User Reviews on MTG Scanner – Dragon Shield

Looking for more information? Read a comprehensive review of MTG Scanner – Dragon Shield below:

Exactly what we were looking for to catalog our collection. The app supplies card values from TCG player without having to search each card individually. It also make it easier to research cards for new deck builds and gives you rules information for the cards. This had to of been created by someone that actually cares about both collecting and playing the game.

The scanner works great but the premium is broken and the customer service doesnt care. When we contacted them about an error at first they said they were looking into it then after a couple months they just straight up ignored us. The premium version is a scam. Not worth the yearly sub.

The scan feature works really well but, despite the app description saying you can do it, we could not find any way to add a card from our inventory to a deck. It just wants us to scan cards directly to the deck, which isnt useful to us. We want to build a deck WITHIN the app, not manually. We dont need an app to build a deck manually. Likewise, we could find no way to search our collection, once cards are scanned in. Not even just by card name. Which seems like an insane oversight. Why else would you scan thousands of cards?! This app is like a powerful electric screwdriver that no bits fit. Great in theory, useless in practice.

Latest update made selecting card versions unavailable. The scroll wheel to cycle through is gone.

Recent update is not usable on iPhone 14 Pro Max. Recent update that adds friends and sharing inventory etc destroyed the app. Stay clear.

This is a very good tool to keep inventory of the thousands of cards that any CCG player would accumulate over the years of playing. We love that you can add decks to the catalog. We wish the pricing of the cards would translate over to the deck side so you know how much you have invested in the deck itself.

Only manages to scan half our cards the other half we have to hold in front of the camera for 5 minutes (I timed it), so we give up, would literally be faster for us to type into an excel sheet.

So first off this app has been amazing for a new returned MTG player like myself. We played back in middle and we have A LOT of cards from then that Im going through and scanning. The best way to get consistent scans is to sit down and put your phone on a stand. We see a lot of people complaining about it not getting the set right however when we put our phone on a stand, the accuracy is now at like 98%. So overall the app has been great. We also like the fact you can change the prices to be from different online retailers. A few things we would love to see added would be as follows QUICK CHANGES: First off when you scan a card and you got the wrong set but didnt realize it until after you added it to your inventory there is no way to quickly change the amount you just added or remove it completely. You have to back out of scanning and go search for it in your inventory. SET SEARCH: Also when you do happen to get the wrong set, when you go to change it you get a massive list sometimes. It would be nice if we could search that list for the 3 letters that represent the set or the numbers. Example: we added a land card just to see because it was a pretty cool one. We only have up because well land is in every set and holy cow is that list long. No way we were finding the right set for that. Just a simple search function would be nice for that. DECKS: Probably one last thing would be the ability to add cards from our inventory straight into our deck area without having to rescan them. Then it also kind of makes changing cards in and out a bit time consuming. EXPORT DATA: The absolute best thing we would love to see is the ability to export all our cards to our computer to like MTGGoldfish or something. We would 10000% pay for premium if we had that ability. We might be missing it but we have not found that feature so far. That would be the best thing they could do. Other than that the app has been super helpful and useful. So thank you for speeding up the process of logging all our cards!

This app is an absolute god-send for keeping track of our collection so we don’t have to thumb through our card boxes/binders to know what we have to build/trade with. That being said, we wish there was an option to filter cards based off of set/color etc. The grouping/sorting is good, but I’d love to see some filters.

Please expand the set selection wheel. Its kind of small and there is a lot of unused screen real estate that can be utilized.

Doesnt scan all cards. You can type them in but you cant find everything. Some cards have not been added to the inventory list. We can find some cards of the new LOTR crossover but for the most part nothing. Just the main legendary creatures like Frodo. Not worth the price either as scan doesnt work all the time regardless of lighting sometimes it just freezes and does nothing.

We recently started playing Magic again and got our daughter into it but we wanted some way of tracking all of the cards we started collecting. We were dreading using Excel but then we saw this app and it perfect. Scanning was fairly smooth. We had issues with some the black cards but may have just been our lighting. Categorizing and seeing values was awesome. Great job!

We cant believe the functions that are provided by this app.

Very convenient to keep track of cards and market value.

This app is great. We love being able to scane a card and have pop up with price and all that. However. The deck builder portion is a bit difficult to work with. Adding the cards is easy. Adding them to the inventory is not. 1. Can there be a checkbox or button that adds all cards in a created deck to your inventory? 2. Can there be a drop-down option to set what format a certain deck is? For example if a deck is EDH/Commander, then set the image to be the commander and have a specific category for the card itself. 3. Set codes along side the full name and symbol of the set? Ie, 2X2, ONE, IKO, DMU, etc. 4. Double counting of cards. If we have 100 cards in our deck and in our inventory, we shouldn’t see 200 total. We should only see 100 since they’re the same cards if the option to count the cards in inventory is checked or whatever. Or don’t count the deck cards as part of the inventory. All in all, a good app but could have a few updates.

