Dive into Five Card Quest – Tactical RPG Battles

Five Card Quest is a tactical role playing game designed to offer lots of challenge and replay value, while also being easy to control with one thumb. There are five cards in your hand, and every card you play is a different move for your team of heroes to carry out.

Dungeons and battles are randomly generated, making every game different. Create a party of adventurers out of 5 different character classes, each with their own strengths. Plan out your moves in a game about decisive turn-based combat and working out strategies around uncertainty.

If you’re very careful and a little lucky, you may be able to defeat the Golden King. You might even get rich in the process.

More Features:

  • Turn based battles let you agonize about each move and/or play it on the subway.
  • Difficult to win, easy to play.
  • Card game inspired battle system. You must plan based on what you have in your hand.
  • Fast paced combat, especially for the genre. Both you and enemies do lots of damage.
  • 16 different enemy types, all with different movesets and behaviors.

Find out what gamers are saying about Five Card Quest – Tactical RPG Battles:

This game is fantastic – once we played a couple games and got comfortable with the mechanics and animations/attack patterns, the gameplay really opened up. We wanna say it’s like a card battler, roguelike, RPG-lite type game, but it combines all of these elements so flawlessly that it doesn’t come across as a hybrid game. It’s just so beautifully done on every spectrum. The game does lag a bit on our iPhone 5 running iOS 7.1.2, but that’s kind of to be expected by now with our ancient device and outdated OS… However, when we upgrade, this will be one of the first handfull of titles to get switched over to the new phone. Just like Mage Gauntlet and Wayward Souls, this game will be on our phone until it doesn’t work anymore. THANK YOU FOR SUCH AN AMAZINGLY WELL DONE GAME, ROCKETCAT!!!! update Thank you for the update! We didn’t think you guys could, but the performance enhancements really made the game play a LOT smoother on our phone. The new card menus, battle info and icons letting you know when enemies will hit were all fantastic additions to this already great squad based rogue-like.

Enjoyed the game, but there are a lot of bugs.

We love the idea but wish there was character progression that went a little deeper. Perhaps we need to get farther into the game but the same few cars each class has does get a little old. Still, the game is fun, very easy to pick up and the art direction is new and refreshing. Well worth the money.

We mean, it’s a creative idea and we love the art, but we don’t fully understand how to play and it seems really basic. We don’t like the fact that the game ends when you run from a fight. We prefer games that don’t constantly start over. But it’s still a solid game with good art and a different take on its genre.

It’s a fun game, but repetitive. The basic design is solid and it requires you to actively think and plan. Unfortunately, there’s some balance issues that make it more repetitive than it should be. There’s a variety of options to choose, but too many are ineffective. This leads to either sticking to what works or dying. The game is also too padded with fights that are exactly the same. With practically no incentive for battling beyond advancing toward the goal the game feels tedious at times. Despite its flaws, the core gameplay is solid, and it’s quite fun in small bursts. It’s great as something to distract you while waiting. Definitely better than the the average iOS game.

1st try: we got to the void 1st page. 2nd try: we beat the game, so relatively easy for us. Not alot of randomization when it comes to the dungeons. Both times played the layout seemed very similar along with what the vendors sell as well. Fighting is very repetitive. The guard is by far the best unit(1v5’d with the guard as last alive). If we were to give some tips I’d say start with the archer(highest damage dealing class) & guard. Rogue is pretty solid too. Priest is good for final battle. Mage is average. Basically, all you gotta do is take the least amount of dmg possible. Avoiding dmg is more important than dealing dmg. There’s a skull indicator when an enemy is about to strike across. So you try to "interrupt" them or move into a different lane so your guard can tank the hit. The game needs more variation. Perhaps they should add equips for the units and monster loot.

The battle mechanics are engaging and a nice spin on traditional turn-based combat. What keeps it from being a 5 star game is that so much information is hidden which makes it harder to plan your turns and make skillful plays. The longer you play the more you’ll get a rough feeling for how much damage your cards do but this is just an unnecessary learning curve which detracts from strategic planning. Gives us an option to view the numbers behind the cards instead of vague descriptions like "little/lot of damage".

4 stars because of lack of updates. Its a great game that just isnt finished but the devs seem like they are done with it. Its fun and unique. We really wish theyd add new character classes. We also wish they would lower gold cost for items at the beginning of the game. Also we ran into a visual glitch bug with a potion heal. Also enemies seem to be a tad off sometimes. They wont attack when the indicator says it will. Anyway we want more and we hope to see an updated version.

