is AI you cant change it. So, our grade is: B to B+.

Finally downloaded this new version now that some of the issues earlier reviews had have been fixed (zoom and 2d mode). Overall our family feels this plays well and we have not gone back to the old version, except for the main reason we are giving it 4 stars and not 5…. Our wife LOVED the solitaire mode of the old app which is missing in this new version. The only other issue is when we play as a family, the player color does not seem to stick. For example, we are always green, our wife is always yellow, and our son is always blue. If we start the game we are green but the two of them end up being some random color. If our wife starts the game she is always yellow but then our son and we end up being a random color. Not a huge deal but after playing the physical version that way for almost a decade its a little hard to remember that you were a different color. Other than that, we are really enjoying the game and think the app is worth the time and money.

This version of the app seems fine, but it might not be as good as the PC/desktop version. During the end game scoring the camera didnt automatically pan or zoom so that we could see which items tiles were being included in the scoring. Overall it is passable but we think they need to make it zoom out at the end during the scoring step.

We have the old Carcassonne and play online with some of our children. It works very well, when you are notified of your turn the app opens quickly and it is just very quick and slick. This new app is NOT better/faster. Oh sure the pieces bounce and the graphics are more vibrant but the game play is SO much slower even with things turned off in settings. You do get a notification when its your turn but opening the app takes a long time. If you leave the app open and switch to a different app or screen or put your screen to sleep, opening the app takes a long time. Lets Speed things up please.

The previous license holders had it right. Perfect async play. Our friends and we would have casual games that lasted months sometimes. Cant do that with the game timer. And notifications? Forget that. Completely unreliable causing missed moves and games to timeout. What about the badging? Glad you asked. Ours has been stuck at 1 since we played a game online. All our games are done and we cant find anything in the app to read or view but nope – always at 1 – which also leads to missing when its your turn because you never know if the badge is real or not. We know this version is nicer looking but for a big studio we expected more. How did a small dev shop do such a great job for years and them this version come in with a head start from other platforms and fall so flat at what made the existing version great.

The app constantly has a 1 on it, indicating that we have a notification even when we dont. This doesnt change even when we do have a notification, so theres no easy way to see if its our turn on a game if we miss the pop up notification. The result is that games often time out. If we are not actively in a game when it ends, theres no way to see the results. It just disappears from our list as soon as it ends. The chat resets every time we minimize the app on our phone which makes it pretty much impossible to use. It would be nice for it to keep messages for the duration of the game.

Would be better if less time wasted drawing pretty graphics. Gameplay is excruciatingly slow.

The Princess and the Dragon is unplayable! You get halfway through the game and it freezes to the point where you can no longer play any tiles. Please fix or refund our money, we would love to be able to play this as its our favorite expansion! The rest of the game isnt too bad, but please work on this.

Someone please make a new app. This version is trash.

Ive never left a review of an app before in our life. However, this version of Carcassonne compared to the original version on the iPad is so terrible that we hope this gets back to the developers and they switch back. The attention to detail, the music, the graphics of the original Carcassonne on the iPad did such a great job of encapsulating the physical game. This is one of the few games that we could play with friends and leave on a table and really feel like we were playing a boardgame.

This is slow and clunky. Why cant we get the old Carcassonne back? It was our all time favorite game.

So disappointed. From reading reviews we thought the 4.99 would get us the bundle expansions. It only buys you the basic version. No rivers, inns, cathedrals, nothing. Just the generic version and you have to buy everything else separate. So disappointed.

How can you take one of the best designed mobile games (the first Carcassonne for iOS by the coding monkeys) and create a piece of junk like this? Asmodee should be ashamed of themselves. We only play this version when we have towhen playing online with friends.

The UI on this version is not good and makes it frustrating to play. If you enjoyed the old app, we dont think you will this version.

Due to unfortunate circumstances we lost access to the old version which as most of you know is an absolute masterpiece. We miss the music and simplicity and the true to board game design of the original. Had we not experienced the code monkeys version we would of rated this current desecration a solid 2 or maybe 3. They took the soul out of this game and replaced it with something manufactured and hollow.

