CrazyStone DeepLearning Pro Reviews

We have enjoyed the layout and analytics when playing against the AI. Sometimes we see not the best moves played by the AI, but perhaps this is appropriate for the difficulty level we have chosen. Great!

There are stronger apps out there now, but none that track your progress and automatically set up your games against a large selection of difficulty levels like this app. This app and SmartGo basically define our standards for what features Im looking for in other go apps. Also A Master of Go is the strongest native go engine for iPhone… Its just an iPhone implementation of the Leela Zero engine. Im not strong enough to benefit from it though, and its lacking in features, so we still train on this app.

High price tag, but we splurged anyway. Its six dollars a year for the premium subscription inside the non Pro version for comparison. It doesnt actually say this anywhere, but FYI there are no ads like in the non Pro version. A major reason we bought it. We are SDK trying to improve with many small-board games played quickly. The AI is strong (and pleasantly quick) when it tries (high Dan setting), but will allow the occasional odd mistake at weaker settings (play a bad ladder, overlook a big capture). The rating system is very nice. No real bugs that we can find. GUI is a bit kitsch but not distracting. Havent tried SGF file management yet.

The ranked mode automatically adjusts the computer difficulty to your level (up to 5dan) as your rank is updated with each game and can be played on 99, 1313 and 19*19 boards.

We’ve owned & played CrazyStone for almost 2 years now. Runs seamlessly on iOS, Im 7-8 kyu and can beat this app at only 6-7 kyu, no lower, so its pretty accurately rated. You set the computers strength by Dan-kyu, so great flexibility. Its much stronger than us if we open the throttle on its engine & if you search YTube, can see older vids of BattsGo Dwyrin, Hajin Lee, Hanayeol, and other high Dan players engaging w CrazyStone. Although one can play bots, like OGS, those require internet or cell connection; CS is a standalone app that can be played anywhere without data connection. Simple setting, saves all your games in sgf, can play human v human if you want to play friend & have no real board or are traveling (train, etc). With SmartGo Kifu moving to new subscription format, CS may be the best one-time paid iOS Go app. We love it. No relationship to game creator, just happy customer.

This is probably the best Go/Baduk app for IOS. Well worth the money for a solid, professional quality game with so many features. We spoke with UNBALANCE and they do indeed intend to keep up with bug fixes and IOS changes. We recommend this over the other subscription based version, but thats a personal choice. The engine is more than strong enough for us. We especially enjoy the rating and analysis modes. Also, this version supports landscape.

This app is wonderful for our level.

We hesitated buying this for quite a while because of the negative reviews, especially regarding the SGF import/export capability. But we finally took a chance and am happy to say that they have fixed all of those issues. You can copy and paste to/from the clipboard to exchange games with other apps, export via email, load/save from iCloud and Dropbox (and probably other cloud drive apps, those are the only ones we tested), and it also works as an Open with … Target for other things like email attachments and web links. Id recommend trying the free version of CrazyStone first and seeing if it works for you because the import/export features are the same there. The Pro version adds Analysis mode and Rating mode (which tracks your rating separately for 9×9, 13×13 and 19×19) and removes the ads found in the free version. As others have noted, the UI isnt the greatest in the world, but it is functional when you get used to it. Even though it is quite expensive, Im happy with the purchase, and it is at least much more affordable than the Steam version.

And has not been updated for 7 months.

This is by far the best app for GO players available(I have most). The analysis mode is a fantastic tool for any Kyu level player. Probably lower Dan level too. If you want to improve, play auto rating games and then analyze them. You WILL get stronger fast. It’s pricey, but well worth it for the serious player.

It shouldn’t be so hard to open an sgf file with this app. Do a Google search for iOS file association.

Pros: It’s very nice to have the ability to do basic blunder checking analysis on games, and as a DDK player we enjoy playing against the engine. Cons: The inability to import SGF in any way other than syncing through iTunes is a big disappointment. We need to be able to paste SGF as well as exporting to Crazy Stone from other apps, as well as export (with analysis, please!) SGF to other applications and not just via email. This could be a great app. As it stands, it’s a great engine with a tolerable interface, and awful (almost non-existent) import/export capabilities.

Analyzing an existing SGF requires using a computer to sync files from iTunes (in 2017!), rather than allowing you to paste an SGF from the clipboard, or loading one from Safari. The analyze feature requires using another SGF editor like SmartGo to even see what alternate moves CrazyStone proposes, because (even on an iPad) the board coordinates are truncated and there’s no indicator of "CS Best" on the board. (I’d like to see the top 3 moves, incidentally). These tiny things alone cause so much friction that it’s very hard to enjoy the amazing benefits this app offers. A little bit of polish will go a long long way!

When we clicked on 5d and no time limit, it only thought to 10 secs at maximum, and it wasn’t 5d strength, there’s options to give crazystone more time to think them being 10 secs, 20 secs, 30 secs and 60 secs…. We played regular crazy stone 5d ( 10 secs per move ) vs crazystone at 60 secs per move and the one with 60 secs of thinking time lost!… So we thought maybe the longer thinking time is just good against humans…. As far as we can tell 10 per move isn’t even of dan strength and 20 secs per move is 1d maybe 2d what’s also strange is that it doesn’t even think for the complete time limit it always leaves an extra 3 secs for no reason….. Is it worth the 17 bucks yes if your looking to play a 2-3d level app, we have to do more testing, also we need to know if it uses the hardware from our iPad or if it’s just a built in powerhouse….. Idk so many questions need an answer….. Not sure why this app doesn’t go all the way to 7d…. Honestly though, wish you guys just gave an engine server option, but for free cause if 10’secs per move can beat 60 secs per movie we don’t know who you expect would buy this if it’s strength isn’t even 4d nevermind 5d…. Maybe the time settings are just better against humans, maybe 30 secs per move is good in standard games, but why must we need to test these apps/engines on everyone to figure out its true strength?…. We’ve tested enough now, 30 secs per movie it’s a strong 3D, and that’s the max it will be this app isn’t 5d like it says.
