A Glimpse into Choice of Alexandria

Change the course of history! Can your scientific discoveries save the ancient Library of Alexandria? Will you defend the empire’s legacy, or your own?

"Choice of Alexandria" is an interactive novella by Kevin Gold, author of "Choice of Robots." Your choices control the story. It’s entirely text-based–90,000 words, without graphics or sound effects–and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

The year is 245 BCE; you’re a heroic polymath librarian, invited to Alexandria to tutor prince Ptolemy IV. The real Ptolemy IV fell under the sway of his evil advisor Sosibius, and brought the empire to ruin–but perhaps under your tutelage, things will turn out differently.

Or disregard your responsibilities to focus on inventions instead! With the help of Archimedes and Euclid, you can discover the steam engine, the germ theory of disease, or even robotic automata, thousands of years ahead of schedule.

Will you deplete the libraries of other cities to enrich your own? Achieve popularity for your scientific inventions, or protect the legacy of the empire? Will Ptolemy IV grow up hedonistic and selfish, or wise and just? Will you be ransomed by the pirate queen Nefertari, or can you win her over with your silver tongue?

The fate of the city of wonders is in your hands!

  • Play as a brilliant inventor, a gifted speaker, or a life-saving doctor
  • Make great discoveries while protecting Prince Ptolemy IV from manipulators at court
  • Save famed mathematicians Archimedes and Euclid from untimely deaths
  • Based on the real life of Eratosthenes, ancient genius who calculated the size of the Earth
  • Save the Great Library and invent the steam engine two thousand years early!

Really fun beautifully written.

Its short, funny, and full of good writing. Theres a certain style of the writer where hes able to get you attached to these characters in so little time. We were genuinely proud of Ptolemy IV turning out a great leader, and Gold definitely has an affinity for stories about mentorship, parental figures, etc. Well done!

One of the best choice of games out there, loved the multiple ways of attempting to manage a legacy of an ancient Greek-era empire, using character references from our actual history!

In addition to being well written with compelling characters, CoA tacks hard towards showing the impacts; short and long term; of the protagonists choices. We love it!

We love the choice games for letting us play as our gender. This one lives an entire life in a fascinating city. What will you do with your life?

This was very well done, The story was very well written and we enjoyed it greatly. The only complaint we have is the ending was a little bit rushed however you cannot ask too much for two dollars. It really does have a great replay value since there are many outcomes to the game. We cannot believe that someone rated it one star just because the author wanted payment for his work.

We’ve done several of these text-based choose-your-own-adventure-story-games, and this was by far the most interesting and best so far. It was so good, in fact, that we didn’t mind being charged for the rest of the game after the first chapter. It was definitely worth the cost. It would have been better to be charged from the start, we think. The story is great, and the options tend to be more logical, and the results of our decisions made more sense than in other adventures. We feel we stumbled on a little gem here. Bravo!

Another great text-based adventure.

This game is really cool, with creative and branching paths. Totally worth it.

We really liked it! It creates a great sense of place and has a very good replay value!

Choice of Alexandria is the second game written by Kevin Gold, the first being the widely acclaimed Choice of Robots. Both are incredibly rich interactive novels that reward multiple playthroughs. Alexandria is worthy of our highest recommendation.

A fun way to learn history by living it. The story gives you many choices, sometimes all good, all bad, or mixed. There is no way to foresee the outcome until the end. Each replay gives you a chance to explore another path. The authors of these games demonstrate that imagination and a good story make an unbeatable combination.

At the moment, though we have only gotten through the first chapter, this story seems to be great and well put together and we eagerly look forward to reading more. Though there does seem to be some disappointment that this story cannot be read for free, we honestly cannot see any issue with that. It is not unreasonable to expect payment for a story, there are plenty of free stories out there and there is no reason to rate a story poorly on the basis of it not being free. At the moment, we look forward to reading more and seeing where this goes. Hopefully, there will be other reasonable readers that understand that it takes a lot time and skill to craft an original story, and it’s not wrong to charge money for a service.

We really loved this game! We really can’t weight until the next game is available!! We are pumped that we were able to learn about Choice Of Games!!! . We love you guys!!!!!.

When we read the summary for this game, we believed that it would just be another game that we played as long as it was free, but we ended up buying it for $2.99. The story makes you feel like you are the character much better than any other choice game we’ve played. It combined real history, fictional speculation, and a bit of well timed humor beautifully! We’ve played the game 4 times over, and we still want to explore more paths and branches. Overall, we would say that for the price, it was worth the 3 bucks for such an excellent experience! 6 stars!

