A Glimpse into Game Master 5th Edition

Take command of your Dungeons & Dragons game with Game Master 5th Edition. This DM tool makes building a campaign easy and takes a lot of the hassle of out of running a game so that you can focus on more important things.

Combat Tracker. Roll initiative, track hit points and conditions, view monster stat blocks, and roll attacks, all in an easy to use interface. No need to flip through the Monster Manual or roll and add up a bunch of dice. You’ll be able to leave your books at home because Game Master has what you’ll need.

Encounter Builder. Quickly put together an encounter, including one with randomly generated enemies. The encounter analyzer calculates the difficulty so that you won’t accidentally TPK the party.

Creature Builder/Scaler. Easily create a new creature or modify an one. Specify a few stats, such as challenge rating, ability scores, hit dice, etc… and the app will auto generate the rest of the numbers and text for you.

DM Screen. The rules reference view lets you quickly look up rules, tables, etc. This view is completely customizable and can even include links to external websites.

Campaign Manager. Split your campaign into adventures, each with their own sets of characters and encounters. Also keep notes and a treasure items that you can send out to your players.

Dice Roller. All of your stats and attacks can be rolled with a tap of a button. Also included is dice calculator that allows you to input a custom roll. Need to roll 1d20 + 6d9 + Constitution modifier? Game Master has what you need.

Compendium. A customizable compendium of content that by default includes all of the races, classes, backgrounds, feats, equipment, spells, and the monsters from the System Reference Document 5.1. This does not contain all of the official content from the books so you’ll have to input any missing. To make adding easier, there is an Import feature through which you can type/copy content on your PC then transfer the file into the compendium. Fan made files are also available for download, so search online.

Fight Club Integration. Players using the Fight Club 5th Edition app can send their characters to you in the form of an importable file so you can quickly include them in any campaign.

Compatibility. This app is designed to be played with D&D 5e, but many elements of it can be used for other tabletop RPGs, such as D&D 3.5e and Pathfinder RPG. And of course, because everything can be completely customized, any homebrewed content is also possible.

Premium Version. The app is free to download, but you are limited creating a single campaign with one adventure and up to three encounters. Upgrading to the premium version with the in-app purchase will remove these restrictions.

We cannot recommend this app enough, including the premium version. While there is a steep learning curve to learning all the different aspects of this app, once you have played around enough and experimented you’ll find that it is capable of so much. We use this to run several campaigns. It makes running encounters super simple, keeping track of initiative, cooldown abilities, and HP/AC for monsters. And if you have a question about a spell or treasure, you can look it up within seconds from the compendium. We have added a bunch of monsters manually from 5e expansions. There are a couple of flaws with it but overall we find it easy. First we would ask for the option to customize the lists of damage/terrains/languages. We would also like the ability to track Legendary Actions per round (like there are for recharge abilities such as breath weapons). Second, we occasionally get a glitch where when we are adding vulnerabilities/resistances/immunities, acid is added to vulnerabilities for no reason. In other cases, when we select condition immunities stunned/unconscious, they do not save and we have to type them in manually. Aside from these issues, we think this is a fantastic tool for DMs to run games with efficiency.

Im honestly really impressed so far with the wealth of information this app makes readily available. Its made creating and managing the general outline of our campaign much easier, and makes us a much more prepared DM than we otherwise would have been. Definitely great, even if only used to give you a general framework.

We are in quarantine,(sarcastic yay). We like D&D and was looking for a way to break the boredom. We went online to find some character creators, but all of them were too complicated to use, or had Addons to get most classes. So we turned to the apple App Store, and found this. This app has many great features(Now we sound like a mobile game add sorry) -Simple to use -Non-restrictive customization(Not restricted to what the app has. If it doesnt have some classes you can just say that your an artificer) -FREE HOMEBREW -Add dice rolls(allows you to see what you need to role -Play along(lets you manage hit points, even add to them with temporary ones, level up, and roll dice. Along with letting you exchange and use spell slots) -(Almost)No in-app purchases(This app has one which costs, like, 0.99 cents, which just lets you make multiple campaigns, but you arent limited to how many things you can put in a single campaign so…) -Full customization(Can customize new enemies, MAGICALweapons, adventurers, dungeons, encounters, and treasure. If you made it this far, which is farther than we ever have, just get this game. Its good and not-boring. If you need more proof here is a potato.

