Dive into Frosthaven: Official Companion

Frosthaven Companion is a companion application meant to lower the setup time and maintenance while playing Frosthaven. Some of its key features are:

  • Create multiple parties to maintain the state of multiple campaigns at once.
  • Allow for multiple devices to synchronize at the same time, allowing remote play, or everyone around the table to see all stats without sharing their device.
  • Choose which scenario the group wants to play, and the application will automatically set up all the monster stats, monster ability decks, and loot deck for that scenario.
  • Mark each scenario as started or completed, and track your progress.
  • The application supports opening sections in a scenario. Doing so will automatically instantiate the monsters (normal & elite) in that section.
  • At any point you can draw from the Monster or Ally Attack Modifier deck, or from an extra Boss deck.
  • Input the initiative of your heroes and draw Monster Ability cards for each of the monsters. Heroes and enemies will automatically be sorted by initiative, and the ability cards of each monster drawn and revealed.
  • Support for auto calculations of move and attack values on Monster Ability Cards.
  • Maintains the hp, xp, loot, and the various conditions of each of your heroes and monsters easily.
  • Create Summons from your Hero, and track their various statistics.
  • Create NPCs and set their name and hp, as well as their conditions. You can also input their initiative or snooze them.
  • Maintains the status of the 6 Elements.
  • Stop at any point, and resume your session in the state it was when you left.
  • Undo or redo any actions between each round.
  • If you do not want to input player initiatives, you can disable player initiative or even hide players.
  • If you do not want to play a pre-made scenario, create your own custom session by adding any monsters from the game.
  • The app takes into account the majority of the scenario and sections special cards and hp for monsters.

Good app overall. The new keypad for initiative has the numbers in the wrong order though. Can this get fixed?

This app is great. It has all the bells and whistles that are needed and wanted to make the Frosthaven experience amazing. They just came out with an update and it looks like the connectivity issues we had are gone. That being said, a few things we think things that would help are: initiative input should have the option to be masked to other players until the draw button is pushed. (This has been fixed) The ability to randomize the number of the monsters being put on the board (the ability is here to do this but hasnt been implemented into each scenario. It still puts out all the monsters in numeric order. ) The boss deck that was updated doesnt have any detail on it when you click on it (like when you click on the card that was drawn by monsters). They just had an update and it messed up the enemy deck. You can no longer add or curses or bless to the enemy deck. Its weird because it used to work just fine. We hope they fix this. The loot deck is still broken and unusable. They made it so you can see who drew the card but you can look back more than 5 cards so it really doesnt help at all. Otherwise, Really impressed and will continue to use this app.

Unable to add curse and blessings after new update was pushed.

This app is the probably the most optimized way to track battles. Itll take care of monsters and the loot deck, as well as, track initiative order. So it gets points for decreasing setup time. Itll mark which scenarios are completed which is also useful. That said, tracking which scenarios are completed is all it does in regards to campaign tracking. It does not track stickers, completed battle goals, or anything else. So if you bought this hoping it would save you time when switching out stuff for different play groups it will not.

This app works great. We like the sync, counting rounds and handling the elements decaying, and tracking health and conditions. Awesome.

With the update they pushed out since the last time we played Frosthaven, this app has become a perfect companion to the game. Couldnt imagine playing without it.

Coming from the Gloomhaven helper, this app adds a ton of small quality of life improvements. It automatically spawns monsters in new rooms, runs the loot deck, saves characters between sessions. There are a few things that would make this app perfect though. -keep a log of loot cards: Only the last 5 loot cards are visible. It would be nice to keep a log so players could collect their loot after the scenario is complete rather than pause the game to keep track of it. -add an undo feature loot and attack modifier cards: Its easy to draw a modifier by mistake and that is permanent. While theres a log of the last 5 cards drawn it can be annoying to try to back track. And undo function would make that easier. -apply the math from the monster ability and card draw. This might be more of an interface problem. When a card is drawn it covers the screen, obscuring the monster ability card. This requires to toggle between attack modifier draws and ability cards. Not everyone has perfect memory as to which numbers to apply. -add a restart scenario button. Currently the only way to restart a scenario is to leave it and navigate to the same scenario from the scenario list. Which is a bit tedious. -battery life improvements. For what seems to be a pretty simple database app, the battery drain seems rather extreme. Our only guess is that since there is a multiplier component that theres power draw from requesting access to wifi. This seems unnecessary if that specific feature isnt being used by the players. -monster spawns: it would be nice for the app to auto spawn monsters in scenarios where monsters spawn every round, rather than having to do this manually.

