===== to.be.a.vidmaster ====
What does it mean to be a Vidmaster?

It is being balanced in the calm center of a whirling and untouchable tornado of destruction, while showers of grenades patter harmlessly around you and bullets crawl toward you in slow-mo.

It is when your brain develops a new bundle of nerves whose only function is to re-route impulses directly from your eyes to your finger muscles, so that you can twist and snap off a rocket long before you’re conscious of the yellow blip in your motion detector.

It is when the difference between a roomful of alien warriors and a carpet of them is a matter of seconds.

The word "vid" entered the Marathon lexicon during development of the first game, to distinguish the excellent players (particularly in net games) from the fodder. The Oath of the Vidmaster was inscribed into the skip-levels dialog (Command-Option-Begin New Game), to remind players of the highest level of excellence they could aspire to:

"I pledge to punch all switches, to never shoot where I could use grenades, to admit the existence of no level except Total Carnage, to never use Caps Lock as my 'run' key, and to never, ever, leave a single Bob alive."

To do these things is to invite maximum peril, and requires one to play the game as hard and unrelentingly as possible, at the highest level of skill; to play as a Vidmaster.

These three games, the Marathon® saga, are the best training and testing ground for Vidmasters. You can play against aliens alone or in a networked group through more than 80 levels. But the true challenge is surviving in one of the 50 included netgame arenas against other people. It is in such trials by fire that mighty Vidmasters are forged.

Rage hard..

Community Insight:

We love this gun so much! It is actually a good game! But shame, Bungie made it into extract game.

If you read this, we…want to make what after the Marathon Trilogy. What after 92 or maybe 93 years when Marathon is gone and our beloved main-character is "dead" or trapped in timeline. We cannot make a game of this Aleph One engine, of course. Nor you guys can see our talks. But this time, let's revive it, with the story we are going to make: Classic Marathon: Interloper. Sounds cool, same as old as times. No longer the same officer but his destiny is always same.

Glad to see this game brought back to life. We really enjoyed the Marathon series but had to say goodbye over the years as this Mac Classic was lost to two major CPU shifts by Apple. The HDR graphics upgrade makes this game look even better than it ever did before. And now the Spatial Audio and background music from fans takes it to a new level. Thanks for bringing this 1996 game to new life.

Keyboard support is here, would be nice if the mouse locked into the game (like how Minecraft does it).

Only the games stock map can be played. No community maps can be selected or hosted. Insane.

We were so amazed when we found out our favorite childhood game got a mobile port, with full controller support and updated graphics nonetheless.

It would be awesome to have this game bootable from the Backbone app. Marathon 1 and 2 can already do this. Otherwise, game is great.

Needs controller support Edit: needs Backbone controller support.

Glad to see this game brought back to life. We really enjoyed the Marathon series but had to say goodbye over the years as this Mac Classic was lost to two major CPU shifts by Apple. The HD upgrades make this game look even better than it ever did when we first played it back in the 90's on our Mac Performa 630. The music in this game still is the most eery soundtrack we have ever heard in a game.

Coming back to this game just now, it has been an amazing experience replaying this game. Multiplayer and Campaign are both good. We just wish map building can be remade.

Dont know why sources say it doesnt support controller when Im able to play it with our backbone controller, great combo if we ask us , legendary franchise as well.

We know this game isnt really updated much anymore but would kill for controller support.

We understand that Marathon Infinity has different story lines based on how one performs throughout. But Im now playing the Rage chapter for the 4th time (starting with ACME station, ending with Where are Monsters in Dreams). We thought it was a punishment for not killing all aliens in the chapter, but it now looks more like a glitch. Any help is welcome.

We want to use the Classic weapon textures but we also want to use the HD renderer for the levels is there a way for us To use both the HD graphics renderer and the classic weapons textures.

Eager to play these again with a controller, but our brain only works with inverted aim would also be nice to be able to disablr the texture filtering on both walls and enemies to get a look closer to the originals.

We cant thank you guys enough for updating the series. We have been waiting a long time and cannot believe its finally here in all its glory! You guys have done a stellar job with all 3 updates and hope that you are able to continue. We tried to donate but apparently the donate button is not working properly? Anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Ive been waiting for this to be updated for the new iOS. Really fun port.

It's fun. Not as hard with the Master Chief Mode.

Pretty much, you solve maps and others but overall, dam fun and lots of shooting. Can't wait for their new Destiny game for the Xbox 720.

