Sharpen your chess skills!

Beginners and experienced players alike will enjoy solving the chess puzzles included in this app. All of the puzzles were hand picked and were either taken from actual games or are compositions inspired by actual games!

The app includes 500 interactive puzzles ranging from mate in 2 moves all the way to mate in 26 moves! The object is to finish each puzzle by forcing a checkmate in a given number of moves. These puzzles are fun to play and can be enjoyed at your leisure on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

All of the puzzles in this app were taken from the book ‘A History of Problems: Memphis Chess Club’ by Kenn E. Thompson and Dwight K. Weaver (2011).

Memphis Chess Club Reviews

Abrupt quits are frequent, and the solver cant produce hints or solutions for any of the mate-in-7 problems. So its good for all the problems up to mate in 6, which is good enough practice. Its entirely possible that more powerful iPhones will support this app completely, so if you have an 8 or higher give it a try!

These nice little challenges help us improve our game. A good mixture for us of easy and hard chess puzzles.

The amount of value in this app is quite high. We do like the verisimilitude of the positions.

It’s fun, it’s knowledge, it’s learning,

What makes this collection of chess puzzles stand apart from others is these appear to be taken from real positions in chess games. The player and opponent names are given along with their rating, if known, at the time. This makes the puzzles more realistic as opposed to the utter nonsense of those fabricated setups we’ve seen before, made up purely for the sake of a puzzle. Lastly, this collection is pretty large at 500 puzzles and they range from mate-in-one to mate-in-eighteen (I believe). Thankfully, the number of puzzles are plentiful for us mere mortals on the lower end of the calculation scale. We will add there is also a timer and a hint system. The board and pieces are somewhat customizable as well. Nice app. Fun and challenging.

We found all the problems entertaining. We found a number of alternate and quicker solutions to a few problems, but two of the problems had no solutions or were presented improperly (for instance black to play, instead of white to play)

We especially like the problems where you have to find the checkmate in three or four moves ahead. It gives us much needed practice in visualizing what the board will look like depending on which decision we make.

Great fun! The mate in 4+ really helped improve our game.

Interesting puzzles. Really improved our chess skills.

The limitations on moves will force you to see new possibilities on the board. It’s true that these mates can be solved with more moves, but learning to creatively work yourself out of dire situations is priceless.

It is quite a good little app for those of us who enjoy solving chess puzzles.

We’re a pretty good player but on a leisure level. We begin to find these challenging at mate in 4 and then of course progressively harder. We’re sure some are wrong Etc like pointed out by a seemingly very thorough reviewer but for us it all makes sense. The layout is the same as the "Champions" app also recommended. We also recommend Puzzle Hero. Have fun.

Unfortunately, the "solver" rarely works if at all. And these mates can easily be solved with an extra move so not much of a challenge.

Seems like this app hasnt really been updated since ipad 1. Same issues exist and same mistakes. The solver has not worked on many problems since Ipad 1, and now in the ipad air 2 era the same issue exist. You are given a puzzle, you cant find the answer so you decide to ask the solver for the solution, only to have the solver tell it cant be solved. So you waste time solving a puzzle with out a solution. Not just a few puzzles but many puzzles. Also many are wrong. Also many puzzles will say mate in something but if you enter it into a chess engine the mate is in a different number. They need to stop selling this app which has had the same problems since ipad 1 until its corrected and they should check their puzzles with a chess engine that is legit.

We have their other app ‘Champs’. Both are really great. You gain an appreciation for what checkmate really means–and the importance of forcing you opponent into vulnerable positions. We’re assuming this app is best for beginner/intermediate players, but masters may enjoy the fact that your speed is timed. Thanks for making this!

It’s a fun game to play and it massively improves your situational awareness and playing. When we started we could barely see the "2 moves ahead" mates and now we’re at 4.

Since we have been playing , we’ve noticed that our reaction and recognition skills have greatly increased. Highly recommend!

Fun & good visualization practice.

Playing this challenging app is like a brain tune-up :)

This seems to be helping our game a bit! Fun too.

This is the 2nd of these apps that we’ve bought and it’s fantastic! Great fun. Great training.

It’s a great source, would be nicer if next and previous puzzle button was more obvious. Thanks guys.

This is a pretty straight forward game using real matches as a baseline to ‘mate in 2,3,4, and 5 moves. Great to brush up on your skills and a few of them are pretty tricky.

A great fun app that will improve your way of analyzing the position and making the correct first move that leads to mate. Great way to sharpen your thinking.

We’re trying to get better at chess and these puzzles are great exercises. The options that are given in this app also helps tremendously. World champs is better though, it’s more challenging.

It certainly helps to do these practice sessions because we can look for these patterns in actual games.

Definitely exercises our brain! Goodness these players were amazing!

This chess puzzle app is fantastic! We would get this again and again and again.

Solid Chess puzzles app with an easy to use user interface. Worth the $0.99.

… Puzzle app hands down. The theme progression is nice. We’re really enjoying our 10 year old work through these as well. Well done!

Nice job at compiling all these puzzles. Worth the download.

Great app. Love the exercises. Keep up the good work guys. Money well spent.

We like these much better than ‘composed’ problems, as these are based on actual games. There are some, however, which, after we’ve given up, the iPhone is unable to solve and displays a message to that effect, and when we play through the text solution, the problem makes no sense – lots of unforced moves and plenty of ways to avoid mate within the given number of moves. Other than that, this, together with the other set of puzzles from MCC, is great. We’re up to about 60% success with mate in six, which seemed impossible when we started. Many hours of enjoyment, highly recommended!

Fun to have when you’re waiting for chess with friends opponents to move!

Thoughtful puzzles. Computer is non-deterministic so may not make same move twice. Would be nice to choose move for opponent to explore variations. Bug: #129 should be mate in 6.

We challenge myself to get it right on the first try – to think as if Im really playing.

We do a lot of tactics training on various websites and one specific app. These tactics are superior without question! The other tactics are usually computer generated. If you look at those other tactical puzzles you’ll realize that you are being trained on tactics that you will almost never use because the average player who needs a tactic trainer to move up the class D and C levels won’t be playing opponents who put themselves in such positions. Kudos to the Memphis CC for all the work it took to record, compile, and produce the material so this book and app could be created! :-) Keep ’em coming!!

This is an amazing look into crafty moves that made us think and scratch our head like no other book, app, or online lesson on the topic of chess. Thank you!

Great app. Highly recommended!!!!!!!

We thoroughly enjoy playing this. Great way to pass time.

Good interface, plenty of puzzles… Some options are vague though and some puzzles have been proven unsolvable with modern computers. Still, overall this is a good way to practice mating patterns on the go.