We played all weekend using the app on an iPad then cast to a TV. So we did not use sync or multiple devices. It worked great, and really only have a few issues. Overall it was a good experience – really like having the section numbers appear at the top. Summons: its great that the app knows which summons belong to which character. We wish they came with their stats pre-populated. We spent a lot of time adding attack, move, health values to Skeletons. Perhaps we missed something, but that was our biggest complaint. Initiative: there are boots that let a character change their initiative. Also when initiative is tied you change up who goes first. It would be nice to be able to make those changes after initiate is set. Again perhaps we missed something. Scrolling was awkward sometimes, but that was mostly to do with the touch interface. But we got the hang of it.

Pretty good app so far, but we noticed the Monster Attack Deck doesnt reshuffle after drawing a crit or miss. It instead goes through the whole deck before reshuffling. This makes the monster attack deck unusable since it breaking a core balance mechanic of the game. Should be a simple fix though once developers catch it.

We like how it populates scenarios with appropriate monsters, along with automated modifiers, but no such features for characters. Lots of things that could be tracked and applied, but arent. Not as useful as we expected for the hype.

Yet another bugged version from a paid app. Use a free app that is better supported, not this constantly useless broken and very infrequently repaired work from first-time programmers.

The pre-Cephalofair drama Gloomhaven companion app was arguably one of the greatest tech companions of all time. Flawless networking, client-server magic, just all around perfect. This app has none of that. This app has a single state that multiple people can see. Previously everyone entered initiative and it was hidden until the draw phase. Nope! Cant do that apparently its too hard for a professional app studio (its not, someone is just selfish and greedy). Landscape on a tablet and setting which character has gone and not gone is all sorts of messed up. Summons enter with 0 attack, 0 movement, despite default values being fixed. Cant set custom names for characters These are our issues in the first hour of use. Its probable that Ill encounter more issues as we keep playing. Overall its just extremely irritating that we have to deal with this piss-poor app because someones greed and ego were more important than customer satisfaction.

This could be an awesome app but it needs some overhaul to be great. 1. The hero bars are too tall. They could be half the height and you wouldnt lose much visibility 2. You have to tap to pull out the monster attack deck, tap to draw, tap to close the light box, tap to close altogether. All players have to tap their own screen when a card is drawn btw, please fix! To fix, just tap the symbol to pull a card, shows it for a second and then it goes away.. Done! Adding cards to those decks should be be in the drop down menu in the corner since it rarely happens. 3. Get rid of the base stats in enemy bars. They are not needed since each enemy already shows their HP and the cards show the stats you need. Put the add a standee buttons inside the bars along with effect tokens (why are they not there already?). Put the room code and level stats at the bottom in the drop down menu in the corner. Put the add hero, add monster, add npc in the drop-down menu in the corner. App is really snappy and it looks beautiful. Cant justify using it over other apps even if it were free. Keep updating!

People were saying that X-haven is better, at least compared to how this used to be. We are unsure how this app used to be a year ago, however it seems significantly more polished than X-haven now with a few features that doesnt have (ally mod decks) and a slightly cleaner ui.

The companion app really speeds up your setup and tear down time, which increases your play time. The app was very buggy at the beginning, but has been addressing issue and improving the user interface incredibly quickly. We’ve never seen an app improve at this rate. Highly recommend.

It doesn’t really track a campaign, just your scenarios. You still have to track your resources, xp, gold and other stuff on your character and campaign sheets. Not a huge deal. The point of this app for us was to have less things on the table. All monsters, attack modifier deck, and ability cards can be managed through the app when they work. Its buggy. Updates have been released, but were still running into issues where we cant advance after character initiative because the monster abilities wont draw. Weve had to completely remove and add monsters to save the scenario and get things working again.

