2022 DemoNight Nominee

Forward is an innovative game in which you will progress through a procedurally-generated dungeon in the form of cards. Move your character from one card to another and keep going forward while avoiding attacking enemies. However be careful, each card will have specific effects making each move important and strategic.

Your goal is to clear the 8 levels of a dungeon, each level getting increasingly difficult. In order to succeed, you will have to choose which move to make, which item to pick and use your skills. Each choice is critical.

Take advantage of many items combinations and build the best character possible based on your goal and the cards you’ll come across.

Features:

  • 100+ item cards to improve your characters
  • 9 playable characters with unique skills and game mechanics
  • 27 unique active competencies
  • 3 game modes

As Forward is a rogue-like inspired game, the features you’ll be able to find are :

  • Death ends the game ‌
  • Procedurally-generated dungeons
  • Turn-based movements
  • Resource management (health, armor, mana, gold etc)
  • Many randomly drawn items

The game is based on the 2022 PC game Forward: Escape the Fold which was received very positively. Developed by Two Tiny Dice, its success prompted the developer to bring the game to mobile.

It was sometimes impossible to enter your profile name on some devices.
To solve this issue, the save files are now automatically created at the first launch of the application. No need to enter your name anymore.
I’m really sorry for the inconvenience.

Forward: Escape the Fold Reviews

If youre a lover of Slay the Spire, Dawncaster, Inscryption, or MTG youll like this game. A few bugs need to be worked out (level skipping, blank screen) but the game itself is great and more than worth $1.99 we enjoyed unlocking the new characters, achievements, and challenges. Hopefully they drop some DLCs soon because its NOT ENOUGH.

Its so simple but brings endless fun. Great way to kill time.

Developer responded promptly to issue and created a new build. This is a fun rogue-lite card game.

Its a low commitment game that was thought out quite well!! Been playing it for a number of weeks on and off. Again very well thought. We like it. We do see there is likely going to be a cap here at some point. But its a loose cap, Unlike a full-blown campaign though with a clear end. Good play. Would certainly buy again and we recommend to friends. We have had no issues with gameplay or software bugs. And we note to developerI really love the different challenges. We think it lends itself to different peoples game preferences.

This game is delightful; a small, easy-pickup way to crawl through some dungeons and off some baddies The art is great, it starts off pretty easy and walks you through how everything works, and then starts to get more interesting as you acquire more characters (with unique abilities) and start stacking cards that enhance your actions. Im really glad this has a nice format for iPad; it can be used in landscape mode (which we love) since we usually have our iPad with our Magic Keyboard. If we had one request, it would be to enable iCloud Syncing between devices we usually play this game on our iPad, but sometimes, when Im out an about, we’ve wanted to play this on our iPhone and pick up where we left off and that functionality doesnt yet appear to be supported. Beyond that this game is a steal for only 2 bucks get it!

This is an updated review to reflect that an issue that we had was fixed and the game is both playable and fun as heck. Definitely recommended to all to enjoy.

Best card rogue-like on iOS!! Update: pretty sure this game has a Tony Todd Night of the Living Dead remake quote. Can we give this a hundred stars?

Clever mechanics and card/item synergies make for some interesting play. Each character requires different tactics, keeping it fresh. Successful runs take about 15 min, so good pickup-and-play.

We dont usually write reviews but a reasonable priced, thoughtfully designed, and really fun game without microtransactions is worth a great review! We really loved this game, and theres a surprising amount of depth to the card system, a variety of characters, and lots to discover! We hope the developer releases additional content: Id love to shell out a few more dollars for an expansion :)

Seems like a super fun game so we dont want to one star it, but we also am getting the profile bug (where we cant enter any text on the create a profile screen). Hope it gets fixed! Edit: fixed! Excited to play the game!

We read a few of the recent reviews and was worried whether or not the game was working let alone good, but as of February 18th, its working great (on iPhone 13 at least). We really enjoy what Im playing so far. Its very noncommittal which is the kind of game we needed in our library with mmos, Stardew valley, and rhythm games. We enjoy the gameplay loop and it really feels like you just continue to build upon whats already here when a good idea hits you. We think thats working for ya. Its early on, but so far we’re satisfied. 4/5 so that we can continue to see the game improve.

