Kemono Mahjong Reviews

If you were to download one legit Mahjong game, this would be the one. Great presentation, music, instructions, and gameplay. We hope this one stays on the App Store for a long long time.

We use this app to get better at mahjong without waiting for a game online. Its extremely fun and challenging at the same time. We would highly recommend it if you love Japanese mahjong as much as we do.

Got into mahjong with Final Fantasy XIV, then let our sub expire. Got this app and can’t stop playing. We might be addicted. It’s a very accessible app, very well put together, everything I’d expect. Also it’s rare that a mobile app ever successfully convinces us to buy its merch. Looking forward to those adorable characters on some cards :) It’s a travesty how few ratings this has. It’s truly top tier riichi mahjong and we look forward to many more hours losing to a wolf.

Super fun and easy way to start!

This app can not be landscaped when we play on iPhone. Please add the setting on the next update.

Great tutorials and scoring explanations. Much closer to board play than other games. Needs a UI setting for iPhone X and up, discard button is a little too close to the home bar.

We love the design and tutorials. Very colorful and beautiful. Everything is perfect.

Fun, easy to hop in and out of, good support for all screen sizes that we’ve tried. The list of games we install on every iOS device is pretty small (this game, Frotz, Simon Tatham’s Portable Puzzle Collection, Pathos: Nethack Codex, and Stardew Valley), but its very worthy of a spot on anyones device. Id love to see more women as potential opponents (women appear to make up under 1/3 of the total), but the roster is already very good overall, with plenty of unique characters. (I wouldnt say no to more guys either though, haha)

Last year we decided that we really wanted to learn how to play Riichi Mahjong – mostly as a result of getting into playing it in FFXIV. Not only is Kemono Mahjong a great app for playing, but it’s ideal for novices looking to learn or improve. The interface has easily tappable entries for scoring to help you familiarize yourself with the game’s terminology as well. All of these features (not to mention the super cute art!) make Kemono Mahjong easily one of the best mahjong apps we’ve tried, and one that we greatly recommend to beginners and advanced players alike.

Tried to learn how to play mahjong in online lobbies with discard timers and overbearing hint systems. Turns out its way easier against bara furry bots who knew?

Great game for anyone who wants to learn Mahjong!

Best tutorial for the rules we have found so far!

This is a 5/5 app to learn Riichi mahjong, it has a great UI, it shows you how the scoring is done at the end by breaking it down, there is a reference for yaku that you can see it at any time. We were a beginner and the tutorial helped us learn the game. Im not a huge fan of the animal theme but the mechanics and the game itself is solid enough that it is worth buying even if you dont like the theme like us.

Very hard to tell what tile may be called as it is almost solid white on our iPad Air 2. We keep turning the screen as in portrait mode the tile is a little bigger. Major flaw with something very fundamental yet there is great attention to detail with everything else.

We bought this app for the first time before we switched to an iPhone, and it was just about the first app that we got once we did switch. The AI is not too bad really, and the differences between the computer characters adds a nice bit of variety. All the art assets (backgrounds, character icons, voice lines, etc.) are far beyond what we would have ever expected from a mostly single player mahjong app. Being able to pause a game and come back to it later is great, since this game is the one we always go to during brief periods of downtime. The developer is active, responsive, and very nice :)

Pros: Really cool, easy to use, fun to play. Negs: Cant play while screen is sideways, tile bugs while calling (gets really annoying having to go to the setting and back just to have the tile appear) Overall: Good app. Wish there was a bit more content (character personality, side games, etc), and small UI bugs were smoothed out.

The latest update, as another review said, has made the AI turns slower than before. We would also like to see the old tiles added to the possible tile styles, as Im not a big fan of the current tile faces.

After the new update, the dealings are very slow.

Great app to learn and play. Question we have for developer is that we are Unlocking new characters as we win but we dont know where to find them.

The character art is good, the voice acting is good, and the AI is interesting and varied. Its also much easier to tap on the right tile in your hand than we expected (on an iPhone X, at least). We came into this game as an intermediate riichi mahjong player so we havent tried the tutorials, but even so its a lot of fun to just play against the AI. And thank goodness for paid apps with no ads! Well worth the few dollars it cost. With the tutorial content we imagine its an incredible deal for novice players. We appreciated the ability to use classic tiles without any assisting letters or numbers, since thats what Im used to playing with. Same thing for the setting to display the Japanese names of the yaku! Im just used to it so we really appreciate the ability to see it. We have two feature requests: The ability to toggle on three red 5s, and the choice to start a hanchan with 25000 points instead of 30000. The starting points especially is quite minor, and the game is so well done we wouldnt imagine taking stars off this review because it doesnt have these features.

