A Glimpse into Dot’s Home

"Dot’s Home" is a single-player, 2D, narrative-driven video game that follows a young Black woman in Detroit living in her grandmother’s beloved home, as she travels through time to relive key moments in her family’s history where race, place, and home collide in difficult choices.

As an interactive experience, "Dot’s Home" allows players to see the harmful systems that dictate our relationship to race and place, through the eyes of those that are most impacted. By inserting the player into scenarios where they have to make choices about how and where to live in the midst of redlining, urban renewal, and gentrification, we ask a fundamental question: “How did your family end up where they are today, and how much choice did they really have in that journey?”

"Dot’s Home" is a production of the Rise-Home Stories project: a creative collaboration between multimedia storytellers and housing and land justice advocates who have come together over the course of three years, to reimagine the past, present, and future of our communities by transforming the stories we tell about them.

What’s New in the Latest Update?

Find out what’s new in the latest version of Dot’s Home updated on 28th February 2023:

  • Fixed a bug with the pamphlet interaction in Chapter 3 where the slots on the table for placing the pamphlets would sometimes be registered as full even when they were empty. This caused the pamphlets to stop snapping into place and would prevent completion of the puzzle. Now the slots get cleared properly.

We stuck on the part where dot has to throw away the pamphlet but where is the trash to do it?

Quick help, we dont know what to do after the man talks to her outside.. Where do we go, what do we do its not letting us go anywhere but that spot.

Very enjoyable! Wish it were longer it was so good.

Someone said its racist no it isnt it is educational! This is how poc were treated and gentrification is still something happening today, it was about a two hour gameplay for us and you got to see all endings! If you want to learn a little about history play this game and dont be offended by it because this sh.. Really happened. The most confusing part was all the keys that we didnt use Ill play through again to see if they had a purpose but play this game!

The details in this story are immaculate. With the issues of Poc, and immigrants, amazing story line! 10/10.

This game is so beautiful and really brings out the poverty of colored and immigrated folks when looking for a home for their families. It shows that when youre looking out for each other instead of the profit, it leads to even greater blessings. Though, the profit may be rewarding as well. We would like to applaud the game developers and storytellers for the opportunity of making this game free to play with a fully developed storyline. No adds, beautiful plot, as well as a cherishing message. 10/10.

We loved the art style of this game and also felt like we learned a bunch about the history of segregation, white flight, and gentrification in many US cities. The game was educational without feeling preachy! The characters were well-designed and relatable.

The game is about some tough hitting history that is presented in an immersive and emotional setting. A must play! It would be interesting to see more history lessons in this format.

Super cute story, not many choices because theres only 3 possible endings but we dont mind! Good if youre looking for a short game, we finished in 1 day.

Us gusto mucho lo complete el juego us dio tristeza en el final.

This is a great game with a great concept but it leaves you hanging! We want to play more!

As a sheltered White man with an invisible disability, nothing has made it so clear that a community is essential in todays age. This exact thing is happening to our house, and to our neighborhood. We are glad we went through with this game, because social studies and history were always difficult for us. This is a work of art and needs to be played by every generation, in order to keep the positivity up. You need to build your supporters, and pass the torch. Godspeed everyone.

We loved what the game was trying to accomplish and felt it did exactly what was intended. It made us think, we sat and thought about what decisions to make carefully because it made us think about our own position right now. The news was very insightful as well. We appreciated it and love the artwork as well. We should have more games like this to help educate our people on other topics as well.

We loved this game. As a black woman living in a area being gentrified this hits home to us. We wish the game was a little longer and plot a little thicker but its a fun quick game. It wasnt overwhelmingly emotional but enough to get you thinking and appreciate what you have. We would play this game again absolutely.

This game is amazing! It was short, but had so must history behing our people. We’re impressed with the historical and cultural accuracy. Love it love it love it!

This game is AWESOME. We love how a game finally has African American characters, a story line that is a common true story for many of us. The choices are important and you have to think them thorough. Theres no ads and nothing you have to pay for. The story is beautiful and we love it.

We love the art,the plot,EVERYTHING.

Ok we’re playing, but an aspect of this game that we think this game nails on the head is that the pursuit of constantly getting richer can separate you from the people that matter in your life… And leave you open to manipulation. If you wanna speedrun the good ending, rent, stick with Amos, and rent to the Tawfiqs. It’s not money that makes a good life, it’s people. Oh, and having grown up in "well-to-do" environments. The neutral and bad endings about the kids being too well behaved and the police notices of noise complaints, of people keeping to themselves… It’s horrible and depressing. Having a strong community and an environment where you can actually walk outside and greet neighbors… That’s what really matters in life.

We loved this game. It was so interesting. And it was so true about how hard it was for people of minority to settle down and put their roots somewhere. We feel like this game illustrated it perfectly. We love how dot has to make hard choices that will impact her familys future. And we love how they are tryibggg bc to save their neighborhood so that the white man cant take it.

This game filled us with guilt and self-hatred for our whiteness. Thank you so much. We know that its our fault and we are so grateful that a person of color saw it in their heart to educate us (which is NOT their job) about her or his oppression at the hands of bad whites. Thank you!!! 5 stars. Im so sorry about slavery. PS. Neighborhoods should all be integrated. We all get along real good with those of other cultural backgrounds, just like in the movies.

The only thing we found inconvenient is Dot walking around aimlessly when its just be easier to click her in the direction w/o being able to go around everywhere else if there isnt anything to interact with. We love the message they convey with the history of black people in america trying to settle and support each other in their communities. Overall a 9/10 game.

We really learned something with this game. Thank you for reaching/teaching us.

