Catan Universe Review
Its great for boredom, when you dont have patience for real people you can play any scenario against varying levels of computer without the timely set up of the board or the eons of the set-up phase IRL.
Our good pal Mason introduced us to this game when we were a low place in life. We binged it for hours every night for a few months. Some may think thats excessive, however it brought us joy and reminded us that life is about making the best out of times. Thank you for to the developers and everyone involved in creating the iPad version of this game. May God bless you and your families :) xoxo.
Ok it is a little buggy but overall all things considered it works great. This Catan team is always making improvements and continues to work hard and make the game smoother. Im really happy to have this Catan outlet and dont know of any better place to play Catan except in real life. Would recommend!
The last two updates have resulted in us not being able to login. Eventually, last time, we created a new account with a different email. Now it has happened again. This is definitely our favorite game, in spite of the bugs that pop up, but this is so frustrating!
Once youre in a game, you cant leave the app for even 10 seconds otherwise you risk dropping connection. Wildly frustrating and something every other iPhone game does better with Connection Issues: getting kicked out of games because of server issues is frustrating, and it usually comes with a huge decrease in ELO & Karma ratings ELO Ratings: very hard to track which games are bumping it up/down because it rarely shows updated ratings at the end of games Online Catan is fun though, so Ill give it 3 stars.
This game is almost unplayable anymore because of the dice rolls distribution is not statistically accurate. Its common for 3, 4, & 11 to be rolled as much or more than 5, 6, 8, or 9. Conversely, its common in these games for a 6 or 8 to be rolled the 3rd or 4 least frequent. Before this problem, this used to be such a great game. Please fix this and we will change our review to 5 stars.
We love this game. Like play it all the time but it double charged our wifes account and she never got any gold, but it charged our credit card. Secondary issue, we spent $10 on gold, played a lot and worked. Then one day it logged us out, we resign in and Im level 1 and have none of our packages, we purchased! Wasted so much money on this game. Its a great game but takes money can anything be done ?
The game is buggy and has issues with robbing your money that your forced to pay just to play the basic game. On top of that the expansions are just plain poorly balanced, from the gold mines deciding the entire game in the ships update to the fact that the cities matches are decided on the first barbarian raid. Its just poorly built, balanced, and maintained. Bad game, bad devs, bad deal.
Ai is against you, knows your cards and plays a 7 everytime You place a knight. Only rolls numbers their settlements are, etc. Fraud.
THIS GAME IS A SCAM, IT SAYS YOU CAN PLAY OFFLINE BUT THAT IS NOT TRUE. EVEN AFTER YOU PURCHASE THE GAME AND EXPANSIONS YOU NEED TO BE LOGGED IN, TOTAL RIP-OFF.
Really publishing a new version and within minutes requiring users to update?! Do they know how anything works or are they intentionally killing their product?
The game is full of bugs. The software team has no idea what theyre doing. Like a bunch of high school kids trying to make an app.
The game has become very unreliable in recent months. Many bugs. Lots of server connectivity issues. Its sad and frustrating.
The game is great, but it often requires you to enter a password – and if you lose it then youre locked out and the reset doesnt work. Therefore we cant access anything in the game we’ve purchased or play it.
Our girlfriend and we cant even add players to a match and it says failed to get groups: ERROR and kicks us out. On both devices. Then we arent connected to the server. Optimized for sure. sarcasem
Since the recent update of just 5 hours ago we havent been able to complete one game. It gets hung up on a play and they cycles through their time x 3 and tells us Im timed out because of inactivity. Please fix so we can get back to playing one of our favorite games!
Our phone and the app are completely updated. We deleted and reinstalled the app. It has been rendered completely non-functional by the latest update. (May 2023)
Fine for multiple players but need one for regular player VS computer. Scenarios are stupid unfair, one after another of crazy plays. Just have regular rolls for players vs computers. Playing with multiple players takes too long and sometimes we just want a quick game without waiting on others.
Title says it all- as of 5/24/23, new version doesnt support iOS/iPhone. We open app to try to log in, wont work- cool, the instructions say we need to update to the latest version. Head over to the App Store we HAVE THE LATEST VERSION we just wanna play this game man. Why is it so hard to do that? Maybe this is a side hustle for the developers which is why there are always issues- bugging out constantly, log in EVERY TIME is a hassle for those not interested in chat feature Id gladly pay $5 just to avoid these issues.
Update: the issue with the king card was resolved the game still needs to be simplified with the controls but none the less its a great game with developers who are making consistent adjustments and updates. We highly recommend! The game is good until it comes time to place the king card once that happens when you click it your finger is able to drag it around the screen but it wont place, when you remove your finger from the screen the king card goes back into your deck. They need to just make it a button to press verses dragging it its to complex and needs to be simplified. If this gets fixed then honestly the game would be worth 5 stars but it ruins the game play entirely so its our ranking is 3 stars until this problem is fixed. We did look online but could not find anyway to place the king card so Im really hoping for an update that addresses this issue. Its a game with great potential!
