We are subscribed to Newsdsay and we are Not getting those puzzles delivered in our app.
The app is great if you love solving crosswords. Plenty of available crosswords and its easy to use. The only issue is performance – our phone tends to heat up after 10 minutes of using the app causing us to have to switch off the app to prevent overheating. This also causes significant drain to the battery. If and when this is fixed, we would give it ten stars if possible.
This is a really nice crossword app and have been using it for years. Recently though, it has been consuming tons of battery and the phone runs really hot. For fear of damaging our phone, we dont dare play more than 10 minutes :( Hopefully the performance issue can get resolved or we may need to find another app.
Battery drain is insane, our phone heats up and drops 20-40% battery in an instant while playing. When switching apps, puzzles get randomly reset to earlier stages, also happens when app becomes unresponsive. Please fix the battery issue most importantly of this app will be unusable.
Its rare these days to find an app thats genuinely free – no in-app purchases, no advertising, no upfront cost. And its even more rare for that app to actually be good. This is a fantastic app for the crossword lover. It provides access to multiple major newspapers crosswords, daily, totally gratis. It has all of the features you would expect a crossword app to have. We cant recommend it enough.

Even if you change theme from dark to light, it doesnt stay on light and turns it back to default to the phone theme..
It regularly resets the crossword back to an earlier state, so you lose all your progress. It works well as long as that doesnt happen.
App goes berserk and doesn’t respond correctly to direction buttons. Can no longer tap on a single letter to correct it. Not all items respond in tools/set-up section. Also puzzle is no longer centered correctly on the screen – its covered at bottom by the keyboard on our iPad. Cant finish puzzles cuz keyboard wont stay out of the way. Puzzle doesnt respond to zoom-ins to certain sections either. Was previously enjoying it till this happened. Help!
We play this on our iPad and occasionally we need to switch apps, but if you do this, when you get back, many of the answers you typed in will be gone.
This app is free (so how much can you really complain?) and aggregates puzzles from so many different different sources, which is great. However, this app absolutely kills our battery and makes our phone so hot. One puzzle can drain 6-7% of the battery, which is crazy since the interface is so simple. We’ve wondered (mostly jokingly) if this app is mining crypto on the backend. There are also some bugs with progress being lost and clues not showing up. Overall we still enjoy the app, but only when Im near a power source!
We would love to add our own puzzles into the app, please allow option to import . Puz files.
The fact that this app is free is crazy.
As another reviewer mentioned, this app has a battery drain problem. On our iPad, OmniCrosswords also causes our iPad to heat up. This is our only complaint about this app. In all other respects, its been a great game.
This app seriously needs more fixes. Its very inconsistent in syncing between devices, for one. It totally misses completed games between our ipad and iphone apps. And sometimes, on our iphone but not ipad, we type one letter of a puzzle and it kicks us out! We go back in and type the next letter and it kicks us out! Forget it!!!
We have to echo the other reviewers that have mentioned this app using way too much battery. Even taking five minutes to solve a quick puzzle uses 6 or 7 percent of battery life which is way too much. Hopefully further updates will address this issue, because outside of the battery problem this is a wonderful crossword app.
This is our absolute favorite crossword app. We play it nearly everyday. It consolidates crosswords from multiple sources into 1 single simple app. However, the power usage for this app NEEDS to be fixed. We have an iPhone 13 Pro with a healthy battery but whenever using this app, it drains our battery. Just today, we were playing for only an hour and our battery level dropped 40%. We checked our battery usage and there were no other apps or background activity going. This app was the culprit. This has happened countless times. You should look into optimizing your code before adding any new features or data sources. Using the app without being plugged into a charger is nearly impossible! If the battery drain issue wasnt such a big deal, this app would be an easy 5 star as it is the best crossword app out there.
If you love working crosswords you will have to have this app. It has quickly become one of the most essential apps. The only thing we wish that would be added is a setting to jump back to the first blank in an answer when you are filling it in, a tiny complaint and not enough to affect our rating. Thank you!