Awesome game but its hard and im stuck on the first part.

Nice and hard, unlike a lot of modern games.

Waiting for this a long time ago… Thanks very much!!! Btw what about the multiplayer version.

Somewhere in the heavens…rubicon is waiting.

This is the 3rd of 3. Play them in order. We used to feel that N64 goldeneye and N64 perfect dark were the 2 most important fps games shaping the genre, but after playing this Marathon definitely deserves a spot in fps history.

Its the finishing piece to the collection.

We loved playing the series on back on the computer and XBLA but we had a blast on ios. In fact our decision to get an ipad was based on the release of these games. Overall we can tell that Blezek and his team slaved to port this masterpiece only to release for free, and for this they hold our respect. Now that the original trilogy has been fully released on ios… …how about RubiconX? <: ).

This is AWSOME we love marathon but some levels crash so PLZ fix but everything else we love.

We love this game and we think the controls are pretty easy it doesnt crash on us at all its AWESOME! Its also kinda creepy all by your self but the only thing is that we cant beat the first part we keep walking around in circles it also needs more monsters in the first level in other words this is the best game ever.

Now if only they would do a myth app.

Thanks for the great port. This plays smoothly on the ipad, much better than the old ppc days. Would pay $$$$ for multiplayer support. Keep up the great work.

So far the game has been great. We have played all three games on our pc, Mac and ipad. On the iPad it has been a great experience. There are some glitches but we guess you guys will work them out.

You won't find a game for iOS better then this. A must play.

Why do so few people know about this.

The trilogy is complete, thanks.

Use to play in high school! Made maps with our friends!!!! Omg.

We can't even believe this. We can finally play Marathon.

Would love multiuser and a way to load our old maps.

Awesome job! The Marathon Trilogy is ported and they work great. We love being able to play they on our pad anywhere we go. Gives us a sense of nostalgia. It's one of our all time favorite games and it looks great and runs perfectly! Thank you for the best classic Mac games! Maybe one day we'll see a port of Marathon Evil? Anyways, keep up the great work.

This game is so much fun thank you for making it free such a classic.

Please add multiplayer to the marathon series and please touch up the controls. Please release Pathways into Darkness.

Of course, we are biased because we love the Marathon trilogy. But it is a very well done port, and did well with a limited iPhone interface. Some texture glitches detract from the experience but overall very well done port.

We've been a Marathon fan since the 90s, so getting this very faithful iOS port is quite exciting. We will say we're surprised there is no wifi multiplayer… Should be easy with Aleph One source. Controls are a bit difficult which is what keeps it from getting a fifth star. But, yeah…. Loving this. :).

The game itself is awesome and kudos to whoever ported it to iOS. The controls are a bit cumbersome because the iPhone 4S screen is too small, but we bet it's better on iPad. Putting the shooting triggers on the volume buttons would be nice, but we don't know if apple allows 3rd party apps to access those controls.

Maybe if we had multiplayer, id give 5 stars.

We think this game is terrific and the port of it to iOS is lovely. However, the control scheme for iPhone leaves something to be desired. Dual wielding requires both thumbs on the two triggers – therefore no strafing. Virtual joystick movement on the screen is jumpy and unpredictable. We're playing this game on easy and we're getting killed mainly from the fact that we can't control our movements with any subtlety. It's so cool to have this game on our phone. We just wish it played better.

This game is probably the best of the marathon trilogy, although, it has a few bugs. – on the third level the textures don't seem too be functioning properly. The vertical bars texture that is supposed to be transparent in places is instead bright blue in those places. If one was using the original graphics/physics editor for marathon (anvil) this would be caused by: a) not marking the texture as "transparent" or b) using the wrong shade of blue. Also the "Low'onn daytime" sky texture has been rotated 90 degrees (look up during level 3 if you don't understand) Fortunately those minor issues don't affect gameplay to any serious degree. So aside from that, it is an excellent game.

Great, But app quits at random moments, like the first 2 minutes we begin playing.

For the iPod 2nd gen, it doesnt work, instead you get a black screen and the HUD is the only thing you see. PLEASE FIX because Marathon is our favourite game ever, of all time.

We love this series, but the game only works on our iPad 2, anytime we try it on our iPod Touch 4 it loads the Marathon Logo then crashes back to the home screen. This happens for ALL of the Marathon games. Please fix ASAP.
