Chef League – Simulation Game Review
![]()
Chef League is a Simulation/Education game from Ames, LLC, first launched in 21st May 2019.
It’s rated 4+ and currently has 31+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Chef League Stand Out
Flavor is a language! Do you speak it? This gamified app lets you have fun being creative, while learning to freestyle with flavors without a recipe. Get inspired by other players' flavor fixes and learn from pro chefs.
Soon you won't need recipes to invent and improvise delicious dishes. The game was created by an indie game designer and professor at Harvard University who studies how chefs become fluent in flavor and taste.
COMPETE TO BUILD THE BEST DISHES
- Compete with others in Recipe Challenges to imagine the best way to improve recipes and top the leaderboards.
- If you beat other chefs, you get to steal their premium ingredients
- Try to impress the in-game chefs and/or win community votes
LEARN TO BECOME FLUENT IN FLAVOR & MORE CREATIVE
- If competition is not your thing, it's easy to just play to relax and be creative
- Improve your flavor fluency by testing your taste memory in Ingredient Challenges
- Discover new ingredients, recipes, and trends
- Learn from the pros through real chef reviews and flavor quiz feedback
- Vote on top creative fixes and discover new tricks from our community
- Work toward building your 'cookbook'
In each challenge, a real chef review gives you clues for what's wrong with a dish. Maybe it needs something salty, rich, sweet, crunchy, or spicy. Compete against two other players and choose an ingredient to improve the recipe. There are two ways to win a Recipe Challenge. The main way is by getting votes from other Chef League players. The second way is by impressing the "AI Chefs" algorithm, which was built based on a million chef reviews of real recipes.

Community Insight:
We feel like this will be fun and slightly improve our cooking skills, but the UI on our IPhone 6s makes the sliders exceedingly difficult to slide. We have to try to grab them roughly 12 times before we can move it. Id also prefer FB Login not be required. We dont have an account and wouldnt want to share our info anyway. That said, we dont play many games on our phone, probably 3 in the past 13 years, but we may continue playing this.
We were really looking forward to use this app, but we just keep getting connecting errors and went to their site and there is no support email either.
We have had the game for some time now, we have waited for them to work out their issues, however, every time we go to play, it always has an error.
Seriously? Why is Facebook login the only option?! Deleted right away. Shame because it looked fun.
We absolutely love playing this game. We are finding new ways to use our favorite ingredients and we love beating the chefs.
Great way to learn what ingredients go together. Beautiful design. Highly recommend.
Made the train ride tolerable. Didnt want to reach destination. Thanks for this fun game.
Our husband is a really good cook, making ridiculously good stuff from scratch…but when we try we just dont seem to have an idea of what belongs with what unless we follow a recipe and it really frustrates us. We really like that this app is a game but that underneath, its really teaching you some cool stuff about what things make sense together so you kind of get your own intuition you can apply in the kitchen for real. Cool stuff.
Chef League is butter and simply radishing, steaking its claim among the best! Orange you gonna try it.
We had no idea we could be so entertained by picking ingredients to make our mark on dishes! Deliciously addictive.
A fantastic idea and execution. This app will inspire you to try new ideas in your kitchen.
So much fun! We had no idea that improving food would be so addictive. Give it a try.
This is empowering! We can experiment with ingredients without the stress and waste. Loving learning about the power of ingredients, one step at a time. Shooting for 5 stars.
We are learning so much about flavor, having fun and cooking better all at once.
Great game. Very fun and engaging. Made us realize this whole new sense dimension we did not know about. Thanks.
Most of the dinners we cook at home need a chef to be salvaged. After playing through about 50 Chef League challenges, we can not only determine whats wrong with our own meals – but we now have news ideas about how to actually fix them.
Chef League allows us to put our cooking knowledge to the test and access our competitive side. We feel like we are on one of the cooking competition shows we watch all the time. We love when we win, but am even more motivated when we lose because we know we can do better! If you love to cook like Id do, this is the game for you! Youll have fun and even improve your cooking knowledge. Other bonuses – the design is really beautiful (who doesnt want to look at beautiful food all day?!), its simple to use, and the user experience is great.
With a few tweaks, this game could be groundbreaking. But right now, it has two major flaws. First, the AI isnt completely accurate. We understand taste is subjective, but it doesnt recognize or credit classic pairings, and awards flavor profiles that just dont work irl. And the game itself doesnt offer enough free play to be immersive, so we cant imagine it ever being a pay-to-play for us.
