A Glimpse into Oubliette

Oubliette is the classic multiplayer dungeon fantasy role playing game, finally available on the iPhone/iPod Touch. Build a party of fighters, priests, mages and thieves to run deep into the dungeon. Test your courage and skill against groups of orcs, trolls, vampires and dragons.

Earning its reputation as the thinking man’s dungeon game, Oubliette blends the thrill of mortal combat with the sublime challenges of strategy, planning and adaptation. Rather than testing your reaction speed and nerves, like a first person shooter, Oubliette challenges the player to do careful strategic planning as well as make tactical decisions in the heat of battle.

Each player (character) in the game is created from one of eight player races, which vary in attributes such as strength, intelligence, dexterity and durability. Elves are highly intelligent and (potentially) immortal, Orcs are strong with short life spans, Dwarves are strong with high wisdom, Kobolds are quite weak in most areas but advance more quickly.

Depending on these attributes, each player will be qualified to join a limited number of player classes (occupations). More balanced players will have more choices, including Hirebrand (fighter), Mage, Priest and Thief. Less commonly, players may be qualified for a highly selective class with special skills such as Ranger, Sage, Paladin, Samurai or Ninja.

Unlike games which focus on a single player against multiple opponents, Oubliette allows a party of up to 10 players with complementary skills to face the various types of monsters found in the dungeon. There are more than 160 different monsters, and to deal with them, more than 150 different pieces of equipment, which may be enchanted with special properties or skills.

Oubliette is challenging, but forgiving. New players commonly have their parties wiped out by an unfamiliar group of monsters. In fact, your party can meet up to 3 monster groups at the same time! Use the Temporal Chamber to save a Temporal Portal before dangerous trips. If things turn out badly, use the Temporal Chamber to turn back the clock and try again. The trapeze is every bit as thrilling, but safer, with a net below.

If you are up to the challenge, Oubliette is free to download and play. Explore the easier levels of the dungeon to build your party and expertise. And then, when you are ready, feel the power of the game on the deeper levels. Onward to Glory!

We were so glad when we found this game we love RPGs this game is awesome The The in app purchases are worth it this game is like solara but better. For those you wondering you can sell items for cash in the store also when a character opens a chest the item just goes into your inventory so for instance if you have a ninja or thief open the chest and you get plate mail it goes into your inventory then if you have a hirebrand or paladin tap manage ep equipment tap the plate mail then tap equip.

This is a largely faithful remake of the 1977 PLATO computer game Oubliette which is largely responsible for inspiring the Wizardry Series and, by extension the entire CRPG genre.

Lots of diversity, plenty of fun. The temporal gems are a great way to save your players status. Definitely need to save using the temporal gems because the lower levels are tough and even the strongest, wisest characters can be killed rapidly.

This game seems a little accessible to blind people because it is working for us do you only problem is it won’t let us just keep fighting every time we choose one character we’ll go and do a double blow it’ll make us go to the character again that is that take us a little that take us a little bit of time to get back to the character list and find which character we want so whyAnd we have also been doing the repeat but it should let us fight untill we want another character App for star because we like it it is very very fun and addictive.

Potential exists – game crashes way too often – we get the vague mapping concept but does it add or detract to playability? We say it detracts. No discernible way for party members to swap gear in dungeon? Truly silly, whoever opens chest gets the gear inside and can not give to a fellow player who could use it for benefit of party? ( can exchange gear once dungeon exited is a small cancellation)- would have given 1 star but it has potential.

This is an awful mobile game it is just a mess. We just don’t feel like the UI is easy to use. Maybe this just isn’t the game for us.

Really enjoy the game. Can get a bit frustrating at times going all the way down levels and having to climb all the way up, but overall we really enjoy it. In fact, we stayed up the entire first night we had the game playing it on our iphone!

This is an amazing port of a game we spent hundreds of hours playing in the mid-80’s. Very faithful to the original; forerunner to the modern RPG.

We’re an old-schooler, and we literally dreamed of playing this game in the palm of our hand 30 years ago. Bravo!

We are an avid fan of old-school games such as this, so we certainly enjoy Oubliette. We never played the original, but it certainly reminds us of Wizardry and the Bard’s Tale games. The difficulty of this port has been toned down, but there is plenty of challenge to be had.. We personally have spent hundreds of hours fighting our way through and we’re still having fun playing.. Which is the whole point, no? ^^

It’s that nice old school come back to life. If you like RPGs you will like this. If you ever played DnD you will like this. Let’s just face the facts you will like this! Still love this game!

This is an incredible! Port of the old game Oubliette for the pc from years ago. Playing this on our Iphone when we have some down time is just fantastic. The graphics and music set the atmosphere well The inclusion of the guilds/peasants, etc. Is just delightful. Few other RPGS are so demanding. It’s along the lines of bards tale, wizardry, and the like but even more difficult. The character generation and dungeon difficulty is perfect. The rationed save method works well to keep players thoughtfully saving and crawling carefully. Inventory control is reasonable; we wish we could sell objects back to the store for cash but we believe that’s coming soon. The developer has been responsive about features discussion and bugs, which is also nice.