Despite the other low ratings, we took a stab at this because we wanted something to manage our campaign and make our lives easier. As of writing this review, the the official companion is wholly unusable. We expect this to be corrected promptly, but this is the rating as of today. Getting right to the heart of things, on Scenario 1, while usage isnt as clear as it could be, things began functionally enough on Round 1 and we were able to stumble our way through the first round. Immediately upon entering initiative on Round 2, the monster card draws began and their initiative numbers rolled like slot machines. Forever. Wholly unrecoverable after restarts and everything else you can imagine. Just dead in the water. Fine, well restart and try again. This time on Round 2 draws for the monstersthe game refuses to progress. Now youve drawn successfully for the monsters, but the game wont move forward. The draw button is still lit and you cant tap initiative to move forward with any of the players or monsters despite what cards are drawn or what initiatives are there. If the app cant be trusted to manage the basics without crashing, then how can we trust it not to waste our time and lose all our progress through Round 12. We ended up breaking out the physical components instead and regenerating the current scenario to move on from the app. For a paid and official app, this screams not speaks, volumes about the lack of quality control. We will add on the positive side that the desired state is (somewhat) clear. Im not going to harp on the lack of documentation and such as Id rather have functionality first. There are positive features in here in terms of what the developer wants to do and present. Management of elements, monster and ally decks (at least put in some indicator that the deck is being or has been reshuffled though please), monster health and status, player health/status/xp, round tracking, automation of status effect removals, etcthese are all great features and steps. But none of this matters if your app cant be trusted to allow a team to progress through each scenario without game-ending bugs.

Used this for a few scenarios a couple weeks ago with minor problems (conditions not expiring correctly) but then we tried to use it tonight after the update and found out that we could play Round 1 but when attempting to draw cards for Round 2 it wouldnt flip the monster cards and proceed. Couldnt find a work around of any kind. There needs to be a feedback button somewhere within the app too to report things. If there is one we couldnt find it.

Very helpful with consolidating lots of info/parts into one location. There are still a few issues with the app, but they seem to be working hard on fixing them. 1. The loot deck isnt much use as you cannot assign the loot to a character. 2There are times where the scenario starts and you add monsters after a certain amount of rounds, but you have to manually use the add monster button to add it to your available monster list. 3. There also needs to be a way to upgrade the loot deck.

Looked great and was really exited to use it for our remote gaming group. However, nobody could connect to the session, forcing us to scramble to set up the manual way. We Feel bad that in encouraged our group to spend money on this when it isnt usable.

Looks great and has some nice improvements, however we had a lot of issues with the app making it nearly unusable. – connection issues with online sessions, some devices connected fine, others sad invalid room. This even happened with the same device, started out fine and then started having problems – battery use seems really high – resuming from a Lock Screen seemed to cause app to get out of sync and start having connection problems – monster attack modifier deck and loot deck lost all their cards and we couldnt get them to work and had to start using the physical decks – would be nice if boneshaper (and any) summons were loaded with their default stats rather than 0.

If this app was free we would give it two star. The original Gloomhaven Helper was light years ahead of this app and we got it when it was free. The other current helper apps are better as well. But here we thought the official Frosthaven app from Cephelofair would at least be decent, but NOPE we were wrong. This app seems more like a quick cash grab than an actual helper. Will be switching back to X-haven app.

We think this app looks great but its v frustrating to use during scenarios right now. Im hoping the latest version will fix some of the most annoying issues like cards being stuck, not showing actual shield values and not being able to assign monster numbers. If youre used to the Gloomhaven Helper app, youll be missing a lot of features that were there like auto removal of statuses, being able to change character name etc etc adding / subtracting health & xp is also really fiddley where you dont get any kind of confirmation, its easy to over or under add those numbers. Also, even if you all have the app and connect, initiative is NOT hidden which is annoying when its supposed to be hidden/secret. We really like the networking code function vs having to configure the server but we had some really weird bugs where 2 of us actually saw different card draws and initiatives than our 3rd player for one round while playing. We had to leave and rejoin to fix. And then adding new monsters during a round was messed up where they did not get slotted into the correct initiative order. In some ways it seems like more work to use the app than to play manually.

We had all the members in our group purchase the app, only to find out we couldnt get the online play to work. Rather than pass around a single phone all night we ended up setting up the physical components. Quite a brave move to force other developers to shut down their helpers only to sell an inferior one at a remarkably high price.

Youve had 3 years to make a better app. The old app was made by volunteers and doesnt have bugs and missing cards like this! What a Shame. This app rarely connects properly, requires internet for multiplayer, and has so many bugs and mistakes that you cannot trust it to function. Worthless.

We cant wait to use this for our first session in a couple of weeks. This app has by far improved upon some of the annoyance the Gloomhaven app has. Not complaining, just more of a matter of preference. The mobs are added, including the amount of said mobs, based on number of players is huge. Tracking multiple parties for multiple games going on, huge! We look forward to fixing in further but for now, 5 stars well earned.

