DRAGON QUEST VIII Reviews

This game is amazing, which is par for any dragon quest game, however we have a hard time enjoying any game in portrait mode it just feels unnatural, we know there must be a reason for this choice but it is still unfortunate and any effort it takes to fix this would be worth it.

We only wish we could play this on our iPad in landscape mode :(

We just got it and we love it just as much as Pokemon. Oh and just for a thought we love the Slimed they are just so cute!!!!!!!!

Everyone breathe and enjoy 1.1.3!! It features a working Cloud Save function AT LAST!!!! Finally!!!!!!!!

Pls we want you to introduce a Japanese translation.

We were very concerned with frame rate before purchasing as we couldn’t find anything reliable. We have an iPhone 7 and the game runs perfectly. Looks like 30 fps.

This great! DQ8 is our favorite in the series, its amazing that we can now play it when ever we have a chance since its always on our phone. We played this back on the ps2 days. Picked up the 3DS version when it came out, still play it when we have our 3DS on us (amazing port as well) but since we cant be taking our 3DS with us around anymore like before so this is a awesome way to still have a way to play it. Our only small complaint is that the voice acting is gone and that we cant play in landscape mode but other then that its still a great port! . 5 stars.

Finally they fixed iCloud save!!!!! We can finally play this amazing game haha.

Thank yoy Square for putting this on here. We cant get this game ever becAuse its so expensive to get so much of a throw back. Even though we cant get voice acting. We still get Dragon Quest 8 running on our Iphone SE (2020). Quality is just like we remember from the PS2 Days Might Even Load and Run Faster Now Actually. Im so grateful. From the bottom of our heart as a child. Been a fan since the Nes Days. So im good with any kind of graphics we can get a hold of.

This game has a wonderful storyline, and well developed characters. Its simplistic enough to for anyone to start playing, and yet complex enough to entertain even hard core gamers. The one let down that we have is that on the mobile app version of the game, the characters Voices have been removed, and everything is in text only. This is personally a huge disappointment for us, and we would really like to see the audio files added back to the game. It really helps players bond better with the characters and the storyline. Having said that, this is a game that you could play around the clock for weeks even months at a time, and its well worth every penny!

We love the game the updates and how they have been keeping the game up to date. We wish they could put back the voice acting. It might sound stupid but we always cracked up when yangus piped up with cod blimey.

The last update gave us a HUGE performance boost, we LOVE IT.

A lot of the negative reviews on this game indicate it runs poorly, but those are older reviews for people with older or smaller phones. Im playing it on iPhone XR and its excellent. Cutscenes have some framerate dips, but actual gameplay is really smooth. Looks great on the large screen, colors really pop, and the use of the full screen makes the vertical perspective not such a big deal. We still feel like we get a full view of the games world. Havent tried it on iPad, though we can imagine forced vertical orientation would be annoying there. We like it on iPhone. Controls work well. Touch screen controls really are the perfect way to do straightforward, menu-based RPGs. One-handed play is really comfortable. We dont like touch screen joysticks for games that need a lot of finesse, but for a game like this, its totally fine. Camera controls are easy & intuitive. Auto-walk is a nice touch that lets you play while your attention is diverted. If youre into voice acting and symphonic soundtracks and maximum levels of grandioseness in your RPGs, this is probably not the version for you. Get a 3DS and play that version. This one is fantastic for sneaking in some grinding while you wait in line or sit on the train. For us, thats the best way to play this kind of game, and probably the only way Im ever going to get through it. As for gameplay and story and all that, its Dragon Quest. If youre familiar with the series, you know what youre getting. Fight, fight, heal, buy a new sword, and grind until you level up. Find the bad guy and kill him. Kill innumerable weird monsters in between. Its simple but timeless.

We just bought this gem and we havent really invested time in it for 5 years so revisiting this masterpiece is a great feeling. It looks great and runs smoothly for us (Im using a iPhone XR) only downside is there is no voice acting which the PS2 port had but everything else is so amazing you pretty much forget about that. Everything is very easy to navigate once you get used to it and Im so happy to have this game in our pocket or at home when we feel like playing a great RPG. We were pretty surprised to see this epic game on the App Store so it was a must have when we seen it. Definitely the best RPG we’ve ever played and would highly recommend for anyone whos interested in the RPG genre.

We were very hesitant to to pay this much for a mobile game. We are glad we did our homework to find out that this App was not only a sufficient way to play the game but a fantastic experience. We are not a fan of lengthy JRPG time with a handheld. An iPad is so much more versatile over a 3DS. We have young kids and we do a lot of retro gaming. The kids just loved looking over our shoulder to follow along on the story. We had a lot of fun talking about slimes, puff puff and plenty of crafting. We thought we would have a massive issue with touch controls. We were very wrong there. Our only issue was not having the landscape mode work with the Apple Keyboard. Easy to get past Hardware:2020 IPad Pro.

