Kingdom Builder Reviews

Its May 2021, we’ve been playing on this app on and off since it came out. Its nice to see they finally did some significant updates a recently. However, its 2 steps forward 3 steps back. We used to be able to listen to podcasts while playing on our iPhone by turning the game sound off in the game settings. Now, the game sound only stays off for one turn, then comes on and then the podcast shuts off. Rechecking settings, the game sound is still set to off. So no listening while playing anymore. Developers please correct this. Also, players have been asking for a undo move button for a long time. Sometimes you tap the board in the wrong place accidentally (especially playing on a phone) and the piece gets played where it shouldnt. There is still no remedy. Hoping they return the ability to listen snd play soon and finally make an undo option.

We echo the reviews of others. There really needs to be an undo button. Its way too easy to select the wrong hex. That alone could move our 2 stars to 4 stars. Our only other gripe is that it isnt very polished for an app by one of our favorite board game publishers. One simple thing (but maybe not an easy coding fix?), why are some items (like the board) super crisp, but other things (like the playing card icons, but those arent the only ones) are fuzzy and the resolution is different. It doesnt look as good as it could and the flow of play for the user feels clunky. The zoom function isnt as intuitive as it could be. Most of all though, add an undo button!

Very frustrating on iPhone- GUI items disappear and never come back if another app opens over the playing field (like a text announcement), sometimes a piece cant be placed as if the touch isn’t being recognized, sometimes the piece is placed in the space adjacent to the touched one even when fully zoomed, etc. Most of those things will ruin your game.

Feels like a 20-year-old high school project.

Took over hour to register 3 of us, then finally played game only to finally finish an hour later for to game to begin to tally up who won, and 4th player jumps in and restarts whole new game without letting us know who won first game. DISASTER!

The latest version is very glitchy, almost impossible to play others. Continuously having wrong password/block screen when it has the correct password.. One minute it works and next minute it doesnt. Please continue to improve. Such a great game!

Game concept/ai opponents are good, but the UI is terrible. Menu navigation, rotation support, and the like are bad enough that it deters us from playing the game.

We really enjoy this board game, but the app version leaves much to be desired. The app was a bit glitchy to begin and in desperate need of an undo option, but the most recent update has made it almost unplayable. The orientation is awkward (the board is horizontal but the players are vertical?), the sound made when using a special tile ability cant be turned off, and we have to tap things several times before it registers. That this update was deemed suitable makes us have very little confidence in the team building it. You can only catch so many issues in a test environment, but its like they never even tried playing it.

What good is a game if they took the ability away for 2 players against 2 Als? We have played this game on one iPad for years and now we have to use 2 iPads and play against each other online?

  • The new orientation seems like it doesnt give as much screen space for the board itself. – The new layout splits the player icons up to either side. Its hard to keep track of player status. It was so much better when the players were all listed at the bottom of the screen. – The zoom functionality is buggy now – Something changed with the audio now so we cant listen to audiobooks or podcasts while we play, even when we turn the sound settings off. This is one of our favorite games to pass the time on our phone – we wish we could get the old version back!

When a game starts and pieces start to be played every thing starts to disappear. One had one game complete. Sad we cannot be another color besides blue.

We just updated and for the life of us we cant find the pass & play option. Did you seriously remove a function of the game without warning?

This is an awesome game with great easy to understand mechanics; however, it is way to easy to accidentally add a piece to the board where you would not want to. Not only does this sometimes just waste the move, it makes you feel like you need to restart the whole game as you cant undo your accident. With the simple addition of an undo button this would become a 5-star game. Please fix this.

Awful multiplayer interface. Nearly impossible to start a game with friends. Very frustrating and not worth the money. Fix this!

App is buggy, completely unpolished, and even feels unfinished. User experience is terrible. Good board game though.

Nice implementation, but feels outdated. Needs an UNDO button. Expansions would be welcomed too.

This is such a great board game, with great mechanics. The app version is not quite as good… The interface is lacking some fine polishing and there really is no online play. We wish they would add the expansion packs, as well. That being said, this is one of our favorite games to play. So fast and easy with no setup time!

Nice game, requires serious strategy and planning. Would be great to add some or any of the expansions that are available for the board game. Having more than 8 builder cards (in combinations of 3) would add greatly to the playability, as would more locations – and you already have them designed! Do it and Ill pay for the expansion immediately!

We had to go look up videos on how to play the actual board game. After we did that the game was decent, but not great.