Got this app recently and it works pretty well! You may have to double check that the app gets the correct set for each card though, which will slow you down a little. Overall very pleased with the scanner part of the app, though. Scanned 2,000+ cards this past weekend by myself! Just one thing we wish this app hadit would be so, so helpful if the deck building function gave you the ability to add cards straight from your inventory lists, rather than having to re-scan or search cards by name from the entire library. As far as we can tell, you cant even filter your search results to show only cards that you own in your inventory. Imho, this would be a HUGE help to users who are interested in building decks using cards that theyve already scanned into their inventory.

We like that they give us updates, we can make a wishlist, add deck lists etc. We wish we could our my deck out of our inventory and not have to input cards twice. It would also be great if there was a way to copy a deck so that its easy to make adjustments and save a similar deck. Like a standard version and a commander version. Also the scanner is just ok, if the card is foil or if the card has a sleeve its unreliable. We do not see a way to export a list if we want to sell cards.

We love this app but the only thing we dislike and would be better is being able to move scanned cards from inventory over to a deck folder.

We used to keep track of our collection via mtgprices website but after they changed their policies to a subscription service we ended up just being locked out of our data. We happened upon this app a while ago and while the UI is a bit touchy it fits with what we needed. Pros: Inventory tracking Price Tracking Card Scanner List Creations A variety of filtering/sorting options Deck creation A fair subscription price for ad-free management, price alerts, price charting, and updates Cons: Deck Creation is not adjustable for EDH/Commander format Scanner is very quick with the capture feature and sometimes (rarely) doesnt know what the card is Im still testing it out but over the last month of using it we decided to try out the subscription service. Ill may update later.

The interface could be more efficient, but it works just fine if you have some time to scan in your collection when you first get the app.

This app is okay at best at the moment. We scanned our Gandalf the Grey (Legendary Creature – Avatar Wizard, R0322) and it keeps pulling up land cards such as Savannah and Plains. They dont even have the same color scheme, number or anything. There is literally no similarities between the card Im scanning and the incorrect ones pulled up, outside of being a MTG card. We understand technical errors but if youre gonna have a Premium offer (which we take no part), you should most definitely have kinks like this worked out. Youre better than this Dragon Shield. MAKE YOUR APP AS FLAWLESS AS YOUR BEST SLEEVES!!

This app used to crush other scanning apps, especially the very picky and battery consuming TCGPlayer app. But since the acquisition by Dragon Shield, the app has become notably worse over time image scanning cards. Sure, WOTC has been absolutely dumping new cards and art onto the market at warp speed, but if youre going to acquire a startup app for its visual scanning capabilities, you might want to continue investing money in that technology, especially when it (used to) generally destroys TCGPlayers own app on accuracy and battery consumption? Dont even get us started on the unusable web app manager, thats so bad its not even a feature worth discussing. Get it together Dragon Shield, youre better than this.

Wen move from in inventory to deck?

It scans so fast its delightful, but when we scan a card, all cards scanned thereafter only show the first card scanned. For instance, we just scanned Dictate of Heliod; it showed the correct card and data, but then when we scanned Launch the Fleet it only brought up the information for Dictate of Heliod, and again for Deicide. We have to restart the app after every scan if we want to scan another card. Highly frustrating. The app would be able to scan faster than we could switch cards if it werent for this bug. Fix this one issue and definitely a 5/5 app. Great scanner in principle, but 2/5 for now.

The app is outstanding a majority of the time, but as soon as we try to utilize the app to scan something up close, we are unable to because the app isnt calling for the camera to switch to the macro camera. This results in everything looking blurry up close. Example, we can scan most MTG cards using the app, but some cards that have similar colors within the photo appear blurry and no longer scannable. We have to search and add by typing the name. This is not a phone issue, it is an app specific issue that should be resolved. Thinking about moving on from the app if not fixed. The iPhone 14 and 14 pro max have been out since September 2022 and 8 months later this is still not fixed. We assume it is a simple fix to the apps code, please fix sooner rather than later. Thanks!!

App keeps saying token id expired and there seems to be no fix to this.

Im getting an error whenever we try to log in saying, ID token expired and we cant get passed it to log in and use the full app. If there is a workaround ill gladly change our review. Tried to reinstall and it does the same thing.

We have downloaded the app and was working fine. Now; before we can scan cards we have to re-download the card database every time.

Tells you the active price and can pull cards pretty fast to very fast. Sometimes its a little hard to get it to scan but we would say the scanning is 90-95% accurate. Love it, will continue to use.

