Frost – Survival card game Reviews

When the developer said this was made with love they meant it. Flawless execution, quirky art style that lets your imagination do the rest, and a simple game mechanic make this a refreshing break from the norm out there. The presentation is also so clean. Do not listen to those who say it is too hard and random. We won our first time through on easy. The randomness is the whole reason there is replay ability. Now Im on the custom setup for our first time through. We have been looking for something like this for awhile now. We love hybrid-style RPGs where you are not having to make 15 small decisions for one larger decision. Its nice to be able to not break the flow and keep the suspension of disbelief going.

Im glad we stumbled upon this game. Even for us as a casual gamer without a ton of time for long gaming sessions, this game is very accessible. The tutorial is really good, and the instructions explain a few more details. Ill have to experiment with the idea cards a bit more to get the hang of them, but otherwise the game is user friendly and intuitive. We love the visual/art design, and the overall concept is really clever. On a smaller device (even an XS Max) you do need to zoom or hold the phone close to see the small text sometimes, but its not so bad as to be a deal breaker. Once we get the hang of things we wont need to zoom anyway probably. This developer did a great job, and priced it so fairly too. We happily support such a great effort; lots of care went into it and it shows. Thank you, developer!

The core gameplay is awesome. This is a really fun rouge-like with great replayability and exciting tension. Im hoping the dev will see this review, because we’ve been unable to reach out for support, but some cards seem broken. Our special survivor types (I.e singer, picker, etc.) all show the fatigue symbol as the activation cost. We didnt really understand how this would work, but when we look at gameplay videos online of the pc version, they have activation costs (like food or wood) that make sense. Not sure if this is a bug, or maybe something we havent unlocked, but its blocking a lot of gameplay for us. Those issues aside, the game is great fun and recommended.

How the heck do you pay an idea for a contest cost? Usually just end up accidentally using our idea cards.

Tutorial is very weak and some cards are hard to read on the phone. Also tends to lock up at times. And it just… Ends, no fanfare or story, which is a letdown. Not a bad game at all, just sooo close to being a great one.

  1. The symbology is the most confusing we’ve ever seen in a game. It makes neither intuitive sense nor is properly explained in the instructions. 2. It makes no sense to have a deck count in the classic game but not in the scenarios. Memorization is not a remotely interesting game mechanic. This really bothers us because deck composition is important. Really bizarre design decision. 3. Consistent but where, at game end, the screen goes white and freezes.

Kinda boring. A lot of effort clearly went in to it but the core gameplay was pretty tedious to us. But the art and presentation is very well done.

Really enjoyed this game and appreciated the updates over the past year or so. Thanks!

The card game itself is great. However there are a number of issues we suspect are at least somewhat mobile specific. It is incredibly finicky to zoom in on a card without playing it, triggering secondary behaviors is not always perfect, and its hard to tell what some cards do because theres no explanatory text. Our biggest complaint might be that there is no cloud backup of your progress, so if you delete the app youve lost everything if you reinstall.

Absolutely unforgivable in an iOS app! Get a phone call, put down the phone off for 5 minutes to do something else and BAM, back to the title screen, all your progress lost. Would be 5 stars, but as of now, LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE!

Great game. If you even slightly like deck builders or resource card games, this is a must. One thing though, the app icon seems to be messed up after downloading. Can you make it look like it does in the store?

We love this. One of our favorite iPad games and definitely our favorite iPad card game. It is challenging, but strategic and fun. There is a luck element too. We love it. It reminds us of Friday and Robinson Crusoe.

This game has great artwork, a really fun atmosphere, simple to learn with some great mechanics, and it almost always boils down to plain skill. Love the setting, love the sounds, love everything about the game! The scenarios are great too. Really love this hidden gem!

We really dont understand the complaint in one of the reviews that the game is too random. That is the purpose of the game. You make choices every step to increase your chances against random events. We are really enjoying Frost. The gameplay really does feel like a survival or a roguelike game where youre not supposed to necessarily win even if you make good decisions every turn. The event cards create a pretty nice diverse gameplay every time you play. Three resources create many combinations for cards to buy within every attempt. We also enjoy the art style that looks like someone has drawn by hand on paper as opposed to creating it entirely on computer. We dont know whether its actually the case but it looks nice. Also the audio is very impressive.

First, the game is almost unplayable on an iPhone because of its small size. The graphics are simply scaled down from the desktop version, and are so small that buttons are very difficult to press and none of the text is readable. We were only able to play because we are familiar with the desktop version of the game. Second, the game is unfairly difficult and ridiculously random. Very often you need to so a random search to acquire resources, and far too often you either get nothing of value in return or your character dies. It’s incredibly frustrating to try to build up resources and come up empty handed. The "easy" difficultly level is insanely difficult. To win you need to perfectly manage your resources and have great luck on your side. This game could be good if it was made much less difficult and had random events be beneficial more often. As it is, it’s an incredibly frustrating experience.