Rocketcat is the best, and this is a really fun, great game. But for a roguelike, it is a little half-baked, no way to upgrade your characters over time. But worse is how buggy this game is. Crashing. Issues with delayed moves not initiating. Enemies attacks skipping a turn so your counter/blocks dont land. Spell counters dont follow any rules. Pretty frustrating. Id be happy if the bugs and rules were cleaned up.

We love the game! Unfortunately, there are some game-breaking bugs. They’re mostly related to the game crashing during a battle (or sometimes, completely glitching out during battle making it nearly unplayable). After restarting, you’ve lost all your items and health, etc., with nothing to show for it. This ruins all of your strategy planning for the level and has more than once been the direct and instant cause of our defeat. We would love to return with an updated rating for the game if the battle bug is resolved, because we enjoy playing it up until the inevitable break down.

This is a (very) weak knockoff of one of the best games on the App Store. Although there are some good ideas here, the whole is bland and repetitive. Just get DreamQuest.

It’s a rogue-like card game with a poor UI. Cards do not give proper info like amount of damage they do, there’s no way to tell the play sequence, i.e. Who is attacking next turn and it overall has very low replayability in our opinion. Might be ok for 99 cents but not 2.99. Waste of money as is.

Love this game, but there are bugs that inconsistently impact state. For example, we increased health at a fountain and used an item going into battle. In battle the fight crashed. We can live with that, but when starting the app after the crash the fountain is used, the item is gone, and our health is at pre-fountain levels. So we’re impacted beyond the crash because we’re returned to a game state that never existed. Update: three times now the game permanently hangs on the first screen to continue a saved game. When we tap continue the screen almost fades out and we can see the big "V" flickering. Killing the app doesn’t help. We have to start over to play. Dropping from 4 to 2 stars.

We tried hard to like this. The graphic style and core ideas are good, but this feels very unfinished. There are bugs with incorrect messages showing up and play behaviors that don’t trigger correctly. The turns play out in a baffling sequence, and it’s crippling never to know what will count as the "next" turn and the sequence of play within that turn. There is no visual feedback for basic aspects like whose turn is being played out, who has what buff/debuff, or how many turns until an action will trigger. The few visual cues that do exist, like the blinking skull on an enemy about to attack, are cheap looking, not at all clear, and not always accurate. Given that all of these things are fundamental to this kind of game, we can’t recommend it currently.

A 2.5 stars at best, and not good for casual players. We thought we could play it once in a while but while it’s okay, it… Lacks. Also, the healing thing is terrible. Not worth the price at all. Don’t buy.

We want to give this 5 stars because it’s a genuinely good combat system with some cool strategy. But it has three crippling issues 1. It’s unbalanced. You basically have to have a Guard in your party, because HP conservation is important and guards have all the good damage-avoiding abilities. Also, the Priest and Mage are significantly better than the Rogue and Archer. 2. The replay value is low. It would have been easy to add something like a simple "do less damage take more damage" hard mode or a challenge mode with more limited cards or weaker character classes, but they didn’t, and there really isn’t much to do after you win for the first time, except maybe try a no-guard run. Also the golden shuffle is pretty useless. 3. And most crippling of all: It’s incredibly buggy. Enemies don’t show up in the correct positions, sometimes attack indicators show up when they’re not supposed to, enemies sometimes delay their attacks for no reason, cards that say they give you a free turn occasionally just fail to do so, and a lot of the card descriptions flat out lie to you. Among these: the rogue’s vanish sometimes causes him to disappear indefinitely instead of attacking the following turn, the archer’s tactical shuffle sometimes doesn’t interrupt the enemy, the guard’s mirror shield blocks and reflects all damage, not half (and is incidentally the most broken move in the game because of this), the archer’s injury to insult targets the wrong enemy and doesn’t do any extra damage, and the priest’s Wither move WILL kill him if he uses it at low health, despite the description saying it won’t, and what’s more, if he dies while casting it, the attack just stops. If the bugs were fixed, we would upgrade this to 4 stars but as it stands, we can’t give it more than a 2.

And yet so much wasted on cards that don’t act the way they’re supposed to. That, combined with graphics that glitch sometimes make what could be a great game frustrating enough to rage quit often.

The game offers little to no depth. We bought this game once we demolished dream quest and it was listed in the related field. It was the same price but offered 1/100th of the content. Avoid.

