A Glimpse into CleverWords – Fun Word Game
Now with new ways to play: solo 1-person endless fun, 2-player, or original 4-player word game.
Play the “Mini” solo version: (1) type in a clue and select up to 5 associated words on a 9 word grid; (2) someone from the community guesses your board; (3) your “setter” rating is based on how well the community guesses your clues. Guess community boards and boost your “guesser” rating. How high can you get your rating?
Invite some friends and play asynchronously on your own devices. Get your bestie on board with the 2-player game or get the whole crew involved and play the original 4-player (2 against 2) game. For both, the objective is to select all of your partner’s cards on the grid. For 4-player, try to guess all your team’s cards before the other team. Beware of the Death Card—if this is guessed the game is automatically over and your team loses!

We were excited that everyone here says this is almost the same as playing code names. However, when we try to join a game. It doesnt let us. The only thing the app lets us do is play the daily guesses.
We tried both two player and four player random match. The buttons dont work to match with a random person. You either have to make a private game or dont play.
We used to absolutely love this game! Its so fun to play with friends and family. The new update, however, took away the feature to play with strangers! We used to be able to join a game as a setter or guesser and it would wait to put us in a game until it could find other players. Its absolutely ridiculous that they took this part of the game away. It was so fun to play with others especially when our friends werent available. Please add this back. No clue why you would take it away! Also, the ads are getting ridiculous. There are way too many.
Lightweight free version of the popular game with minimal ads.
We liked the game Codenames but this app wont let us click on a word when its our turn. N sometimes it deletes all the words that a teammate clicked already. To many issues.

This is a fantastic app version of Codenames, which we love. You can play with strangers or with friends, or even make friends with other players! Unlike other phone games that feel like they melt our brain, this is actually challenging and stimulating. Its been a great activity during the pandemic. Also, the developer and his family members actually play the game and enjoy it, so thats a great recommendation in itself. We met them through the app and theyre really nice! And fantastic players. We highly recommend CodeWords .
We like to play with our friends in real life with our one phone. We aint fans of the update. Can we down grade it so we can do that again?
For a game like this, we have no idea how the developers thought it was a good idea to not include a way to play online with random people and not just friends. That hurts their user base more than forcing people to find friends helps because many people like us will just delete the app as soon as they realize. And two, we were really hoping Id be able to just use this app as sort of a board for Code Name, but we cant do that either.
There is no way to block people who are harassing you.
We love this game. Im obsessed we wish more of our friends would download.

We’ve been playing for over six months. Its been continually improving too! Everything youd want in a code word game. We decided to leave a review for the customer service we received, our game had a rare glitch that no one else was having, within a day our account was back and we didnt lose the games we were in the middle of, just exceptional!
We love this game but we came write a review to point out a few things that would improve it. 1. Please consider using a wider variety of words. For some reason it seems the same words are used over and over. 2. Each time a play is successful you have the forced option to post it on social media or send it in a message. This is annoying and unnecessary. 3. We wish the option to chat with other players was more user friendly. We cant figure out why we can do it and other times we cant. 4. Players should really be respectful of the rules and give ONE word hints and not two words combined. That is cheating and makes its less challenging for those of us who want to play fairly. If you CHEAT by combining more than one word we will purposely pick only one word or a word we know is wrong. Stop cheating people!!
Like the game, but we dont appreciate the sexist ads containing scantily clothed women and sexual language.
Great way to stay connected to friends and family. Better when youre playing with people who have similar background and/or education as you.
- add a zero and infinity for advanced play. 2) add this to android if you can so we can get more plays 3) the app seems to really lag out our iphone 10 if we play for more than 15 minutes. No other apps cause this problem 4) we rarely see intentional cheating, but if this game gets really popular and you add ranked games instead of unranked, then a report button would help 5) Would like to see the number count of how many games you played for full games. Also would be nice for the number of quick games played as statistics and also how many quick games youve won.
IOS devs need to get their lives together and stop with so many ads.
This app is singlehandedly getting us through our Quarantine. We cant get enough of it. Only suggestion is to find a way to pick up the pace of gameplay – some people sit on games for days, and they dont delete for 7 days. If someone doesnt play for 24 hours, there should be an option for another person to pop into the game! Thanks for this, developers.
We’ve gotten most of our close friends and family members hooked on this app. There is definitely a learning curve and a need to explain (and even send screenshots of) the official Codenames rules to every player before the games are fair and competitive. First criticism – the ability to go beyond 3 words as a setter is not readily apparent. We didnt realize we could swipe left until we witnessed a random opponent give a 5-word clue several days after we had downloaded the game. Everyone we’ve introduced to the game struggles with this realization as well. Second criticism – please provide an update that adds new words to the deck. While the base deck provides countless clue permutations, the fact that players feel like theyve seen the entire deck after only 8-10 games gives off a feeling of staleness. Add a second deck, or at least 20 new words, in the next update to freshen things up. Im telling you, we’ve had people lose interest and stop playing due to the repetitive nature of the word bank.
This is an amazing app. Code Names the board game is one of our favorite new games and this app does a great job bringing it to the app scene! Here are our two suggestions: Once youve started a game you cant end it unless you finish, which can be kind of annoying if, at the end of the previous game, everyone presses rematch and suddenly you have 4 games going. Would be smart if the app just allows one rematch per foursome. Or maybe the ability to delete a game after its been started. Also, most importantly, would love to be able to play against the computer and not need real participants to fill a game – this would make it go faster and wouldnt require the full 4 people to play. Thanks for helping make quarantine more fun!
We wish people would play normal games quicker, but thats part of the appeal – you can play at your own pace! The Quick Play is a nice non-commital way to get your Code Names fix, but the back button doesnt work properly when looking at the game history. It kicks you back out to the main Quick Play screen instead of to the game you were playing. You can sometimes get back in to the same one, but sometimes it gives you a new one altogether. Wish youd make an android version so we can play with even more people!