Really a great app once you learn how to use it to its full potential. Takes some patience. Wish there was just a bigger area for storing rules, for example we enjoy using a lot of homebrew supplements and would be great if we could store them in app for quick reference. Also, we would like to see the potions having its own sub category as well as adding one for Food and Drink once youve gotten as many items in the game as we have, or even just the all the official D&D items in the compendium, things begin to get very crowded.

There are only two things we really have an issue with. Firstly, it would be nice if there was a battle map add-on. Maybe it would need to be purchased, we dont know. But it would be fantastic to have. And secondly, we would love a way to add conditions to the roll down menu, most of the important conditions are there, but not [slowed] or [Hasted], even being able to log reduced speed (like with Ray of Frost) would be helpful in complicated battles. -Gripes aside, we really like the app and recommend it for $4. You might need to manually add in some spells or monsters, but its a fantastic way to test out the difficulty of an encounter before throwing it at your party. We’ve been using it as a sort of game in of itself, building a party and then building encounters to throw them against.

This has basically everything a Dungeon Master needs! The only problems we have are that there are quite a few monsters missing from the bestiary and the spell slots for humanoid spell-casters are completely wrong (I had to go in and fix all the spell-casting NPC’s). These are minor complaints, though. This is a great app!

We never write reviews but this app was so good we decided to write one. It does everything that we need as a DM. We can write out all of our encounters before the session starts and then use them if we need them as our players adventure. We can also generate quick encounters for when we want to surprise the party with a random encounter. There is also quick access to a compendium, dice roller and rule reference. The free version comes with enough to try out all the features but limits the amount of content you can add. The unrestricted version is $3 USD and is a one time purchase which we think is more than fair. Its so much better than paying a monthly subscription like every other app on the App Store. Overall we definitely recommend this app.

This thing is SO GOOD. We needed a place to put together custom creatures and encounters, and not only is this app amazing for that, it runs on our laptop too so we can run everything off that. We can add our maps as notes, we can make a magic item list for different adventures, everything is very well organized and intuitive. Adding creatures to the compendium is easy, which is great because we like to throw weird stuff at our players. If we had one wish, it would be that we could attach magic items to character sheets, which doesnt seem possible at the moment. Wishing aside, this app is perfect. So worth the premium buy, too, btw.

We love D&D and we’ve sunk way too much money into this hobby. Books, cards, PDFs, dice towers, minis. That being said, this app is honestly the only thing we truly need to run a game we recommend it to every aspiring Game Master we meet.

We have been dming for over three years and have paid for a lot of programs none of which we have enjoyed quite as much as this app. Im a dm that likes to add monsters from other monster books by kobold and this app lets us add and balance them to create memorable and difficult encounters for the party. We believe this app can be utilized by all styles of dming because we know our style has changed significantly over the year we have had this app. One last recommendation is we would check out the book skyflurish return of the lazy dm. LESS IS MORE!

We have used this app for years and years. We have used tons of other tools like Roll20 and Foundry, but always end up creating most of the adventure right here and using it to supplement the virtual tabletop Im using.

We’ve been using this for years but never took time to review until now. Its proven an easy way for us on an iOS phone to quickly easy map out campaign arcs with maps and notes and lore, and build encounters fast. We can use existing creatures, customize them or create our own npcs or creatures with photos, descriptions, stats with all their dice roles (init, saving throws, attacks, damage (half, roll, max shown on all), built in for us to just click during the encounter.) This app and discord are our primary game tools. Our players do not see this app at all. And we dont even put them it. This is not a map generator for your players. Encounter Plus Is good for that on iOS. It can do way more than we use it for. But Im at the end of a multi-year, 20-level campaign, comprised of 17 adventures each with numerous encounters. And we’ve used this on every encounter. It is not perfect. But none of the tools we’ve found yet are. But this is definitely worth trying.

Best app we’ve ever downloaded, super useful.

This is great for solo setups. Maybe a journal would be a cool idea as Im adventuring.

First we want to say GREAT app but one problem there arent beholders and specters In the bestiary.

This app is awesome for and DM.

We can’t imaging DMing without Game Master. Combat just flows, and can’t love this app more. Thank you a gazillion, Dev(s).

Absolutely amazing and fairly easy to use. The only thing we wish it had was the ability to put encounters in folders so we could sort them regionally and just roll a die to pick one.

Can we get on the next update the ability to adds damage types because we run a Star Wars 5e and we cant figure a transfer from the books to this app and would like to make it more streamlined.