Kept hanging up at the same point in the fourth dungeon. Started over twice with same results.

No first round that guides you through game mechanics. No help menu that explains the game. Tried 3-4 games and thought would pick up intuitively how to play the game. Nope. Useless.

What looked like a fun game is nothing but a lesson in frustration. Card descriptions either lie or are incorrect, game will not explain ANYTHING to you, least of all the turn system which the whole game revolves around. Save your money.

The following bug seems to be fixed. — When your enemy employs a vanish move, you can no longer attack him. Sometimes he just doesn’t show up again and you can’t finish the battle.

This is exactly what we look for in a game. It’s a careful balance of simple and deep. There aren’t many actions to take, but there’s an exceptionally deep level of synergy to explore. There are a few bugs (a card that isn’t supposed to kill the priest kills the priest, random game ending bugs) to work out, but once they’re gone there is 0 reason not to pick this one up.

We’re not very good at lane-based strategy games, or card games even, but we’re having a lot of fun with this one. We love the art style, and the music is fantastic to boot. Looking forward to getting better and finally beating the game!

Great game. Glad we picked it up.

Can’t believe this game is getting such low ratings. It’s absolutely phenomenal but we do suppose it’s not for everyone. It feels like an unwinnable chess match… But that’s just fine with us. Your only form of progress or achievement is surpassing where you previously reached and we love every second of it. Seems as it’s going to receive Dev support so yet another reason to love it. All in all, it is definitely not for everyone but we without question recommend it to anyone who enjoys this style and type of game.

Awesome atmosphere, gameplay, art, and strategy.

Great puzzler with a bit of strategy mixed in. Or is it vice versa? At any rate it’s been a fun game to stumble on and spend time playing. We like the casual nature of it where we can pop in and pop out. The art and sounds are cool too. Art reminds us of another game we can’t recall … But love the flat, stylistic characters. Well done team.

The game is difficult with great gameplay, but better wording and clarity with regards to mechanics and timing would be a big improvement.

We really wanted to give this game five stars, but two things are holding us back. The first is the lag in some of the battles, and second is the confusion about some of the cards you can play. We think a tutorial would definitely be beneficial. We personally like the "simple" look of the game. Fix the lag, and have a tutorial, and this will definitely be a five star game. We know you can make this happen Rocketcat!

With a little more polish this is absolutely a five star game, and am personally loving it so far. Gorgeous art Strategic gameplay Very replayable and just all around fantastic we did run into an issue where some enemies were stuck in the same position for a few turns, when in reality they had already attacked and gone back to a regular stance Also, after we used one of the potions, there were permanently green numbers above our heroes (would like to know what those were for in the first place) In the temple, the captive dodo is the same color as the carpet, which makes it seem like just some floating limbs For the better part of the temple, no numbers showed up when anyone was attacked When you play a card that allows you to discard, or when a character is stunned, you arent able to read the effects of the card, which is a little annoying Lastly, a tutorial would be lovely(: we think you just need to let the player know exactly whats going on in every move, like we have no idea what some of the enemy effects are- other than that, we truly love this game and would love to see more cards added. Turn based RPG’s are our favorite and we hope you do make more!

We are very much enjoying this game, though it does have some bugs and polish issues. We would recommend it despite these problems and greatly hope some of these issues can be resolved. Thanks, looking forward to the update.

Could be great but it feels unfinished as is. It seems that often the mechanics are buggy but it’s hard to tell because none of them are clearly explained or presented. Good idea but needs finishing.

If this game were made by anyone besides Rocketcat we would have rated it far worse. However, we are confident they will fix it with time. The gameplay is fun but buggy and confusing. Our save appears to have been corrupted somehow and when attempting to load simply makes the screen flash rapidly. In its current state, we cannot truly recommend this game. If patched properly we have high hopes but in its current state it seems rushed.

Rocketcat has made some of our favorite games. Sadly we feel FCQ lacks the polish and smart gameplay of their other efforts. It is very buggy (game just froze and lost progress after an hour of play) and things that should be clear to a player are not: when enemy attacks, exactly what a card does, etc. We like the art but the way enemies and your characters are stacked up in a line makes it hard to discern each figure and, worse, which character is highlighted. The map is ugly and adds nothing, and text size varies to fill the text box which is also ugly and just badly designed. Animations are not smooth and timing is off. Overall this game lacks the polish we expect from Rocketcat. The current gameplay is kinda fun but it feels random and a lot of the mechanics feel mysterious too. Plus the play sessions feel too long for a game that makes you start from scratch when you die. Makes replaying a drag. All that said we look forward to more games from this developer.