We hardly ever write reviews but we played this game for the first couple of hours thinking we would get bored and it definitely fooled us! We have a lot of fun grinding our levels and enjoying the story.

We dont know what all they did on this update (the first in two years) besides update the game to correspond with the iPhone X screen size, but they changed other stuff. The game runs so incredibly smoothly on our X now, its at least 30 FPS if not 60 constantly. If you have an iPhone X or newer we would greatly recommend this game. Its always been a fantastic game, but with this newest update, they made it a fantastic port.

We ended this game a few years ago longest hardest game we played on a phone a average person couldnt beat this game take a lot of patient & decision making to play & end thus game they need more dragon quest games like this only game close to this monster hunter.

Exactly everything how we remember it, minus the voice acting, and the camera controls could be better, but they’re good enough. Sweet!

Thanks for the iphone x update. Gonna play it again. More dragon quest games please. Maybe dq builders?

We love this game. Just wish they would add the 3ds features on to the app. That would make us play nonstop.

We are so worried about breaking/losing our device and having to start all over because the cloud save doesnt work. This game would have been 5 star if it wasnt for this. We did end up losing our save and having to start over. We wish we never bought this Update: THANK YOU!

Cloud saving has been working since the update!!!! :)

We’ve had this game for awhile and always have the bad luck of never being able to finish it. But since we got a newer iPhone we decided to start it up again, to our surprise a few days later there was a massive update taking full capabilities of the iPhone X models screen and processing power. Full screen support, amazing resolution, and even upping the FPS!!! If youve ever had a doubt on buying the game before on one of the X models you wont be disappointed it looks and feels great! P.S. They also fixed the problem with the cloud saves. Thanks Square this was an awesome update long in the waiting, we hope you get a chance to do these kind of updates for most of your other games, people will definitely be glad to buy.

Came to review the iOS/mobile version. The game itself is a classic and not much else needs to be said on that note. Regarding the mobile port and borrowing from other reviewers common complaints, we are happy to report that we think the game runs fine on iPhone and the control system is absolutely OK. It is locked to portrait mode, but can at least set the thumb stick to center/right/left depending on personal prefs. Also updating to note that we love the old school soundtrack and dont mind no voice acting at all. Playing on a 12 pro Max.

The game designers have straight up BDE. Gameanimationcontent.

This is the first review we’ve ever written. We feel compelled to write this review because this is the first hope for humanity that we’ve felt in a long time. This is one of the most underrated games of all time with great art design, plot line, leveling, monster collecting, open world, not to mention one of the best OSTs ever made. We have waited FOREVER for this game to come out on more platforms and get the recognition it deserves. We just hope that more people play this through and game developers start to take notes on what a perfect game looks like. Im not even mad that they cut the voice acting, it was a great accent in the ps2 version but we CAN DEAL WITH IT. These kinds of games (open world turn based rpgs with a focus on story) are perfect for mobile gaming and probably the only type of games we can see myself playing in the future. Let us reiterate: this type of game is the only type worth playing on mobile, especially when you factor in controllability which isnt much of a problem in turn based rpgs. In conclusion THANK YOU, YOU MAGNIFICENT GAME GODS we LOVE YOU, YOU HAVE EARNED YOUR PLACE IN VALHALLA YOU BEAUTIFUL HONORARY NIPS! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!….

This game runs smoothly and has a good story. We thought we were approaching the end of the game multiple times but it just kept on going :) we finally beat it and the only issue we had was that sometimes when you throw a pot or barrel it messes with your camera angle. Other than that everything was great!

We read other platforms have speed battles available…. Am we missing something???

We were looking forward to this game but was soon disappointed by the lack of voice acting compared to the PS2. We dont know why they havent updated it and added that in, especially when they updated it for the IPhone X.

Wow just completed the game today Jan 1, 2021… What an amazing game. A great story and amazing turn based combat. Loved it if you love jrpgs.

Best DQ on not the best platform, but still playable and convenient. Might be the weakest way to experience the game, but still gold overall.

This is our favorite game ever. We didnt get a chance to play it on PS2, and first played it hear on mobile. It is like the original PS2 version released in Japan with no voices and a beautiful midi soundtrack instead of orchestral. But the graphics are much sharper and look great! And it fits in your pocket! This is a huge world and beautiful story in your pocket, updated for latest iOS devices, and has cloud saves again. We highly recommend this game! NOW, Square Enix, can you please localize Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest Monsters Terrys Wonderland here in the Americas? Please!

