Mahjong 4 Friends allows you to play mahjong with your friends and/or bots! American, Chinese, Hong Kong, and British Mahjong are supported. Can’t play your way? Send us an email!
If you can’t install Mahjong 4 Friends app, you can also play at https://mahjong4friends.com. The iOS app brings increased performance and additional features, so using it is recommended.
Mahjong 4 Friends provides instructions in little yellow bubbles while in the game. If you want to learn more about rules and strategies, a comprehensive tutorial is linked to from the app. Summaries of rules are provided below:
American Mahjong Rules (from NMJL card):
- One right, across, left charleston round (0-3 tiles left)
- If all 4 players agree, One left, across, right charleston round (0-3 tiles right)
- One charleston pass across (0-3 tiles)
- Mahjong when matching a combination on the card.
- Jokers can only be used in matches of 3 or more tiles.
- Any player can swap a matching tile for exposed jokers
Chinese/British/Hong Kong Rules:
- 4 pongs/kongs and a pair are mahjong
- Sequences can be used to replace a pong/kong
- An optional charleston is provided
- Mahjong and sequence limitations can be overridden (to help you play by your rules!)
You can play with your friends on any American Mahjong card by selecting "Other Card" – scoring is supported on the 2022, 2021, and 2020 National Mahjongg League cards, as well as the 2023, 2022, and 2021 Marvelous Mah Jongg cards.

Playing a Game:

We adore playing mahjong, and we rarely have friends around who are willing to play with us. This app totally fits the bill. We love that we can switch it up to reflect the style of play we prefer (yay Chinese mahjong!) and that we can customize the tile tops. Im also using it to learn how the scoring works, which was something completely nebulous to us before we started using the app. Mad props to the developer, who was very responsive when we had a question. Definitely worth picking up and paying to remove the ads.
This app is so much fun! Im gaining familiarity with the hands – finally. The game has a feature which shows you suggested hands with your tiles. Its helping us see the possibilities.
We have played Mah Jongg on many apps and Mahjong4Friends is simply the best. The app offers lots of guidance, which makes it perfect for beginners but that guidance does not get in the way for experienced players. The Suggested Hands feature is great we are looking forward to using Mahjong4Friends when the new card is issued in April. Great app!
Im just now learning to play Mahjong and this has been absolutely fantastic!!! Great practice and teaching tool. We have learned so much by using the app. We have recommended it to our teacher to share with her students. We are now playing as often as we can play.

The Scrabble Addict wrote a review on March 12 and we agree with it completely. We are new to Mah Jongg and was interested in playing after watching 3 out of 4 one hour classes online offered by AARP. We then attended 2 or 3 classes at a local center, but was constantly helping us choose which category and hand to pick. We then read a book from the library on how to play which recommended this app. We started playing on the app daily. This really helped us become more familiar with the card and the various hands. We love the offering of different choices when trying to decide which hand to play. The ladies at the Activity Center couldnt believe how fast we learned how to play and bumped us up from the beginners class to the intermediate group after only 3 days! We highly recommend this app to anyone who wants to learn the game.
Though we are sure there is a lot we havent figured out about app, after playing over 1000 hands we can play in person much better now without looking at card as much!
Not only fun to play against bots, but increases skills for playing in person. Love it.
We have enjoyed this game. However there is now no way to silence the voice calling out the discarded tiles. That is very annoying to us. We were wrong. You can silence the game. We are now playing with our fiance. We play when apart and when together.
A friend introduced us to playing MahJongg but it was so complex that we had a hard time learning all the hands and rules. This app is such a great way to learn, become acquainted with the 2023 card, and get familiar with the rules by playing with bots. So far the ads have been unobtrusive. We highly recommend!

We really loved this app, which was incredibly good and fun. But the latest update appears to have broken most of the image links. Now you get a bunch of question marks instead of tile images, which makes the game unplayable.

We are a begnner Mah Jongg player. We have the national Mah Jongg League card for 2023 and this app supports that for free! It shows you sample hands for the tiles you have plus you are playing against 3 bots so you get to learn to watch what others arenlaying down too. Hughly recommend this app.
This has been a total black hole for us in a good way. Easy to play, easy to pick up where you left off, easy when no friends are available to play. Also not a buncha adsnot yet anyway.

Im an average player. We find myself playing this game a lot to get us in shape for in person games. Very helpful to get up and running with a new year card. We do miss very much the suggested hands button. It doesnt work . It did work for the 2022 American Mahjoung card. Why have it showing if it doesnt work?
Playing the 2023 card for American mahjong. When we meld a pong, etc., for a suggested hand, it eliminates that hand and suggests others.

We were looking for an app to help us learn how to play. This is the 3rd one we tried. It is our favorite. We deleted the others.
Easy to use. While learning new cards, it is really an advantage to become familiar with the suggested options. Gave us an advantage while playing live.
We like playing because it gives us practice and you get use to the hand we cant figure out how to play with real people.
We love that it looks like a real game table and naming each tile as they are played is a great help.
We like playing the free versionads are not very intrusive. We play on our iPad. It is easy to pull up discards. We like that the Bos call out the tiles they are discarding.
We really enjoy the practice but wish we could play it live. We do not know the game well enough to help create this though we were asked. It is the only Filipino mahjong we have been able to find.
New player and it is helping us to learn the game. There are some glitches. I.e. We cant get the volume back correct. The settings no longer adjust the voice prompts and the card clocking noise.?
We like the app but we have trouble with the Charleston part for some reason. Get all confused.
Love the game. Great practice. Our only complaint is that we wish the newly picked up tile wasnt thrown into the middle of the pattern we are trying to form. It feels like we are constantly moving the new tile out of our pattern. Just have new one go to one side.

We like the options to play different styles of games. There is an ability to force a winning hand if the game doesnt recognize a certain winning combination.
This is a nice game. The voices dont have much improvement Changing the dragons was a step backwards. Stop making changes before the game is ruined.
Just learned how to play mahjong in October and our friends cant believe how good we are already. This game helps pick up your speed and the history option is fabulous! We’ve been replaying games with different strategies. Great learning tool! When we started learning to play, it was strongly recommended that we practice online AND learn the card. We did both and we learned how to play pretty well and we play quickly. We still have trouble figuring out how to play defensively, however but that will come with time. Best thing of all, its free!
This is almost as good as playing live with our friends. We love this game. We have only been playing it for 3 days, but it has been hours long each day. Love, love, love this game.

Finally the real American Mahjongg game, instead of the match games saturating the App Store with the same name! We’ve played with four of our friends at their houses or ours for years. Now as we get older and some of us are experiencing mobility and health issues its great to be playing the game even if we cant meet in person. And we can also practice individually w/ the computer on the days we dont meet. Thank you so much!
We dont know what our life would be like if we did not have this game to play. We are 86 years old and cannot get around very much so we absolutely appreciate it whoever put this game together. We were really enjoying playing this app, but recently, the game keeps saying we dont have a winning hand, even when (with our 2022 card), we definitely do. Im not sure why, but Ill click the Mahjong button, itll say our hand doesnt qualify, then we click again, and the game says 0 points and -75 points for the table. Most recently, our hand was EEEE WWWW 1 22 333 (with a few jokers but not for the solitary 1). Perhaps there was an update that is having issues? Or perhaps there are some rules with this particular app that Im no familiar with? Something for the app developers to look into.