Pros 1) Aesthetically, an improvement over the Gloomhaven Helper App for the previous game. 2) The party feature is a nice direction. This is a great place to improve upon as well since there are so many things to track at a party/game level. It would be nice if more aspects of the party/town could be tracked in the App as well. Things like moral, resources, and maybe even buildings might be worth having in App. Cons 1) Drains battery life at an unacceptable rate. A fully charged iPad Pro lasted 2 and 1/2 hours. We had to switch to the free app in the middle of playing. 2) Generally unresponsive and slow in-game interface. Things like adding/subtracting health feel very unresponsive and mushy. More feedback such as a visual +1 then +2 appearing when healing would make the user experience much better. Also, the clicks dont always register if done too quickly. This is a massive annoyance when dealing with lots of healing and damage. 3) Adding status effects is far too clunky. Adding a poison to an enemy requires three separate clicks, and the user interface will have to shift around wildly during this time. First you have to click on the monster category (instead of the unique monster, which for some reason only allows you to heal or damage it), then select the individual monster from the list after it has opened, and then find the condition in the next menu. This is silly. We should be able to add conditions without opening all these menus. 4) The party creation literally does not allow you to break the rules and have 5 people play. Our group often has an extra player who tags along, and we just raise the difficultly to compensate. We can not add this person to the party inherently. 5) The random assignment of numbers to each monster is just annoying. We would much rather pick ourselves since the physical components are not as easy to assemble as clicking a digital button. 6) There are currently some strange bugs around the number assignments to monsters. Opening the list showed two monsters of the same type with the same number, but that monster disappeared when the list was collapsed. 7) The draw decks really shouldnt be tucked to the sides like that. Im not sure if Im missing an option to pull them out permanently, but two clicks to do something that we are constantly doing is more annoying than just one click. 8) Generally speaking, the interface moves around too much with all these expanding lists and menus. It may seem like an aesthetically good choice, but the effect on practical use is bad. Moving more toward little pop out style interfaces to add things like conditions or make changes to monsters would be better. Every time the screen shifts we have to relocate the things we were working on editing. 9) Hitting on point #8 again, allow for exp and health to be adjusted by sliding left/right at the button location. This is a feature we have sorely missed from the old Gloomhaven Helper days. Overall, Im hoping that this App can become a centerpiece of our play since it is the official App and shows future promise, but currently it is easily beaten by the free option.

We trust this app will eventually get where it needs to be, but disappointed that the official app (that everyone at the table needs to buy) lacks significant functionality and ultimately does not do nearly as well as the multiple other free apps. We repeatedly get crashes when trying to host games or connect.

Added much needed functionality, but conditions will auto expire at the end of the round only to reappear at the start of the next round. Are you guys testing this stuff before you roll it out the door?

Its all very pretty. But you cant name your characters and status effects need to be manually changed For 8 dollars, youd expect the app to know how a single round works when it comes to stun/disarm/etc The current state of this is a little underwhelming, especially since all your friends have to pay for it too.

This app has a lot of things going for it. Connecting with other devices was easy, but there was some syncing issues. When marking a scenario as complete after using the app, it leaves the blue flag marker for continuing a scenario. We wish that would clear. They are on the right track ability to track your completed quests. Tracking unlocked quest would be nice as well. When flipping monster modifiers, you cant see the attack and the modifier at the same time, which just takes some getting use to. Adding conditions isnt the easiest since you dont do it in the same place as marking damage. Id also love condition reminders. Especially for monsters with innate abilities like the snow imps brittle. As others have mentioned, landscape mode would help for tablets. All in all, we love the aesthetics of the app. It removes a ton of the burden associated with Frosthaven.

Missing too many features and polish from a well know game developer. This is absolutely not worth 7.99 in its current form.

Pro: networking mostly worked, though we did hit a few sync issues that we resolved with restarts. Con: 1) randomly generates enemy standee numbers instead of letting us choose. We can see why this might be useful, but were accustomed to drawing randomly from he standee bag. 2) does not reorder characters/monsters by initiative when adding monsters after doors are opened. 3) some actions require one tap more than you would expect. For example: we can add an enemy with one tap, but adding a summon requires tapping through a confirmation dialog. 4) previously drawn attack modifier cards are displayed at the top of the screen, covering element statuses. Clearing the display of these cards requires an unintuitive two tap sequence. 5) The top section, which contains scenario title, elements status, and section controls, takes up way too much space, especially since we cant rotate into landscape or change font size. We have an iPad mini. It seems like this was designed by someone who uses a pro.

Missing features that GHS or the old helper had. Just use Gloomhaven Secretary instead.