Love the app. Hate the refresh/reload aspect. You finish a puzzle and voila it takes you back to the beginning or middle of the puzzle you just completed. Super frustrating when it happen during a puzzle. Whats up with the app?
Love that we can finally get some of these favorite crosswords without paying for the paper! Love that you can choose to use the timer or not. Would love to see two things: 1. Make the clues bigger! Some of us dont have 20/20 vision, and the minuscule clues are SO very hard to read, even on our large iPad. 2. Allow us to tab to the next word. Having to click the > on the screen to get to the next word is frustrating.
This app is great! Good way to pass the time and aggregate all these crosswords. We noticed today though that the only puzzles showing up are USA Today and Wall Street Journal, not sure what happened to the others.
We’ve had this app for a few months now and done crosswords on it every day! One day it just stopped providing crosswords from 6 newspapers and started providing 1 or 2. Im so sad that it still isn’t working correctly! We’ve checked all our settings, refreshed the page, deleted and reinstalled the app several times and we still can’t seem to fix the issue. Hopefully it is resolved soon!
Like others we really like the app but its currently unusable. We truly appreciate that the dev acknowledged this in the comments for the latest update and patiently await their solution coming soon.
Its nice to have something like alpha cross for iOS. We appreciate that more work is being done to it. Just a couple of notes: – The next/precious buttons are a little tricky to tap on iPhone – An option to show the solution would be nice for when we cant quite complete the puzzle but want to see the answers – Adding the Universal daily puzzle would be nice Keep up the good work!
Best crossword app out there! But recent update causing to crash upon open.
Have played this group of puzzles for a while now. Recently when we touch the letter we want, OmniCrosswords closes. When we re-open and hit the same key, the puzzle closes again. Any suggestions?
Good app but needs the option to toggle dark mode on and off. We like our menus in dark mode but with an astigmatism we prefer to do puzzle in light mode.
We love being able to do all of the crosswords from major publishers at no expense and in one place, and with no ads!!! Highly recommend! Our only complaint is that we cant donate to the developer – we would love to support continued improvements!
We saw that the tab feature was added recently, but we use an external keyboard with our iPad, and it still doesnt work for us. Probably the only thing holding us back from using the app regularly. Otherwise, its a bare bones crossword app; a few tweaks and it would be a five-star must have app for solvers.
We love this app, but sadly is glitches constantly. We have had to delete the app and redownload it many times.
Love this app & have been using it daily for months! However, lately its been constantly crashing- its impossible to finish a puzzle. Please fix this so we can go back to doing our daily puzzles.
There are no clues on the USA Today crossword. Whats up with that??
We were so excited about downloading this app because we love crossword puzzles! But the clues arent showing up. At all. We’ve uninstalled and reinstalled and still no clues. Its unusable for us. So disappointed!! Thank you so much for fixing this for us! So excited to do the crosswords!!
Its free, so we cant really complain. We love that we can do crosswords from different papers and its in one app. No ads which is pretty awesome, we would gladly pay for it. However, there are a few things worth noting. We wish there was an area inside the app to submit bug reports. We’ve run into a few issues the past 3 months or so and want an easy way to submit them. We dont think sharing on the App Store page is great but we didnt see another way. It kills our phone battery. We are on an iPhone 12 with latest iOS. Working on 2 crosswords kills our battery from 90% to ~50%. Maybe this is an iPhone issue but we also notice our screen gets dark when on this app and we cant adjust it to be brighter (brightness is already at 100). There seems to be a lot more bugs since last month (early June), e.g. App doesnt refresh to show new puzzles no matter what we do, some puzzles appear broken and cant enter text into squares, etc. Just today, 3 crosswords appear twice and we cant enter text into any of them without it kicking us back to the puzzle list screen. All that said, its free, no ads, simple UX, so this is our favorite crossword app by far.
This might be our most-used app. No ads, simple and clean UI. Used to be kinda buggy but has been smooth for a while now.
Really a great app, and the price cant be beat. The one feature suggestion we have is to sync progress to our Game Center or other similar account. Id love the ability to start a puzzle on our iPhone, then pick it up later in the day on our iPad when Im back home. Other than that, this is great thanks so much for the app!
