Its a really neat game that reflects natureonce you learn the first few basic cards, you get the concepts quickly for the deep cards that are all different and make things interesting. This online version makes it really easy to learn. We loved it so much we bought the board game. We hope this app continues to evolve with more online play and updates.
Games end too soon and without a continue playing option your creativity is limited drastically. Deep cards are infrequently useful unless rounds can be extended or changed at the beginning or end of a game. This feature would be great, as would adding additional players beyond 2.
The game is wonderful. We love the board game and was excited for the app. It is just as fun with decent AI options and the images and play are fun . The game crashes for us a lot though. We hate that we can not see the full card for those in y hand without playing it and there is not enough undo features. With how small and hard it is to read and see everything at once. Still fun and worth the money but could use a lot of minor things to make it great.
We love this game but the AI is bad and only kinda challenging on hard, we would love to see the game change for the better, we will update our review if the AI improves.
We tried to play Oceans on our flight, and was met with an infinite spinner. Presumably, the app is trying to phone home to North Star servers. 1 star because the app cannot be played in airplane mode (i.e., without internet connectivity).
We recently redownloaded it the free version as then bought the complete game for 7.99 or whatever price it was and now since the update we have the multiplayer pack but not all the cards from the new pack we purchased we hit restore purchase and literally nothing happens its getting kinda old we just want to play with what we purchased please help.
We would love to give this a 5 star review because the game is fun and its an excellent digital translation, but the game crashes pretty much constantly and isnt able to recover-once we crash we cant ever progress past that turn. So far its only happened with the Medium AI, which is one of the reasons we paid for the full version. Id stay away until they update.
Disappointed that you can only play 1v1 for multiplayer. The physical game and TTS on steam both ply up to 5 players.
Its a great game, but youll never finish a game of it, because it ALWAYS crashes when it gets to the second phase. Theyve known about the problem for more than a year (Ive reported it and so have others) and either cant fix it or cant be bothered to. So while we really like the game, theres no point in playing it.
Only downside right now is the pass and play only supports head to head and there is no online. Once there is more multiplayer functionality this will be 10 stars.
We love the board game version of oceans and the iOS version delivers on the fun.
A game with no end! Every new game feels different and unique which is true for this version and the physical board game! Hope to see sooner and faster updates to this version as that is our only complaint is slow updates.
We didnt really have that much expectation on this game let alone playing it on the app. However we have been playing it for some time and we are completely blown away by both. The presentation is pretty good and the play actions and animations are really smooth and everything is integrated really nice. To top it off the AI is really good and we have only been playing on medium. We are actually learning strategies from a medium AI. We can only imagine how much more of a challenge the hard AI will be. This app convinced us pick up the physical board game and play with other people. Good job guys hope you integrate the expansions when they come out.
We love this game and play irl often but sometimes we want to play the game during commute or slacking at work but the game is so boring for players vs. 1 AI. The game shines at 4 player count so please add 3 more AI players!!
We were gifted the physical board game and loved it but wanted to play more than the people around us. This has been a good outlet, and actually clarified some rules for us! Im hoping youll add an asynchronous multiplayer mode and the option to increase the number of AI opponents in single player.
The app does an excellent job simulating the card game. Visually pleasant, great learning tool for the card game. Lovely music and sound. Only complaint is no online multiplayer. Just pass and play.
We have the physical version and love it. Mobile is the same game, and it plays great. However, the UI could use some improvements. We hate that you have to press and hold on a card to zoom in on it. Trying to read around your finger on a phone screen can be frustrating. The load times are also absurd for what a light on graphics game it is. Other than that, we greatly enjoy and am glad they made this app so we can enjoy oceans on the toilet.

Im giving this app 1-star until they fix the issues Im facing. We bought the expansion and was really enjoying the game. We needed to study and uninstalled it. When reinstalling we attempted to restore our purchases. The app hangs in an infinite loop never downloading the expansions. This is after leaving the phone alone for 4+ hours. We like the game overall and would enjoy it if we could access the expansions we purchased. Currently, Im playing free version on easy AI and with limited deep cards. It gets boring quick. The developer should fix the issue and Id gladly update the review.
Freezes on loading every time. Unfortunate as it’s a nice ten minute timewaster, but if it won’t load it doesn’t matter.
The game is unplayable. We’ve deleted and redownloaded multiple times and the game will still not load. We don’tmhave this issue with any other game we’ve downloaded.
After we created an account and logged in, our purchased content disappeared. There is no way to log out, so we reinstalled. The purchased content was still unavailable. When we hit the restore purchase button it crashes the app. Great game, absurdly bad app.
We paid for the full expansion pack but it wont work. Every time we try to restore purchase the game freezes.
We wish there was a report bug option so we didnt have to do this in a review. Playing the medium AI, some cards like Fast Metabolism crash/freeze the game. Also sometimes have an issue where the app skips straight to discard without letting you choose a deep card. The deep card option is then provided after, but you cant choose one and only selecting No Deep allows you to continue the game. We have no doubt these bugs will be fixed soon. Super awesome game; love it more than Evolution!
We played the board game with some friends and we had to get the mobile version. Runs perfectly and is beautiful and tons of fun to play. Well done devs!
We’ve played this game in person, and have always felt that it plays fast and ends abruptly. This online version plays pretty well, theres definitely some missing features though. Not sure why gameplay is set up only for two players at a time. You can play either against the AI or another person in the pass and play mode.
Tried going through the tutorial. Sorry, but trying to remember all the rules is too overwhelming. Deleted.
First of all, despite claiming to be the free, full board game, you still have to pay to play not only with family and friends, but any of the AI that are actually challenging. Secondly, The game is basically an exact copy of the other North Star game, Evolution, just with an aquatic twist. Overall, its probably not worth the money if you already bought the other game, and a borderline scam for claiming to be the free full game.
We love how educational the game is without realizing it u guys should do more like this one maybe an outer space version?
We didnt even purchase the full game yet and each time we get near the end of a session, the app crashes, resulting in the entire game rebooting to the main menu. It doesnt make for satisfying play if you cant even finish the game!
This is a very fun game but could you make it so that you can play against more than 1 AI because that would be wonderful :) Could you also add more deep cards?
As a huge fan of Evolution, Climate and Flight, we had to check out Oceans. We own the print copy but enjoy the digital as well. The Pass and Play feature is a favorite.

