Magic: The Gathering Arena Review

Everyone wants commander, why do we even have to ask? In hopes of a future overhaul and maybe 4 player battles in giving this 5 stars (against our better judgement) Its pay to win but its fun when the games not repeatedly crashing.

Love the game, got lots of our friends to play it, but we want to play a big commander game with us all specifically and it pains us that we dont have it. Beyond that Im a deck builder for fun, and we want to test decks without having to have the cards so we know if Im getting what we really need. Just on a bot, mostly for draw purposes or to try combos. We also want a system that allows you to bookmark cards in fight to look up later.

If arena was a girl Id make it our wife!

This game is amazing and really fits the vibe and is very convenient for when your driving or don’t have your decks on you definitely reccomend.

There are a few unfair combos that players can preform that newer players cant counter, for example the ascended animist Nissa, her +1 ability is overpowered on all standards, if you want to win you have to kill her quickly, at the least we would like her cost increased by at least 3 mana.

The only thing we have to say is good game.

Super fun and addicting if you love magic the gathering!

Have played this for years. We played paper but we traveled a lot for work but this has been amazing cause now we can play online instead of waiting til we get home after a month long trip. Thank you for this!

This game is perfect for people with busy schedules who still love the game. Convenient to use on a tablet and they are keeping the game fresh with updates.

We love this game so much but it needs some quality of life changes. Replays showing what you and you opponent had in your hands would be so much fun to share with friends and even look over someones cards to improve your deck or maybe see what they could have done better! We also think that people who timer troll need a way to be punished. Maybe giving them less timers or putting them with other players who do the same thing? It no fun when we have to wait 30 seconds between each turn because someone is mad they lost their last match or dont like how we play so they choose to waste our time if we dont surrender..

The app version of arena runs smoother than on our windows laptop. We have had an issue where we have been stuck on a screen showing retrieving asset manifest when using the app on the wifi at our home. We hope this bug gets fixed soon!

We love the game and really enjoy playing it with our friends. The only thing that irks us about this app, is we feel that we have to update it form the App Store AND download data in the game around every other week. There are many gaming apps that have ways to update the app without needing to go through the whole process over and over. We understand an update and download every few months, but its really exhausting how often it is now. It also doesnt help that our internet is slow so it takes 5 times as long to update the app and Im not even able to download the in-game part until Im in public and able to use faster internet. We get that part is on us, but Id play much more often if we didnt need to wait around for hours to be able to play it. Could use more of the already produced cards in the game, like lighting grieves and such, but the game is still very fun. Would and do recommend, just has its bitterness that we feel we need to warn people about.

Its been fun. Our only feedback is explorer needs the card skullcrack to combat the lifelink power in the format.

We love this game as this was the only thing that kept us alive during our breakdowns by being bullied back in Tempe 90s, the game itself is already beyond our expectations and we think we wont be able to play as good as we do here on the physical form anymore. On the other hand, our complaint is that the shuffling of the deck is very bad, terrible, almost impossible to understand. We have made our math and for the past 87 games, 7 out of 10 losses is because of the terrible shuffling that leaves us always with no lands. This is on top of having a 60% deck with lands only and not even that helps compensating the results. The physical deck was supposed to have no more than 30% of lands and it worked perfectly. Theres something very off about the shuffling algorithm in any digital game, it will never be a natural outcome. We think thats the only thing that is imposible to digitally accomplish to mimic the real world and its very upsetting and frustrating. And last but not least, the toxic cards idea is the worst thing!, nothing like a good normal game length as toxic cuts the game in half by having 10 counters to lose the game, maybe cards that remove toxic counters like when you gain life too. We dont know but that was purely evil in a fast-food/fast-gaming way of thinking.

This game is great on PC but could use some work on mobile. For example, deck building is very tedious as the limited screen space requires you to scroll endlessly unless you use very specific search terms.

It is very grate and we love it because now on we now please magic.

Im very new to MTG and this app is a great place for people w no knowledge to start- its helping us learn what and when to tap cards. It also is helping us figure out what type of deck and play style we like most! We dont pay for anything and can get to Diamond with our deck- no need to pay real money unless you want to join in on some of the bigger events but Im happy with just ranked and normal standard matches :)

Its really good, but the shuffler gives us the same cards EVERY SINGLE TIME.

We absolutely love the app. The game play is great. Only issue is it is overpriced. You cant trade cards for gems or anything like that so the price shouldnt be so close to paper cards which retain value.

Havent played MTG in years but enjoyed playing it. Since aside from in person card matches you cant use trading like the PC version. So it would be great if they would add that in a future update.

Thanks for fixing the crashing issues! The game is fun! But theres still the occasional frozen match and circumstances where wins arent properly credited.

Unbalanced as any mobile game can be online.

Lots of connectivity problems and every other player you face just sits and wastes your time. Otherwise pretty fun.

Arena is fun and it works, but we really wish commander was in it. Isnt it an official mode already? They have no excuse not to add it.

Magic itself is a fun card game dont get us wrong, but with how unintuitive the actual software and the boardstate being hard to manage if you have a lot of things on the board puts us off the game. Its a good budget way to play the game but WOTC really needs to step up with the UI and UX.