We are a huge MTG collector. We have over 20k cards. We have given up so many times on apps because of the time sink. DragonShield truly put effort into this scanner. It scans almost faster than we can put the card in front of it. The database is huge and we like that we can make adjustments to our scanned card on the fly. We are having fun again and the options for sorting made our day. Thank you for this app!

Love the app!! Great at almost everything, except we were we could move what we have in our inventory into our deck with a button. Other than that, its a phenomenal app, and would always recommend using.

Good app more people should have it. It helps organize and keeps track of prices very useful it has saved us such time.

The is an excellent application if you want to keep an inventory of what cards you own. Unless Im missing some features (I have the free version and am generally dumb) it could use a bit more functionality in the deck building department to make that process a little easier but that may just be that Im expecting a different workflow. Still a great to use and great to have app.

Its a great app but where did the Back button go in scan mode? Is it covered by the lightbulb? Once you are in scan mode, the only way to exit is to close the App? Something is not right.

We use this app to keep track of an 8,000+ card collection. The amount of relief this product has brought us is tremendous. Dragon Shield has set themselves apart from others in a number of ways with this scanner. The seamless accessibility and ease of navigation is definitely noteworthy. We are able to customize the way we store and organize our cards, keep track of the decks that we have our cards in, and monitor the ebbing and flowing values of our individual cards, as well as our collection as a whole. This app has everything we could possibly need, except ONE feature (which we hope to see added, eventually). The only thing this app is lacking is a way to add MTG products to your inventory, aside from individual cards, that would otherwise be for sale on sites such as TCG Player, Card Kingdom, etc. It would be helpful to keep track of our inventory and the value of items such as unopened precons or booster boxes. Im not sure how realistic or easy it would be to add such a feature, but we would love to see it! We’ve already recommended the app to our entire playgroup, and even offered to help them get their collections organized. Absolutely top product here.

Super fast scanning and unbelievably useful. Only things we ask for would be a deck builder with your scanned cards as the database and the ability to scan cards in bulk without set selection. Still amazing tho, cant believe how quickly it recognizes cards.

We’ve been getting back into Magic: The Gathering after an long time away, and its been great to get our collection into digital form. The scanner feature is really nice although at times when doing bulk scans it can have a hair trigger and scan a single card a bunch of times. Easy enough to correct the quantities so its a minor complaint. Overall its been helpful.

Useful tool, but the scanner doesnt seem to work on sagas. It identifies most of our other cards immediately with no issues, except sagas.

This is a great app for people that have large and actively updated collections. Data base is comprehensive and scanning is fast and accurate. The price tracking is also great, no complaints there. Our only issue with the app is that we find the deck building to be a bit lacking. Our biggest want is importing decks from other platforms but another feature that would be great is having decks show which cards we are lacking in our collection when we make a deck. We have a lot of cards but we still need to pick up the odd card now and again so it would be nice to know when we need something for a deck we are planning. One last minor thing, we also noticed the data base doesnt recognize the stranger things secret lair by the stranger things names (Mike, Will, etc.). While its easy enough to just search the magic equivalents, it would be nice to have the card name in the app match the words on the card.

Not worth it. We want to scan 1000 cards and this app cant tell even the difference between editions that have black or white borders.

Nothing more to say. Just a fantastic app that has consistently exceeded our expectations. Thank you!!

Theres too many updates for this app.

How can it not be compatible with any website collection manager. The whole point of it is to scan cards to build collection and to share with ppl. How do we share our scanned cards???

So it is useless to us who wants to scan decks.

This app has been really awesome for scanning in cards and being able to see the value of our decks. There is a big problem though in the way of, if you have your deck, in Decks it will not show up in your Inventory. If you want a deck to show in your inventory, you first have to create a folder and then manually add each card one by one.

The whole profit system is confusing. What if we dont remember how much we paid for cards? There is just way too many variables in the mix, why cant we just have an app where we add our cards and into the inventory and just use it as a database and market price catalog? Also, show the cards current value in the inventory lists page, why show what we paid for it? Most of our cards we do not know what we paid for them so showing us that info doesnt help us. Just a bunch of $0.00 values all the way down. Ex. If we group by none, and the sort by current value in our library, why does it show the price we added when we added the cards when scanning? Why cant it display the current value of the card in the market? We didnt add prices that we paid for these cards.

Very good app for scanning cards! Unfortunately, all of our black cards turned into Savanahs as soon as we started using the app.

Ours doesnt sort by anything other than the default alphabetical order so its very hard to find thr valuable cards in the collection. Also would be extremely useful to be able to set the default bought for amount vs going off of current market value. When we buy boosters we have to manually edit each purchased for price to $0.33 or whatever.

We downloaded the app as a card tracker. We’ve compared a lot of our cards to what the actual market values are on sites like TCG and eBay sales. Theres a very large gap between what they consider a low value and what a sale price is for a good condition card and not in a good way. We dont recommend this app for accurate price tracking.