We cant get the game to progress beyond the initial loading screen. Would be more than happy to change our review if this gets fixed. We are a huge fan of Northstar Games and would love to see up and running. 1st Edit: we have been able to get the game to load, unless we get the Moray Eel or Jellyfish load screens. On these screens we tap the continue button and nothing happens. The other load screens are slow, but eventually let us progress to the actual game. 2nd Edit: Im playing on an iPad Air 2nd gen. We have gotten a few games to load, but we always reach a point where the game seems to get stuck and then crashes. It seems to happen when the Deep cards come into play. This is a real bummer, because we really enjoy this game. 3rd Edit: Got a new iPad. Problem solved! Game is fantastic! 5*s all the way. BTW, the sound track is really beautiful on the new speakers.
Crashes tend to happen later in your games.
Oceans shot right up to one of our favorite board games immediately upon release. We had backed the game on Kickstarter, and had been looking forward to the video game that was advertised in the box. Took longer than was advertised, so long we forgot to keep checking and missed it for a while, but thats to be expected with small studios and was not that big a deal. As an adaptation it recreates the gameplay of the table very swimmingly, not a complete Deep deck, again not too big an issue with how long it takes to program a hundred unique cards into a game, but what knocks a star off is that the game is limited to two of players. When you have four it really feels like you have an actual ecosystem to compete in, with lots of species to interact with. One on one is still absolutely worth playing and a blast, but without at least the option for four players this just feels like its not the full Evolution series experience. If the Devs ever add 3+player options (I have the bonus options for our tabletop that allows up to six players! Thats a little past what Im asking but would be so cool) we would immediately bump this up to a five star rating. Still going to enjoy it till then.
We used to play this board game a lot, so we love this app. But there are way too many crushing issues. Sometimes its random, sometimes the app just cant handle a specific situation, like whenever the AI is trying to play the kraken card, app will crash. Please fix these problems, theyre annoying! Great adaptation but it a a lite version missing fuller features. Really helped learn the rules for playing the physical game.
We love this game, in a way. It is awesome, however… It is SUPER confusing. There is way to much for us to take in all at once, by the time we have no hints or help we feel unsure what we are doing. Please, do whatever you can to make it feel less all over the place. Hints, or a bit more time with the tutorials would be very helpful for us. Thank you.

There is a lot of work that still needs to be done to clear up bugs. However, it is still a fun game.
Great game implementation. Too bad is unplayable, crashing at the end of games. We will give it 5 stars, because it deserves it, once this is solved.
Game is fun to play, medium AI is significantly better than easy. Unfortunately this game crashes multiple times in a single play through making it basically unplayable. Please fix this!
The game itself is great. We played Evolution first and figured Id enjoy this jut as much and we do. But the game is constantly crashing while we play. Hopefully this gets fixed soon.
The tutorial is bad, shark cleaners is missing text, the app harasses you to write a review, but the game is fun.
Just purchased the medium AI for $0.99 and it quits out half way through the game:( please help with this! Other then that, its a great and easy way to introduce someone to the game and a good way to practice. Hoping they also consider making it dual player virtually.
We like the game, we find it a well woven web both enjoyably complex while being smooth and easy play. The mechanics used in the app work well, though there definitely could be an improvement in the explanation of the rules. The developers have made a few choices when writing the app for the various vagaries of play which are not explained or noted in the fairly short rules. At that point we would have rated it a 5 Star happily. But as we were enjoying it we purchased the expansion, for the very reasonable price of a dollar. This gives you a few more cards for greater replay ability, but mostly a level higher AI to play. As the base AIs are easy enough that youd have to try to loose after you understand the basic gameplay. The Medium AI however is really unstable. As in at least half the time we try to play the game crashes, generally repeatedly. So its the main draw to buy the upgrade, but doesnt work half the time! And we have a fairly new iPhone, so it shouldnt be a hardware issue. Thats why we had to downgrade our rating. We hope the app team can get the app working better, and that the company as a whole can continue creating good games like this. So in essence, get this app and try the game. But if you like it go get the physical game instead of trying to play it more on the app by upgrading.