We love the idea of this app which has some providers we cant find elsewhere. However, typing in answers is very sluggish on our iPad Air 2. As a result, we have to very deliberately type each letter. If we type too fast, it will skip letters and we have to back up and correct. This seems specific to this app as we dont have this issue elsewhere.
Good crossword app, but dec 6 suddenly when you open the show errors option, it wont close. Cant do a puzzle anymore.
Every once in awhile the app will download two copies of the same crossword. Then when you click on the crossword to open it, it shuffles through the duplicate crosswords and goes back to the menu, making it unplayable. As far as we can tell, no work around for this so we just have to wait until the next day to try again. When it does work, we really enjoy the app though.
If you enjoy crossword puzzles, then you will really enjoy this app. It is easy to use, provides personal settings and the continuously updated variety is a plus! Highly recommended.
One of the best designed ios crossword apps to date, however, the current settings selection is limited. With some tweaks and minor additions, the app could easily rival the NY Times crosswords. Most of the changes would be simple, for example: having the puzzle scale with your phones screen size, so that you dont have to zoom in our out adjustable hint size enabling error tracking should make it impossible to delete the correct letters Thank you for creating this amazing app, and saving us the $40/year NYT keeps hassling us for.
Easily worth a couple bucks. Feature request: a little haptic feedback when we press the next/previous word buttons, or when we change directions. We think that would help us not make so many mistypes. (That way we quickly know whether Im typing letters or navigating) Also, this isnt a big deal, but theres an error tracking mode bug where a blank square gets highlighted red if you previously used the space bar to skip it.
First off, awesome job creating this app. We’ve been looking for an alternative to Androids Shortyz since we switched to iOS. Features from other apps Id like to see: – Toggle showing/hiding the time – Reveal letter, word, etc – Progress indicators for each puzzle in the main screen (or at least whether or not the puzzle has been started) – The clue view like in the NYT app – Toggle whether Space skips cell or flips directions – Highlighting linked clues Also, we know youre doing this for free right now, but if you ever decide to insert ads Id be happy to pay for a premium ad-free version of the app if these features are added. Keep up the great work.
This app is a awesome concept! The fact that it’s free forces us to give it 5 stars just due to the fact that we can’t really complain about an app that is free and 90% great. The complaint we do have (I lied about not really complaining) is the UI/keyboard can use some tweaking. The crosswords don’t fit on the screen properly so there is always some that is off screen. Also, having option to skip filled words, and have the tab key (I use a BT keyboard) skip to the next word, vs. Next letter would be outstanding. Basically, if you ripped off the NYTXW layout, this app would be perfect. We would definitely be willing to pay for a polished up version of this.
If youre into crosswords, you should already have this app on your phone. Id say its second only to the NYT crossword app; you get access to 6 different high-quality crosswords a day from several notable newspapers. We would absolutely be willing to pay a few bucks for this app, and we would encourage the developer(s) to create some sort of monetization strategy or donation system so users can support them. The single problem this app has is that its in-game UI is somewhat clunky. When entering clues, part of the puzzle is always obscured, meaning you need to scroll back and forth as you go. Also, we think the NYT interface (in which the cursor automatically skips filled squares) should be an inspiration for future development here. However, we highly appreciate the use of native apple interface features, such as the keyboard. So many apps overlook how this affects user experience, but the dev(s) here totally get it! If the dev(s) could rearrange the interface to eliminate these very minor issues, our review is easily 5 stars. QUICK EDIT: It would also be nice to have optional notifications for individual subscriptions. For example, we like doing the USA Today puzzle and wouldnt mind a reminder when the next days crossword is published.
Would be nice to be able to add puzzles of our own or add subscriptions not appearing in the list already. Would also love to be able to intelligently jump to the next open box, rather than to the next clue. Also nice would be a timer (with finished puzzles showing your time instead of a green check. Finally, a statistics page (akin to the nytimes crosswords stats) would be great. One last little detail: the final row of the puzzle is slightly covered by the keyboard, which is a bit unsightly. Edit 10/5: Im having a recurring bug where puzzles appear twice in the list.