This is a surprisingly pleasurable game. You play and it’s just… Pleasureable. Which is surprising. The Lite version of the game only allows you 20 buildings, cutting the game short. And that version of the game is completely unfun and uninteresting. There is no time for you kingdom to develop. We played the lite version and completely wrote this off, until a .99 sale and some positive reviews convinced us to try it. Developers, why would you market your game so poorly? Also, tutorial only, no manual is a no no. No way to reference the rules, apart from clicking through the entire tutorial. ALSO, INCOMPLETE TUTORIAL THAT DOES NOT EXPLAIN ALL THE RULES. Also cheap graphics and slow/clunky game progress. Also no undo. Seriously, who is in charge of development? We enjoy the gameplay and will be keeping this around. We’re glad we own it. We’ve downloaded a PDF to read the rest of the rules that the game doesn’t teach you (e.g., did you know you can lose one of your bonus action tiles? We didn’t! Then it happened!). And all the while we’ll be left a little confused about why this app is the way it is.

Needs a rulebook, not just a tutorial, also needs the expansions and an undo button.

We have the board game and was really excited on this app. We love playing it, but lately, when playing, the space turns orange when trying to put down one of the three during your turn and freezes the whole game. There is no way to go back or redo without leaving the whole game and starting a new one. Not good! Fix this please.. Also where are the expansions? Review would be a five star except for the orange freeze space.

No undo option when you make a mistake. Forces you to use some special actions with no undo. Ends the game some time when we still have tiles to play, very frustrating. AI seems to always get the card they need. Good game though, could be great with these minor fixes. The score calculation isnt always correct, especially when it comes to Fishermen and Miners.

Hanging out with some family on the recent holiday, as the night lulled we found myself sitting next to someone and playing this with them. It was essentially a training game, being her first game and all, but it got her interested and Ill now be bringing our actual KingdomBuilder game set the next time we visit. As someone who owns all the expansions though we cant help wishing this app had the expansions as well. The app is great when we feel like playing the game and have no one to play against. Its a bit difficult to navigate at times though, especially trying to change difficulty or boards. And every time we try to play online it says we have to be registered but we cant figure out how.

We love the game, but where are the updates with any of the expansions? The game has been out forever and we are still only getting the base game. The last update was to update ads? Gee thanks… Why is there no Async play? Live play works sporadically at best because the game is tied to BSW.

The lack of a "back" or "undo" button is killer. We have fat fingers and sometimes we press the wrong tile…

Dropping to two stars because this game is buggy as hell! It acts like it has a virus most of the time and Queen has clearly given up support for updates/upgrades, which is sad because the RL game is great and has a bunch of expansions. Needs an undo button for mistakes, like in real life when you make a bad placement and catch yourself right away. Also, sometimes when placing a settlements near a special ability hex, you dont get the ability, which suuuucks!

Kingdom Builder is a great game but this app does not do it justice. Initially the app works fine but after a number of games the app gets glitchy. Examples of glitches include no map appearing, freezes in middle of moves, moves not appearing on maps, etc. We have to delete the app and reinstall it. We had problems on our old iPad 1 and the problems persist on our new iPad Pro. You think over the years it would have been fixed.

We love the variable setup and quick game play. This lets you play a lot of games and each one feels different. The app works very well although it would be nice to see the text larger which is barely readable even on our iPad.

Rough without undo, given the complexity of trying to beat these strong AIs. Please consider adding an undo feature.

This is a great game! Please update and add expansions!

This is one of our favorite board games of all time! We own all three expansions and two of the mini expansions. We love how the game is fast, but still thoughtful. And the replay value is high because with so many board configurations and card combinations, it’s like a completely different game every time. That said, I’d love it if the app version had an undo button so those pesky accidental screen touches didn’t ruin the game. But we’ve gotten better at being very careful, so it doesn’t bother us much anymore. The main thing I’d love in the app are EXPANSIONS! PLEASE, we really want all the boards and cards!

The AI is well-implemented and provides a good challenge for a solo game or pass and play. While we haven’t tried playing online yet, the complaints about BSW seem silly to us – plugging into the larger existing online player community seems like a much better idea than the closed ecosystem that Gamecenter offers. The developer has fixed the bugs that we’ve encountered since release. The scoring display after the game has been completed is the best of any any app we’ve seen – you can tap any point total from any category for any player to see how the point total was calculated on the game map – brilliant! Because of the variation in maps / actions / goals from one game to the next it offers a high replay value. Some complaints are valid – an Undo would be nice (use the Zoom if you have fat fingers people!) and the graphics could be sharper, but in general we think the reviews of this game have been overly harsh (so we bumped our 4-star rating to 5). We would love to see wider adoption as this game seems tailor-made for expansions!