Good enough interpretation of Carcassonne to be very fun and enjoyable. PROBLEM The computer gets stuck thinking forever sometimes during the river tile laying period. Only way out is to force quit. You might want to try a timeout. You surely have enough analytics to register and solve all these bugs, its not like you arent logging every single thing we do in the app. Please fix this is so annoying. Playing against Conqueror with Inns and Cathedrals, River (obviously), and abbot.

Gonna just boycott asmodee products now for ruining two great apps.

In our original post, we rated this one star for the many reasons others did too. We can back to raise that to a two maybe three star, only to find out our review is gone. Deleted. Hidden so others cant see it. Hence, we stand by our one star review.

We might just use the table top version it is sooooooooooo much better.

We have played more than 25 times and now suddenly cant log in, cannot reset password, cannot play. Is this some kind of scam to get us to pay over and over again.

The game was so simple and elegant under The Coding Monkeys direction. This version is clunky and slow with all the corny animations. Please renew your contract with the coding monkeys.

Please add controller support. We purchased a Backbone and it says that it will not work with this game. Otherwise, we love Carcassonne.

We were hesitant to purchase this game after reading comments that you cannot play with your friends easily and that it was confusing to navigate through the game, but we disagree. Our wife and we are extremely busy people, so we were thrilled when we found that we could set up a game that gives you 15 days to play (total time to get all pieces out), and that it does notify you when its your turn. For the first two games, we admit that it was difficult to get all the controls down, but now that we have them down, its perfect because it gives you every option possible, which of course results in more navigation problems. We highly recommend this purchase.

We dont see why people are leaving bad reviews. This game is easy to navigate through and everything is simply explained. Even more so if you have common sense. We have no complaints and we even got our friends to get it bc they thought the same.

Just got it despite reviews. We like the tablet version because the prospective issues dont come in to play as much. Seems like this game benefits in a lot of ways by being digital.

Ive had this game on phone and iPad for years. Ive had no particular issues with it, ever. Its a solid game that provides us with fun whenever we have the time.

5 stars easily because, we dont know how this game started out, but at the state it is currently in, it works fine, it is smooth, and it is only 5 dollars. The ratings are waaaay too harsh/critical of this game. If we were being honest we would say it is a 4 star game because it is missing some quality of life things, but it gets five stars because of everyone else.

We think this plays really well and is intuitive. We really would like to see the Abbey and Mayor expansion here. This is our favorite expansion and not sure why we cannot purchase it amongst some of the others. Thanks for considering.

The good: It is Carcasonne. The colors are bright, there are simple animations. It looks nice and plays fine on both our pc and our phone. It works with a ps5 controller fine. You can play local or online. Locally you can go up against a few other ai, you can set their difficulty. The bad: Mostly online issues. The server seems unstable. If you are playing multiple games at once and it becomes your turn in a different game, it has to reload the game you are in. Make your password easy to type because it logs you out often. You cannot add computers online! You cant change your icon. We suggest the developers make it so that you can choose an achievement to use as your icon since theyre already in the game and safe. This game has so much potential but the fact that it says last updated 4 years ago does not give us hope things will ever change.

We love it, but still no AI bots to add to online gameplay. Also the aggressive AI shouldnt always automatically get the tiles he needs, tile draw really needs to be random, kinda obvious he always gets what he needs.

How many people have to complain about the glitches and problems before the people in charge fix them? We cant send a private game invitation. And nobody can use the dragon without it failing, has anyone ever completed a game with the dragon? Please can someone explain to the people in charge that thousands and thousands of people love this game and we just want it to work better.

Game is great but last three times we have tried to play it crashes and cant play.