We haven’t gotten to play around with this app very much just yet, like what we have used so far though. Is it possible to add our own monsters into the app?

The only thing we wish it had was a way to add creatures that werent in the app already. If there is a way to manually put one in we cant find. Other than that we absolutely love it. Already bought the paid version.

This app is okay for creating and writing campaigns on, but we mainly utilize it for encounter tracking. Its just so simple to create an encounter, and thats why we highly recommend this app for any DM who is looking for an easy way to create said encounters.

This app is amazing and super easy to use and set up real quick and easy adventures and fast encounters. However; theres a lot of spells, items, classes, and races missing and its be really nice if they were added cause Im tired of copying stuff over from Google.

Im not sure if it was an update or something, but all of our monsters have been changed to 1 hp. Now we can go into each one and change the health to what it is supposed to be, but it would take a lot of time. Just wondering if this could be fixed. Otherwise, thanks for a wonderful app!! We are using it for a couple of our campaigns and it is really useful!

We have been a DM for many years and have tried a number of ways to keep track of our NPCs and encounters. This app is very intuitive and has a good way to organize encounters and NPCs. It does take a bit of time to enter the NPCs (as should be expected) but it comes with a compendium of monsters to easily move and modify 5E monsters to make it as easy as possible. We have only used this a few times and our only recommendation so far to get to 5 stars is to make it possible to change an adventure NPC to a campaign NPC and visa versa. The icing on the cake would be adding functionality to be able to organize a campaign but we think that is asking too much from one app!

The app is great. However Lions Den no longer supports this app. The last update was two years ago. We tried reaching out on the app store, as well as facebook. Still havent heard anything back from them. So if you purchase the full version like we did, and theres a problem, tough luck.

We love to use this app as we are a tech dm who uses living Battle maps on a tv and love everything at our fingertips. Our only issue with this app is the lack of a complete compendium for spells and creatures. One would assume that it would at least have all of the creatures and monsters in the monster manual and spell list from the base version of lists. However, this is not true. When your are using all the latest official content that has been released, you find yourself having to add EVERYTHING. We feel that if this app released an update adding these things to it, that it desperately needs, it would make building complex enemies and NPCs to the game more of an enjoyable process then it currently is. Every week we find myself taking more time to add things into the app manually than it takes to plan out the next session. Do not let this sway you away from using this app, as the functionality and intuitive interface is spectacular. We just wish it had more content within it.

Surprisingly we can’t find any other app that does what this does: let us make a campaign, make encounters and add characters/enemies, estimate challenge level, etc. But more than 3 encounters and it’s behind a paywall. If editing an enemy’s CR also edited their stats (for example a 3 cr mammoth has the same hp as 6 cr mammoth), and if the players had level advancement, we might have considered paying the $3, but it doesn’t. We were only on for about 10 mins and we’re sure there are many other functions we would be disappointed not to see after paying. It’s nice to write out all your stuff on paper and transfer it here for quick reference, but if you’re homebrewing or dm’ing for the first time we don’t recommend.

If you are working on a encounter and accidentally close the page all the progress/things youve written gets deleted, which is extremely annoying and has ruined a few of the encounters we’ve written. Other than that its a great app, and if they fix this its an easy five star.

We hate how it doesnt autosave, and you can easily delete all of your progress, Im getting sick of it, we’ve redone our campaign 5 times and it just got deleted again… Hours of our time down the drain…

We finally figured out how to use the app and it actually does everything we want it to. So we purchased the full version. After figuring out how to use the system we loaded our Spelljammer campaign into the system. We had to create creatures for it, but thats how the game is played. We went to run the campaign for our kids and . . . . The entire campaign was missing! Our backups cant be parsed! We cant reliably use it. We see from the FB page that there were some issues with copyright. Therefore, one cannot fault the developer for only including open rules content. Im happy to put our own stuff in, but need to know that Ill be able to keep our work. If the app gets updated, Its a five star app worth more that the initial purchase price. But until then Id save your money and save your time. If the project has been abandoned it would be good to know before spending on it, but, we hope that it does get picked up again because its a really great tool.

Being able to get everything set up ahead of time makes this a great tool for any DM. We’ve recently finished DMing COS using primarily this app to run any combat encounter. Its proved vital.

This app includes everything you need to play dnd for free except the rule books themselves. Spells, monsters, items, etc, and it allows you to create your own!