A lot of the older reviews made complaints that seem to have been addressed by the zoom levels and orientation. While the textures could be sharper when zoomed, and the animations a bit flashier, and some music added, this does a good job of giving you the experience of playing the game. Probably won’t win over too many new fans with this presentation, though. Only complaint we have is once you select a tile to make a special action (I.e. Stables), you seem to be forced to use that tile you selected without any way to cancel and choose a different tile, which gets annoying.

This implementation is typical Queen: laggy and slightly buggy (I sometimes get an advanced indicator of where we can play during the AI player’s turn) and the UI decisions are sometimes questionable, but the AI opponents are super hard in this, making it a real challenge. Recommended especially if it’s on sale.

The one issue we have is that every now and again when you start a new game there is no map just a black box. The only way around it is to re-install the app which causes you to lose the stats otherwise everything else is fine and we love the game. We’re using the iPad Air with Version 7 software so we’re up to date.

The board game is great. But this version has no undo button. That’s just inexcusable. Dumb! Also, the tutorial stinks, although that at least isn’t the end of the world, you can go to boardgamegeek and watch a ton of instructional videos or look at a player aid, etc. Also, you can’t look at the rules during a game, or click on locations for descriptions. But again, there’s boardgamegeek. So really, the biggest gripe is the no undo. How does something like that get overlooked?

This is a solid implementation of a fun game. Really enjoyable and worth the money. We hope it works under ios8 so we can keep playing it. Additional features future updates should have: (1) the rules (the tutorial is insufficient, so the game is best learned elsewhere); (2) as others have mentioned, an undo button in case you tap the wrong spot; (3) expansions.

We love the board game and this app. It’s quick, and easy. Could it use a back button and better multiplayer? Sure, but those are not a deal breakers for us. Our one issue we’ve noticed on at least two games lately: Last turn in a three player AI match. We place our three settlements then we go to use one of several special tiles we have and the game does not let us use them. We can’t do anything except check the information bit about the tiles and the point card rules.

We have had fun with the app and played it several times daily. However it does bother us that last time this was updated was in 2013!? Also there needs to be an undo button, we have made few accidental building of settlements which we couldn’t undo. Furthermore there is one bug where we couldn’t make a legit move of building a settlement in a map corner and if we longtouch there we get an info window describing a special location such as a watchtower or a barn whereas there are none.

Overall this is a great app to develop strategies and practice versus the AI’s. It can also be used as a random board generator for the actual game. Negatives Sometimes it will freeze in the late game, changing orientation mid game will lock you out of your bonuses, no undo, and the biggest downfall for us is no asynchronous play. We mainly play this solo, and it is a very quick, challenging game.

Implementation is pretty good. AI is surprisingly strong. Not very polished overall, but it gets the job done. There’s no undo button though. Add that and this game would be perfect. As it stands, one misclick can mean the difference between winning and losing. Just make a button that resets the board to the state it was in at the start of our turn.

Cons: can’t listen to music while (2007 is calling and they want their app back). As many others have said no undo button Pros: Plays quick, ai is smart.

Fun game but the AI is prone to freezing very late in four player games and ruining the game. Would also love to see an Undo button for the last selection made.

Great game BUT… App interface is okay, but doesn’t always respond to first touch which can lead to misplacement of a cube-no undo makes this really annoying. Hogs battery life and freezes late in games. AI is solid. Some bugfixes and an undo would make this great. Mediocre effort as is.

For the love of god give us an undo button. Its completely unplayable without.

We love this game, but it freezes from time to time late in the game. We’ll change our review to 5 stars if the company would update it and fix the glitch. This past freeze we only had 9 tiles left. Super annoying…

This has the makings of a fun game. It seems to have a good amount of strategy, and we think we would like it, but we can’t play it. The app crashes very often. We have tried 5 times and have yet to be able to complete the tutorial to learn the game. There seems to be an issue causing the crashing if our phone changes orientation. Possibly, this could be fixed by locking the screen orientation. The zoom function does not work well, and an undo function is sorely missed, as many have already pointed out. This game needs serious updates and fixes and we cannot recommend downloading it until this is done.