Edit: this game is just too brutally hard. It seems we can only win a scenario if the stars are aligned. Not as much fun to lose and lose and lose. We (used to) really enjoy this. We just wish we were better at it. If you have played Friday, the deck building card game, it is similar. One of the cool things is that as you play more content is unlocked. This is good and bad. As you get comfortable with the game and start winning, it because more complicated. We’re at that point where we’re not quite winning anymore. We’ve had a good run of several games, but now they are getting harder. The app plays well and as expected. Only thing to know is to save a game in progress you will need to press the "?" And select leave game. Otherwise you may lose your place.

We’re just enamored with this game. It’s rough but evocative hand drawn visuals mask a tightly crafted solitaire deck building game. Each game, win or lose, is a satisfying experience that always leaves us wanting more. The base game is fantastic, but we were delighted by the first scenario and can’t wait to see what the others have in store. This one is a keeper!

Frost brings to iOS a great deck builder experience with really difficult scenarios. We are primarily a tabletop gamer. Thought we would rate to give this game more love.

This game is a great challenge and is really immersive. We were originally turned off by the spartan graphics, but it is an awesome app. Great replayability.

This is a very well done, challenging solitaire card building game. We will be playing it a lot along with our other two favorite iOS card games: Star Realms and Ortus Regni. The interface and graphics are appropriate to the theme. Contrary to what another reviewer wrote the tutorial is a good; though it leaves a bit out, it does explain enough of the mechanics to get you started. There’s help for additional details also. There are a few glitches on iPad Mini (text and graphics get cut off in a few non-essential areas), but otherwise the game is nicely polished.

A roguelite survival deck builder? This works amazingly well. The atmosphere is immersive and the tons of progression-based unlocks (no IAP!) mean we’ll be coming back for a very long time. Would love to see the idea developed into a multiplayer cooperative card game (IRL)!

The games amazing we’ve spent countless hours just on endless just seeing how far we can get even after we’ve got all the cards unlocked, they should let us use decrease frost as a button instead of just having us tap on it countless times just to get cards when using frigomancer or even remove fatigue cards. It’s frustrating sometimes maybe add new cards and new special requirements you need to get.

We greatly enjoyed this game however it has become incredibly frustrating due to a bug related to loading saved games. 1) multiple times when we load a saved game the next day, the travel option has disappeared despite the fact that we have already fulfilled the region cards. We can’t keep playing without being able to travel which is the whole point of the game. We’re currently playing the meditator scenario but we can’t progress anymore after traveling 22 times to finish the game because we can’t travel. 2) it doesn’t save the game if you close it without choosing leave game first. Multiple times we closed an ongoing game only to find it disappeared after we opened it again several hours later. These issues have rendered this game unplayable. Please fix these issues as we’re sure these are happening to other players as well. We’re using an iPhone 6s plus and we have the updated version so it’s not due to any of these two reasons.

IPad only game we guess, the cards and font is very small on a non plus sized iPhone. Wasted $4.

We cannot get past the title screen: the app crashes every single time. It’s a shame, because we really wanted to play this game. Is there some way to fix this?

This game looks fun, but the game crashes every time we play the tutorial. Game itself seems to run fine on our iPad 4, but we don’t know what to do or how to play it. So no more than 2 stars until this is fixed.

The game could be amusing but without a description of the game mechanic it is an exercise in frustration. A tutorial lacking a description of how the game works is worthless. If the devs cannot describe the game mechanism in half a dozen declarative sentences the game isn’t ready for the public. What happens to a card when we play it? What does exploration do? Does playing a card consume it?

Sigh. We consider it virtually impossible to give this game a proper review. Like many mobile titles, it seems clear that this was designed with tablets in mind and was simply made available on smaller phone-sized devices. However, the text is essentially unreadable on our iPod Touch 6. It is a pencil-thin font that looks to be about two millimeters high. This is simply not at all reasonable, especially given the vast amount of unused space on the play field. If at some point the designer sees fit to make the game functional on ALL devices for which it is sold, maybe we can actually review it. Until then, we can only assume that if the designer can’t bother to make a functional interface, then this product deserves a poor review.

We guess we’ve been living in a hole as we had not heard of this game before we found it yesterday and we have playing ever since. It’s a really nice little game and well polished. The only issue we’ve found is that the screen rotation on an iPad only allows for one orientation. Certainly fixable with a patch so we will still give it five stars. Very addictive play too.

We have this game on PC and kept bugging the dev to port it to iOS, and boom Weeks later and it’s here! Can’t wait to dive into this.

Very addictive game and also expect to die a lot but in fun way as this is a survival game. As u play more, more cards are introduced which we like because it keeps the game fresh! 2 things need to be corrected. 1 is the orientation which is upside down and need iCloud synch to play on other devices. Thanks!

Another must have card game for your iPhone. Bad*ss!