Great for handling initiative and monster card tracking but its got some issues right now. – started a 3 player campaign and it auto assigned monsters and boss health as if we were a 2 player party – recent modifier deck overlay persisted and we have to reopen the monster modifier deck to make it go away – connecting to an online session was flakey and we had a player unable to change items after a bit – a monsters health adjustment ended up frozen and we couldnt change them. Had to delete and recreate – mobile app keeps making players rejoin of the app loses focus Doesnt feel great that its a paid app, officially supported, and buggy out of the gate.

Active bugs and missing critical functionality: 1. If you at any point switch apps you may be disconnected from the server. Once disconnected you cannot reconnect making the app unusable. 2. The undo button sometimes works, and sometimes is greyed out and does nothing. It is extremely frustrating. 3. The armor value for enemies is not provided. None of this mentions the numerous ui annoyances. Drawing an attack modifier results in blocking the screen for all players until they acknowledge it. The buttons are extremely small and there is considerable delay when clicking them. There is no landscape mode. This app is poorly made. It makes promises it does not keep. Im sure the devs cared about the game and the community, but at this point this app is closer to a scam than anything else. If the devs want to improve the community they should either take this app down, or need to do dramatic work to make this app workable, and live up to the promises in the app description.

The app its self is functional, but it needs polishing. No land scape mode when running on an iPad, 8$ is a bit much GH Helper was only 5$ and free if you were on Android. This app needs a lot of work. When trying to connect other devices the host device gives a 5 digit code all the devices state Code should be 6 characters. We have really riled to give this app a shot, but if feels really poorly executed. Ill be switching X-Haven Assistant.

This app is horrible. The Gloomhaven app was seamless. We need the other app maker to fix this one.

This is astoundingly terrible for a paid official app. At best, its clunky. The list of things that dont work well let alone at all, exceed our interest in listing them out.

We love the look of this app – but it most definitely feels like the beta version. So far, weve used it twice. The things we really liked: 1. Big clear symbols 2. Great hi-resolution art 3. Really slick look Things that arent so great: 1. No horizontal mode on tablets – this means you have to do a lot of scrolling to see all enemies. 2. A lot of ui elements seem too big on a table – they seem more suited for the small screen of a phone. 3. A couple little bugs – when we started the scenario, the monster standee numbers were added in seemingly randomly and not 1, 2, 3, etc Additionally, when we went to the second section, the new monsters were added in, but their initiatives were not re-ordered, leaving them out of place at the end of the line-up. With a couple of small bug fixes and a horizontal mode, wed definitely give this app 5 stars – but in its current state, it definitely feels like a beta version. At the moment, x-haven still feels like the more reliable solution for tablets.

Everything looks nice but trying to use a small phone is tough. We really dont want to have to buy an entirely new device just for a bigger screen when we already have a Mac.

Title says it all. App launch screen appears, then app crashes.

Landscape mode is vital, as others have mentioned. Im also disappointed in the campaign tracking, or lack there of. Theres no way to indicate what scenarios are open or locked, which means we will have to maintain a separate list. Theres also no way to track our current team and levels, to determine scenario level automatically. There also seems to be no way to log retired characters. There was a great app to use as a base of what people wanted, and it doesnt seem to be taken into account at all.

Not usable until the undo button works. One team member accidentally ended the round and then we had no idea what the monsters were doing during the current round. Also for some of the monsters it doesnt show 2 shield, just has the shield icon.

Tried to have other join a running session just to get wrong code errors 3 times out of 4.

Love the look and function of this app, it does what it says on the tin and makes the game a lot faster to set up and play. Some additional features seen on the old Gloomhaven Helper would take this new app to the next level: 1) Landscape mode for tablets sitting on a rest so everyone at the table can see. Most tablet cases dont allow the tablet to stand up in portrait orientation. 2) Would love to see the ability to touch-and-drag hero portraits to arrange them in initiative order rather than punching in the numbers for every player. 3) Touch-and-drag for quick HP adjustment on all figures would also be great.

Completely unusable until a landscape orientation mode is implemented.

When Im using an app for a game, we want to be able to view the app on our iPad while it sits horizontally in a stand on the game table. Unfortunately, this Frosthaven companion app has no horizontal (landscape) view available. For us, this makes the app unusable. We dont want to have to pick up our iPad or iPhone every time we need to make a change in the app. It looks like there are some cool features here. However, this design oversight by the developers means we will never use this app and we just wasted $8. Another fail is the monster modifier deck. When you draw cards, there is no indication of how many cards are remaining in the stack. The number of cards remaining in the modifier deck can be an important strategy element.

The app is currently re-shuffling monster decks immediately after crits or +2 are drawn. Need to address as this does not match the rules. Should be at the end of round.
