~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

The journey has been long, but finally you’re here in the heart of Glinhorn Forest at the edge of darkness. The people asked for a hero and they got you. Good thing you’re a hero.

Many stacks of cards lie before you filled with monsters, treasures, weapons, potions, and spells.

You can only see the top card of each stack — what lies beneath is a mystery.

Sometimes the cards you see are fearful monsters, fantastic treasures, or weapons you really really need, and you can take any of them… but there’s a catch! You must finish what you start.

If you take a card from a stack, you must eventually take all cards under it… and you won’t know what dangers (or treasures!) lie beneath the surface until it’s too late.

Every level in Card of Darkness is a slow reveal of a compelling and ever-changing puzzle, filled to the brim with risk/reward decisions.

But thats no problem for you — hero.

——A WORD FROM THE DEVELOPER

Over the past decade I’ve established a practice of making deep, compelling, and accessible games for people who don’t have the time or space in their lives to learn every intricate detail of every videogame.

I strive to take the best of modern game design and package it clearly and accessibly so people can enjoy new kinds of games they might otherwise not be interested in.

For years I’ve wanted to tackle roguelikes, a game genre where you battle through randomly generated worlds of monsters and challenges. It is one of the most complicated, inaccessible, — and incredibly fantastic — game genres out there.

Card of Darkness is my attempt to take some of my favorite moments from roguelike games, and distill them into a simple but deep card game.

It’s the streamlined design you’d expect from me, but this time layered with tons of stuff, just so much stuff! Well over a hundred unique monsters, spells, and upgrades. And art! Oh my goodness — the art! Beautiful incredible hand animated art from Pendleton Ward, Nelson Boles, Andrew Onorato and Evan Borja. Plus an incredible soundtrack from Stemage.

I honestly can’t believe I got to make this videogame with all these amazing people. This certainly wasn’t possible without the support and hard work of everyone at Choice Provisions. We all poured our hearts into this and we hope you love it.

I’m so happy to be able to present it to you — Card of Darkness, an epic adventure for everyone.

Cant change our old review so writing a new one we guess. We really enjoy this game. It is difficult with a lot of chance, but if you plan ahead you dont usually get forced into an impossible situation. Very fun. (Original review was 1 star after a bug deleted our save file – developer quickly put together a fix that recovers old save data and gave us access to the beta version of it!)

We are addicted to this game! We literally CAN NOT stop playing 100/5.

First off, we love this game! We’ve beat it and now Im playing the dungeon everyday but there are a couple glitches. For instance, when we were playing the Saturday dungeon today, sometimes a card pile wouldnt reveal dispute there being an empty pile next to it. And an even more frustrating glitch is when we use a slingshot and it just attacks the enemy like a sword would and marks the pile, often killing us. Please fix these glitches and thank you for this awesome game!!

There are an infinite number of bugs in chaos mode. Some days its literally unplayable. Its infuriating, especially because we love playing it so much. Please, please fix this amazing game.

This game is super amazing. Its so good that we finished it and now we wait for the daily games just so we can keep playing. Really hoping it gets an update sometimes or a few new levels!

Lol Im kidding This game was very entertaining Although we wish there wasnt a limit on how many darkness cards you could have Its pretty long, entertained us for a while. The twist at the end was cool.

Overall its a fun and challenging game at times. As much strategy as luck of the draw. Afterbeating the storyline it doesnt offer a lot unless you play the daily chaos realm challenges. Which are fun and can be incredibly frustrating due to random luck it seems. But we have noticed theres broken code and some of the cards consistently dont do what they say they do. Theres a multi shot slingshot that acts like a dagger and marks piles and just does the damage thats on the slingshot and then breaks and gives you damage or not just like a normal dagger. Theres also some monsters that sometimes dont behave like they say they do. Some cards say they do certain things on break vs pickup and we feel that they rarely do whats they say they do on break. But we also dont understand what they mean by break since the cards dont do anything beyond their number. Annoying but Im still playing the chaos realm challenges lost days.

Fun game, wish the story side was a little longer but finding that replays are fun when we need a quick distraction. Daily play in chaos realm is great but we are starting to notice bugs in the gameplay and it looks like the game hasnt been revved in almost half a year so not sure if these will get addressed. There is a big where slingshots play like daggers and often the auto-incrementing and decreasing cards get stuck.

Im loving the game. As a big fan of Adventure Time the art style is very appealing. As part of the next update could you please account for the iPhone 14 Pros magic island?

We have no idea what adjacent means so we are are very confused.

We really like this game, but the further you play the more you realize that beating a level isnt exactly about skill and more about luck. Its pretty unbalanced. Also it keeps freezing on us.

Lots of cool concepts here. Unfortunately, the execution is a little lacking. The grass swords never break even though theyre supposed to, the RNG can be pretty unforgiving, and some creatures combine with wolves which shouldnt.