Such a similar feel to a classic like eye of the beholder. Where it needs work? We’ve been in several battles, but still haven’t received any loot. Also, a prime example, monster name Gnomes type: Giant. Seriously? This game needs some TLC.

This is a great OLD school game. We’ve been playing it for 30 years. Of course it’s a different interface on the IPAD which takes time to learn, but it’s great fun.

We played the game and loved it but we suggest in one of the next updates you work toward giving fighters skills to use and give them an element to support such as a flame warrior who can use a fire slash type of thing, allow priests to use their heal abilities in battle as well, and to allow users to sell items (big deal in our opinion) because items building up in inventories gets VERY annoying, but other than that it is a great game that we would recommend to any fantasy d&d fan, keep up the good work! :D.

This game is pretty decent for what it is, a time waster. We just wish you could name characters as you make them. To the person who thinks this is sexist, we are not having the stat problem you are. We tend to have the opposite.

We have been looking for an old school RPG just like oubliette for some time now. Couldn’t be happier that it is a free experience to boot.

Pretty good. If you are bored we guess. But needs more… Talking would be nice. :) really want to know how to do like real hearts and smiles and stuff. Like on email and Skype.

Why are all the stats we get for females lower than those for the males? If the picture was random than we would have gotten a high stat female by now. We could sue for this kind of sexist crap.

This game is great for those of you looking to experience the golden age of Dungeons and Dragons. Absolutely accurate porting of a 1977 vintage game. It’s really like stepping back in time. We love being able to create the perfect party if up to 10 characters from 8 races and 10 classes each with different benefits and limitations. This is really The grandaddy of Diablo and World of Warcraft. It might not be for everyone but it’s a free download so try it out and step back in time!

This game is almost like table top d&d! So far we’ve only played down to dungeon lv 2… We guess our only complaint is that some of the monsters look the same… How hard could it be to draw a different sort of beastie… Anyway we bought all dungeon levels(fair price too$2.99) so we’ll give you more input after we’ve played a little more .. Over all good!

We played D & D back in college 20 years ago and this is very similar, updated to the iPod! Great fun! Stick with it, learn the strategies, create some really good characters for your dungeon exploration parties, and go for it! They have a good website for reference too. Nice job!

This game is the best dungeon game we’ve ever played. Well it’s about the only one we’ve ever played but it is a lot of fun. To have the fun you have to stick with it so you can learn it. Oh, yea cheak out our ranger, Halt, in the hall of fame. And Link we agree that it wasn’t the dev’s fault.

Great blend of classical dungeon game with cool mood setting graphics and sound. It has the feel of an old school dungeon game with a mix of real time action when you’re fighting the monsters – we actually fought three groups at the same time, and survived! If you like living on the edge, go to temporal chamber to save your guys first, cause if you get wiped out, you can restore em good as new. At first we liked running elves and dwarves for their great stats, but then we discovered the lowly kobolds make level like mad. Forget elves – they live forever, because they take forever to make levels once you get em up to level 6 or so. The spell names are strange and they take a while to get used to, but we love the voice of the mage when casting. Thanks for a neat game, guys!

This game is pretty fun. Its definitely diffrent then other games that we have seen on the iPhone. If you were ever a fan of fantasy table top games then you should check this game out.

Really awesome app! We’re a girl who wouldn’t normally be into these type of games, but we really like this one. It’s not just like everything else out there! It did seem somewhat confusing at first but it just took a little time to get the hang of it. Definitely worth any confusion. Great job!

Yes, this game has that old school AD&D 2nd Edition feel to it…… But…. PROS: *Old School Feel *Player Character Party Play *Plenty of Class/Race Choices *Challenging Age System *Variety of Loot *Large Variety of Spells *Certain Classes are rare….. *Very reasonable prices for deeper levels. CONS: *Only first 2 members of party can melee *Aging system is too fast at the Inn *Caster Attack Spells are mostly useless since they damage party as well….. *Can only purchase deeper levels IN GAME…. *No real ROLE PLAY and more of a dungeon crawl…. Still fun none the less!

Its kind of a bummer that we only get 10 gems. But im a big fan of RPG’s and the like and this game is fun. It takes some getting used to but its enjoyable. We love the old school feel. The only downers are that it takes a while to get created charcaters up and running & the gem shortage.

This is a very good game, but we spent money on the dlc to access all 10 floors only to be denied access after the first three. 2.99 down the drain, the price of doing business online. We doubt this was a fault of the dev (and we’re glad shareware is coming back in demos, lites, and apps like this one, but apple really needs to upgrade their transaction system.

This game would have been awesome in the 80’s, but it’s a poor choice these days. Super-lame graphics, poor interface, and they want you to pay for dungeon levels? What a croc. Looks like a ported commodore 64 game. Someone’s been astroturfing…