We don’t mind paying for excellence and this is a wonderful adventure , please write more it’s so lovely!

We don’t usually try to get all of the endings in these games, but we couldn’t stop in this. We find it wonderful that it shows how the character shapes the outcome in the end. This is a truly wonderful game by the man who made the equally wonderful game, Choice of Robots. Myself would love it if you made another historic choice game in the future.

The writing is absolutely gorgeous, no surprise as the writers previous work was also excellent. Not sure why people are complaining about paying, perhaps this is their first purchase from this company? We would ignore reviews about that as they have no relevance to the actual story – which is very well written and full of lovely details that captivate you and keep you invested. Our favorite entry thus far. Great job!

We’re normally suspicious of the shorter choice of games due to replay value, but we’ve played through this 11 times already and we still enjoy it.

We played the first chapter online, and after falling in love we decided to buy the full game. Honestly, it was so well worth it. It’s a short, but very complex story. One little choice and your whole ending is changed. As we played through the first time we wondered why we were enjoying it so much. We came to the end and realized that the author, Kevin Gold, also wrote another one of our personal favorite COGs- Choice of Robots. If you liked Gold’s style in COR; you’ll really enjoy this novel. We’ve played COR multiple times and still haven’t unlocked all of the Achievements. We played this one for roughly two weeks, lightly we may add, and was able to unlock every achievement. We still like to replay it though, because we enjoy the over all story.

We liked the characters and setting very much. Your choices are important and you are given a reasonable amount of choices. It was interesting that the game ends with your lasting impact on the world, and we really liked finding out how far into the future we affected the lives of others.

This game was one heck of a lot of fun. Knowing (all of) the history that runs like a thread through the story, we played it very pedantically and wondered about what replay value this would have. When we replayed the first time, we were tremendously thrilled to see very high replay and couldn’t put it down until we got all of the possible endings and achievements. This is well worth the cost of the game!

This is a really intelligent and moving story, and its exciting while also thought provoking. It makes you realize your life matters and that you should make good choices. Im really impressed and definitely glad we bought this. It was well worth.

One of the better Choice of Games offerings out there. Kevin Gold is an excellent writer, and he has weaved together a great little story about the ancient city of Alexandria. If you enjoyed Choice of Robots, or just like good stories, give this one a try.

Enjoyed the story and the replay value. Got all the achievements for the story though all we can say is maybe add a few more where it’s difficult to get unless you choose the right path? Besides that great book!

This is honestly one of the best choice of games game we’ve ever paid. We were sad since you had to pay to get access to most of the game but it was totally worth our money, 5 stars.

Kevin Gold might not be at his best (compare to Choice of Robots), but if you enjoy culturally captivating story-telling with a reserved retelling of history, buy this.

We really like this game it was really fun to play. We rea.

We don’t care at all for this business model. It’s not free to play, as ‘get’ button indicates on the App Store. There’s not enough replay ability to be charging $2.99. And we refuse to play a game with ads. We want to pay once and play, no freemium games for us, ever. We wouldn’t mind spending maybe 99 cents, but not $2.99. Overcharging on the App Store has cost them (Apple) a whole family of customers, as this game sent us over the edge. We won’t be using it for games any longer, nor will our family.

U have TO PAY! We got the app for free and now we have to pay SMH! You can only read one chapter!

Even though we seemed to have achieved the best possible outcome we found the story to be extremely short. We just love these make your own adventure stories but this one lacked in content. It was a good story not great and definitely not worth 3 dollars. Especially if we can finish the story in less than 4 hours.

The writing is pretty well done, but the word count is meager and depressingly uninteractive. Only a small amount of choices really feel like they go anywhere and we’re overall disappointed. As a story by itself it’s alright, but the choices are limited, the event chains are almost nonexistent and the limited romance choices annoy us. Especially since they’re both characters you have to throw away all your other plans in order to romance.

Didn’t even bother reading the first chapter. We’re highly disappointed that the game is advertised on the App Store as free, with no indication as to having to pay for more than the first chapter. If this was stated where it could clearly be seen without having to download, then we wouldn’t have an issue with it. As far as we’re concerned Choice of Games is baiting downloads to boost the game’s supposed popularity. Not cool.