Used to have awesome animations for mythic creatures/cards now they dont and yet somehow from the time we downloaded it initially 3 years ago way bigger in file size. Add to that the lackluster experience of playing because of bannings and way to strong cards and a very greedy economy IDK Im just kinda out on Arena.

Absolutely trash for pvp no fun at lol call us a baby idc we play for entertainment purposes not to watch someone cycle the same move over and over in the same turn until they can pay 50 to take 50 life points or whatever its called from nahhhh Im good no thanks lol if someone did this type of stuff in a real life game we would literally laugh and concede the game but trust us our laugh alone would make the other player mad bet we guarantee it.

The game itself is beautiful and well crafted, but its deck randomizer is hot garbage. For casual play, this is annoying, but tolerable. Eventually, you may end up with most of the cards you need for a decent deck, and putting in more time will net you basically anything you want, for free. Just quit the games where Arena screws you over and you may have fun. However, to get the best stuff, you need to do drafts which costs 10k gold or 1500 gems, the in-game currency which comes out to around 10 dollars. Problem is, no matter how good your draft is, you are likely to get mana flooded far more often than you dont. Spending 10 dollars to watch your opponents steamroll while drawing your 13th land of 17 is unacceptable. Takes around 10 days to build the gold outside of special gimmes, so perhaps take a shot if you dont fear getting swept by sheer luck. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

The game is still not random and fair. They will pair you against opponents according to what type of deck you are using. Is this not true magic, its garbage. Second part. Had to come back experiencing the same exact thing again and this time wow you guys asked us if we enjoyed the match? Hilarious!! Utter garbage!!

Waiting for the Server tap Waiting for the Server tap Waiting for the Server Waiting for the Server Waiting for the Server Waiting for the Server.

This game crashes constantly and causes you to lose matches because of it.

Soooo many banned cards in formats where they are just way too overpowered. Casual play is practically nonexistent and you are no longer able to play brawl with friends. Really a huge turn off due to losing the 1 v 1 commander against friends.

If you miss tabletop Magic, this might seem like a fix. Trust us its not. The game is for sure ridge pay to play. Players that spend more on the extra crap that isnt card alway seem to pull the prefect amount so mana or the miraculous card they need right at the perfect time. We played the same deck in area and the tabletop in the same standard format. We’ve seen the decks that are performing well in the game. The outcomes with our deck in area compared to tabletop are stupid. Like 60% win on tabletop vs 33.33% on sham of app. Avoid this crap if you actually enjoy playing Magic.

No respect for the source material and of LORD OF THE RINGS, no thanks uninstalling.

We cant really put our finger on how bad the standard meta is right now. The base game for playing mtg and you have turned it into a mess all over again- mono blue mono red and white green one one countersjust like what a year ago? How is it that the standard meta keeps turning into this bland smooth brained reprinted dumpster – notice the lack of fire? Theres no flare left in mtg – you killed it almost two years ago and have been selling out since- we hope someone fires whoever in charge Bc this game is hopeless now and looks like its going to stay here for another year- see you at next investor call.

The game was fun when using starter decks paired against other players with starter decks. Then out of nowhere, you get thrown into 5+ games in a row against players with fleshed out decks and tons of rares against your pile of 10 packs and starter decks. Im glad those 5 players had a good time beating up starter decks, because we sure did not and we dont want to play anymore. Its a pity that a large game company like Magic can do the research to produce player archetypes, but cant have the foresight to tweak the matchmake system to pair players with similar card pools or win/loss streaks.

Hello, again just here to say that if you have any love for this game at all reject this app. Its garbage, inside and out. Players are bots. They cheat. Every time. No matter what deck you build, choose, make up yourself the computer will put you and your deck against the same thing but better thanks to an Algorithm. This game is garbage.

Turn 2 wins in golgari. Alchemy is super bugged. They create cards then ban them a few months later as if to say were not intelligent enough to create new content so its now banned. Additionally, It will rob you of your turn on iOS, they devs dont have the fortitude to fix basic game bugs, it will make you and your opponent rope into a draw for no reason. Dont waste your time. Definitely dont waste money on it in any case.

The app is saying that we need space when we have more the enough space.

But arena has the worst matchmaking of any game ever created.

So this is funny because our original review isnt on here. So, please stop making these decks for dummies because no ones being creative and its boring seeing playing against the SAME deck 5 times in a row!

This game is trash. The mechanics of actual magic are good but the matchups, random shuffling and draws, and drafts are just garbage.

This client recently started crashing a lot in the middle of the game. The screen gets frozen up and we can interact with some elements but we cant progress the turn. We have to close the client and reopen it. By the time its all set up we may have missed the turn timer. Makes for a really bad playing experience.

We love the game play and the look of the field. Everything is smooth and crisp even when playing with your favorite deck. It can be a little difficult at times with the hand draws in some games but that how it is at times. Simply amazing game.

Way Cheaper than buying Actual Trading Cards !

This is one of our favorite games except it very very frequently seems to match you against a certain kind of opponent if you pick a certain kind of deck with some RNG applied should be pure random with no ai in the matching, Im a good player with a good deck and we keep getting paired against a slightly better version of it. Im saving up cards to improve our deck, but why face us off against the same deck Im playing zoo many times it doesnt happen like that when we chose other decks , like when we play our green white deck it seems the only opponent we can get is ninja or angel.