Its super fun, hard but not angering. We were playing it every day, we were addicted. Until we stopped being able to advance much. We can still get more cards, can buy the first three scrolls in the shop, but there isnt anything more to work towards. It feels aimless, and we’ve had this game for at least half a year. There hasnt been an update in way too long, whats up with that???

We love the game, especially thinking strategy among hundreds kinds of Card. The problem is, it has so many cards so the game has many bugs, especially when so many effects of card mix together. For example ,the Nettle card, you say lose thorny at value 1,but the truth is sometimes we reduce 1 heart and sometimes reduce 2 with our sword when value of Nettle Card is 1.

PSA devs: games are supposed to be winnable. Not entirely based on luck and extremely hard for no reason. It has a lot of potential but as is, its not fun. The cards you collect are mostly pointless and the items you can buy to help you are useless and overpriced for the amount of coins you earn. The second boss is unbeatable. Normal levels you get multiple lives to get through each section but the boss has three sections and you only get one shot. With very few weapons or health while constantly being cursed. Whats the point?

But then it just turned out to be all luck of the draw and not enough strategy. As one reviewer says, its like a slot machine & the odds are stacked against you. If you could build a deck or purchase items that actually gave a winning strategy itd be better butIll likely delete it soon.

Absolutely unfair levels, even at beginning. Design and music is great, which makes us want to keep playing, but the balance (of that word even makes sense here) is completely off. Multiple levels that start out with all enemies and no weapons with no sense of where weapons just makes us want to uninstall this game.

We really enjoyed this game, but there are so many bugs its become unplayable. Im deleting it and not wasting anymore time. The monster mechanics dont work as they are described on their cards, and frequently we would have to close out of the app to finish a level because the cards and screen would freeze. Theres just no excuse for this, its not a new game.

You have to get lucky at later levels to win, less a draw puzzler more a slot machine. Very Grindy. The art is excellent.

Not a fun game. Relies too much on rng to beat levels.

Cannot make it past the first world due to difficulty.

The games random, challenging nature is somewhat fun, but glitches keep erasing our data forcing a restart from the tutorial. We wouldnt suffer through wasting your time on this game as youre likely to have your progress wiped at random intervals.

Was the BEST game enter, until last week when our two saved games were deleted. With our previous progress in the chaos realm (which takes weeks to build) we dont have the desire to start all over again. Very sad.

This is the worst game. There is no strategy. Basically you just tap squares until you die. The instructions are useless. But basically there is no way to beat a level. And there is no help on the internet. Nobody can win at this game. Cause its garbage.

We’ve enjoyed this game for a few years now. Today when we went to play, it was like we were playing for the first time again. It sent us to the very beginning. All of our progress looks like it has been lost.

Great game. Love it. Played daily for a solid 2 weeks. Was really grasping idea and how to play effectively. Go on to play today and game reset. Nothing saved. Our Mac still has the game saved at that level, but reset completely on our phone. Now the really annoying part is we’ve restarted maybe 4 time now today alone. Just from trying to attempt the daily challenge. Once we play it, it resets our game. Not sure how many more times we can restart before we just dont play anymore. Need to fix asap if you wish to retain players.

Let us start by saying we love playing this game. Its a great casual pop in and play kind of game. Once you have completed all the levels you move onto the chaos realms. We love this. What we dont love is that twice no we have had it fail to sync our progress only to reset our entire game. We cant do it again. We dont want to invest all this time to only lose it after a failed update or sync. Thanks for the memories.

Aaaand now our save disappeared with the latest update. Thats like a year of progress. Any chance the devs/Apple Arcade could get on that?

We honestly love this games concept and style but wish that it was a little more fair. We have seen some of the others reviews and completely agree. There are sooo many times that we have calculated a risk but then the board gives us 10 enemies that all will kill us. There is simply no room for skill and it is just a luck game at base. Such a shame. Even the cards themselves are based on luck. You might reveal a 3 headed wolf and it absorbs all the enemies around it and all of a sudden its got 67 health points. This is very frustrating if you are far in the level and there is literally no way to beat it.

We’ve been playing this game for over a year now. There have been constant issues with the chaos realm ever since the introduction of the prestige realm. The last week things seemed to be going as expected and we were excited for the possibility of of all the issues being resolved. Until we logged in today and found all progress we’ve made completely lost. Again. The concept is wonderful and if this game functioned as expected we would be elated, but we cant keep wasting our time having this break and starting over.

All sorts of bugs (weapons not behaving in accordance with type is the most frequent) that make game play unpleasant. The Chaos Realm is the best bit of the game but also the buggiest. Wish this game had more ongoing developer support.

We’ve been playing every day for months on the daily dungeon and completed the whole story. We woke up this morning and everything is gone. Our game account still has the achievements, but theres no in-game progress anymore. What the heck happened?