The idea of a shared deck for all characters is interesting and the interrupt and block skills keep you thinking. However, once the Assassin character appeared as an opponent, about a third of combats ended with no opponents in the battle, but a full health bar in one of the enemy lanes. Had to force terminate the game and hope to conclude combat next time without the bug.

This game is so close to being amazing. Lovely art style, fitting music and charming character design. But, this game is riddled with poor game design and bugs. The combat is very confusing to try and get used to, as there is no tutorial. Skills feel inconsistent and confusing, such as the Priest spell that blocks all incoming damage for that turn. The game does not tell you, however, that it only applies to the Priest. There’s also a few visual glitches, where dead enemies will stay on the screen, or enemies that were interrupted will stay still until they die. Also, there’s a lot of cards and options that are blatantly better than others. Mages and Guards feel like mandatory additions to your party, as the Guard is the only class that can effectively keep everyone alive, and the Mage has insane damage and utility. Our thoughts on how to improve the game, other than fixing obvious bugs, would be to add more interrupts to the other classes. Rogues have a cool concept on paper, but feel lacking in damage. Archers are fairly well done but are outshined by Mages in damage and Guards in protection. Priests need to be able to protect others, maybe even buff allies or give minor healing. These really hold the game back from being great and makes it very hard to recommend in it’s current state. Hopefully we’ll get a few updates to fix the bugs and balance classes. Until then, keep your eye on this one, it has potential!

This game is mechanically great. However, there is little reason to keep going. You only have 3/5 characters, they barely improve, gain no new strategies, items are boring, and there are no objectives.

5 Card has a unique take on the dungeon crawler genre, but not much else. With each enemy encounter relying solely on different character animations to stay diverse, the game becomes tiring. But the deal breaker is the complete lack of sense of victory. Regardless of how difficult the enemies, we never left a challenge feeling challenged.. Or successful. With little knowledge on how the game actually plays, and the confusion of the term "cards" lacking deck building strategy, all along with the small choice of characters, 5 Card Quest simply doesn’t satisfy.

The art here is stylish and engaging, and the gameplay has potential. We only really had two issues, and the second was a gamekiller for us. First, gameplay evolves very little as you progress. Enemies change, but only from one level to the next, which means every game ends up feeling very similar. Second, the game is SUPER buggy. Enemies freeze. Sometimes they vanish and you can’t defeat them (which ends your game). Sometimes your interrupts (particularly for the rogue) suddenly quit working. Some cards NEVER work right (like the mage’s firestorm spell). Was this tested at all? It feels like someone tried it out, saw how pretty it was, and just patted themselves on the back and called it finished. It definitely isn’t.

Too buggy to enjoy… Game freezes using certain cards, couldnt continue game after reaching a few levels. Needs an update to be usable.

It’s not a terrible app. It is just hard to get a good strategy down because it is hard to figure out what is happening.

This could easily be a great little game to have on your phone if it weren’t so buggy.

It seems like the developer started art and coding before the core game design and mechanics were fully proofed. The game is confusing to play because the design is confused. The various components and systems don’t add up, synergistically. The move set (character deck) is so limited and the battlefield state so vague and inconsequential, there’s no possibility of interesting tactics or strategy. Maybe they should have played some good games in this genre before deciding to make one.

Our game crashed after 2 hours. Now when we hit continue the screen just flashes. We wasted money and time as the game hasn’t been updated to fix this bug. Update and we will adjust our review.

Updated 11/1: gave this game a 3rd try and it’s still awful. Uninstalled. Updated 10/31: company update the game to reset poor reviews. Still laggy as before, still a rip off. Don’t buy Original review: Laggiest game on our phone at the moment (iPhone 5S latest updates). Game feels like a beta but the graphics look like a 5yr old arts and craft. There is zero tutorial and zero help. The buttons are not intuitive and the effects are so lagged that you cannot even guess what the buttons do. Waste of $3, we will be emailing apple why they allow garbage beta apps to be published.

As far as we can tell there is no way to level in this game. You get a predetermined set of resources and then try to go as deep as possible in a randomly generated dungeon. But what kind of card game doesn’t let you collect new cards? The cards that you start with are all that you’ll ever get and and the deck just isn’t big enough to be interesting. As it is gameplay seems shallow and we are kind of regretting buying this now.
