Codeword Unlimited is a Word/Entertainment/Puzzle game from Havos Ltd, first launched in 19th September 2013.
It’s rated 4+ and currently has 1,710+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Codeword Unlimited Stand Out
Codeword Unlimited is an application to play the popular word game known as Codeword (also known as Cipher crosswords or Cyptograms). This game uses UK English spellings or US English spellings (user choice).
The words to find are in English, or you can play in 35 other languages.
For those unfamiliar with Codeword puzzles, they provide a grid of words, similar to a normal crossword, but with no clues, rather a few initially provided letters, and a number in each square in the gird to indicate its (as yet unknown) letter. All boxes with the same number must use the same letter. From that information and the few initially provided letters it is possible to work out which words will fit in the boxes. Hence you are decoding (or decyphering) the numbers into letters to reveal the hidden words. Usually all 26 letters of the alphabet are used in the codeword, although not always (and unused letters appear crossed out in the keyboard). It is fun, challenging, and a real brain teaser.
Feature list:
1) Unlimited number of codewords!! They are created on-the-fly using the application's advanced generator engine and it's built-in word list
2) The player decides the number of rows and columns (from 3 to 20). This allows the game to be suitable for all kinds of mobile-phones and tablets
3) Difficultly level can be specified by the user, which determines the pool of words the generator will use. The larger the pool the greater the difficulty. There is even an early learner mode with a limited number of words, aimed at children and English language learners. The number of starting letters can also be specified. Higher scores can be obtained with more difficult codewords
4) Selecting a square in the grid will highlight all places the same letter is used in that grid (i.e. has the same number to decipher). This is really handy and of course not possible when doing codewords in a magazine
5) If a game is too difficult, the application provides two useful tools to help you (see below)
6) For any word in the grid for which all squares are assigned to letters, Codeword Unlimited will highlight if that word is NOT an allowed word in the word list it uses to generate its codewords. This helps you when you have mistakes in your current assignments (saving you lots of time and frustration!)
7) An on-screen keyboard means it is much easier and more comfortable to play
8) The definition of a completed word can be viewed. This is useful if you do not know it, or you are learning a foreign language (internet connection required)
9) Choose the language of the word list, from a large range of downloadable dictionaries. 36 languages are currently available (see below)
10) Can be played in portrait or landscape mode. Just rotate your device and the display adjusts automatically
Other similar applications want you to pay for more puzzles, but this game provides you with endless puzzles, all for free!!.
Each game is assigned a difficulty level from 0 (easy) to 9 (very hard). The difficulty level is determined by the settings or the difficulty selector. Each difficulty level maintains the high scores (measured by fastest time to complete the game). The game displays the best 20 scores for each difficulty level.
If the player is in difficulty, the application provides two very useful aids
1) The game can provide another decoded letter
2) The game can show you potential answers for an uncompleted word. The game uses the letters that you have already decoded and displays the matching words

We have been looking for an Codewords app where we could customize the difficulty (so we could get truly difficult challenges). This app delivers! And its free.
We like the game but the ad doesnt go away after it is done. It waits for you to download the advertised appeven if you dont want it.

We really enjoy this game. Puzzles were challenging but solvable. Ads were limited and not annoying, but the banner ads started scrolling across the top of the game so we couldnt see the puzzles! We stopped playing and deleted the app, but would still be playing it were it not for the ads blocking the puzzle.
WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU we have been playing this game for years with zero ad interruptions, and what on earth is this CRAP ABOUT showing letter is wrong, and being able to try another WITHOUT AN IDIOTIC PENALTY!! We are extremely upset, because this was the best app ever for Codewords! Not anymore.
Would be perfect if there were an option to get rid of ads.
We have a lot of Codeword books but we enjoy having the game on iPad because we can go back and forth to the different games. We are learning Solitaire but when we get frustrated we go back to Codeword, which is our favorite game.
An excellent word game you can complete in one sitting or put it away to resume later. A good vocabulary builder and mental exercise. Sequential typing, added in v5.4.2, is especially convenient on a small phone. Im updating to pro.
This is a good app, and like other reviewers, we like its many features. However, we really hate that theres an ad before we can start our first puzzle! We would expect ads between puzzles, but it irks us to start like this.
We started playing the game, intending on playing 2-3 rounds or a half-hour's worth. But when we finally pulled ourselves away & looked at the listings, we found out we'd been playing for 3 HOURS!!! We couldn't even be too sorry about all that time, wasted on a game, because it was really just so much fun.
Cant play more than 2 games without at least one ad. Sometimes 2 which have 30 second timers so you cant get rid of them right away. Would be nice to have a paid version to get rid of the ads.
We have to make ourselves stop in order to do something productive.
Fun and addicting. Settings allow you to set your preferences better than many we've seen. Occasionally we learn a new word. The down side is when you ask for a letter, it usually gives letters that are not used often so you have to get a few more letters than you'd like but we still always enjoy the game.
Hours of fun at a level of challenge you desire.
This is a superb app we have enjoyed doing the puzzles for a couple of years .The best codeword app we have come across.
Pretty easy to use and lots of fun.
Big, blocky screen when you win, looks like a four year old designed it. Ads pop up now when you start a game and take over the app. You have to play the game to get it to disappear, and the time counts against Codeword play.
This is our favorite type of puzzle. Thanks for letting us plays so many various levels of difficulty. Keep them coming.
We enjoy this game, and have progressed through the levels. But it is a bit off putting when you get a grid with only one letter filled in. Once, there was a single f in the entire grid. Also, there does not appear to be a way to quit a given game, so you can get stuck for a while.

This is always one of our favorite puzzles in word puzzle books, but there were never enough. Now we can have an endless supply! We like the ability to change difficulty levels. This one's a keeper.