The only improvements we would like to see are a hyperlinked note taking (that would take you to a specific entry in the adventure) and random table generation. Fantastic tool. We’ve used it for 3 campaigns now.

As a nearly permanent DM, we greatly enjoy this app. Not only does it allow you to lay out your encounters, but our favorite aspect of the app is allowing you to write out and create your own classes, spells, monsters, and magic items, etc.! Our primary use for it is to write down all the ideas for magic items that spontaneously sprout in our mind, or challenge myself to expand our mind by customizing so many a day to broaden our horizon of magical ideas while creating our world. We only bookmark our own creations so we can easily access our own personal list of items! Highly recommended for any DM!

This app is more than we could have dreamed of!!!!!!!! We cannot believe it. This is without a doubt the best game for creating Dungeons and Dragons Campaigns.

This app is so good its probably the reason we wont be leaving iOS anytime soon. Its just so good. It makes it easy to create, organize, tweak, and take with us anywhere we go our campaigns. As someone who plays in person its a lifesaver as a DM. Hell of a thing to have for a boring deployment.

Its been very helpful when it comes needing information and cheap. Dont need dice if you are starting new. Does al the math and if you have the other app you transfer PC or NPC. Highly recommend it.

We use this app and it’s great, the UI is very user friendly and it’s really easy to organize your campaigns with it. We use it for all the campaigns we write to keep notes and encounters grouped up and it’s just overall a great app.

This is a really great app, very easy to use and accessible. We’ve recommended it to friends and they all loved it! However, now in 2020 our DM whos ogling over Pathfinder 2e is trying to reboot our campaign of 2 years into 2e which we cant find a great character app for. As happy as we are with this app and will forever use it whenever we play other sessions this is more of a plea for help and ask the developers of this app if you guys could please make one like this for Pathfinder 2e? Id really appreciate it and so would our table! Please and thank you.

Im not the best DM but this is worth every penny and was created with the dm in mind. We’ve been able to keep our adventure together thanks to this!!!

This app is awesome it is great at tracking combat. It also helps with the other skills and rolls and things. The only improvement we can think of is integration with d&d beyond where we keep our character. Like if you could link the character in beyond with the character in this app. Thats our two cents and this app is awesome.

GM5 is great and all,but there are 2 tiny problems. One is that the compendium isnt the full d&d compendium like when we looked for lizardfolk chief it didnt come up. There are also more things that didnt come up,so that was frustrating. Also, they dont have stuff from Mordenkainens tomb of foes and Volos guide 2 monsters. BUT,it is a great game and it really helped us with DMing. Its probably the best DM app, since u can make rolls ON ur mobile device, but one warning! U can only create 1 campaign until u get premium. Though, overall,my fav DMing app ever.

Hey we love the app and it revolutionized how we DM our game. We love it for tracking initiative and HP. Plus its very easy to quickly look up actions and make rolls for anything you need. Couldnt suggest it more, however recently the app seemed to have deleted itself along with notes for a campaign thats been going on for a year. Not sure what happened. Luckily we have most of our notes on google docs.

Four stars, would be five but you have to manually enter stats for every character, every ability score individually. And you cant add custom ability scores so having to enter it manually is pointless to begin with.

We’ve been using this app for years, and we have almost no problem with it. The only issue is that we cant get all the details from the books without an outside source. Other than that? 10/10, would recommend!

Nice compendium but Id like more automation in character creation.

Good program, however must give it three stars because notes cant be rearranged and new notes cant be inserted between older notes. Ordering these notes and inserting new ones in the right places is the key to running a good custom adventure. We dont want to delete all our old notes simply to put a new note among them in the right order. Seems a simple thing…

The app all in all isnt bad, but they arent updated with all the books so we find myself having to add 99% of our content in. Also, its not possible to make a playable NPC without a cr, as though theres a character.

Im on an iPhone 8 and bought the pro versions of GM 5 and FC 5. Great for tracking encounters, player stats, and Building campaigns. We would love to see a couple quality of life improvements to get the final two stars. – exporting/importing, this is kind of a process and would be nice if we could just update the data files and not have to import to both apps every time. Either that or have the apps share a directory on our phone so an update on one will track in the other. – GM 5 PC stats, they dont track spell slots or learned spells, so its really hard to track if our players have already used spells or easily read the effects for myself. We could switch apps, but there is already a space in the app for tracking spells, so it should be easy to include that data.