We want to love this appCarcassonne is one of our favorite board games. But after dozens (hundreds?) of games, we cant shake the feeling that the tile draw system is skewed in favor of the A.we. Im not talking about oh no, we lost a game frustration. We mean suspicious patterns: the A.we. Consistently draws the exact tile it needs to complete a city or block a move, while Im left with a graveyard of useless junctions and roads to nowhere. Its uncanny how often this happensso much so that we started keeping mental tabs. Over and over, the A.we. Draws clutch tiles like its reading ahead, while Im drawing like we offended the tile gods. Now, maybe this is just confirmation bias. Maybe Im cursed. But if the devs could shed some light on how tile draws are handled, or if theres any adaptive difficulty tweaking things behind the scenes, Id love to know. Because right now, it doesnt feel randomit feels rigged. Until then, Ill be yelling convenient! Every time the A.we. Miraculously completes yet another 20-point city in one draw.

Have not been able to complete a game invite for over a month now so game is useless. The app support for this app on apple App Store, now just links to a page wanting you to sign up for a newsletter, guess there is no support for this now :(.

…fields are not scored in 1 vs AI games. At least not for the player. AI opponents score fine. Always 0 fields for player despite clear claims. Fix and ill re-rate.

Ive been playing Carcassonne for several weeks and have been enjoying it greatly, until we recently realized it is counting the city points incorrectly. Giving much less points than it should. Not sure why this flaw but it makes us not want to play the game when it is scoring us incorrectly (in one match we counted 44 city points but only received 30). Please fix.

Needs local Bluetooth option to play with friends nearby.

Why though? The game costs money, cant you all come in and fix the issues ? Game never lets us rejoin any online games. Ive sent in support requests and Ive only been told its been forwarded on. We see people in the chat always complaining of the same. Its a great game and you have a community and all of us who download have to buy it- so cant you just get it to work properly? It feels like theft at this point. – hopeful Carcassonne addict.

Love the game, but the app constantly crashes and has for years. The developers clearly dont care. Also, they set it up to favor whoever starts a game so no one will join games. Ill log on and there will be no games so Ill start one, but no one joins and Ill check to see if there are any games and there will be 2-3 people with the same options and same rank all trying to start games instead of join. The developers are terrible.

We love this game and our partner and we play regularly. But the game does not assign tiles randomly. It skews heavily to whomever is playing blue or back – more monasteries, more coat of arms, etc. Should be easy to code that better.

The original version had all that was needed to emulate the tabletop game. Sadly, the animated map parallax and two-step scoring screens just dont add anything. We miss being able to control the zoom and view the whole board. Zooming back and forth as the AI opponents lay tiles is distracting and a little dizzying.

We love it, but still no AI bots to add to online gameplay with friends. Went down in ratings, because they havent responded to fans. Online game play is also wonky and cuts off. New expansions would also be nice too. Cmon its Carcassone! Do the game proud the way the Ticket to Ride app did we for their fans.

AI is stacked against player. We wish someone would make a game with truly random cards or dice.

Update: Ive tried but this new version just isnt as good as the old one and you cant download the old one anymore. PLEASE GO BACK.

The game is good, the menus could use an update but are otherwise functional. Whats not functional and is extremely buggy is logging in. You pay for an app that you cant even keep your login live for more than a single turn. Theres no integration with keychain either, so you have to get the password from the passwords menu, making things even more frustrating. Playing local is the easiest and frustration free experience, but defeats the purpose of the app. Adding friends is confusing. There are now turn notifications, which is great! Sometimes when you click on the notification you dont even have to login.

We love this game, but the app glitches badly and its frustrating. The dragon expansion seems to throw the most glitches, which is frustrating because its an interesting mechanic. The computer takeover option for a multiplayer game also fails sometimes and instead allows the opponent to move on your behalf. We really expected more for an app that costs money.

We love the game, but this app crashes, freezes, and malfunctions regularly. Im really upset and frustrated by it.

This game used to be fun but it freezes a lot where you cant move it and you cant see the area thats been built completely. Sometimes you cant enlarge it and see what youre doing either. When it works, we wish it had more tiles so it would last longer. When youre playing against the computer, its a real sshle. Its settings are basically hard or harder. It spends most of its time blocking you and merging with your cities instead of developing its own. It feels like a war instead of being fun. We win a lot but Im just tired of defending ourselves constantly. Im worn down. Id rather play against ourselves in another game than play against this computer.

Super glitch, signs us out on a daily basis. Now it wont recognize our user name and password and we cant get help to reset it.