We hate this game – we can’t stop playing it! Our only complaint is that the most victory points you can play to is 14. We play this for hours; we’ve lost count of how many games we’ve played. 14 VP is definitely not long enough! 20! 30! Of course, our D&D dungeon master told us about this. We still haven’t forgiven him.
Updates have happened and all seems good! 5 stars.
There was an update today, and now the trades dont work, sequencing is off, glitchy when it was fine before that update.
The game is great but we use the free version and we think you should add a way to play more games a day by watching ads. Right now we have to wait 12 hours to play another game. Even if Id have to watch 3 ads pre game Id do it.
Great game! One improvement could be making it possible for 2 friends to play against each other instead of the current 3 player minimum.
Love this game. Team does a great job of addressing bugs. Current bug is if you are playing single player, the computer will offer a trade and move on before you can decide to participate or not. We believe it is only when not connected to the internet as we found it happened when airplane mode was on while flying.
The app is great but rivals is our favorite Catan game to date. It would be great if more expansions (age of darkness, Age of Enlightenment) was available to play than just the base game.

There is lot of issues happening with the connection. It will give error pop up when creating a custom match or else it says can not reach server atleast one time a day. Sometimes we wont be able to see friends list to create game. Once there is server connection issue, the game stops working for few hour. Other than this connectivity issues the game is awesome.
Idk if its just us but since the update its been taking a while to look for other players online. Plz fix.
When playing against the AI if you have two hexes with, say, 6s, you can bet that 5,8,9 will get rolled way more than 6. Even with card stack. And if you get resource monopoly often a bunch of 7s will get rolled so you dont know what to steal. And if you get dominant with knights, suddenly lots of blue cards appear and you get 3 of your knights deserted in short order. And yes, if the robber is on your good resource it often stays there for an improbably long time due to a lack of 7s. Write more intelligent AI instead of cheating.
Works great. Love the design of the UI compared to other apps. It seems a little biased on the Robber. Always seems to roll a 7 just when we get over the card limit. Maybe its just bias. But maybe also a little bit of cheap programming. Also if we leave the app, then come back to a single player came, the computer opponents no longer wait for our response for a trade. Definitely a bug. They will just offer it and it disappears faster than we can respond.
With the new version, wait time for multiplayer match has increased considerably. And, this gets frustrating when you cant find anyone to play online.
Fun game, love Catan. Higher difficulty AI just means that its weighted against you, rather than the AI making more intelligent decisions.
This is a fun game. But since mid-2022, development has changed and/or server capacity has changed. It takes 20 minutes and many, many tries to start the game in multi-player mode. Sometimes even that will not work. This company needs some serious development and server expertise to evaluate server issues. When that is improved, this game will get a 5-start rating.
We are new Catan and wanted to get into the game. Used this app and it isnt too bad but multiplayer isnt an option since no games are ever found. Not an issue for us as we are still learning playing AI, however there is no reason all the AI should be robbing us consecutively when we have 4 VP compared to the AIs 8 VP. Always teamed on by the AI even when we are dead last in the position, makes it hard to develop strats and allows the other AI to run away with the victory.
This game is so fun, but if theres a bug or a glitch it will last for so long. Right now theres a glitch where you get at least 2/3 through the game and then it freezes. So frustrating.
This game definitely could be better with the AI system but it does get the base aspects of the game.
We love this gameToo bad this game is rigged. How can you explain the same numbers rolling 4-6 times in a row anytime we play with an AI. Never happens when you play with friends. We even tried picking the same numbers the next round but funny how then the numbers change and always in favor of the AI.
It fun and just enough frustration but the map doesnt change and sometimes we cant see what people are trying to bargain for or with.. The bid comes up incomplete and its annoying because we could prob have used the stuff they want to bargain with and have to look like a jerk for not trading when we need to..
No matter what setting we have the game on the tiles never change. Our only complaint.
The game is a bit buggy sometimes and the app charged us twice in the store for the same item.. Annoying at times but seems fun at least.
We have bought several games in it however whenever try to play, it shows server error or some other problem. It is hardly the case that we are able to play in multiplayer mode with friends. Very bad service.
Would be great but it constantly says there is an issue connecting to the server and its not our internet. Happens to our friend all the time too.
Tried to create an account to unlock features. Tried several times. Finally got to a verification code and no email and servers had no room and it told us it could not. We tried to buy gold to u lock a different board game and it never showed up in our account. We like the game but so buggy and unfortunately needs more work.
Currently not working, even after updating. To be clear, we love this game. We play it all the time. But ever since they shut the game down and switched to different servers a few months back, its been very glitchy and frustrating to play. As of this writing it wont let us even connect to another player. Also, they need to make the CPU a little harder, or at least not making idiotic moves. They make head-scratching decisions on the hardest level such as letting their stockpile build up to like 20 cards without making any moves, or building roads to nowhere or into a blocked path.
Could you add save password or face login please?
We have rarely played a game thats this buggy. The app has periods of functioning and malfunctioning for a long time now, and our friends and we really regret having paid the extension packs. It is unfortunately the best Catan online game out there still, that is if you catch it on a good day.