We were enjoying the game and made a lot of progress (8th section) and decided to play the chaos realm. We beat the level and it reset all of our progress on the main map. ALL PROGRESS GONE. So close to beating it and a bug ruined our game.

After dealing with "syncing to icloud" for several weeks, making it impossible to purchase new cards, now our game is wiped. All our data for two different game plays is completely gone. What is going on over there? You’re seriously going to delete our data?

We’ve been obsessed with this game ever since we got an Apple Arcade and play it religiously every single day its the main reason we’ve kept our Apple Arcade subscription. But today, out of nowhere our game deleted itself?!?! When we first opened it it took us to us usual: the daily challenges (I bought the story line ages ago) and knew something was off because it said we had zero coins and zero of those specially blobby things. We force quit and restart the app only to be prompted to choose a language and then it makes us do the tutorial. We kept exiting out, force quitting, and even restarted our phone. Didnt fix it. We finally went through with the tutorial and exited the game as soon as we were able. From the menu we saw that our year+ game was completely gone!! We hope apple can fix this otherwise Im canceling our subscription. Im so freaking angry right now.

We have a fun time playing this game but every time we go into the caos realm and then back out it resets all our progress making us play all the way back to the tutorial we dont know if its just us but if it can be fixed would really appreciate it.

We have an Apple Arcade subscription, but we mostly just use it to play this game. We find it a deeply satisfying accompaniment to our morning coffee. The challenge varies every day, sometimes its simple, sometimes its super difficult, and sometimes you do something utterly stupid and sometimes you do something absolutely brilliant. But even on days when you die quick, you always make forward progress some coins to put towards buying a new special card with a new special ability that will help on the next hard problem. Life doesnt entitle you to an guaranteed win for a given amount of effort. But losing is almost as much fun as winning in this gamethe one thing it does guarantee is you dont know what will happen today.

Very cute and simple game mechanics that can pose some challenging puzzles. We discovered a bug that soft locks: when an enemy is revealed that randomizes the other monsters it created one that required our next action, we then used a potion on that stack and could no longer interact with any stack. Using options – quit displayed a black screen of death. Had to force close. Bugs like the one described above are not all that game breaking because you just have to attempt the node again, which youll be doing a lot anyway!

We’ve had this game for a couple weeks now and have had a lot of fun exploring it. We also adore the art style it has a bit of an Adventure Time, or Rick and Morty vibe to it. We never know what Ill see next, and Im down for it.

Incredible game. Super challenging but also engaging. You get frustrated but not too much. Its fun to look at and fun to play. Whimsical and hardcore at the same time. Easy to play, hard to master and all that. Our only complaint is with the scrolls implementation. The vast majority of scrolls are random. Easily less than 5% of the scrolls we’ve seen had a single dedicated use. We’ve reached the sea floor level and scrolls are still little better than useless, mostly because we were never given a fair shake at even learning what they each do. Want to improve this game? Make each scroll do one thing and one thing only. That way we can incorporate them into our gameplay. Im not a chess grandmaster here, sheesh. Currently we just cross our metaphorical fingers and faceroll all our scrolls when Im dead in the water and have literally no other options left. It has worked, like, once. Thanks.

Can’t get passed level 2 great game.

Genuinely one of our favorite mobile games we’ve ever played. Sometimes extremely hard as the levels are randomly generated but overall we thoroughly enjoyed it. Only major complaint is HOW SHORT IT IS. We need this game to be 4 times longer. Hoping for new levels!!

Spent like an hour trying to beat level 1, we guess its not for us lol.

We enjoy this game. A bit short however the daily chaos realm levels are fun. Would be a lot more fun if the game EVER synched with iCloud. Only time it ever happens is the day after an update.

Put more than two item slots its so annoying this game is too hard for what it is. The coin system is broken – there are three things to buy after youve bought everything else and theyre all less than 100c. We have 6000+ and you can only hold two items.

Another fun game from Zach Gage. We’ve played it all the way to the end and have started again. Suggested improvements: 1) you need a full guide that explains all of the monsters, potions, weapons, and cards. Example: the card that says no hoarders. We’ve played the game to the end and have no idea what a hoarder is. 2) There are no cards or other defenses against curses, which is unfair on boards where those cards are unavoidable.

Like others have said, it quickly turns into a game of luck, not skill.

This is really fun for a few weeks. Then it starts to get tedious.

Theres a ton we love about this game, the artwork, the music, and the core idea of the gameplay is wonderful. But man the type of difficulty that is generated by the random arrangement of cards is so not fun for us. Sometimes a level is a breeze and other times, it feels unfairly tough – you did everything right, you played smart and then a random crazy difficult stack of cards is blocking your way and takes you out. And then you try again and poof, its quite a bit easier. We really want to love this, but Im moving on.

We’re stuck on this game, we love it… But it’s nearly impossible to win so please make a save option.