We really liked this game, it was interesting but challenging to play. You have to really think about the best choices to make, when often both choices are undesirable. It really taught us a lot about the difficulties faced by POC (People of Color), immigrants, and lower-income people in the US in concerns to housing. We had learned about things like redlining and gentrification at school, but this game gave us more insight to how those things actually play out in the day-to-day lives of some Americans. We would definitely recommend this game, and we think it would be a great tool to teach kids about systemic housing discrimination against POC, immigrants, and lower-income people in America. And despite covering societal issues that can be depressing to think about, it was still fun and enjoyable to play. Also, the art and graphics are beautifully designed!

We were not expecting a game we actually like for years now we been getting stupid games no story nothing just! This is far the best game not only for educational purposes but the game please keep it going !

This game is a great game! Its just sometimes you get lost. So, could you add objectives? Thanks. Also can you make dot run? Like if you click the screen twice she runs. That would be great! Thanks for your time!

Beatifully designed and the informational storylines are superb! We really enjoy the relaxed game play. Well Done!!

We loved the game! The graphics were really good and we loved how you could make choices. We somehow chose the correct options to get the best ending so we completed the game in about 90 minutes. You can look at the other two endings without having to go through it again if you want to, which we liked. So if you want a cool, pretty and short-ish game, this is perfect.

Okay first of all this game is op! We love the graphics. The sounds are easy on the ears and calming. The amount of effort put in every Details is breathtaking. The design of the characters and the background are amazing. This game is really good. We loved every second.

We love this game! The graphics were very nice. It was easy to move around. You have to really look around and think about the choices you make and how they affect the future. We wish the game was longer. We hope you guys make other stories or continue that. It was great.

The game is pretty cool. We like the concept of it and we finished it in about an hour and a half. It would be nice if there were different challenges so that game is longer. Also, it would’ve been nice to go back to the grandparent’s past in South Carolina to make choices there.

It does a really good job of showing how housing discrimination works throughout the years esp in America. The transitions from time periods were clear cut and engrossing. The past has a slight dreamlike quality to it just in the same way as the mc is affected by it, and we get to kinda feel how it is for her too. The asthma thing really got us thinking. The art was top notch and we could play through it all in an hour or so. The story was interesting. Reading the paper and how it changed through generations but also stayed the same, showed how things dont just end. History does repeat itself and we can have a hand in making sure that doesnt happen. Why would there be a need to flip a home if the neighborhood was invested in properly so that everything was functioning and beautiful for its residents? But well that doesnt turn a profit, does it? It really highlighted things to show the guy, real estate agent? Murphy dude. How the grandfather was basically exactly like him, zero change. Spoilers *** Im confused how if the home was sold, in the ending we chose, how did the grandma get to keep living there?? As thats what it said happened afaik.

Made it all the way to organizing posters and cant get past it. Very fun game.

Honestly loved it. Beautiful art and music.

This game is so engaging and such a well written and interesting story. We loved it a lot. We wish it went on for longer! We restarted it as soon as we got to the end, hoping to look at how different decisions could shape up. Thank you for such a beautiful little game, please make more! This is amazing.

Dots home is the best and greatest game we ever played and we played the first time and we actually beaten it the first time.

We absolutely love this game, we’ve actually had to play in small bits so we can finish in a longer time period because everyone saying its such a short game and Im going to be so disappointed when we finish it, because its such a good game.

Im nowhere near finished. Matter of fact, we only had about 5 minutes of gameplay before we had to put it down. We didnt realize we had such PTSD. We wish we could say im too young to have experienced this but we were a witness to this just in 2014. Seeing Dot go thru it, makes us want to jump thru the screen and turn this into a fighting game. To stop more people from going thru it. Except its the other way around this is just a gameI have to fight IRL.. The fight is real.

We have finished this a few times and am still a bit in awe. It is more like a good story/game combo but still enjoyable. It offers a different perspective not often shared or explained but isnt super lesson or text book driven. Its a great reminder how every choice has outcomes and consequences regardless of what you choose.

Game makes you think hard about your choices and rewards/consequences. At the end of the game, you can see what all the different endings are without replaying. Game took us less than an hour, but still good.

A great one came that shed a highlight on the minority community. Will there be another version? Is the game going to be longer? Real-life expectations of today and the past.

We tloved that the concept of the game was very realistic, and educational. The only downside is that it felt like watching a movie, that ends as soon as you get to the really good part. We hope that eventually the creator comes back with a longer version.

This is a refreshing game. Not often are we given the truth of the matter so to speak. Especially in games. Its text heavy. Almost like a playable book. There are choice points and an interesting twist. Enjoy.

Great but sooooooooooooooo short.

We think the game is glitched? We cant get past the pamphlet task?

Pretty much what we expected. Give you no hope and no where to go. Just like white america.

We cant get past the throwing away pamphlets task.

This game was a bit disappointing to us. The artwork is great but other than that, the gameplay is very much on tracks. The most you can do is walk back and forth, interact with 3-4 objects and talk to a handful of NPCs. Im not even sure it did a good job of communicating the story we have family in Detroit and Im black we still didnt feel very invested in the characters. Im not sure how the choices we made lead to the ending we got we watched the other ones after and that did not clear things up very much. Im disappointed because we wanted to like this game. It would have been better as an interactive picture book. Theres just not actual game play. Finally its pretty clear what the developers think of the available choices I.e. Judgement is passed on you based on your decisions and its obvious whether that judgement is positive or negative. Further by making these choices into binaries (rent or buy for example) it really oversimplifies the message that we think this game is trying to send about race, place and community. Overall its a reasonable effort for a sociological intervention but as a game its a long way off from success.

It’s a beautiful game with a compelling story. But the dialouge and the way dialogue is delivered gives us a headache.