DQ8 is easily the most visually gorgeous game in the franchise: vast open world, lovely attention to detail, cutscenes that ooze personality, and Toriyamas iconic art style. This app continues the series tradition of extremely high-quality mobile portsIve had no crashes, no lag, just smooth sailing all the way. Our only complaint is that the fixed portrait mode, a longtime quirk of the mobile versions, becomes wildly annoying in ways it hasnt been in the past. Previous games have all been top-down, so while the aspect ratio has always been a little restrictive it has never truly gotten in the way; however in this eighth installment even the ability to toggle the camera cant make visibility any less like looking through a crack in a door and it makes navigating frustrating. We dont know how big a job it would be to offer a landscape orientation, but it would be deeply appreciated.

So we love DQ 8 and we played it back on PS2 with the VO. We just wish the devs put a little more time into adding the VO and some of the quality of life changes introduced in the 3DS version. Other than that its not too bad of a port.

We’ve been playing this series sequentially since the original Dragon Warrior came to the US. It was time for VIII and we were glad we could play this on modern hardware. The camera can be rough, and some of the older textures / cut scenes look a bit rough stretched out on an iPad Pro. Despite that, the game was great to play on this platform and a fun play all around.

Id pay an extra 5 bucks if you guys updated it with the original voice acting and soundtrack.

Its a great game we just wish that we could have dialogue and all the extra stuff that was added to the 3Ds version of the game.

Handoff between cloud save and devices is frustratingly inconsistent and slow. We like being able to switch from our iPhone 8 to our iPad Pro (1st gen) when we have time. We do enjoy this game though and it runs otherwise really smoothly. We’ve played 16ish hours so far and love it. Just got to King Trodains castle.

Both the ps2 and 3ds versions have an amazing musical score. On mobile, though, everything sounds so bad. We played iv-vi on mobile, and the music sounds so much better on there. What happened Square? Even with this complaint, the game is still enjoyable. Voice acting would be cool though ;)

How come we have to read everything they say in this instead of being able to hear them speak? Im knocking off a star because theres no voiceover work.

We love this game, but no denying it drags on sometimes and this is the WORST dq game when it comes to grinding. So please if youre not gonna have overworld sprites, at least add some speed up option because dang.

Game looks amazing in iPhone. Our only complaint is cloud saves are not working. We have two phones and cant resume cloud saves from another phone. Please fix this!

This has been an absolute joke, we’ve played all weekend and try to synchronize save data which should just simply swap out whatever is the most recent save files between your device youve been playing on, and the cloud. However, this is not the case, and they make it very unclear as to what youre supposed to do in order to not lose a weekend worth of save games! Does it make sense to deal with a system that doesnt show you what kind of replacement file from the cloud youre about about to get in exchange for your weekend worth of play? NO! Ill be happy to give the fifth star back if square fixes this in an update, and that goes for all the other DQ titles with this problem. Some things are plain ruined by mobile.

We got this to play on our light rail commutes. Graphics are amazing and the story is ok. Battles are standard, turn-based affair and there’s a little character customization. Our only gripe is the music is kinda whack. As someone who grew up on final fantasy games, it’s a nice entry into the dragon quest series.

We LOVE the Dragon Quest series! We think this is an awesome addition. We love the story, art, and concepts! Although the gameplay is a bit grindy compared to the newer additions, and landscape mode is not an option, this game is worth it. (But can still improve!)

Looks really good on our iPhone X! We wish cloud save was working so we could continue to play on our iPad the only other thing is we really wish there was an option to download the voice acting. We do really miss that from the old PS days. Other than that the graphics and the smoothness really make for a wonderful game!

Now we can play this game at 30 fps!!!

We never got around to playing the DQ series on NES or PS2, though the iOS version has definitely shown us what we’ve missed out on. Every bit as good as Zelda IMHO. The one major drawback, and something that could be so easy to fix its a very clunky control system to play on iPads (especially iPad Pro) at the very least, of you could make it where the directional pad is off to the left or right , it would turn this into a hand cramp magnet , into something thats quite a pleasure to use. It would be just a minor update, taking less than an hour we imagine, yet could improve the experience drastically for gamers. We dont mind that the orientation is stuck in vertical as much as some, but if you could fix that one gripe, we would be much more willing to invest in the other DQ games. DQ deserves every bit as much attention as the final fantasy series, and would benefit even more if you could eventually add MFI controller support, but at the very least, please adjust the position of directional controls .. Maybe even add a dual joystick that appears where player puts thumbs, one for direction, the other, for camera. Thanks!