This game is amazing and the tutorials made getting up to speed effortless. We appreciate how much effort the dev has spent trying to explain and elucidate the intimacies of this game. We dont love the furry art style but thats a small complaint for such a great game. Wishlist: – better indication of why Im in furiten. We still get confused about this. – local multiplayer. Allow us to pass our phone to someone next to us 5 stars and much deserving. Just get this game. Cant wait to see online get rolled out!

We have no one to play yakuman with irl but at least we can play with some well-designed AI. Only downside is we tend to play really aggressive specifically on this app because of our feelings of human supremacy over robots, but hey its cool to experiment. We like looking at our stats too.

We really enjoy this app and want to give it five stars but when we opened the app after the most recent update we found all our data and unlocked characters gone and our settings were reset.

This has been a go-to game for us lately. Its got very good presentation and explains terms and riichi rules very well. Presentation is nice with good sound effects and music.

Its not bad but we cant play this because to pieces especially the opponents are way too unessesarily small on our iPhone X. We have perfect eyesore too.

Even after reading online tutorials, we still had trouble grasping how Japanese Mahjong worked. The tutorial is fantastic and you can always go back to chapters to brush up on concepts if youve been away from the game a while. We’ve been gifted a Mahjong set, but until we can find 3 more local players, this is the way to get our practice in! Solid UI and good selection of AI opponents. The only thing we would add is a learning mode that displays the name of the hand once you reach it or the hand that is most probable with current tiles. That would help a ton to keep from getting confused when becoming Furiten. This is a big request, so no stars removed. A great game!

Very nice implementation and interface. The yaku list is well laid out. Playing can help you learn the game so you can play with others!

Nice layout that is more clear than mahjong layouts trying to simulate a real table. The tutorials on this app are very helpful in general. We found furiten and richi a little confusing even after the explanation. (I spent a couple games trying to have no tiles in both our hand and in our discard pile.) Link to contact developer is broken because the firm doesnt appear. Also, there should be some female avatars. We usually play mahjong with women, so it feels very weird to have only male players.

Got this to support the kemono games. However the way of visual set ups is really weird for a majhong player, and although its really nice to have voice lines, its pretty weird to hear it other than the original Japanese pronunciation, ponn is fine, but ron and riichi sounds weird the way they say it.

This game does a great job of covering the rules of mahjong and providing quick and easy references for use during gameplay. A definite recommendation to anyone interested in riichi mahjong!

The Japanese version of Mahjong is more challenging and more complex. This game has a strong tutorial and fun game play. We love it.

We love this app, it gives a nice tutorial to beginners and allows you to play matches on the go! Although we’ve found a couple bugs, the devs were quick to respond on Twitter, and very friendly. This game is a great start for anyone trying to learn the game, and we wholeheartedly recommend it!

We’ve never played real mahjong before it’s really fun and interesting to learn!

This is a nice little mahjong game, but we have encountered a pretty bad bug: when we were on our 12th round of our very first game, the game soft locked – it will not continue the game, and even if we start a new game it still will not start. We had to uninstall and reinstall the app to get past the soft lock. I’d imagine the soft lock would happen again anyway at some point. If you could look into this issue that would be great! EDIT: we played the game some more for the rest of the day and we have not encountered any problems so far, so the softlock issue was probably just a glitch in our part. We have updated the review. Great work guys!!

Our biggest concern with this app when we first saw it was whether or not there was a tutorial. Glad to say it did! Not only that, it goes into depth about the basics and key mechanics in different sections that you can go back and reference. It does take some time and concentration to even begin to understand, but it’s still fun even if you don’t understand every intricacy (like myself). Long story short, if you wanna learn Mahjong this is an excellent place to start! In addition, the characters are charming and add a nice touch to the game.

Most Japanese mahjong games are a mixed bag, often they presume you are already proficient, or they are in the Japanese panguage. This game is fun, easy to enjoy, has a tutorial, and is just made with a pride you can tell went into its creation. The author of this game has put tremendous effort over the years making Mahjong accessible to beginners as well as experienced players. If you have wanted to get into Japanese style, Riichi mahjong, buy this game. Its good, you will learn, and it will help you build your skill and open your eyes to a terrific game.

We’re not well-versed in mahjong, but this is a fun way to learn and play! It doesn’t hurt that your opponents are Disney-level cute, either.