It did serve a purpose and was fun to unlock the characters and some challenges. But whats annoying is that on the journey mode which has the potential to be so much fun. Zero explanation to what increasing and decreasing the values actually do in game. We’ve tried a mix of things and they are all impossible because not one thing makes sense. Does increasing the quantity or the loot a good or bad thing? Does increasing loot quality mean theres less quality or more or rarity of items? Does it mean ill find less or more lol. Hopefully they can add some explaining.

Simple design but really fun and quick games! The game could use some stabilization updates but overall, really fun!

Game is fun at first, but pretty quickly it turns boring.

This game has a problem that many roguelikes share, which is that some of its difficulty arises from the statistical risk that it might generate a board which is impossible to beat even with perfect play. At lower levels of difficulty this is acceptable because its reasonably rare, but in some of the game modes, and with some of the characters, particularly the extremely imbalanced/gimmicky ones, youll find yourself losing because of an impenetrable wall of damage that no amount of preparation can forestall. This is frustrating. The counterpart to this is that the RNG sometimes produces games that are arbitrarily too easy, even at a higher difficulty setting. Victories achieved this way are unfulfilling. That feeling of unearned victory bleeds over into a suspicion that all of the victories were due to flukes. The interplay of the various game item cards encourages a range of play styles and makes each character feel unique, which is nice. The corresponding downside to this, which we think others have pointed out, is that you are often at the mercy of the RNG and you will wind up often using one or two default strategies based on the first couple items you happen to get. Overall, this game is not particularly difficult. We got to 100% completion on this game in about 3 weeks of casual play. We like the games visual style, and it has a fun dungeon-crawl-throwback aesthetic.

We beat classic and expert mode back to back and it felt like a waste of time. They put no effort into this cash grab. Just drag your card is the whole game.

We will adjust our rating when we can actually play this game, but how is it live and purchasable when there is a bug that literally stops us from getting past the opening screen?

Just bought app and it wont let us enter a user name which is required to get to the menu. Seems broken at the moment. Need refund.

We just happened to check to see if this developer had come out with any new games, and was super excited to see he just came out with this one! We have played all the other games by this developer in the past, and they are always clever and well done. Theyre also always priced fairly with no ads or IAP. And the file sizes are small and they dont drain your battery. And they always save your progress so you can play when you have a short break. Everything is done right. The tutorial is excellent, and this game is quick to learn so you can start playing. Its a really enjoyable mashup of card game and dungeon crawler. We look forward to playing this more and more. Theres lots of variety and replayability here. Thank you developer for doing such a great job and monetizing fairly too. The App Store needs more good guys like you. We highly recommend this game!

^^^ get this! Worth the couple bucks.

Seems simple at first but quickly gets more complex.

Edit_2: No, it wasnt. Score adjusted after several attempts. Edit: Profile name bug was apparently fixed. Score adjusted. Typos in the first few moments of the game. Bugs include: (1) being unable to enter a profile name – problem was solved by typing a letter, closing name box, type another letter, close name box and eventually realize that the name is being entered in backwards (????); (2) overlay bugs – the UI super imposed itself onto some of the text and obscured some words. Played the tutorial. We stopped playing due to impatience.

We still get profile bug. Freezes after we input the first letter on iPad Pro.

This game is like a mini version of slay the spire at such a great price. Theres a ton of randomization and unlockables. The first few runs will end early but keep on playing and youll eventually figure out what you need to smash your way to victory. The only bug we’ve found is sometimes when killing all the baddies on screen it will make the screen go black for a second-I guess to reload new cards. Not sure if thats intended but it doesnt break anything either.

Good game. The cards are the path you travel, choosing your next move is where the strategy comes in.

Wont let us enter a profile name. Tried the trick mentioned in the other review, but it doesnt work for us.