Great game! Needs to be a bit more user friendly between games and setting them up. Otherwise, the only problem is that more people arent playing.
We need more players……. Come on people….. Download and play with us…… Looks like it will be fun if the pace picks up…… And that will only happen with more players……..
This is the only phone game that is so addictive, we opt for notifications. This is so challenging and interesting, it never gets boring.
This is the fun game and they did A good job for the most part. The only thing is there is no way to end a game when players you dont know stop playing. The games show up as active games even though no ones playing anymore.
Is there a way to get rid of ads? We dont see a purchase option.
We love that this game is an app, but the current implementation has the absolute worst battery drain of any app we’ve used. As a comparison, 2 hours of CodeWords used 2.5 times the battery of 3 hours of YouTube! No text-based game should ever even come close to the strain of video streaming!
We were playing a game and after we finished we started another, but when we went back to the home screen, it logged us out and wouldnt let us play. We suggest not even needing to log in to anything in order to play.
The app did not request permission to view our photos when we tried to select a profile photo. It seems to have just granted itself access to our photos. Seems shady.
We like Code words a lot. It really makes you stretch your brain. Plus its different from other games.
For those who like CodeNames, this is the best mobile version of that game. You can play with family and friends that live far away or you can all play together while sitting in the same room! You can also play games with total strangers. The daily guesser is always fun and you get to see how you did compared to you friends. Such a fun game!
Love the game but dont like not having the option to delete games. Just wanted to play with our group of friends that we added not random people.
Fun game with great online multiplayer options, however the bus with iOS 13 lock up, game chat thats illegible in dark mode, and odd UI crashes when switching between chat, game play, and home with multiple games open are frustrating and disincentivizing.
We entered an email address, got the email, followed the link, that takes us back to the game which asks for an email address…
You can play this really fun game 2 min a day and be satisfied. Its addictive but doesnt take over your life. And its great for friends trying to keep in touch over long distances.
The app is fine, but it is very annoying after you end your turn and watch the ad, the screen goes black and you have to close the app.
Our friends and we have become addicted to this app. We usually have four or five games going at the same time. Its so much fun to keep us connected with good friends that live far away. Love hearing the recognizable ding telling us that its our turn. Great game to stretch your brain and think outside the box. When the game is over its fun to talk with our friends and see what direction they were going with the clue they gave. Totally recommend this app!
We don’t have a lot of friends to play games but with this app, we can play whenever with people who actually want to play code words.
Codenames has been a sacred addition to our game nights. Weve literally played several thousand hours in person, on tabletop simulator, on a web app. Its the perfect game. This is sick. This helps us stay connected when we cant make physical meetups. Thank you! Going to tell every single friend we know from the tabletop community. Any chance for adding friends and a opt-in chat in the future? 0 clue and infinite clue functionality is a bit of a skill curve problem but maybe some version with those when player base gets larger?

This app is so much fun, but when we got a new phone, we couldnt continue any of our games with our friends because theres no way to log in to a previous account, just a way to create a new account. So when we tried to log in, it would error out and say there is already a user with those credentials. Yeah, its us!! Im just trying to play our games!

Supreme app. This game requires you to get three friends or family to play together. Its an imaginative game that takes skill to play well. We’ve really enjoyed this game.
We love the board game Code Words, so we were excited to learn about this new app version. We have 6 games going right now with various friends and family members and its a blast! Its fun to be both the setter and the guesser (and it helps to be paired with someone that knows you well). Im definitely addicted and highly recommend!!
